Just rewatching this to reaffirm what you already taught me. Thanks man! You are a good teacher, not impatient/hostile, and fun to watch. 2 years ago my best game was an 86, Last year I made my first hole in one, and this year I touched 76 1 time at the home track. My dad is trying to break 90 and we always revert back to your videos. Whadda Teachaa

Good teachers teach how to be self-reliant. This channel’s focus on self-evaluation is awesome. Thanks for all the time you put into this, Matt. I finally broke 100 (96 - and I got lazy on a couple of putts so it could’ve been a 94!) on vacation in Jamaica last week on a not-so-easy course. I would not have reached that goal if not for this channel and your work. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Love it love it love it, I have left my driver in the car for about two months now, I have been using my three hybrid off the Tee, And I have also been using my five iron off of the tee, The difference between my driver distance and my three hybrid distance is not meaningful enough to risk
1)out of bounds 2)in the water 3)in the fairway of the other hole ,etc. …. I have been thinking about your philosophys and have been hitting my first shot off the tee shorter and my second shot longer ,since my second shot is off the Fairway I’ve been hitting that shot longer, No Stress !
My 3 hybrid is becoming my confidence club always 190-200 carry …Matt you have changed my life !! You are a true Genius!

I was struggling at my home course a bit today off the tee. Shot a 45 on the front when I’m a 13 capper so I was slightly behind schedule. Remembered “lying zero” mentality and immediately stopped caring about my tee shots and relaxed and shot a 39 on the back. Thank you good sir

Understanding myself enough to know that I am much more comfortable with a full wedge of any kind, rather a partial shot from anywhere, including fairway, my game changed. My planning changed.. And most importantly, my scores changed. Easy life… And learned it from the Playa in Chief.

Matt, let me just say, I found your youtube channel a few months ago and already I found myself getting better. One of the hardest things was my alignment and posture and after reviewing your tips on posture, distance from ball, and alignment for beginners, I found myself striking the ball better than before. I was already golfing in the mid 80s, but now I'm striking the better and longer with more control. Thank you so much!

These strokes shaved videos have resonated with me. I am changing the way I play from ego golf to actual course management. The course I play most often has a few 300-350 Par 4's. I hit driver a long way & in the past I automatically pick this club, smash it & hope for either a putt or a close chip. But I often end up leaking left or right which leaves a challenging second shot under branches or a difficult angle to the green over bunkers. Last time I played I changed tactic on four tee shots - 5 iron three times & 4 hybrid once. I shot a 78. That's not my best score but it was certainly the most stress free. I am sure continually playing this way will enable more consistent shots as I am more relaxed. Great series, thanks.

Good info thanks Matt. Being a senior who took up golf late in life, my distances are not that long and tee shots with Driver rarely get me within wedge range. My home course has thick tree lines bordering the fairways, so accuracy beats distance every time. I put a 3 wood back in my bag solely for backup off the tee shots. I cannot reach the trees on some holes with it. I dropped my 5 wood for a 7 wood, mAinly because it was just as long , yet easier to hit off the grass. Getting the ball to my preferred approach distance zone, I have used hybrids 19 and 27 degrees. Then hybrid- irons at 29 and 33 degrees of loft. On our course carry distance dominates total distance, so hybrids work better. My preferred zone from the green is 110- 65 m because I use single length irons; they all feel the same to swing. It is way easier to get the ball to a 45m zone than a favourite distance! I like the decision tree you showed us. I have to force myself to drop the ego and advance towards the target. I use my single length 19 hybrid ( plays like a 22 but lower flight) . I would like you to do a video on decisions to make when the tee or second shot ends up in a less than ideal place please.

This is just incredible stuff. The real kind of help that will help a golfer allow himself/herself improve by making them think about every single shot to help stitch together a beautiful and coordinated round of golf, regardless of the outcome.
I have definitely learnt the most from this golf channel than many other technical experts cause they all focus too much on mechanics and muscle memory for improvement. Unfortunately, weekend golfers don’t have hours and hours to spend on mechanics.
This is where a system to play smart (read reduce/eliminate waste) really allows us to gain the most in the short time spent. Besides, it gets the mind really into the game. Thanks a lot Golfsidekick. Keep up the fantastic work!! 👍👍👍

  • @BaldyFella

I absolutely loved this. I have so many arguments with the 'Billy Big Balls' playas on your FB group who endlessly bang on about distance, distance, distance as if nothing else matters and you are Bang On about the dispersion with the driver which is accentuated when you play a windy course. It's not only oob and water which costs you but whacking it into trees, other fairways (blocked) or 6 inches of grass because you hit a vicious duck hook or wafty slice into oblivion. In UK the fairways are like concrete at the moment it is so hot here, so there is an even greater premium on accuracy and a good player will recognise that and ditch Driver and 3-wood for 4-iron, 3-4 hybrid or 5/7 wood knowing that they will get 30 yards of roll anyway.

    • @GolfSidekick
      @GolfSidekick  2 роки тому +1

lol. Anyone arguing about driver driver driver distance distance better in the rough longer etc conveniently forget About trees, water, gorse, bushes. These things cost shots and they aren’t in the fairway

I can't remember where I read it, but back in the '90's I read that a good tempo solves a lot of your swing ills. I've found that to be true... tempo is the swing Queen in my opinion, subjugated only to King Impact.

I’ve been alternating at my home course this year playing back tees or middle tees. I enjoy the mid tees a lot as it encourages me to hit more hybrids/5 irons off the tee to hit to my target approach range. From the back tees it’s a lot more driver/3 wood all day so it keeps me on my toes working on all my clubs

Couldn’t agree with this more. Have been struggling to crack 80s in the last year. Hit 82 yesterday and can easily think of 6 strokes I could have saved myself from using this system including a double bogey on 18 when I pulled a driver when I knew it was the wrong club.

I watch a number of vlogs dedicated to technique, but there is only one playa in chief who is teaching the mental game of course strategy! Grip, setup, swing plane… they all are important… you’ve got to hit the damn ball! But how you play the game is far more important, and you are far more dedicated to that goal . Any truly honest player who wants to improve acknowledges that strategy will lower scores far faster than an extra ten yards into OB. Keep up the good work, and thanks very much for your help!

Do you agree that the clubs that cause you trouble should not only be practised at the range, but also on course? I got this advise from my Pro who told me to do one round, dont keep score and use driver from all tees (except par3), to get used to the nerves, to learn to be precise, etc. Of course, when wanting to shoot a lower score, do the bag audit !!

I’m definitely this dude lol. I got a 405 stroke index 1 first hole I pull driver because yeah exactly what you say. I’m right playing a draw that doesn’t come back because it’s first shot or i do bring it back but down number 9s tee box. When I know I can hit 2 4 hybrids and have a chance. Or a 4 and a 5 and never be over the trees with worst case being a chip for 3rd shot. But what I do I’m behind the trees punching it back into play with 140 left to green. 3rd shot end up same place the 4 hy 4 hy would get me but instead of 3rd shot I’m now on 4 stressing a perfect chip shot trying to hole the chip, either getting yippies chunk, or hitting it and landing it right at the hole rolling past 15 feet then stressing to make a 15 foot putt to save bogey miss it then stressing the 4 footer I have left for double and sometimes miss that take the triple max and rounds already screwed. We only play a triple max at my cc for pace of play were it’s a busy 9 hole course or sometimes it could be worse. But I do the 4 4 method well and I’m bogey sometimes par. But something about first hole of the day want to pull driver and smash it. 2nd hole im 366 I’m hitting 4 hybrid with about 140-150 in and usually paring the hole. But already +2 +3 + 4 instead of plus 1 at most. Same on 9 it’s the only short 290 or less par 4 that has evaded me all this time. I’ll need a par on days I’m playing well to score under 40 once for 36 I pull driver like today is the day, leave myself 20 yards out duff the chip get a bogey

My driver was the last club in my bag to click. With that being said I pull driver confidently knowing that I’m setup, aligned and ready to rip it. It took a lot of practice, lessons with a pro. But I hit 4i beautifully along with all my other clubs. I’ll drive and only have 30 yards to the green on a 370 yard hole basically I can’t see the ball land because it’s going so far . It’s fun but sometimes I like a full iron shot into the green and will use less than driver.

Love all the content, I had my own "Hero" tee shot moment this weekend that led to a bogey and probably should have been a double. I wonder if you'll cover the subject of Tee Box Selection during Phase6??
I'm a 6 handicap and don't play from the tips on most courses, I like playing from 6200-6500 yrds. But I see players who top or even whiff their tee shots consistently playing from 6600 (usually Blues). I don't understand this, why make a game that is already infuriating even harder by playing too far back? Let's hear your thoughts!

Still trying to get handicap from 22 to a 15. Since I am 59 I have to hit from farther back at our club when we play. This causes me trouble with tee ball. I can hit driver and sometimes it is good but sometimes I have a slice. If I hit a 5 wood in the fairway I am too short. Being a short hitter sucks . 5 iron is my 150 club.

Pw and 9 iron on the tee of a par 3 give me problems, when it’s a good shot boy is it good. But one has water so I tend to hit a 60 to about 10 yards before the water hit another 60 onto the green. 2 shots yes, but it’s 2 and not 3 by a drop chipping into the green. The other I’ve developed another approach. A punch shot 6 iron low basically rolling the entire time. Both play on average at 140. The second I just have to hit a runner up the right side the slope will roll it down. Ugly golf but it’s a lot better than getting into trouble. I need to work on 2 clubs. The 120-125 and the 150-160. Can’t stand that I’ve been able to work out a fairway finder I mean I can hit 6 of 7 fairways in a round (9 holes) but I get at the 120-150 and about 30 percent of the time I can land the green on a basic shot. I’m a 81-85 golfer

Also have a problem with the 3 hybrid 5-6 wood, will have 205 in and hit it bad. I’ll still hit it though because even if I fat or thin it it will give me a roll out to a shot that I can hit. So it’s either at it or I’ve hit it terrible and it’s leaving me a wedge in for my 3rd shot on a par 5

I think I'm struggling with the concept of when to hit my driver and when to hit other clubs. I seem to just want to play the most maximum distance club I can. For example a par 5, I hit the driver as well as I can, then I usually use a 3 wood to a 5 iron depending on distance I need. Should I rather be pulling out something even shorter to hit to a distance after my drive to hit to a certain distance to then iron in at a distance I prefer? Even if Im comfortable hitting those longer irons?

    • @MrC4ctu5
      @MrC4ctu5 2 роки тому

Ideally you'd hit your second shot with a club you're comfortable with to a distance you're comfortable with getting it on the green. If you're comfortable with a 5 iron but it leaves you with idk, 63 yards to the pin and that's an awkward 3/4 wedge maybe take 6 or 7 iron instead so you have a nice full swing left.
      If that makes sense.

I’ll tell you, changing par is everything. That 500 yard par 5 is now a par 7… do to my 17.9 handicap.
that means 5 100 yard shots for green in regulation and 2 putts for par.. THIS is where you’re going to struggle mentally. If I go balls to the wall on this hole with driver and woods, I’ll normally shoot a 7 anyway, but with bad shots that reduce my confidence. So where is the middle ground? Let’s say instead of 5 100 yard shots to the green, I do two 175 yard shots and then 1 150 yard shot to hit the green. Okay, on the green in 3 shots with a chance for albatross based on my adjusted par. With incredibly reduced risk.
This would be considered attacking the hole. Once you change par on the score card, work out what all clubs you need to HIT YOUR NEW PAR, and take the rest out of the bag, for one round. Go out and prove to yourself that you can even do it. Then, start attacking holes. You’ll find you’ll use the same few clubs over and over, grinding them into your soul, on the course. They’ll become undeniable for a good outcome. You’ll start getting upset when they go 5 or 6 yards further, cause you didn’t plan for it.. striking with every club will start becoming monotonous and almost boring. then, start attacking a little more.

Ouch… that P word hurt my soul. And the idea of taking lessons, and essentially starting over, doesn’t make me feel much better! lol Unfortunately I’m worried that I’m already approaching this destination as I still can’t hit my driver. I used a 4I (160 yds) to break 100, a 7 wood ((190 yds) to break 90, and now attempting to use the driver (220 yds) to break 80 and I just can’t get it consistent… so it’s definitely not stress free on the course.

Got down to 11 in a few years and ended up with yips off the tee. Literally was like a virus that went down from driver to 3w to hybrid in the end was hitting 4 iron off the tee. Unfortunately even though it's in play it makes you hit anything from a long iron up to a 3w second shot on longer par 4s and puts a ton of pressure on the rest of the game. It's still better than hitting drives off the planet but yeah... Not really possible to play to the same standard from 60 yards back every approach.

You could always try a Golf Game Reboot: leave all of your clubs at home except a 7i, PW, and putter. The pitching wedge is optional.

See a pro for help with striking if you can, but at least do as previous commenter said. Go to the forward tees, tee off with your 9 iron. 7 iron. Whatever is comfortable. Start from there playa.

The real problem with listening to the people talking about strokes gained for driver vs 3W is that they aren't bad golfers. I've seen videos where they compare a driver they hit 30 yards further than their 3W, but notice that the drive was 3 yards off the fairway in rough. Sure, 30 yards extra and in the first cut of rough seems like a good trade, but I know that, in my game, the driver is deep in the trees or in someone's backyard, not just off the fairway. There are no strokes gained by taking a penalty and a drop!
