One of the few "noise guitarists" to ever gain mainstream rock fame. Yeah, he could play and write those great riffs, but when it comes down to Kurt's guitar playing this is always the stuff I remember.

That's the beauty. Cobain didn't care about sounding like a virtuoso guitar player, he said on inumerous occasions that punk rock should mean freedom, and play whatever you want to play, the way you want to play and that should be all if you were having fun. Seems like a lot of people have forgotten the meaning of the word "fun", they've just been thinking about being perfect and expecting people to love them for being so perfect the way they've been struggling to be.

If we're going to accept that Music is not sport then there is no "Best". Most of them were simply the first guitarists to be well known doing something. There are people all over the internet who can play a mixolydian mode far faster than Hendrix- so what?

I agree, it's impossible to do partly because it's so irrelevant. It's not sport, there is no "best" and there doesn't need to be. You want the right thing in the right place rather than as flashy as you can get where it doesn't fit- it's a piece of music not something to go "Look how excellent I am!". If you're playing for that reason then I'd say you're not really into the music at all.
Oh yeah , you try that on the big majority of Nirvana fans and watch them make any sense out of that ... not like I´m any elitist or anything silly like that - I just happen to have a punk/songwriters ( Dylan, Cohen , Lennon , Roky ( Erickson ) , Barrett etc, etc ... ) background who enables me to get what you´re saying 100% . I think it's amazing that he felt so comfortable playing that he just experimented and goofed off at live shows,it's part of the art,if you aren't having fun it's not worth being up there, unfortunately that is in part why we lost Kurt,he started feeling like his music was meaningless and the drugs robbed him of his creativity,sure he wasn't a shredder,but the moment I heard Nevermind,I knew they were gonna change music forever,and they did and still influence many today,and Teen Spirit was one of the best songs ever written,all you kids who act like people are posers because they like teen spirit are just clueless,it's normal to write a good song and get burnt out on playing it to the point of not even liking it,but that is the beauty of music,it's what appeals to the listener,Kurt was awesome,he wasn't murdered, nevermind was an amazing gift,enjoy what he created and quit pointing fingers at the ones he loved,let his soul rest easy and his loved ones go on in peace,and as far as these leads go,your talking about a man who named his band,fecal matter,Kurt had a sense of humor,he achieved what he wanted to and had fun,it's non of our business why he left this world,he left us a hand written apology and that's all we get,RIP Kurt,you changed the world.

okay. 95 % of the time it looked like he was messing around and the other 5 he was probably on drugs. Kurt cobain is a good guitarist in my opinion because I've seen a lot of his live performances and he does a good job. jimmy page sounded like shit a lot live also.

I think most of the time he played shitty leads, he did it on purpose. He just did not give a damn what anyone thought of him as a guitarist. If he wanted to he could have played way better lead guitar but he just did not care to. just like a lot of times he would yell and scream within a song totally out of key even though he could sing beautifully at any given point in time if he chose to.

If you had a single braincell active you would realize, and I wouldn't have to tell you, that, despite the fact that Kurt wasn't indeed a virtuoso of the guitar, he's most of the time joking around with these solos and that he was talented enough to produce some of the best songs and records in the rock history, rather you like it or not. Technique isn't everything. If it was, there wouldn't be so many "virtuosos" playing in shitty night clubs or in there rooms dreaming of celebrity.

Kurt Cobain probably could have been pretty decent at guitar if he actually cared about learning and practicing more advanced playing. He could play decent rhythm and some cool little licks here and there well enough. If you can get basic playing down there's nothing stopping you from doing more. He just didn't care.

These are some great solos that break down the barriers of what is music and what is not because to some this is just dreadful noise and rubbish guitar playing and yet Kurt is considered by many to be a great or influential guitar player. Of course, you have people before Kurt (Hendrix, for example) who did the same, if not more outlandish things with the guitar, and we are told that these ways of playing are non-musical, yet it still very much a part of that player's sound. For years the solo has been the time for the guitarist to showcase to the world how great of a player they are and here we have someone who is playing what the hell they want and not giving a shit about what anyone else thinks.
I've been a big nirvana fan since they first came out, no offense but i don't know whether he did it on purpose or not but those solos are terrible
