Have you ever seen or had this water pouring into a boat? This 82 year old man was pretty calm he was traveling with his wife! A friend of ours needed work so we referred this job to him since we were pretty booked when it happened!
Yeah, a friend was out at the club island when his high water alarm went off. He called me in a panic because his bilge pump wasn’t keeping up. I was about 20 minutes away and told him to stay put. I got there and the water was almost up to the spark plugs. I closed the raw water intakes and pulled the hoses off, started the engine and ran them at high idle. The water came down to the point where I could see that the port dripless was a freaking flood. I keep a flood response kit in my boat that has a large strip of inner tube that I used to wrap around the shaft lock. I used a pipe wrench on the shaft to mobilize the shaft from windmilling till he got it hauled out. Put the hoses back on and opened the valves but pulled the shift cable pin on the port in case he forgot not to use it. He gave me the best steak dinner ever!
@@SkypowerwithKarlsounds like you saved the day! Matt recently saved a customer & his boat while the boat was taking on water. First Matt made him call to get rescued then had the guy call him back once TowBoat was notified. He then talked the guy thru all the steps to slow the water down. Speaking very calmly.
I’m currently enrolled in a Marine Systems course to get my ABYC marine electrical, marine systems, marine diesel, and NMEA certifications. I hope to be able to work for someone like you when I get into the work force come September. Having a teacher like you is invaluable!
A good teacher definitely helps and it’s also the experience! All those certificates are good but it’s not real world experience and that is what you need!
like that your teaching younger generation how to work on these things. hopefully you will get some down time one of these days. I don't get to shut my cell phone off on the weekends unless i am offshore fishing. I miss the days before cell phones lol
well, what is typically done in air to air systems is we use the units compressor to evacuate the gauge manifold. This is done by closing the high side valve on the hose and removing it and then opening the valves on the gauge manifold while the compressor is running so it pulled the gauges down to evaporator pressure and that is negligible enough to discharge into atmosphere. Im not familiar with marine ac units but they look like water cooled condenser units we see in high rise apartments or water source heat pumps. All refrigerants are bad for the atmosphere, 400 series blends are all greenhouse gases even if they are not ozone depleting.
They use salt water to cool the condenser coil. It’s really problematic as u can imagine. Lots of marine growth that need cleaned out regularly and well saltwater and metal. What more do I need to say. Thanks for watching.
A/C issues always seem to be a problem explaining how you trouble shoot is excellent, would love to keep seeing more of what youd find and explain codes
At some point would you please show what to do in different case scenarios when you have a shift seal issue or other running gear that could sink your boat? How do you stop and why do you stop shaft from spinning when towing, should you do both if you have two shafts, and how do stop them without ruining things? Love all the videos, great stuff always, especially technical stuff!
We had a diver use rope to tie the prop off. We don’t want the prop and shafts windmilling, because it can cause further damage to the seal, and make the leak worse.
I'd guesstimate 5gpm, I always had a bicycle inner tube in my emergency kit just for situations like that, along with a collision patch/tarp-splashzone- wood plugs and bottle of Pussers
As a business owner I can never shut my phone off, i get more anxiety wondering if someone has an emergency and is unable to get in touch, one of the downsides of self employment, the good news is after 30 years I have gotten rid of all the "runny nose" customers so my phone barely rings like it use to😊
In our biz if you have an emergency call tow boat or the fire department if we didn’t work on your boat! If it’s our customer then Matt & I go right away … which has happened a few times! Full disclosure Not due to any of our work - a customers boat caught fire & last year the 72 that started sinking! Matt was on vacation for the sinking so I met the client on my own and called in 2 guys to help me. In an emergency we just respond with integrity until all the dust settles to see what really caused the mishap! That’s the best we can do!
I could eat Poblano peppers with anything! Try Roasted Poblanos with ground turkey and good a little mozzarella inside, and then when done put heated up Hot RO-TEL sauce on top!!! Good stuff!
As the Master Marie Mechanic for 45 years, you know you’re never really able to shut your phone off. You’re gonna get the call and it might be a toilet won’t work which can wait until after the weekend and it might be worth sinking or I smell smoke. So if you’re thinking one day, you can shut your phone off. Let me know how that works for you. Ha
I paused your video above to say that I can honestly say that I have not had a call on my mobile phone for several months [I think the last time I had a call on it was from the company I got my sim card from offering me a new deal in July 2023 ... but I turned it down] ... and ... I haven't taken a call on my landline since February 2023.
Based on fluid dynamics taking into account the displacement of the boat figuring half full fuel tamks and using an average barometric pressure of 30.1 as well as considering the water temperature and salinity my completely amature guess is 6.3 GPM.
Sometimes in the boat repair business you just have to call time out. You have to preserve your health first....mental and physical. I could work 24/7 if I hadn't figured out how to say no a long time ago. Customers that can't understand that can just go worry somebody else. They are the same ones that want to whine about your bill usually anyway. There is not enough qualified people in this business and it's just the way it is. So many of those "emergencies" were issues you identified at a previous service interval but the customer chose to ignore it and fate finally caught up with them. I couldn't let the man's boat sink either. You just get a feel for what legitimately deserves your time after while.
Lol yea I have shut my phone off on the weekends and I have gone on vacation and ignored phone calls 😂 and I would say about 3/4 gallon a min for that leak. Ohhhhh pico de gallo fresh that's good stuff right there and I wonder how often those A/C units get serviced and I know for automotive 134A you have to be ASE certified to buy a keg of it idk if it's the same for boats never delt with it. And get the poor kid a hard hat 😂😂😂😂
On the weekend I’ll sometimes text let’s talk on Monday! When you come this summer checkout the market thats where you get the pico/guacamole and fresh chips.
have you ever had a customer blame you for a leak on there boat after you serviced it? like in automotive people say "the car wasn't making that noise until you worked on it" lol some people want something for nothing
Unfortunately we get blamed too …. Recently worked on small outboard motor cleaned it up got it running we try to always take video. We Return engine to the customer they run it … leave us a msg that our job was incomplete cause it’s not working! We send them our video we bring it back to the shop clean it again … they had bad gas and tried to blame us! 😂
Why didn’t he leave the leaking motor in neutral, rev’ed up making amps and limp in on one engine ? What if he was out of tow boat/help range? Some people should buy golf clubs !
We only call our guys on the wkend to see if they wanna work! But, it’s not that often. We try not to work the weekend cause it involves us too if our guys need help or questions.

I'd say maybe 1-2 gallons per minute at most on that leak. Probably less. Hard to get a scaled perspective. Keep up the interesting post.
1 or 2 gallons is more than what I’d want in a boat 🤣
Curious when you’re feeling refrigerant why do you not use a dye?
The units come with dye from the factory.

2700.00 r22. Man I bought a pallet at 300$ years ago and thought that was high.... Highest I have seen is like 8-900

Agree completely but Matt just has one phone cause he doesn’t want to carry 2 🥴
This is why these dripless shaft seals are junk and the old school stuffing box is the way to go.
Just depends if scheduled maintenance is performed!

We put ours on vibrate! Just because people will call at all hours.
Looks to me like 2-3 gallons/minute is coming into the bilge. Easily handled by the bilge pump.
