So after investing $1200 in welding, cutting equipment, and misc iron pieces, it's cheaper for most to buy the canopy... (great idea though)

Pretty much! I assume that most people who own a tractor, own a welder for the many welding repairs that most tractors seem to need.

Or just buy extruded aluminium or angle iron and bolt together.
