Love your videos. I'm a high handicapper and your mental game and course management advice has helped tremendously. I plan on trying that course you're playing next week. Cheers and keep the great videos coming 🏌️
Thank you for your uploads :) Over the last 2 months I have played 5 rounds and for each round, been deliberately only teeing off with 6 and 7 irons on par 4s and 5s, I have also been drilling into my head the concept of 'get the tee shot in play, let's make sure we have a 2nd shot to hit with that same ball instead of taking a drop and hitting a 3rd'. Thanks to watching your videos and putting into practice 'working backwards from the green to the tee, I have been scoring between 15 and 20 over par for each of my last 5 rounds, it's made a huge difference compared to between 22 and 28 over par that I was scoring before. I am a long hitter and sometimes my playing partners comment on why I don't use any club above a 6 iron. I answer their comments at the end of the round by getting them to look at my scorecard (best result is birdie and worst is a double, but it is usually pars and bogeys galore for at least 15 holes). Makes such a huge difference when I am now consistently hitting stress-free shots and giving myself chances to putt for birdies, golf becomes so much more enjoyable, thanks again Matt
The scorecard is the only thing that counts. Every penalty is a killer, the stress they produce can ruin most players. Your playing partners notice the lack of doubles, that you're in the fairway AGAIN, they'll put pressure on themselves that creates errors on their games. Stress free is so much more fun. I've been having trouble with a short par 4, last round I hit to the front of the fringe, avoided the water and sand that surround 75-80% of that green, chipped close, 1 putt par. Elated to break the double, triple bogey streak I had been on for that hole. That par also closed out the match. Win win.
I used to think "stress free golf" was me hitting 2 iron or 3 wood rather than driver on tight driving holes. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that those clubs were still long enough to bring OB into play on some of those holes and short enough to bring trouble into play on others on my home course. There's one easy par 4 that I would pull hook OB at least once every five rounds even with 2 iron. Now I play 6 iron and even with a horrendously duck hooked shot I end up in the fairway just short of a FW bunker with, at most, a 7 iron into the green. Scoring average on that hole has plummeted for me. The other change I made was to stop laying back on the par 5s because the widest part of the fairway is where my driver lands.
Im on hole 17. Got two four man scrambles in front of me as I’m watching this video with two par 4s left playa. Currently 22 degrees in Chicago but the way of the playa has me pushing through the elements
I actually have so much fun golfing now! The last 2 rounds 100% of my shots were in the fairway. Every time one of my golfing buddies breaks out his 3 wood or 4 hybrid for that 225yd second shot on the par-5 I just sit in the golf cart and chuckle. To me 225 is a 125yd 8I and a GW sitting within 20' of the pin for the birdie try. Went from a 23Hcp to a 13Hcp from the White T's.......Thank you!!
Preaching the gospel in this video. Another way to think about it is to watch kids who play golf. I caddy for my son (7) and have rediscovered my love of proper course management. He does not have the strength to play for the greens from the rough, sand, or trouble so being accurate with his shots is hugely important. Even one foot into the rough means trouble. Playing multiple lay ups properly is a skill! If you (or your kids) can successfully execute a tee shot, a layup, a full wedge, and two putts on a par 5 you will know how good it feels! Learn to hit the basic shots before moving on to anything else.
Through the years of listening to the simple Waddaplaya golf advice from Matt I have broken 80 consistantly and have even shot a -1 on 18 and a -5 on 9. He has made golf fun again. Follow his advice, go back and watch his earlier videos as well, like when he was learning to play left handed to show how his method works for beginners as well.
03:28 honestly i absolutely love bunker shots ❤ I especially love a plugged lie... Incredible fun splashing a huge amount of sand and getting it close or holing it. golf is like a throw-back to youth playing an obstacle course and bunkers are just part of the fun imho. The harder, the more unique obstacles the better and more fun!
A messed up reasonable shot most often does not put you into worse shape. A reasonable, in skill shot usually leaves you in an OK position needing one extra stroke at most.
Great tips and video. That must be your home course there in Thailand. The one caddy is in a lot of your videos. Keep the awesome content coming--thanks!

I took your advice and took out my driver and 3/5 woods out of my bag and shot 74. My usual playing partner didn’t even notice till 6 holes in and I was -1. Here's for the algorithm, mentality game is really helpful for n00bs just starting like myself. I'm starting to find my "comfort" shot so hopefully it translates to fun on the courses!
Key phrase that is the underlying goal on every single shot: eliminate as much distance between you and the hole as is SAFELY possible. This hole is an easy decision: the second fairway is tiny and surrounded by horrible hazards and bunkers. The end of the first fairway is wide open and very easy to hit. Very simple decision: put it as far down there as you can on the first fairway. What “safely” means is the key decision point.
You make golf seem like it’s so easy. Maybe I’m playing too much ego golf. I just started golfing 9 months ago and averaging 93 scores according to 18 birdies. I’m gonna try your strategic approach to golf tomorrow and hopefully I can beat my personal best of 88. My goal is to score 79 before my one year anniversary of beginning golf in late August of 2023. My putting stroke needs to most help. Any tips on putting strokes and how to get aligned so I can stop 3 putting on 10 out of 18 holes per round?
Practice rolling a ball by hand to learn speed and break. With putter, just imagine that same roll with your trail hand. Your brain is very good at distances if you spend 80% of your time looking at the hole... especially during practice strokes. You clearly have good hand eye coordination to be doing so well your first year. Good luck taming the flat stick!
Thanks Matt! Since discovering the playa way, I have been using this… yes you get stick for taking out a 5/6/7i on the p4/5, but on shot 2/3 from the fairway, those same driver okes are still searching for their bombs… Btw…What happened to last nights new course video?
Best advice ever, the “easiest” hole at my course is a par 4 that’s 270m. IMO it’s one of the hardest as it’s up a large steep hill with bunkers all round it and about 50m short of the green. I actually hit a 5 iron from the tee usually to leave me a decent distance into the green
Some good tips to help my confidentiality, but my usual problem is getting a good clean strike on the ball every time. Any tips on that Matt the baus playa?
Really appreciate your strategy for gameplay, gives me a different mindset of how to play. I will be playing like this on the weekend . What course is this?
The hardest thing to do in golf is being disciplined enough to play the correct shots for ur game. I know for me to shoot my best score i have to play as if i am playing in a tournament. Smart course management goes a long way. Even when i was playing my best i rarely played at the pin.
No sir. That’s the majority of playas and I wanted to hit near the green. When it comes to golf I don’t need to manipulate ideas. I know mine work better than anyone else for handicap golfers. So there is no need to exaggerate
In a lot of his videos you’ll see the Playa In Chief try a shot he’s not so confidential in and sometimes he booms it right near the hole and sometimes he duffs it in the hazard, so I really do believe it’s authentic

Matt, As a high handicapper, I physically on a regular basis can’t hit as far as you can. Therefore on this strategy I can’t relate or execute your strategy. My driver averages 140 to 155 and then my other clubs are less yardage from there. I hit more woods to get distance than irons like you do. On many par 4s I can’t reach the green in 2. I'm required to play on the green tees in the men's league I joined a/k/a senior tees (I'm a senior) and I do hit further than my wife when I play with her and she plays the forward tees (ladies tees). So I am already playing as forward as I can.
