Oldsmobile was essentially the second-tier brand of General Motors cars in the United States, and made cars such as the Toronado; one of America's first front-wheel drive road cars.
Oldsmobile got its name from the founder, Ransom E. Olds, yes his name was Ransom. By 1999, they were already one foot in the grave and would begin the process of shutting down December of the following year. Once the last car rolled off the production line in 2004, Oldsmobile shut its doors for good.

Remember, Cadillac didn't have much racing pedigree when they ran the Northstar LMP, they ran Le Mans in the 50s and a couple NASCAR Cup Series races, but that latter point was because no one was really interested in busting up their expensive Caddy on some dirt oval in the middle of wherever for lols and $300 checks

It's kinda hilarious how easy it was to make fun of Cadillac in the early 2000's. At least nowadays they make some pretty cool cars like the CT5-V Blackwing, and they were pretty much the standard of the DPi cars.
The idea of the differing volume levels is that it has like a sort of 'bass drop' effect, which is why I usually put a hard line before the music bits, but some people were getting annoyed over having volume warnings before, I'll try to work out a way, because when editing I listen at 100% volume to make sure there isn't any unpleasant noises that you can't hear at my usual volume, and those parts can give more of a jump scare effect than a 'bass drop' effect, so I'll try to work out how I can get the effect I want without the jump scare side effect it produces. I'm new to this and I'm teaching myself to edit, so the quality of the sound and everything else should be better with each video
@@FailedRacersdynamic range (volume differences) is a useful tool, but the most common mistake people make is having too big a difference. Striking a good balance between having dynamic range and not having the listener have to manage their volume several times throughout the video is hard without experience. It's already better balanced than your Octavia WRC video. I also wouldn't recommend blowing your ears out listening at full volume, as it might give you false info (the amplifier might clip instead of the audio file itself) as well as hearing problems down the road.
To be serious I think that this story should be looked in the bigger picture of how some American motorsport ventures have at times failed to grasp the way things are done in Europe and Australia. A classic case of this is the Group A Mustang Touring Car in the 1980s. Teams in Europe and Australia struggled to make the Mustang fast because Ford in America did not really understand the FIA homologation process and how touring cars constantly needed upgrades to be competitive.
I still think those Cadillacs looked cool. However therein lies the problem. As you pointed out the car design was several years out of date and powered by a relatively unsophisticated V8 Supercar motor, and the whole enterprise lacked the resources and development of Audi and Bentley's efforts. Of course Cadillac are back with a vengeance in Hypercars and rumours still persist of a Formula One entry. That was then, this is now.
The race variants of the Northstar engine were good, as long as they weren't badged as Cadillacs. Under the Oldsmobile badge they were dominant in the early Indy Racing League, and under the Opel badge they won races in DTM.
The only reason I really knew this car existed is cause of a scalextric set my dad got me in the early 2000’s plus the 1:18 scale model he used too have
God hearing Cadillac being pronounced that way drives me up a wall its pronounced Ca-Dill-lac, but i can say this about Cadillac racing this was only a stumble compared to their racing exploits afterwards in GT racing in the US with the CTS-V.R Beating the Mighty Audi S4 and RS6 Quattros and all others for almost a decade so yeah they had the last laugh i dare say
One quick correction I should make, the Audi R8 LMP had a double element rear wing, but due to how shallow the AoA is, it's hard to see the slot gap, so visually it looks like a single element wing.
It also didn't help that they were promoting an engine line that was one of GM's worst at that time. The Northstar line of engines were exclusive to cadillac and high end oldsmobile's, and they were famous for literally ripping themselves apart in some extremely spectacular ways. They were introduced in 1994 and gm wasn't able to finally swat all the flies buzzing around it until the third gen version of the line came out in 2004, just four years before being discontinued.
That Northstar LMP was enterened in the same race as Audi R8 LMP900, 550 Maranallos, and....a Morgan Aero 8 on the entry list. Man, outside of the dominance of Audi, the early 2000s Le Mans had some wild entries that were on the list. Then again the Northstar engines gave the Menard Buicks a run for their money in terms of which had the more spectacular failures, it's a tough call between the Menard ones just turning into a giant plume of smoke or a Northstar engine grenading itself suddenly, se Smoke's famous one at Indy The car itself looked nice, but it was slow, and didn't work that well. I do wonder though, with the GT3 rules at Le Mans, is the Caddy CTS.V homologated and could that show up and give Corvettes a good fight?
Panoz had some weird cars, but the roadster and the Esparante GT1 are my go to when I boot up Midtown Madness. Talking about Panoz, are we going to see their car featured on this channel?
I understand the argument for the GT40 MkI and MkII being British, but the MkIV was designed and built in America so if there's nothing else, 1967 was an American win.
I will admit I was stretching a bit with the 100% win rate, but you can also argue that the MkIV is still based on a European car. Still, that leaves Europe with a 99% win rate, which is definitely not so bad
You should make a video about the Mercedes CLR some time soon! It was the 'Flying Mercedes' and has become a laughing stock of Le Mans. Also, please mention how often it's confused with the CLK GTR/LM as the flying Merc. Thanks!
@racingklaus False. Their European base is in Germany and is actually Swedish in origin, the overall outfit of Gazoo Racing was formed in Japan (their Global HQ is located in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture), by their late test driver, Hiromu Naruse and began competing in Super Taikyu races before their NLS campaigns in Germany. Furthermore, the 787B that won Le Mans was operated by ORECA, who are French (additionally the cars themselves were built by Mazda in-house, making them Japanese). the Toyotas that won Le Mans were designed primarily by Pascal Vasselon, a Frenchman. The Fords that won Le Mans had US engines tuned by Carroll Shelby, a US driver/engineer, and thanks to mediocre performances, were actually redeveloped in Los Angeles, California and Dearborn, Michigan, it was those re-developed GT40s that won Le Mans, not the British designs.
@racingklaus Wrong again, they weren't even called "Toyota Team Europe"(Their initial name) until the early 1990s. Furthermore, this discounts the presence of SARD, TOM'S and many other teams affiliated with Toyota to an official capacity, that are based in Japan. In addition to this, the chassis, engines etc for the rally cars are of Japanese origin and are Japanese cars (then there's the registration, as they are listed under Japan, not Germany, France or Sweden under the FiA's official classifications and registries). Under that same idiotic logic, Mercedes is a British F1 manufacturer because they base their Euro headquarters in Brackley. Aston Martin is half-Kuwaiti because of their owners and Dodge is French-Italian because they share parts with Alfa-Romeo and other Fiat Group marques. There's a reason why you don't hear the German national anthem when Toyota wins a race in the WEC or the Finnish national anthem in the case of the WRC.
The later versions of the Ford GT40 were American designed & built & run & driven by Americans to win in 1967. Of course, as with ANY car there are components built by manufacturers from around the world. Most racing cars run American ATL fuel cells, doesn't mean they're American.
As a ‘Murican I’ve noticed Cadillac is funny because it seems to have two very different demographics. The only people I see driving Cadillacs are old people and wannabe gangsta rappers.
Look, the GT40 couldn't have won Le Mans with the purley British teams, but conversley the americans teams couldn't have made a GT40 from scratch to win Le Man's. It took both nations to build the car. I mean, the Appendix J car was a stupid idea that killed one of the greatest endurance race driver winners/ engineers. They only made it so they could say it was all American.
4:17 I wouldn’t say this is entirely true, it’s just that the reality is the luxury sedan market has moved towards producing more performance oriented vehicles.
787b is overrated, just sayin, I know it's not relevant but it got mentioned and I hate how that car is so loved, it only sounded good, I love the engine but the win was lucky and the car I swear was in a slower class, won purely on luck
@user-vq7zy7cv6k not when it comes to the location of construction. The manufacturer by which the GT40 was badged is American, but there are numerous scenarios where the cars or even teams that bear a manufacturer's name don't match the manufacturer's main location.
Well the way he talks about caddilac makes it seem European, like don't shame the U.S for not winning le mans, australia hasn't had a car win it either
The gt40 is an american race car as holman Moody is a american race car builder normal you never heard the name oldsmobile they didn't make cars in the 2000 neither they do day
I could comment on this all day. I would like to finally add that at least Cadillac came back for more attempts unlike a certain FWD Japanese monstrosity already covered on this channel. And they were not the first luxury car maker to arrogantly think that an ultimately disasterous design would beat all comers. Look at Porsche and their 1991 V12 F1 engine. The problem was that Cadillac had been away from Le Mans since the 1950s. Look at the non-European Le Mans winners Toyota and Mazda. They spent years - no, decades - perfecting the art before achieving victory. I can understand why Cadillac thought recycling a Riley and Scott chassis would put them on the short cut to glory at Le Mans. However what would have beaten the Porches and McLarens during the 1995-1997 period was old hat by 2000 against the Audis. Pardon typos.
(1) The Ford MkIV (and, that's "MkIV" ... NOT "GT40 MkIV," as it was a J-car chassis, not a GT chassis) was built entirely in the USA. The 1966 winning MkII was a GT chassis, although not a GT40. The 1968 and '69 winner was a GT40, and those cars were built in the UK. The MkIV was not. (2) Cadillac was not developed to compete with Mercedes, BMW, and Audi. Cadillac was established in 1902, after M-B, but long before BMW and Audi began building automobiles, and became a part of General Motors in 1909. In the 1920s and '30s it competed in the high-end luxury market with Packard, Pierce Arrow, and Duesenberg. (3) With your "South Iff-rican" accent, I'd be very careful criticizing the way Americans speak. Yes, some of our regional accents are hard on the ears (I grew up in Pittsburgh, spent other parts of my youth in Oklahoma and the NYC area, and went to college in the South), but are generally easier to take than "South Iff-rican" English. (4) Even the French pronounce the make in question as "CAD-ih-lak," so your insistence on "Caddi-yak" is badly placed.
Missed opportunity to talk about the Oldsmobile Aurora, it's hopes to save Oldsmobile, and how unique it was. Not very journalistic or mature to just claim Oldsmobile Aurora is just an imaginary thing.
But the cars they won Le Mans with were designed and made in Europe (although the GT40's Mk4 version was made in America, it's still based on a European design.)
I think you missed the Toyota TS050 and GR010 as LeMans winners. And you really need to learn to pronounce "Cadillac". There is no Y in Cadillac. I am a French Canadian and as such know how to pronounce Peugeot and Villeneuve, but I also know that Cadillac is an American name and is pronounced (/ˈkædɪlæk/). No wonder voice recognition software can't understand Aussies.
@@FailedRacers I believe that these cars were developped by Toyota engineers in Cologne but the powertrains were fully designed and developped in Japan. "Morizo" does have his history at "the Ring" I guess all great rececars have some European ties. But as a french speaker, we pronounce L's.

bro you slated americans in this video lmao which is warented, oldsmobile were the oldest american brand and rivalled fiat, open, peugeot ect on age, they were huge from the 50s to the 80s mainly in america (like most us car companies) but died once american cars fell behind imports, like other brands such as saturn, hummer, and pontiac. all of these brands died in the 2000s inlcuding oldsmobile and they were all GM brands, hence why you mightve never heard of em, i only know them from forza and donut media if im honest
How far back did you check for this "every car that won Le Mans outright has been yourO'peein'"? I ask because Ford won OUTRIGHT from 1966 to 1969 and last I checked Ford is a "Merican company! Or that doesn't fit your short sighted view? Aston Martin is half-Kuwaiti because of their owners and Dodge is French-Italian because they share parts with Alfa-Romeo and other Fiat Group marques.
There's a reason why you don't hear the German national anthem when Toyota wins a race in the WEC or the Finnish national anthem in the case of the WRC.
It's a Japanese brand though and the engines were designed in Japan.
The later versions of the Ford GT40 were American designed & built & run & driven by Americans to win in 1967. Of course, as with ANY car there are components built by manufacturers from around the world. Most racing cars run American ATL fuel cells, doesn't mean they're American.
my whole life and I didn't know there was a "y" in Cadillac
As a ‘Murican I’ve noticed Cadillac is funny because it seems to have two very different demographics. The only people I see driving Cadillacs are old people and wannabe gangsta rappers.
Look, the GT40 couldn't have won Le Mans with the purley British teams, but conversley the americans teams couldn't have made a GT40 from scratch to win Le Man's. It took both nations to build the car. I mean, the Appendix J car was a stupid idea that killed one of the greatest endurance race driver winners/ engineers. They only made it so they could say it was all American.
Cadiyac pujo gayado... I'm here for it
4:17 I wouldn’t say this is entirely true, it’s just that the reality is the luxury sedan market has moved towards producing more performance oriented vehicles.
I mean, it was better than the other American prototype effort back then (Chrysler)
I only discovered this car about a month ago in a gtr2 mod
Dome s102.5?
Thank you for not stroking our egos. We mean well , but we are far too naive. (Great Content BTW)
37 yrs old. Never heard cadiyak before. I'm pretty sure there's an "L" or two in there somewhere.
Can u still change the transmission during the race? I thought that it was banned
Im certain you can Name an Oldsmobile. Tornado. A big Block powered Musclecar with FWD. 😂
Exploding was not good for the cars pace. lovely (:
Does being at the bottom of the scoreboard mean that you're the current winner?
I guess it does
I love this way of pronouncing Cadillac, the one I also often use
787b is overrated, just sayin, I know it's not relevant but it got mentioned and I hate how that car is so loved, it only sounded good, I love the engine but the win was lucky and the car I swear was in a slower class, won purely on luck
We talk about 24h, non stop....
It's like Bathurst, u don't win because u are good u win because u got lucky.
Why did you mention Ford GT40 0:21
The Ford GT40 chassis were all built in Britain until the MKIV, which was built in the US.
@@ALCTheBlade yes I do know that the bodies were made in UK, but still, it marks itself as “American vehicle”
@user-vq7zy7cv6k not when it comes to the location of construction. The manufacturer by which the GT40 was badged is American, but there are numerous scenarios where the cars or even teams that bear a manufacturer's name don't match the manufacturer's main location.
Toyota’s a European brand!? Mazda!?
The TS050 and GR010 are made in Germany, the 787B in the UK.
Brother
Fax is still in use
It's pronounced Cad-dil-ac, you dang European...
[Insert Clueless Emote Here]
Not a European, he's a dang Australasian...
he's not european 💀💀
Well the way he talks about caddilac makes it seem European, like don't shame the U.S for not winning le mans, australia hasn't had a car win it either
@@ryangold8517That’s because Aussies have humility.
Ok, as much as this car sucked, I'll admi5 that I love it lmao. It's such a cool looking car to me, and it has a goddamn V8.
The gt40 is an american race car as holman Moody is a american race car builder normal you never heard the name oldsmobile they didn't make cars in the 2000 neither they do day
hardly a real racecar, but if the Peugeot unserious-racecar counts for anything, so does the very poorly known Oldsmobile Aerotech
I thought Toyota was Japanese No, I’m outside of Europe has won Le Mans say that again
Love the way Americans and their efforts are portrayed the same way they portray Europe.
Missed opportunity to talk about the Oldsmobile Aurora, it's hopes to save Oldsmobile, and how unique it was. Not very journalistic or mature to just claim Oldsmobile Aurora is just an imaginary thing.
This is not a journalistic or mature channel
Ford is american and Mazda is japanese btw
But the cars they won Le Mans with were designed and made in Europe (although the GT40's Mk4 version was made in America, it's still based on a European design.)
@@FailedRacersWhat about the recent Toyota wins?
Designed and made in Germany
02:33 Phil Spencer? is that you??
I think you missed the Toyota TS050 and GR010 as LeMans winners. And you really need to learn to pronounce "Cadillac". There is no Y in Cadillac. I am a French Canadian and as such know how to pronounce Peugeot and Villeneuve, but I also know that Cadillac is an American name and is pronounced (/ˈkædɪlæk/). No wonder voice recognition software can't understand Aussies.
The TS050 and GR010 were designed and made in Germany (also Cadillac is a French name, just like Chevrolet, and we don't pronounce the t in Chevrolet)
@@FailedRacers I believe that these cars were developped by Toyota engineers in Cologne but the powertrains were fully designed and developped in Japan. "Morizo" does have his history at "the Ring" I guess all great rececars have some European ties. But as a french speaker, we pronounce L's.
Isnt British cars weird and unusual?
Also yes
Its funny because Cadillac is a french name and every time you say itt wrong it rustles my American jimmies. Also, aluminum 😂
failed racers gaming when
I am an avid sim racer, but I probably won't make a gaming channel.
@@FailedRacers aw, well your channel your choice man
6:40 haha you fool, im already susbcribed, your tricks wont work on me
kinda of funny, but in Russin PONOS(Panoz) means diarrhea
Nice try I’m already subscribed. Ha ha got you.
I take it you hate us over here…
I wouldn't want to live there myself, but it's just a bit of banter tbh.
Thank you for this video. How could such a cool looking racing car, by a make whose first Le Mans participation dates back half a century, suck?
I thought Toyota was Japans no one outside of Europe has won Le Mans say that again
The Cadillac North Star LMP Story. Aka the anti-Panoz video. Or Anti-Caddy Video.
I made a video where I pronounced Panoz wrong every time and you are pronouncing it the same way I did. Sus.
18:49 definitely not the cadillac worth buying it. Stay away.
Cedeack
Huh? How is the ford gt40 European?
Although powered by an American engine, the chassis was an update of a Lola Mk6, which was designed and built in the UK. Pretty much the only American part on the car was the engine. In fact, even the gearbox was German.
Couldn't listen to Cadyak ..
Tf is Cadiyac😂
bro you slated americans in this video lmao which is warented, oldsmobile were the oldest american brand and rivalled fiat, open, peugeot ect on age, they were huge from the 50s to the 80s mainly in america (like most us car companies) but died once american cars fell behind imports, like other brands such as saturn, hummer, and pontiac. all of these brands died in the 2000s inlcuding oldsmobile and they were all GM brands, hence why you mightve never heard of em, i only know them from forza and donut media if im honest
0:19 the ford gt is a American car and ford is a American company
It's an entirely American car except for the chassis, gearbox, bodywork, suspension, and every other component that's not the engine.
Haha America bad Europe gud
And america is a continent
2:48 joke ripped from top gear
Not quite. They've also done the same joke, but they weren't the first ones either. It's a bit of a common joke.
How far back did you check for this "every car that won Le Mans outright has been yourO'peein'"? I ask because Ford won OUTRIGHT from 1966 to 1969 and last I checked Ford is a "Merican company! Or that doesn't fit your short sighted view? And limiting it to "outright" instead of class leaves the Corvette right out too (they had to ask the Corvettes to detune their engine so the Furarewes and Porches might have a chance! Otherwise, sh1t video, bro.
Cant say Cadillac right, (so what if its a french word, its not how it was made/said in the u.s.
Doesnt know what an oldsmobile is..
Whole video.is trash.
