That's basically every corporation that starts from humble beginnings. Power corrupts absolute. RoosterTeeth, Crunchyroll, Funimation, Blizzard, Disney, Starbucks, Hasbro, Mattel, Apple, Dell, Amazon, McDonalds, Nike, Kinkos (Kinkos and Apple actually have oddly similar origin stories), etc etc etc. Even plenty of corporations that didn't start from humble beginnings used to be better than they are now like Sega, Microsoft and Konami.

@@psychokinrazalon All human beings are greedy, even under economic/social systems supposedly dedicated to selflessness, like Soviet Communism or various attempted communes here in the US (starting with the English Puritan Plymouth colony) that all eventually imploded on themselves (or in the Puritan's case, switched to a Private Property Free-Market model that formed the basis of the US economy).
"“Well first of all, tell me: Is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? You think Russia doesn’t run on greed? You think China doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? Of course, none of us are greedy, it’s only the other fellow who’s greedy." ~Milton Friedman
The issue in particular with these companies is the creative entrepreneurs that found them and responsible for the imaginative and creative products that make them successful get eventually replaced by bean counters, people who are very good at hard numbers and working with complex and detailed systems that follow consistent unbreakable unchanging rules, but aren't creatives in their own right. So they simply give the go-ahead to already proven concepts and products (how you get cookie-cutter copies following in the footsteps of new products). It takes a combination of vision, creative skills, and risk-taking to create a new company with a new product in an industry.

I miss working at Majesco. It was my first game dev job working on the internal Pipedream Interactive team. I never followed what the company was making outside what I was on. Much of 2001 most (or maybe all) of the Pipedream team was on two PS2 ports (Soldier of Fortune and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force). Come the end of 2001, some of us were given XBox dev kits to play with. My friend moved over to working under Dan Kitchen, who I got to me but never working with (and now I wish I had). Unfortunately due to the company’s preparations to go public, some of us were laid off before our next project early 2002. My friends who remained on Pipedream told me not much happen for the next year so they eventually left. Majesco lives on but I think that was when Pipedream ended. It was nice to hear some of the goings-on that happened at the company afterward in this video.

It's good to have stories like this come out, so we can remember that not every cancelled game that never saw the light of day was a hidden gem. I think people are really prone to assuming that something they didn't get was exactly what they would've wanted, and sometimes... yeah, sometimes it's A Boy and his Blob on the DS.

(15:47) Ketchup isn't new. It's in the original NES game as well, and functions the same way, teleporting Blob to the spot where you throw it.
(16:00) The NES game actually does have some enemies. There are the bouncing snakes in the underground that you can't defeat, and have no choice but to evade. And, on Blobolonia, you have things like marshmallows, popcorn, cherry bombs, and Hershey's Kisses, which you can shoot with the Vitablaster.

A Boy and his Blob was a flawed game that hasn't held up very well, but it was still remembered fondly by a number of people and it had a great idea that had so much potential. While there was a good reason as to why the DS game got cancelled, it's still good to see some uncovered lost concept footage, and I hope people will continue to find more in the future. Also, the WayForward reboot is great, and I'm glad it's being preserved since the original Wii release has essentially become a rare collectible nowadays.

The best thing to come out of these prototypes is that, thanks to this video, I found out the Wii reboot was re-released on modern systems. I *HAVE* to revisit it, it's such a precious game.

I thought long ago, Hardcore Gaming 101 mentioned something about a reboot about this game, back when it used a black background. Even had one screenshot, where the blob was green.
Also, Ketchup jellybeans were in the original game, and served a similar purpose. They just couldn't be used when the Blob was on the same screen.

    • @SomeGuy712x

Actually, Ketchup works just fine even if Blob is already on the same screen. Blob will still warp to wherever the Ketchup jellybean lands.

Thanks for the fascinating video. Looking at the game it is obvious why it was never released, but it is always cool to get a look at these things. I wish companies would release stuff like this on their own without relying on Mr. X to leak them!

Sadly there's often too much red tape going on with a lot of these prototypes for corpos to simply release them. Contracts, licences, NDA's, wanting to "reuse" them at a later date, and even some skeletons in the closet, like segas "Golden Axed" release on steam.

I remember when the wii was first announced and they showed “concept” games they showed off one called what I believe was called “sadness” the trailer looked like it used realistic graphics and a woman holding wii and nunchuck. The whole trailer was in black and white… and I’m assuming the game was survival horror? Anyone know anything about it?

    • @Espadasilenciosa
      @Espadasilenciosa Рік тому +7

I think years ago I read in an interview the development of Sadness was a total disaster. In the first months the devs barely did any advance (a few 3D models) due to the lack of organization, I think. The game was silently cancelled after that.

The green version of Blobert in the first build of the DS game reminded me of The Blob from ClayFighter, especially in his boxing glove form. If the game had ever been released, and he'd stayed green, I wonder if that would've ended in legal problems for them. They might've dodged a(nother) bullet by canceling the game.

I hate to tell ya' this, but ketchup wasn't a new flavor. That was in the original NES game and it had the same function. Also you say there were no enemies in the NES game, that is also incorrect. There were these giant bouncing caterpillar/worm monsters in the caverns that you had to dodge or else they would kill you, and when you went to Blobert's planet there were various candy related enemies that could kill you if touched and you had to shoot them with your vitamin gun (or use the coconut glitch).

Funnily enough, I was reading about this in Unseen64's book Video Games You Will Never Play... now we can play it.
Back then I was helping playtest a DS game, a conversion of the classic arcade game Dragon's Lair. Not the version that was actually released, a version using compression techniques to give ALL the laserdisc original footage and gameplay. I even wrote an article on it for gamesTM magazine, but that version of the game was never published.
