Ren said on his Twitch stream back in December that one of his dreams is to have his own Netflix series of stories. I wish some producer would back idea. Ren loves to bring his songs and stories 'full circle'. There are many songs, including these three where he will say a word or phrase at both the beginning and end of a song or melody. He does it in all three of these and even brings the whole story full circle with the relationships.
The big push has been my all time favorite band for the past year and man its been 20 yrs since I have heard a band that move me genuinely from laughing to tears and everywhere in between.. their Guitarist is seriously on my top 5 guitarist to walk this planet.. as a guitarist and to fully understand what that guy does "the way he does it" I'm telling you Romain Axisia is on my top five ever!
Have you ever seen the live stream with ren and the younger girl freestyling just them two on guitar and singing and beat boxing and etc.. I can't remember her name but its so raw and honestly pure and its gotta be my most favorite live performance possibly ever.... its just so on the fly, un planned and the way they just flow with it is unreal man... I just can't remember her name.. she is much younger but watching them just freestyle these jams on the fly was absolutely incredible... prob some of the harder to find stuff thats been posted but soooooo worth hunting it down.. the young girl isn't exactly hendrix but she is doing her own thing her own way and that girl is promised to sooner or later to break thru like the big push has. She is just so unique and her time is coming to chang the game again... they have this awesome small network of friends and every one of them are so beyond amazing... If you know her name you should mention her, if not keep digging cut you really should see them jam.. it's insane,
Everyone who reacts is jumping on the Ren bandwagon but you and Elizabeth of The Charismatic voice and a couple of others give a reaction that is informative on a musical level, thanks.
You're the first reactor where I really feel like I owe you a like for each tale. I'm going to be coming back here to listen to all of your advice again. Awesome.
Done live Honestly.. has anyone ever touched so many people, genres, ages, races like ren has? Like seriously EVERYONE that hears him is hooked Ren deserves big things
This is a guy who utilise everything to tell his stories. Instruments, voice, video, coreography, mimics, facial expressions. You name it, and that's what's makes him a so captivating storyteller. It just pulls you in! I love it.
The first time I saw the trilogy, it was driving me nuts because it reminded me of a specific style of music and I couldn't put my finger on it for the longest time. Then I was listening to the guitar at the beginning of Screech's tale and realized it reminds me of a Mexican corrido from an old Western. From the epic sad and violent story, the lone guitar and even his walking through the entirety of the songs. I wonder if Ren likes corridos or if that's just a coincidence. Either way, it's absolutely enthralling.
I loved what you said about how Ren and his one takes just makes you think "practice, practice, practice". You hit the nail on the head. When you see a dude like Ren doing what he does and compare it to autotune artists or someone who only has great studio music, you realize there are so many levels to this game. He's so inspiring. It's like that meme. "How did you get so good at drawing?!"... "practice"... "how could I ever get that good?!"... "practice"... "it must be a gift from god!"... "it's just practice".
In lesser hands this attempt would be a mess, but his acting, narration, singing, storytelling and videography is such that it hangs together quite beautifully. The scene from where he stands from the bed to where Violet is beaten (and you hear seagulls in the background) is, possibly my favourite piece of anything, anywhere. It's magnificent. I'd love to see this on the stage as part of a series of songs as plays. So original and refreshing.
Not sure if you have seen it or not, but there is a live version of this trilogy in Brighton. It's pretty awesome. Also has a few words of wisdom from Ren at one point between songs. ✌️💙🏴
I'm about as musical as custard, so I love reactions from people with technical insight, and your enthusiasm and openness to the 'perfect imperfection' of these performances is illuminating in such an enjoyable way. Thank you for sharing some of your expertise with us. Knowing that Ren used your insights to hone his craft makes your reactions to him rather special.
I've been subbed to the charismatic voice for awhile, which brought me to your channel. I'm not a singer but I love learning about the intricacies of singing, you do a fantastic job of breaking it all down, its fun to watch and I love your examples of all the different techniques. I've subbed, look forward to more of your breakdowns.
I love how his pronunciations of 'London city, far from pretty' etc change at the end with the introduction of the doctor's character to the story. Brilliant work, Ren!
Yeah that was pretty damn cool. The start of Violets tale gave me chills. I keep trying to dismiss Ren but just cannot find anything to substantiate any sort of denial, I'm a fan now. Killer job Chris!!
This has resonance on so many levels. I am gobsmacked by his music, voice, writing, acting, instrumentality, acting-all of it true. But for me as wonderful as all those things are, it's the HONESTY and WISDOM that he brings to it that so far outshines all of the other talents, but also out paces other artists. Anyone who has studied psychology and especially the trauma of incest and violence, is the realization often that it also is often a generational thing, often passed down through families, sometimes for centuries. All of his trauma has met the perfect storm with his creativity, and he's fearless enough to speak it, sing it and embody it. That is more than something.
Brilliant react, Chris. Not heard anyone talking about his facial acrobatics affecting his speech pattern and tone up to now. That was really interesting and something I've seen on many other singers but never really fully understood the artistic license and importance thereof - even though I know I do it myself! Thank you! X
Excellent reaction. I can't believe that this is the first video of yours that I've ever watched. Needless to say, I now have to work my way through your older videos. Congrats on almost reaching 300k subscribers
Man when I found this channel I wasn't exactly out to learn and have been in pro audio well over 20 yrs now.. but the past 8 months I've done a ton of his courses and he gave me a chance as an adult to reproach everything in a new found frame of mind that has been the best thing to happen to me in all those yrs... Mr Chris the virus took everything. Then I began to learn I now have a bad heart. Thinking I had to now let go, I've been able to relearn to sing with my heart condition. I don't have anything left to even wake up for. No work, no income, literally alone with now not knowing if ill be here from one day to the next and under the circumstances of not even able to afford further treatment and I just wanna say thanks for all you invest into this. The past 8 months its genuinely all I've had to keep fighting for.. I know I rarely comment but if I could hug you and just say thank you and you never know how what you do will effect someone else or to what depths.. ill wake up if I'm lucky tomorrow and with not a damn thing else left to do so for, I'll spend my day in my studio with all the amazing things you've provided and in the end I'll atleast have spent my last days doing what I loved most in life.. for that no hug or thank you can ever do justice but I hope you read this... life is short and I've been so fortunate to have had everything I've lost and am no selfish man... if my last days here are never more than me spending them doing what I loved most in life.... I have you literally to thank for that.. with the compression on the heart from singing, I had accepted i had to let it all go.. but I used your courses and content and you for whatever its possibly worth, gave me the most incredible chance to not have to let go.... not yet anyway...
As far as i can tell, hes doing a 10.or 11 character play with just one man . Includes instrumentals too. Amazing. I go back and watch older videos occasionally. Love this one. Peace Chris
If you like that bouncy vibrato, wait until you hear his version of "I shot the Sheriff" with his band The Big Push. I really couldn’t recommend it more!
Chris your breakdowns are fantastic, this is the gold standard for reaction videos. Also, the Ren experience is something else. This guys is a phenomenal artist.
Thankyou, fantastic reaction, I love how to get Ren. And yes the vocal at the start of violets tale is so hauntingly beautiful, another reason to watch his face is because it's also telling the story, during the vocals looking around ,scared and questioning, not knowing where she is and how she got there, then when he sits up, narrating about the rhythmic beats and blood stained sheets looking at the bed at though he sees it there. He is a genius, totally in every aspect! 💗 He uses every part of his body, his voice, his guitar and his surrounding to pull everyone into the story.
So I already know Ren is absolutely incredible, with your reactions and breaking it down musically really makes me appreciate how good he really is and how hard all of what ren does is to do as perfectly as he does
Great video, Try 'Crutch' It was done 6 years ago when Ren almost had a break down before he got a proper diagnoses and didn't know what was happening to him. Heartbreaking, raw, visceral, amazing!
I absolutely love that you are dissecting his music this way, u are probably one of the few to actually catch his "body singing" as i call it, you can feel the music flowing through his entire being and i have said it before, this man was made to create. ❤️
The tales, and it's genius simplicity reminds me of the quote: “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
I both hoped and expected that you would not stop after the first two videos about Ren. Thank you so much again! I love the already mentioned cover of "English Man In New York" no less than the original, I must admit. Singing "Be yourself no matter what they say", he really means it.
I really hope you'll analyze his street performance with Sam Tompkins in which they perform a medley of Earned It/Man's World/Falling. Two fantastic voices, and both having so much fun with live performance!
Love your Breakdowns and Reactions Chris, when you do them, i play guitar but can't sing a note, I only discovered Ren a few weeks ago but have not found anything i don't like, his talent on Multiple Instruments and his Powerful Expressive Voice amazes me in some way on everything i watch, i once again recommend Ren X Chinchilla - How To Be Me (live) and be prepared to be amazed at both of their Vocal skills, made even more Powerful by the Songs back Story.
Violet is the first story she had twins. The twins got split up as children. Screech knifed down his sister unknowing who she was and that night the twins died just as they were born the same night. Truly dark story of twins born in violence and died in violence.
Seeing all different reactions to ren song showed me how everyone who’s into different things(voice, therapist, musician etc), they all pointed something at ren for doing something very amazing either his voice, storytelling, talent for instruments
I have loved your reactions. I love how you have approached Ren’s music. I wasn’t sure for certain songs how a vocal coach would approach them and I was very pleasantly surprised. I cannot wait to see if you do cover Ren X Chinchilla live version of How to Be Me. I have an idea of what it may be like from a vocal coaching perspective, but I may be very wrong and would love either take. It is a really heavy song with an ending that brings to light the meaning of the song and makes you re-think the lyrics throughout. Great reaction as always! Thank you!
Chris my friend I’m learning so much listening to you. I’m 55 years old and my teenage daughter got me onto REN absolutely love him now. I don’t alway like British 🇬🇧 rappers as 2Pac is my favourite but really into REN at the moment. Have you ever considered doing Dear Mamma by TuPac.. love the video my mate.
One of the crazier parts about Violet's tale is that he had to move through the various spaces in time with the song to achieve the acoustics he wanted for each part. Tossing that in during a live recording along with all the other things he's doing with his voice, his guitar playing, and his acting ability is insane.
His 'lucky hands' for location and one take videoshots are highly under apperciated. No Greenscreen, pseudo live imagery or 'boring' me in my Backyard stuff, but tons of preparation and overall vision of the product of music, story and video.
OMG I'm so glad I ran across your reaction! Your detailed examination of the meloncholy head/chest voice at the start of Violet's tale was perfect. Please, pretty pretty please, direct me to more of this. I have been searching for months for vocals on par with Ren's performance here.
This was so interesting, thank you! Such an insightful reaction. I'd love to hear you react to more of Ren's work! I'd be especially curious about your thoughts on some of Ren's live performances in the streets with his band The Big Push, or with Sam Tompkins - I think The Big Push with the mash-up Wade in the water / Nina simone / Trouble so hard would be a great performance to go to next!
The face observation reminds me of Joe Cocker. He didn't do his wild facial stuff on purpose or as an act, he did it because that's what the song wanted. He wasn't acting, he was led by the music, became the music. Like that, Ren's performances seem so effortless because they feel instinctual and raw. I know, as a sometimes director and often observer of directors, that that "natural" "pure" effect is created on purpose, but the genius is the audience doesn't see the plan. We see the fantastic execution and it seems like magic. Ren's a wizard as much as a musician. Great reaction, Chris. Thanks.
His use of those onsets is aided by the British dialect that says “ci-ee” almost hiding the t. That initial break makes it easier to extend it a couple more times.
I also find it fascinating how he goes from the glottal stop “t” in London City in the beginning to the aspirated t in the end. Subtle, but it makes it so more intense.
I'm not sure if you realised story wise but violet is jenny and screechs mother, meaning when screech tried to mug jenny and killed her he actually killed his own sister then was killed by cops on the next street, so they was born together and also died together. Great example of a broken family. LOVE your video!
Great review Chris. For something a bit lighter then have a look at the live recording of "The Big Push - Bongo Bong (Manu Chao cover)". I tend to listen to this after the deeper, heavier stuff as his smile at the start when counting lifts me back up... and they are all clearly enjoying themselves.
GREAT reaction! I was really looking forward to this and you did not disappoint! Glad his music is 'sticking' with you - looking forward to more breakdowns :)
Wow. I’ve never learned as much about singing as I did during your analysis. No other reactor pointed out the techniques Ren uses as clearly as you did. I’m 55, and can play the guitar, but could never sing. I definitely subscribed, and will likely try your course. Maybe I have hope. 😊
In three quarters of a century, you'd think I might have progressed past Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and a Tonette. Actually, I probably regressed. But you've opened a door to some kind of treasure room of vocal appreciation, at least... partly through your expertise and partly through your enthusiasm. Thanks, Chris.
You have to check out Ren performing in his band The Big Push - there's a great cover of I shot the Sheriff/road to Zion/ hip hop that shows a whole other side of Ren's vocals
I found a 10 min video that was full of clips acting as screech; how he treated his gf, how he was a jerk to Patrick, there were hints of abuse at home, & screech planning a home invasion to get the $$ to run away. It essentially gives the entire backstory of the character leading up to his meeting w Jenny. The fact that a video like that exists shows how much thought & care Ren puts into the characters. I see Screech’s tale in a diff light now. Ren truly transcends the medium of music in his storytelling- pieces like these are works of art ❤
Have been waiting for this one. Thought you might appreciate this song, have not seen any other reactor do it. Gives me almost Elvis vibes but with a bit of a modern spin. Simply beautiful while highlighting Ren's voice. The Big Push "Oh My Woman". ua-cam.com/video/bVvA7VOU0MI/v-deo.html
Your "Snow" section starting at 13:56 really reminded me of Fiddler on the Roof's 'If I Were a Rich Man', the way the singer really plays around like you describe (sorry, I'm neither a singer nor musician, so I can't verbally describe what you were doing).
I have learnt so much from this!! Thank you. Been singing with you throughout. I'd love to here what you think of the busking videos, both Ren and friends and the big push. Your final statement comes true there.
It was cool to see on the flip of a switch ren got you hooked and your analysis brain turned off and you just sat there enthralled for the rest of it - right when he knocks on the door in violets tale. Something about that tale is so captivating that we just can't help but get sucked in
Please listen to Ren's "Bongo Bong" and "English Man In New York", both cover songs, with this band mates The Big Push. His singing voice is mesmerizing and just divine to my ears for those two songs. Of course he was a little younger in those videos. But so much fun and upbeat. You will have a great time analysis those I'm sure. I think he is a baritone but with an amazing range.
I so agree with you about those two songs. It’s also nice to see Ren happy. I’d also suggest the non-big push version of It’s Alright videoed in Brighton.
I love your reactions! I just wanted to say, the way he sings 'where' (did he go) on Screech's tale always reminds me of Thenardier singing Master of the House in Les Miserables. It adds to the theatricals
Knox Hill called him a"modern day Shakespeareian bard". Could not have said it better ❣️❣️❣️
Ren calls his music "Bardcore"
Honestly the Nickname “The Bard” for him goes hard
Ren said on his Twitch stream back in December that one of his dreams is to have his own Netflix series of stories. I wish some producer would back idea. Ren loves to bring his songs and stories 'full circle'. There are many songs, including these three where he will say a word or phrase at both the beginning and end of a song or melody. He does it in all three of these and even brings the whole story full circle with the relationships.
Oh man I would love to see that!!!
I think he should do the trilogy on Broadway. Maybe throw in Hi Ren for the encore. Would you go?
“Why you lying to me, violet?” The face he makes in the camera is terrifying. So real.
He is a modern day Bard, a Minstrel of sorts. Ren calls himself Bardcore.
Check out Ren in his band - The Big Push “I shot the sheriff/road to Zion/hiphop”. It’s a great example of his singing voice versatility.
This is on my daily playlist, sometimes on repeat lol
Exactly this!
He’s right on!! ..This song IS amazing- you’ll love it‼️‼️🔥🔥🫶

Probably the best reaction I've seen. Awesome. Subscribed. 👍
Welcome aboard!
Love the creativity and simplicity brilliantly used to tell these stories.
I feel you, I have ulcerative colitis. In fairness, Ren has suffered so much more, but I relate to psychosis. I'm eager to hear what you think! ❤
OMG I'm so glad I ran across your reaction! Your detailed examination of the meloncholy head/chest voice at the start of Violet's tale was perfect. Please, pretty pretty please, direct me to more of this. I have been searching for months for vocals on par with Ren's performance here.
Great reaction. Wade in the water by the big push, really show cases Ren’s vocals.
Here we go
Love your reviews of Ren! Thanks Chris. I feel like you need to go back and just listen to this story again. It impacts massively!
this was a awesome reaction man!!!
This kid has so much talent he’s crushing the commons.
Kid? He's 33 😅
I found your reaction very insightful, thanks.
Thrilled with your analysis.
How did I miss that you did this one over a month ago?? Excellent, as always!
When we get to the end of Violets tale and I could see you wanted to stop but got captivated by the story was awesome
I love your reactions, thank you for doin them for us to enjoy =)
SO good. Thank you for this reaction. I love it when I learn something.
I can't wait till you see his busking band The Big Push.
May I suggest "I Shot The Sheriff"
Been waiting for this one! Here we go
Ren is a bard of epic proportions.
o my god that was insane so insane truly amazing how he draws you in than fkn crushes you just crazy
I have watched a *lot* of reactions, I haven't seen anyone as informative as you! You are a great teacher/instructor!
Great break down :) It would be awesome to see you interview Ren if possible! I would love to hear his own take on his singing process.
I agree!
Thank you
Violet's tale had a certain "Clockwork Orange " Vibe.
And we know he's a fan of Kubrick!
I have subscribed to so many new channels just by watching Ren reactions and I am so glad I found yours!!!
I hope that your next Ren analysis video will be "How to be me"
You have to check out Ren performing in his band The Big Push - there's a great cover of I shot the Sheriff/road to Zion/ hip hop that shows a whole other side of Ren's vocals
I love it! PRACTICE!
Very good mate. Excellent review.
hes just amazing...thank you....
16:01 ))) I really hope that REN's fandom is called "rendom".)))
I say RENaissance ❤️
Renegades
You should check out some of his other stuff, along with his busking , you'll hear the diversity of his voice, he is just brilliant 💕
@@TheDougManthe one with the street chalk? I absolutely love everything about that video!
@@margaretc5679 yes, that’s the one!
That whole intro to Violet's story is one of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of music I've ever heard. I knew you would dig into that.
Ren has perfect imperfections. Thats why I love one take vids
I love your reactions! I just wanted to say, the way he sings 'where' (did he go) on Screech's tale always reminds me of Thenardier singing Master of the House in Les Miserables. It adds to the theatricals
It reminds me of The Pogues.
The live audience busking type version of this trilogy is also so freaking cool.
