Everything about this game is perfect, from the gameplay, characters, voice actors, art, story, and especially the music. I only wish that subsequent titles stayed true to the OG title.
The first PS2 game I ever played was Ratchet and Clank 2, and I was 12 back then. The atmosphere captivated me so much. It truly was the most amazing gaming experience I had as a kid.
The contrast from the Qwark we have now, a dumb, brawny lighthearted character who sticks to Ratchet and Clank (and needs them) and the manipulative and crazed Qwark we see in the first two games is honest to god the weirdest character transition in this franchise.

Ratchet & Clank was never about an Orphaned Lombax and a time keepers son who’re mega super heroes. It was always about a pair of unlikely friends who’s naiveté connected them and lead to them becoming heroes in a corrupt galaxy. The reason the PS2 games (Mostly the first game and Deadlocked) work so well story wise is because of their differing personalities that keep each other in check. A basic example of this would be how Ratchet is able to sense when something is fishy while Clank keeps Ratchet’s morales in check. It’s kind of beautiful in a sense. Their friendship now is so boring. They just love each other with no real chemistry. They’re both nerds and do gooders and ehhh. It’s so boring. Old R&C just had character.
I like to consider all games from Ratchet and Clank to Deadlocked to be in separate universe from what happens in Future to Rift Apart. Ratchet being the chosen last of his race savior and Clank being a time god is absurd.
The first Ratchet did not allow anyone to mess with him (when they did he destroyed an entire planet almost alone). I don't understand how he allowed Qwark to steal the credit for his acts in the third part, that would have been a motive for murder him.
I hate that the new Ratchet and Clank (which is based off this game) makes ratchet out to be this "Galactic Ranger" and genuinely wanted to help from the beginning. Ratchet just wanted to fuck around with his ship but Clank drug him into the situation. Also, Drek doesn't sound NEARLY as evil in the new game, like he did in this version.
The new one was a little disappointing for a remake, felt like it was mostly an ad for the movie that also wasn't that great. I hope the new Ratchet and Clank for the PS5 can bring the series back
You know, I've always wondered how this series would've turned out if Mikey Kelley had stayed for the later entries as Ratchet. I've always preferred him over James Arnold Taylor.
I like James for the more mature character in the later games. Mikey Kelley has more teenage voice that I wouldn't expect to work with the dialogue in 2 or higher.
I miss this original Ratchet. A simple guy who loves tinkering and building things as well as hover boarding and that's all. He even sounded cooler here than in Locked n Loaded onward to the present. Also he wasn't a kiss ass back in this first one who wanted to prove himself to anyone. He did what he needed to because it was the right thing, not to show off to other people. Unlike in the modern iterations where he's trying to impress Quark or the ladies or whatever.
I forgot that they hate each other for a LOT of this game, like a good half of it. It's decent development and it works towards a great buddy-cop payoff, but I can understand why people don't really like the angry abrasive Ratchet, considering how likeable Clank is. One other thing I noticed is this game specifically cuts the music for all dialogue scenes; I feel like that was a deliberate choice to add to the dry cynical tone of the conversations and draw more focus to the voice acting and physical motions of the characters. Really good stuff, Insomniac definitely had some skilled character writers on the payroll back in the early 2000s.
My favorite joke in this game is how every time it cuts back to Chairman Drek's flagship, his title has become longer and more complicated, until at the end he's the Ultimate Supreme Executive Chairman Drek.

The reason this game will always outshine the newest PS4 installment, is the characters. The gameplay has improved quite a lot over time, but the story and characters in the original 2002 R&C just always outshines the PS4 remake. Not only is Drekk FAR more sinister and a threat in this one, but the cast (primarily Clank and Rachet) are far more dynamic and act as real characters, especially with these hand-animated cutscenes. The new ones are great and all, but side-by-side, you can see that the remake went full robot on how the character's faces, dialogue, and movement line up with what they're saying and how what's going on is making them feel. The remake shit all over it, and I was gravely disappointed. Looking back at these in-game cutscenes really stands well and the humor, dramatic facial expressions, and non-robotic voice acting is just peak here by comparison. Another thing that always blows me away when looking back is the genuine and authentic feeling relationship that we have b/w Rachet and Clank. At first, they're really keen in helping one another, but then as things get more heated, they begin to resent one another...but when things beyond their control happen, they both reconcile and decide to put their troubles behind the Galaxy's. Together, they overcome Quark's grand betrayal, and fight Drekk back from Rachet's homeworld, as well as the rest of the threatened Galaxy, thus molding brotherhood between our beloved stars. Really sad that Insomniac didn't spend as much time having REALLY good character dev and acting put into the characters as they put all their time into graphics and gameplay.
I've tried both Ratchet & Clank PS2, and Ratchet & Clank PS4. What can I say, there are no comparisons... Ratchet & Clank PS2 is 100 times more beautiful. Graphically for the times it was impressive, but then we want to talk about the differences? Ratchet & Clank PS2 had better humor, better storyline, Better Musics, better villain, better longevity and Ratchet had a much more "human" character. In the Reebot, all of these things get lost. The plot is taken from the film (which in my opinion is bullshit) distorting the perfect plot of the original game, the humor simply does not exist, or rather, it is made especially for children, The musics of the original game... My God if they are awesome, I love them so much, especially Metropolis and Novalis. PS4 music is not memorable on the same level and is quite forgettable. As villain then we have Nefarius, who yes is my favorite villain of the series, but here it seems out of place, the villain should be Drek, who here instead seems just a secondary idiot antagonist. The longevity of the original was absurd for the times, 9 -10 hours to finish the game was a lot for those times, while the PS4 version only lasts 5-6 hours, this is also due to the fact that in this version some planets have been removed, which is sad. Last thing, the character of ratchet in the PS2 version was fantastic, he was Arrogant, conceited, Rude and Wary, even though he was the hero, he was not always kind and with a smile on his face. In the PS4 version his character has completely turned upside down, here Ratchet is all too good and meek, never getting angry or rude, never, here he is sweet and kind as a kitten ... and I don't like much as a thing, I liked the character of Ratchet PS2, he had Grit, but in the reboot he didn't, his character is too good, without smudges, in a word "Flat". That said, I love both games and both deserve to be played, but for sure, the PS2 Version is superior in all respects (even in graphics, because let's remember that the PS2 version came out in 2002, and at that time, that graphics it was crazy).
the pro gamer Yeah good luck with that, it’s already confirmed that Sony are not doing pretty much any backward compatibility. Look, the games can’t run on the PS4, and they won’t be able to be played on the PS5 either.
the pro gamer Only “some” PS4 games will be playable on the PS5. PS1, 2 and 3 games won’t be playable at all unless it’s on a remaster made specifically for the PS5 or something. This isn’t Microsoft/Xbox mate, Sony don’t care about backwards compatibility
the pro gamer If we’re not counting PS Now which is how they do their “backwards compatibility”, it won’t be playable on the PS5. However if we’re talking about PS Now then it probably still won’t be on the PS5, for some reason none of the old PS2 Ratchet and Clanks are on PS4 or on PS Now, so I don’t think they’ll add them to PS Now anytime soon, but we’ll see.
Never understood Drek. If Veldin occupied the greatest orbit, couldn't he just move the planet a little further or away from the orbit? Instead of blowing it up
Because it was never a matter of orbit or any kind of shenanigans He wanted money and didn't care about anything but getting good publicity and inspiring terror on everyone who might have thought of going against him He was also an evil tyrant a he wanted everything for himself and if he didn't need it then he would destroy it so no one can have it Plus he knew it was ratchet's home planet so in a way he did it to smack him a lesson and lure him out towards him so he could kill him
In fairness I'm pretty sure you could make the argument that it'd cause Veldin to fall out of orbit if they did that anyway, and since Drek (like many bad leaders through history) rule with violence and posturing as strong to the rest of the galaxy, he'd look better to his people if he just blew it up anyway. Heavily armed, corporate backed warmongers love unnecessary death in the name of looking cool on the global stage.
Not sure if this comment will be seen, but does anyone else notice that Clank never apologizes to Ratchet for the events on Umbris? In fairness, Clank had no way of knowing that Qwark would double-cross them, but at the same time, Clank's carelessness still gets the duo into trouble.
God, I love how silly and cartoony the PS2 games were. I wish the recent games didn't try so hard for an "interactive Pixar movie" feel. Cuz, let's be perfectly honestly, movie-quality writing it is NOT.
People say how much they disliked Ratchet mean attitude but it's actually a good development, he starts nice and a bit insecure then he grows just to be dissapointed again and obviuosly pissed, then well he changes again, that's good it doesn't feel like he's a slave of the game's plot

The fact he can be excessive is exactly what makes Ratchet so memorable. His heart is in the right place, he just has a little trouble expressing it.

In the year of 2002 how the game series Ratchet & Clank started it all.
Ngl, if humans discovered alien races and space travel, they would do exactly what Chairman Drek is doing

53:09 I was surprised the he growls like that
This game really does have many emotional gut punches
Just like the series as a whole
Pretty impressive for a time where people still didn't care that much about 3D platformers' plots.
53:09 that growl
I love how expressive every character is.
I hope to play this on the PS5.
the pro gamer It’s not even on PS4 yet, what makes you think they’d have it on PS5?
the pro gamer Yeah good luck with that, it’s already confirmed that Sony are not doing pretty much any backward compatibility.
@TheBunBun54321 you can’t play a ps2 disk on an xbox
25:23 But...Why ?
@GalacticHypernova 😂😂😂
Clank most of the time just looks in aw
Amazing beginning of legend.
Just got this recommendation on my fed, and I love it
I miss the cool ratchet
Can you quickly conquer Qwark's killer cannonade of confounded contraptions?
Never understood Drek. If Veldin occupied the greatest orbit, couldn't he just move the planet a little further or away from the orbit? Instead of blowing it up
Because it was never a matter of orbit or any kind of shenanigans
He wanted money and didn't care about anything but getting good publicity and inspiring terror on everyone who might have thought of going against him
He was also an evil tyrant a he wanted everything for himself and if he didn't need it then he would destroy it so no one can have it
Plus he knew it was ratchet's home planet so in a way he did it to smack him a lesson and lure him out towards him so he could kill him
In fairness I'm pretty sure you could make the argument that it'd cause Veldin to fall out of orbit if they did that anyway, and since Drek (like many bad leaders through history) rule with violence and posturing as strong to the rest of the galaxy, he'd look better to his people if he just blew it up anyway. Heavily armed, corporate backed warmongers love unnecessary death in the name of looking cool on the global stage.
You know it's kinda cool to see how the Ratchet & Clank franchise evolved over the years.
24:54 Sounded like Ratchet broke something
Not sure if this comment will be seen, but does anyone else notice that Clank never apologizes to Ratchet for the events on Umbris? In fairness, Clank had no way of knowing that Qwark would double-cross them, but at the same time, Clank's carelessness still gets the duo into trouble.
43:35 Ratchet is about to attack Qwark
"Your Crafts-PERSON-ship is very impressive." What a surprisingly progressive aside. Completely missed in the years I've been playing this game.

God, I love how silly and cartoony the PS2 games were. I wish the recent games didn't try so hard for an "interactive Pixar movie" feel. Cuz, let's be perfectly honestly, movie-quality writing it is NOT.
Developers forgot or aren't allowed to have fun anymore
@@MarioDragon Perhaps. My money is on them thinking they're now too good for that kind of humor.
