Their contrasting personalities bounced off each other so well and it made it so much more believable when they did become friends after being at each other’s throats for most of the game.
To be frank, I prefer this, the original, Ratchet and Clank to the new one. I still think out of them all, this has the strongest story of all the games in the franchise (with a Crack in Time coming in at a close second place) . Unlike the remake there is a lot of admirable grit, conflict and fleshing out of the characters and environments here that make the universe they live in much bigger than in the recent retelling. The worlds and environments seem a lot harsher and more intimidating than the remake which seems a lot smaller, friendlier and seems designed to reach a younger more family-friendly audience. The original is much more enjoyably subversive in that it was essentially a PG "crash bandicoot" type of game but slipped in a lot of different elements such as weapons, battles, mild mature humor and even a little horror and gore. The newer games seem a lot more cartoonish and less subversive. I grew up on this game and was the first one I got on PS2 so perhaps that is my bias but I do think the original here seems to have a more impressive impact as being the one that launched the franchise in the first place.
+Muon Ray I guess I'll abstain from buying it, then. I was hoping for a perfect remastering, but I've heard nothing but negative reviews about the game and especially the movie.
+Don'tLetYourMemesBeSteelDreams The Game adaptation have a 86 rating score and 8.6 user score at metacritic, The same can't be said for the movie though.
+Muon Ray I'd say mechanically, the remake is an objective upgrade. However, it terms of content, it's pretty short, and missing some memorable weapons, weirdly. The story was butchered though. Ratchet and Clank exchange basically no meaningful dialogue, and their character is nonexistent. Ratchet is generic wide-eyed youngster with dreams of heroism. Clank is a toaster. Quark's redemption arc from Up Your Arsenal is awkwardly mashed into the story. Nefarious has no good lines and serves no purpose in the story. His relationship with Quark is never mentioned. His presence also fucks with continuity. And of course, the humor, while occasionally good, is just nowhere near as consistent as it is in prior games. The cynical and dry atmosphere is gone. It's all too kiddy. :/
The first cutscene with Drek shows just why I love the humor in this game. That's what the humor in the movie should've been like. But no, they had to pander to children along with the future series. Also, Drek was best voiced by this guy. The guy in the movie sounds LITERALLY nothing like him.
The future series was still pretty geared towards the original fans, with lines like "Hold down the fire button to charge, then let go to release a galactic can of whoop- ass"
Yeah the voice is definitely cooler. But aren't we going to complain about the appearance of Drek? In the first game, he's indeed a dwarf but he's a lot intimidating, evil, smart, intelligent and creepy at times. In the movie, he's just a fat ass idiot who gets fooled by a robot. Not to mention the eyes...
Unfortunately the PS2 games were the best. A crack In Time bought them back to their former glory, but now they seem to be going back down again. They used to have such a great story and epic levels.
+Ali Makaveli Crack in Time had fewer planets in favor of space exploration and moons. In my opinion I prefer Planetary exploration than space exploration but that's just me.
I think 1 was great, 2 made some improvements but made some errors, and 3 maintained most of the good things and got rid of much of the bad elements 2 brought in. Glad strafing stuck.
This game's control progression is very similar to that of the first 3 Mega Man games. The first game was slippery, the second was an improvement, and the third was totally perfected. I love how in UYA you can fluently jump while strafing.
Actually you can strafe while holding L1 or L2 while gliding with the thruster-pack above surface (fast click R1 two times). And after all that years of playing Ratchet & Clank 1 I just realised that yesterday lol
@@Prometheus7272 In this game, yes...but his true character development started in Going Commando since he was more heroic and easier to stand behind as a protagonist. As much as I love this classic, I don't think his personality in this game would've worked very well into the plot of the sequels that followed.
@@Prometheus7272 Agreed...I was pretty surprised when I heard him speak with a different voice for the first time in Going Commando. Come to find out both voice actors are friends in real life and both worked together on the TMNT 2007 film.
Actually sometimes that momemt creep me out good that is no jumpscare about Qwark with no eyes but still some Qwark looks desturbing with no eyes I will prefer ps2 than ps3.
I like the original Ratchet and Clank story run from the first game to the end of the future series. The character development is strong for both Ratchet and Clank and it help; seeing as Ratchet is canonly a teen in the first game so his snarkiness and sarcasm makes sense. He grows into a sensable hero over time, and same with Clank.
Even though the remake is fine with most of its gameplay, the story and characters were a thousand times better in the original. I actually liked Ratchet's cockiness and snarky side because it was different and interesting to watch opposed to the generic hero personality he had in the remake. It made sense for Ratchet to start out as a jerk because it set out a path for him becoming a better person. In the end, he became a hero and his adventures continued. He eventually matured and developed throughout the first four games. The aggressive side showed that Ratchet had noticeable flaws which I liked seeing. While Clank was generally knowledgeable, this game also showed that he had a naive side when mistaking a dummy for the real Qwark. I felt that Clank hardly contributed much in the remake. Ratchet and Clank sniping at each other and arguing in the original game created tension. I like the fact that they don't start off immediately as friends compared to the remake. The arguments made them clash and roast each other which created an uneasy atmosphere. They even got the kick of teasing each other when any of them fucked up on certain situations. There was also competitiveness when the woman found Clank cute and it made Ratchet angry. Stuff like that was funny. Until the situation with Drek got dire is when Ratchet decided to take things seriously and drop his pettiness. I also loved the scratchy voice for him because it really brought out the personality and it's a shame they got shot of that voice after this game. Qwark was self absorbed due to the fame he had and his attempt to kill Ratchet and Clank showed he would go to desperate lengths to keep his fame status stable. His redemption wouldn't start until the following games. Drek was a much more menacing villain in this game and his voice was perfect. The voice in the remake sounds nothing like Drek. The humor in this game was also clever. Back when they weren't afraid to be more risky and fun with their humor. Now it's just dumbed down which is pitiful. The soundtrack was also much better in the original. The music is seriously lacking in the remake. The remake may look great visually but it doesn’t have the charm or heart of the original. I hate how they made Ratchet look more fluffy and cute with his design. He had more edge in the original. Ratchet and Clank hardly interact in the remake compared to this one. When it comes to story, soundtrack and atmosphere and even some of the weaponised gameplay, the original triumphs easily and is far superior.
Okay. LOVE the analysis, yo. But with one question. You said Qwark got redemption in later games. But when was that? I mean, he was the villain of 2, and a coward in 3 (his Aquatos and Tyhrranosis plans? Although maybe his involvement in the finale, counters that?)
Matticus Madness his redemption is less of becoming a good person and more him realizing that siding with evil tyrants isn’t a good idea gfjfhjd he’s still a selfish idiot, but his redemption comes in the form of it turning from an antagonistic version of selfish idiot to a protagonist version (sort of). At the very least he stops trying to kill Ratchet and Clank all the time once they kick his ass enough times LOL
@@samuraisharkie Given what he was trying to do with Tachyon in TOD, and his plan (if you could call it that) in Crack in Time, I guess you're making sense. Well played.
25:30 I‘m genuinely sad for Clank. Alerting Qwark of Drek was his only goal and after such a lengthy journey he just gets led into a trap. It‘s not top-tier writing but this is one of those times were Clank - a robot - shows real emotion :(
I love how ratchet wants to do what the player wants to do and clank wants to do what the player needs to do. It’s like when you play a Bethesda game and waste all your time with side missions instead of the main story that is urgent and needs to be done.
Man, the tone and characterization in this game was so much better than the remake. Ratchet didn't start out as a hero. This is supposed to be about how he starts as a selfish dick and is set on the path to be a better person. Clank's supposed to be logically intelligent but wide-eyed and naive. Quark is self-obsessed and all about living as a celebrity, he knows exactly what he's doing, he doesn't bungle into helping a villain. That's why his redemption doesn't come until two games later.
@Mythical Gnome I love how you're all over this comment section trying to police the opinions of others. "NO NO NO. STOP LIKING THE ORIGINAL!!! YOU'RE ONLY SUPPOSED TO LIKE THE REMAKE!!!!! REEEE FANBOY NOSTALGIA BLINDED!!!!!" What a goddamn idiot you are. Fuck off and let people like whatever they want to like, man.
agree, In the remake/movie, Ratchet and clank became best friend just after they just meet, Drek turned to overly comedic villain, And Ratchet became a hero wannabe(I love ratchet as a " that asshole who became unselfish and mature in the later games by the POWER of FRIENDSHIP!!!(Sound cringe worthy I know)
I think the goal for the movie was to portray Drek as more of a weaselly business man and more of a stooge so Dr. Nefarious could be the main villain. I did like both portrayals for different reasons. Paul Giamatti was good. Kevin Michael Richardson was great.
WarriorofMetal1993 I do not like the weasley businessman-like persona of badguys. I want to like my supervillians, even if they are evil. Villains who you want to punch in the face are not very fun to watch.
Collins Ongaya I would not say he is weasley in this. Put it like this: he is not a fat worthless sissy in this game unlike the movie. In this, he is cunning, smart, and dark. Having a high voice and being a fat, uncharming pig is not the makings of a good villain.
I know right. The guy that played Drek in the PS4 and movie is the guy from the John Adams tv mini-series. I used to watch those in my history class in middle school
@@SheyOfTheFae then why don't they switch them around with Drek being the main villain and Nefarious being the placeholder? That'd fit way better with their characters

0:01. an icon was born. this game series has had a dear place in my heart since i was at least 2 back in '05 when my older brother introduced me to these amazing games. still play them to this day.
I Liked Drek as a villain in this game so muh more than the reboot. He was menacing despite being comically small. Very memorable. Also it's strange how they don't ever mention the planet names in this.
That's the thing I never understood. Even when I was a kid Drek seemed meh and not in the least bit menacing. He was definitely not "very memorable", just lame. In the reboot, he outright sucks.
They also mention Hoven + the help desk lady mentioning some planets telling you to go there to find the missing gadget when you're stuck (I remember her mentioning Aridia and Kerwan). In Going Commando too, the only planet being mentionned was Boldan (and it was twice)
I actually liked Mikey Kelly as the voice of Ratchet, and James Arnold Taylor was also very good, I can see why he has continued as the voice from the second game onward, and Kevin Micahel Richardosn as Drek, Fred Ward as Quark, and David Kaye as Clank were great as well.
Clank: At least I'm not a coward. Ratchet: Pfft. Whatever. As soon as I find Qwark, I'm selling you for scrap. I could not believe Ratchet said that and when I first heard that line, I said to myself, "He wouldn't dare".
Such a nostalgia trip. I miss the classic Ratchet and Clank, and the days of the PS2. I remember playing without a memory card, memorizing every cutscene.
i honestly really love ratchet's first voice actor compared to the guy they got for the second game onwards. it makes sense that they'd get the new guy to reflect ratchet's maturity after his character arc in the first game, but the old guy seemed to bring a hell of a lot more character in his line delivery.
8:18 The writing in the R&C PS2 games was fucking golden, I would've never understood this as a child, but looking back on the cutscenes like this one make me LOL. But unfortunately the writing in the newer installments isn't as witty, but it can still be funny. I just hope the Ratchet and Clank Reboot for the PS4 will have great writing like the originals
I fucking love the original Ratchet voice actor. He's got that perfect edge to him with a small skater undertone that made it perfect for the kind of skate-minigame-including title the first game was.
This game definitely it fit his personality. The James Arnold Taylor fits the other games because his, personality was more, light hearted and nice. And both voice actors were in tmnt 2007 as Mikey and Leonardo
Yeah he was doing ratchet for so long nobody can really replace him at this point. By the way are you going to see ratchet and clank the movie when it comes out this year?
I'm totally seeing it. I was first skeptical of why he's wearing his tools of destruction outfit but I guess it works. And yeah I love skidd he's my favorite cause he's so funny! And it's possible they might not use certain characters so I don't know how they'll go for this. The plot is like ratchet wants to be a galactic ranger like qwark and I guess he won't be as a douche to clank as he was in the game. But they know what they're doing. Insomniac who made ratchet is doing this movie and we get the original voice actors so I have hope
Inside references -- for instance, ratchet has been voiced by two voice actors, both of which played ninja turtles in the 2007 CGI TMNT film (Mikey played.. Uh, michaelangelo, and James Arnold Taylor played Leonardo). I don't get Simone's reference -- I guess I haven't spent enough time on the internet.
I'm not calling James Arnold Taylor a bad voice actor as I thought he was fine as Ratchet. But holy shit the original VA was so so much more appealing.
Didn't realize how much I missed the floppier ears. They match his laid back personality and the movements add a lot more to his expressions than the rigid doritos he has now.
@@musahaque2000 Admittedly, the majority of the time he is a jerk. Especially in the first game. But as the series went on, he has his moments. And I do mean he's a dork in an endearing way. I actually like when stories have a jerk Protagonist. They always came off as fun, and they do grow to be good people later on. Just starting them off fully good just doesn’t leave much to grow from.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who loved that Ratchet was a rude asshole in the first game and also his original voice. No malice towards James Arnold Taylor, he's a great voice actor and I enjoy his voice for a nicer, not rude Ratchet, but I adore Mikey Kelley's voice for "selfish" Ratchet
Just the fact that these graphics look serviceable even by today’s standards is a true testament not only to the technological capabilities of the ps2 but insomniacs devotion to great leaves design and even better gameplay and graphics.
Honestly such an underrated story, and I'm really unsure why Insomniac seem to disregard its quality when talking about it. A mascot with a buddy isn't new, but Banjo and Kazooie, Donkey and Diddy Kong, Mario and Yoshi, and many others didn't actually speak to each other. Only Daxter spoke in the first Jak game. Ratchet and Clank really feel like separate entities here and I respect how this game commits fully to the two overcoming their differences. It doesn't feel forced, and if anything, it's quite bold to have the two main characters flat out hate each other for a third of the game. Really solid stuff. The gameplay may not hold up as well as the others, but I find myself coming back to this first game's story more than any other title in the series.
I got halfway thru the remake before just giving up and going back to the original trilogy, which I haven't played in years. The ps4 one is fucking soulless and panders to dumb little kids. These games weren't afraid to be gritty, edgy and completely fucking hilarious. Even my mum thought this game was funny, she used to help me find the bolts and earn the skillpoints. They don't make em like this anymore 😞

So many great moments. One touch that caught me off guard as a kid where Clank says his first words at 2:12. Up until that point the game acts like it will have silent characters all the way through. Great voice acting, lovable characters, and I really like the character archs that Ratchet & Clank have. Their bond slowly grows the longer you progress through the story.
My dude Kevin Michael Rudolph was all over this game. He did the voice over for Drek , Quark's Body guard, and the goofy sounding commercial announcer. Good times playing this game.

Smart comment mate you're just telling the truth with that mate
+Don'tLetYourMemesBeSteelDreams The Game adaptation have a 86 rating score and 8.6 user score at metacritic, The same can't be said for the movie though.
The PS4 game has gotten great reviews while the film has gotten negative reviews.
Much prefer Drek in the original compared to the remake.

+SHAWKLAN 27 Yea I completely agree. He felt too comedic in the remake in my opinion.
+ArcticDuck same and i hate that stupid thing he is on most of the time

The first cutscene with Drek shows just why I love the humor in this game. That's what the humor in the movie should've been like. But no, they had to pander to children along with the future series. Also, Drek was best voiced by this guy. The guy in the movie sounds LITERALLY nothing like him.
"it's still on..? ....WELL TURN IT OFF YOU IDIOT!
The future series was still pretty geared towards the original fans, with lines like "Hold down the fire button to charge, then let go to release a galactic can of whoop- ass"
The movie and its accompanying game are the only ones geared toward a younger audience.
The Future Series definitely didn’t pander.
They used to have such a great story and epic levels.

.......I like this Ratchet voice better...

I agree with you. I also felt the first voice really suited Ratchet a lot better.
+RatchetSprite I personally think James Arnold Taylor does it a lot better
Aye, Thank god his german voice actor didn't change.
+Tim Sheppard he does lol. Absoute menace of a voice actor.
+Kai_Decadence XD, I just noticed Kratos sort of went in the opposite direction, Being a Hero in the first game and an Angry jerk in the next two
I realized how hard this game is without strafing.
Going Commando really made this game much faster-paced.

Jordan Boyd facts
I like the original Ratchet and Clank story run from the first game to the end of the future series. The character development is strong for both Ratchet and Clank and it help; seeing as Ratchet is canonly a teen in the first game so his snarkiness and sarcasm makes sense. He grows into a sensable hero over time, and same with Clank.
There was criticism about Rachet's attitude in this game, which is why they toned it down in other games,
Billy Barnett
True, his attitude was a little too much at times. So I'm happy that they made him nicer later on, but still kept his sass
This was my first PS2 game as a kid

"Fluffy and cute" I personally think he was much cuter in the original.

I‘m genuinely sad for Clank. Alerting Qwark of Drek was his only goal and after such a lengthy journey he just gets led into a trap. It‘s not top-tier writing but this is one of those times were Clank - a robot - shows real emotion :(

@MegaChickenfish
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Classic Insomniac Games with the callbacks.
You definitely overstate just how good the original is. It's not that great. The cutscenes on this page are actually pretty terrible to be honest.

Why did they change Drek's voice? this is way better then the movie one!

Also it's strange how they don't ever mention the planet names in this.
That's the thing I never understood. Even when I was a kid Drek seemed meh and not in the least bit menacing. He was definitely not "very memorable", just lame. In the reboot, he outright sucks.
Captainoob They mention Rilgar
Captainoob And Pokitaru
They also mention Hoven + the help desk lady mentioning some planets telling you to go there to find the missing gadget when you're stuck (I remember her mentioning Aridia and Kerwan). In Going Commando too, the only planet being mentionned was Boldan (and it was twice)

i honestly really love ratchet's first voice actor compared to the guy they got for the second game onwards. it makes sense that they'd get the new guy to reflect ratchet's maturity after his character arc in the first game, but the old guy seemed to bring a hell of a lot more character in his line delivery.

The plot is like ratchet wants to be a galactic ranger like qwark and I guess he won't be as a douche to clank as he was in the game. But they know what they're doing.
