@@thescoringmethodI can give you a long list. Maybe just do one video on each one. The vast majority of golfers are not going to be that interested in these stats/lessons/rules. Only just seen this comment. Thank you so much for the amazingly kind words having a lot of fun sharing my passion for coaching. Let me know what the content videos you’d like to see.
I've learned that the hybrid is the shot for me from around the green. Sometimes I hit it too far, but I've never chunked a hybrid and left it still off the green!
Nice tips. My aim for 2024 is breaking 85... I realize now that the mental trick I've been applying for years (play the course shot by shot, and always think my next shot will be fabulous) may be good to keep up morale, but also leads to shots that are too risky. Worked fine to break 90, but unless I have an excellent scrambling or driving day, it kept me stuck in the high 80's. Now it's time to get serious about avoiding mistakes. First attempt on a soft and muddy 9 holes home course I ended up 5 above par, just by adopting my course management to avoid any double bogeys. True, I have a new driver too after 10 years with more foregiveness, so that contributed too, but the mindset is different: instead of feeling that I would play a long iron for a GIR fabulous, I just played a shorter (more go to club) iron shorter but on average more accurate. A fabulously flushed shot is a good feeling with any club. I like were this is going.
This was actually some good advice. I had been looking for more strategy/course management videos on UA-cam because these are the easiest to incorporate into my own game. There are already too many technique videos that present so many pointers that are impossible to remember unless you're watching the video while at the golf course.
Randomly reading comments. If you can handle sacrilege and sarcasm as humor, then I strongly advise the Golf Sidekick. He does give a very minor amount of technique, but mostly mental and course strategies. Check out the sacred lectures. Cheers!
I always bump and run from near the green or even further out if the lie is tight. My go to club for the is the 8 iron. I only try to pitch if there is nice fluffy grass under the ball.
This was great, thanks. Two thoughts: 1) Can you go out with a high handicapper, get them to hit the shot they would; then give them another ball and advise them on how you would approach it, and get them to hit that shot? I would volunteer my high handicap services if I was closer haha. 2) The green target selection was really helpful. More examples of this on different greens would be really helpful! Thanks again! Thanks again!
I actually played today and tried it out! Ironically found myself in more bunkers than usual (new course to me) but had much more makeable chips/up and down chances. I'll try it on my home course next. Usually I more just pick a side to "miss" to and then whether I want to be front/middle/back of the green.@@thescoringmethod
That is so great to hear and knowing that Jack, Nicholas’s dad work with him to hit the middle of every Green makes me think that it probably works pretty well
Excellent course management video! I promise to try to do this this year😂. I guess this is what they mean by that silly phrase 'playing within yourself'😂 Thanks!
Totally agree.... basically, use whatever club keeps you in the fairway....and whatever club gives you the best approach shot on to the green and/or close. On fringe shots where I can use the putter gives mw more control and/or 8i for a bump and run. I two put more often then. Wedges are a hit or miss. 😉
I would love to see a video on the 40-50, and 70 to 100 yard shots approach suggestions like you did with the 130 and by the green shots. I struggle from 100 and in.
My pleasure it is just so much fun to be out there creating content and getting all these amazing comments just wants me to get up there and make more. Please let me know if there are specific things you’d like to know more about to help you achieve your goals.
Loved this video! I really appreciated that you didn't just say "NEVER do X or ALWAYS do Y" but you gave us hackers a process to figure out what is most effective for each individual. Definitely gonna test this out on the course soon.
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for the kind words Kevin be sure to let me know any other videos you’d like us to create to help you lower scores.
It's easy to understand the concept when you play a really challenging course and conversely easy to go away from it when you play just an average course.
Facts. I tried this yesterday eve PW vs LW with 4 balls. One shot w the LW was pure ... medium flight two hop stopper 6 inches from the hole. The kinda shot you tell your friends about. One was a whiff UNDER the ball, one was within 4 feet of the hole and one thin and 20 feet past. PW: 2 were left 3 feet from hole, one thin was 7 feet and the other a tad heavy and short about 8 feet short but uphill. Lesson... PW all day long unless i have to use loft to get over trouble. Loft is not your friend when there's green to work with.
My WHS Index is just under 21. "Breaking 85" has been a great series of videos, thank you! By clubbing up, playing to safe targets & improving my long 1st putt accuracy, I'm consistently hitting closer to 90, with accusations of banditry😂. I'm sticking at this until I get below 85👍 and owe you a 🍻
Simon that’s just awesome my man I’ve only just seen these comments wasn’t sure how to find them in UA-cam I know that sounds bad but my focus is on creating content and coaching. Didn’t realize I was getting so many great comments would love to see what are the videos you’d like us to make and make sure to keep us updated on when you break 85.
@@thescoringmethod Update: I've just returned from a 1 week coaching trip organised by Goodwood. Of course, the tee, range and sand lessons were amazing and helped fixed some weaknesses in my game. However, the shared insight from our pros was eye-opening. They both reiterated decision-making (taking my medicine, clubbing up to address my failed approach shots, less use of driver off the tee etc), but my biggest takeaway: stop putting so many cards in!!🥴🥴 Why? Because I need to take more time practicing shots on the course regardless of outcome. Time will tell!
Great, practical advice. When you were green side chipping, without a putter, I was all set to disagree. You then mentioned trying hybrid and putter as well. For golfers who never practice chipping - you know who you are - putter and hybrid are relatively easy clubs to not epically fail at. The same can not be said of lob and sand wedge with zero practice.
“Use your data…” that’s fantastic advice! Too many mid handicappers look at your stats and try to mimic them. But everybody is different. Find out what you do, get the hard stats, own it, and make the necessary adjustments.
Great video! Very helpful information! However to find the average of a distance for more than one shot, you would add the shots together and then divide by the number of shots hit. That’s how to get the average distance to the hole. So your averages are a lot closer than you explained. Not taking anything away from the info, just making sure people are calculating their averages correctly.
Ok let’s double check the math First shot was 9 paces so x3 = 27ft 2nd shot was 6 paces so x3 = 18ft 3rd shot was 12 paces so X3 = 36 So 27+18+36 = 81 ft now divide that my 3 balls = 27ft Which is exactly the same as the total paces as you have 3 balls and a pace is 3 ft. Hope this helps.
Played in a national scramble and we missed winning the regional event by 0.15 shots. We lost it with a simple, uphill 40 foot chip where all three players used a lob wedge - two fat, one skinny, then took us two putts for a bogey. I bump and run a 7-iron, or putt if suitable. TSM offers great advice for all players.
Long par 4,s ( don’t try and leather a hybrid or smash a 5 wood) hoping to get there ! Trying to break 85, hit a relaxed normal tempo 6 iron to the apron. If you op and down ( great) if u go ou don’t and make a bogey ( that’s also great)
Go watch Rick Shiels. He lasers flag (i.e. 177y), pulls out a 7i (which he once hit 180 on a simulator) and hits a 162y high fade which plugs into the bunker. 😃
😂 oh I just put a huge smile on my face that’s like most of my students they once hit it 190 or the sixth side, so why not pull it out every hole when I’m at 190.
Golfing dynamics are not as easily “learned”. First you need to know your own game and shots, shape your shots, then strategize the course. Learning your course and playing it strategically is the most important aspect of low handicaps. Well done presentation.
These are great tips. The lead in is funny. There is one problem though. When playing in a group or a busy golf course it slows down overall play and lengthens rounds. Great if you are playing when no one around.
I think when you learn it yes it does take more time but the next thing you know it just becomes a natural instinct and you’re able to speed up play because you’re taking less shots
That’s a great comment. You have to pick the shop that you believe can get to the Whole, the closest, the most consistently and sometimes it really slow greens. The solution might be to pitch it back there if you’re a better golfer.
Carey is to start to understand how to take the big numbers off the scorecard and that means put the ball and play not fixing the slice. Just never taking the driver out. Not hitting flock shots around the green hitting hybrid chips and making sure you get the practice screen before you play and work on putting pace and short putts so you avoid the three putts. I see that most people believe that they need to work on their skill sets, rather than just their scoring.
I missed it at first too. He's counting in yards, but wants the result in feet. Hence a multiplication by 3 to change units, prior to the division by 3 for the average (effectively cancelling each other out) 🤓
Surely though , if you are half decent out of bunkers then you don’t have to fear them that much. It might mean a bogey maybe , if you know you usually get out first time and up to 10 feet from the hole. Yes , staying out of the water is much more important , but one answer would be to improve our bunker play? Sometimes I play to avoid a bunker and end up in three putt territory , and some bunkers are more dangerous than others.
That’s a great point I think the thing about the three pet though is it still allows you to make the bogey. Where is the bunker can lead to even higher scores. But being able to have a basic pit shot out of the bunker with the right set up and get out first time is definitely a key step to consistently to breaking 85
@@thescoringmethod Yes , I see. A lot depends on your skill set. I've always felt ok out of bunkers and getting out first time to somewhere around 10-20 feet or maybe better. But yes , I do try to avoid them and I would sooner be on the green. And you can get a horrible lie or bad stance in a bunker. suppose much depends on whether you have "bunker fear " or not. Everyone has their thing , for me its tight lies. If I feel I can get a club under the ball ( even thick rough) then I'm ok.
uuum.. when you step off distances you need to factor foot size vs gait distance. each stride will be nearly 3ft on avg, regardless of which ‘somatotype’ a person is (endo/meso/ecto). so stepping off putt distances is more heel-toe than full strides; but oc you may disagree.
That makes sense. I think if players can get it with in 20% accuracy that works just fine. As long as they don’t start telling fish stories I HIT THIS CLOSE!!!
With in reason. I would say you need to know how avoid the trouble by being able to miss it where you can score. As you get better you get to hit it where you want more often but still start with where you can’t go.
I would have putted those chips. But that’s because I can’t chip. My best score was 92. I’m a complete beginner. I have no idea what is a good score is. Haha
Keep watching the videos. Also check out www.thescoringmethod.com if you want to play your best golf and learn how to shoot lower scores guaranteed this is the place to start.
I'll be honest, when I started breaking 85, I didn't really think of any of these things. I knew my game. My shots became fairly predictable. I hit more fairways, which allowed me to hit more greens, which allowed me to make more pars and birdies. It's really that simple. Start at the tee and work your way down the hole., Think of it like billiards; you're always setting yourself up for the next shot. I'm not saying there's no merit to any of this, I'm just saying that's how it was for me 40 years ago when I first started hitting low 80's.
3 chips with Pwedge. Total distance for 3 balls = 7ft. 7 ft divided by 3 = 2 ⅓ ft avg per chip! If you averaged 7 ft per chip, esch ball would be 7 ft (or 6 ft,7 ft, and 8 ft) from cup, Where did you learn your math?
Let’s take a deep breath now before we start judging each other. In the video you will see me pace off 7 steps so not 7 feet but seven paces which average 3 ft per pace. Seven pieces times three equals 21 feet divided by 3 golf balls equals an average of 7 feet.
Hey, I love the honest feedback it’s funny sometimes how we don’t know that we’re repeating ourselves over and over only when someone’s honest enough to give you a good critique that helps
That is a really great point if you have the opportunity to put it always put it. If not, then take the hybrid if you can’t take the hybrid, then use the bump and run chip. If you can’t ship it then use the pitch if you can’t pitch it, then lob it, but most people just go straight to the lob wedge and the basic fringe part or chip into a difficult shot. Really appreciate the comment.
Uhm, at 4:41, half of that green quadrant is NOT on the green, 50% of shots to that green area will be in the rough. Aim for the fattest part of the green closest to the flag. In this case, the middle of the green. That green quadrant would fit nicely on the green itself. Go for the middle.
Agree in someway but it really depends on the persons dispersion if they’re missing the ball 20 to 30 yards off of their intended target then I would suggest if there’s a water hazard 15 yards left of the flag they would need to aim 15 yards right of the flag, which may put them off the green, but is better than being in the water. What are your thoughts?
Trust me i know about blow up holes. In 2011 I was leading my club championship after the first round at even. Day 2 standing on the 13th tee tied for the lead. 345 yd par 4, needless to say i end up with a 9 on the hole, really bad decisions for the entire hole.
@@thescoringmethodwish I could get my weekend Golf Group to understand this!!!😢 everybody wants to hit from 'the tips'! Stupid and it makes the game less enjoyable😢
Great video. I started using the "rule of 12" for chipping and my game around the green has changed a TON... and its mostly because I started chipping with a lot of other clubs besides the 60 degree... thus learning MY OWN GAME. Rule of 12 video: ua-cam.com/video/VONGHt3HBoo/v-deo.html
Buddy you do not “average” 27 from the hole dispersions that would be your maximum. The average would be divided by 3. Otherwise you have to call it max dispersion not average. Averaging a group requires dividing by the number of tries.
If the pace is roughly 1 yard (3 ft), you add the pace count of all 3 (27 yards in the video), 27 yards divided by 3 is…27 feet (9 yards). You might have missed the conversion. 19 feet is the tour average. Mine for the three I hit was 27 feet as I showed.
I'd offer a slight amendment to the 3-ball average trick; try to ignore the previous shot's finish so you don't learn from it. You don't get 2 mulligans in real life 😆
If you watch the first minute of the video on mute, you’d 100% be able to tell this dude is English by how out of place he looks throwing his damn clubs
I would disagree with the first one and give us a suggestion for the second. I would head to the putting green and chipping green, not the range and then I would make sure I’m watching the right UA-cam channels.

Great insight! Thanks for sharing and glad it helped. Avoiding blow up holes is huge for you to accomplish your goal!
This was actually some good advice. I had been looking for more strategy/course management videos on UA-cam because these are the easiest to incorporate into my own game. There are already too many technique videos that present so many pointers that are impossible to remember unless you're watching the video while at the golf course.
With better strategy you can definitely shoot lower scores with the swing you have today.
Randomly reading comments. If you can handle sacrilege and sarcasm as humor, then I strongly advise the Golf Sidekick. He does give a very minor amount of technique, but mostly mental and course strategies. Check out the sacred lectures. Cheers!
Tried to tomahawk my lobwedge into the lake but missed, do you think I used too much forearm rotation?
100%. Maybe the Hammer throw would be the proper choice.
@thescoringmethod I just don't like to draw attention to myself with the "hammer throw" war cry
Too much Supra-nation and not enough lower body using ground forces😂
@@robertcourt8593 stick with the classy club toss instead
I always bump and run from near the green or even further out if the lie is tight. My go to club for the is the 8 iron. I only try to pitch if there is nice fluffy grass under the ball.
Great strategy! Simple conservative chips that set up an easy 2 putt are key. Don't play risky shots that can lead to double bogeys!
One of my buddies is a master at bump and runs. He usually uses one of his hybrids or a 7 iron. Mostly he does it with his hybrid though.
Excellent tips. Definitely going to be using my laser/GPS more than just the distance to the flag.
Happy to hear that! So important to start understanding how to strategically make your way around the golf course.
This was great, thanks.
Two thoughts:
1) Can you go out with a high handicapper, get them to hit the shot they would; then give them another ball and advise them on how you would approach it, and get them to hit that shot? I would volunteer my high handicap services if I was closer haha.
2) The green target selection was really helpful. More examples of this on different greens would be really helpful!
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Great idea! We'll definitely do that.
Where do you play golf lets get you out to film your skills.
🎉 Thanks going to try the PW chipping
Also try the 7 iron for the longer shots and hybrid from the fringe
Love this!! I'm scratch and I got a lot out of this video. Sending it to all my biddies who shoot in the 90s
Love it! Hopefully it helps them break 90 a bit more!
Your voice and delivery is spot on Colin Montgomery
Monty True legend.
This has to be one of the simplest yet most enlightening videos I have ever watched. Thank you!
Wow, thank you for the amazingly kind words. Glad that you’re liking the content lots more to come.
Very practical advise
Bob, thank you my man keep us updated on how it’s coming along. Look forward to hearing about Lois scores here real soon.
You re much needed and easy to watch !
Thank you for the kind words.
Sir where have you been all of my life! Amazingly accurate information! Thank you- new subscriber
Welcome aboard! So great to hear you find the content so valuable.
Awesome video. Loved the clarity of the quadrant approach to the green!
Glad it was helpful! Try it out next time you at the course and let us know how it goes.
I’m glad to hear you’re able to Yucett keep us up-to-date on how the score is coming
Playing to my misses and aiming for safety instead of the pin has helped my scoring a ton
That is so great to hear and knowing that Jack, Nicholas’s dad work with him to hit the middle of every Green makes me think that it probably works pretty well
Conservative strategy, cocky swing
Great video. Thanks for the content/advice.
Glad it was helpful!
What are the contact would you like to see? How can we help you achieve your golfing goals
Excellent course management video! I promise to try to do this this year😂. I guess this is what they mean by that silly phrase 'playing within yourself'😂 Thanks!
Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. Have you been able to put into play yet? Hope it’s gonna bring you some low scores.
Truly wise strategy! I will definitely use it.
Were you able to check out the wedge video I put together hopefully that’ll help you to get some good distances and saves some strokes
Really helpful video. Awesome content.
Glad it was helpful! What would you like more of Jimmy ?
I would love to see a video on the 40-50, and 70 to 100 yard shots approach suggestions like you did with the 130 and by the green shots. I struggle from 100 and in.
Brilliant video. Thanks. Just discovered on UA-cam, will now be checking out the back catalogue 😂
Appreciate the comment!! Hope some of the other past vids help as well.
I will say I love using a 52° for short chips, 8 iron bump and run when I’m short of the green in the fairway
Two tools are better than one maybe try adding the hybrid as a 3rd.
Thankyou for some valuable advice.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank Kev!!! Let me know how it helps your score
You're so welcome! Thank you so much for the kind words Kevin be sure to let me know any other videos you’d like us to create to help you lower scores.
Great video and advice! Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!
So helpful
Glad you think so!
100% use the ground at all times if possible
The ball can't go in the hole if it's flying through the air😂
Is this at Darkhorse?
Yes indeed.
Definitely recommend testing the hybrid and putter. Most golfers should be pulling out those options before a lob wedge.
Ok let’s double check the math
First shot was 9 paces so x3 = 27ft
2nd shot was 6 paces so x3 = 18ft
3rd shot was 12 paces so X3 = 36
So 27+18+36 = 81 ft now divide that my 3 balls = 27ft
Which is exactly the same as the total paces as you have 3 balls and a pace is 3 ft. Hope this helps.
@@thescoringmethod I didn’t realize you were converting from yards to feet. I missed that part.
Congrats on runner up you and you learned a lot which is the most important.
New fan of the channel after the intro
Long par 4,s ( don’t try and leather a hybrid or smash a 5 wood) hoping to get there !
Trying to break 85, hit a relaxed normal tempo 6 iron to the apron.
If you op and down ( great) if u go ou don’t and make a bogey ( that’s also great)
Great feedback.
I’m now moving from breaking 90 to breaking 85 ⛳️
Congrats. Keep me updated.
Stopped watching RS simply because he's not very good with advice and his constant negativity.
Is a Bump-and-Run easier on nicer greens? I find my home track has enough spike marks and stray blades of grass that the roll-out dies too quickly.
Still probably gonna be way less punishing on a mishit
That’s a great comment. You have to pick the shop that you believe can get to the Whole, the closest, the most consistently and sometimes it really slow greens. The solution might be to pitch it back there if you’re a better golfer.
Best part of this advice is no swing changes required, no skill changes required, no lessons required
I love the advice in this video. I’m going to subscribe. One thing tho, that’s not how you find average.
Jason, give me a thought and feedback when you say that’s not how you find your average could you give more insights on that?
Video in the work and on its way
That’s a great point I think the thing about the three pet though is it still allows you to make the bogey.
Is this the 18th at Dark Horse?
You got it!
He is PGA, glad I found this
Keep washing Steve lots of more content to come always appreciate the comments
uuum.. when you step off distances you need to factor foot size vs gait distance. each stride will be nearly 3ft on avg, regardless of which ‘somatotype’ a person is (endo/meso/ecto). so stepping off putt distances is more heel-toe than full strides; but oc you may disagree.
That makes sense. I think if players can get it with in 20% accuracy that works just fine. As long as they don’t start telling fish stories I HIT THIS CLOSE!!!
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!
😃 unfortunately not on You tube so now I’m seeing how much people want and need scoring coaching spread the word.
You gotta first be able to hit it where you're aiming too.
With in reason. I would say you need to know how avoid the trouble by being able to miss it where you can score. As you get better you get to hit it where you want more often but still start with where you can’t go.
Hahahahhaa yes brother. It’s hard to make a gameplan around an incinsittent swing
The problem with the hammer throw is trying to retrieve it out of a tree.
By the way, great video.
You want it to stay up there that’s true PGA Pro skills
Glad you like the video and sometimes you don’t wanna get it back out of the tree that is just needs to stay there
I would have putted those chips.
This is money….thank you
Thanks!
Sure fire way to break 85 is to head to #19 when the shot count hits 84.
That’s one way or use the scoring method and I guarantee you break 85
Surely its 27 divided by 3 ? Equals 9 , if you add all three you must divide by three for an average ..
Yes and no. So 27 paces times by 3 to make feet then dived by 3 as you have 3 golf balls = 27 they cancel each other out
If I can break 100 would be excited.
Let’s get after it
Now i regret why i didn't watch t
You before i played earlier.
Well, you’ve seen it now she ready for your next round
yah, your expecting me to not misshit left or right lol, getting to the one quadrant is about the same as aiming for the flag.
Step 1 - Leave driver at home.
Amen.
i prefer bunker then too long into the bushes tho
Excellent video. But you might want to go ahead and nix the "go ahead"s : )
Hey, I love the honest feedback it’s funny sometimes how we don’t know that we’re repeating ourselves over and over only when someone’s honest enough to give you a good critique that helps
For most high handicappers all those chips should have been puts.
That bump and run was a 2.5 average distance from the hole not a 7. 7 is the max just saying.
The only strategy for me to shoot 85 is to only play 9 holes.
Make more par's.
I love more pars but that’s to be single digits. To break 85 it’s about getting rid of blow up holes.
Trust me i know about blow up holes. In 2011 I was leading my club championship after the first round at even. Day 2 standing on the 13th tee tied for the lead. 345 yd par 4, needless to say i end up with a 9 on the hole, really bad decisions for the entire hole.
😂👌🏼💥
Great glad it’s bringing you a smile. Hope it also helps you to shoot lower scores.
I always tell people that suck, to move up a set of tees 😂
Honestly most people should move up a set of tees.
Take your 5 iron carry distance * 36 and that distance should be what tees you play from.
You don't get 2 mulligans in real life 😆
When you start using this you realise how many good shots are miss hits!
Lower scores in Golf is all about good misses.
I’m definitely ‘the English tosser’…

Average is ok to use but better to use 90% CI method, it reduces the skew from outer extremities and gives a more accurate reflection
Sneaky good advice
Funny that you had to duff it on purpose to "prove" your point.
Not saying the point is not valid though. But it was very obvious...
Trust me, I have duffed it before in pressure situations in tournaments oral human.

go to the driving range to play better golf. Stay off youtube channels.
I would disagree with the first one and give us a suggestion for the second. I would head to the putting green and chipping green, not the range and then I would make sure I’m watching the right UA-cam channels.
