Let me just say that I really liked the other or what many of you described as the "wrong" performance of The Big Push, I Shot The Sheriff.
But after going through this one... I TOTALLY see why everyone shared what they shared in the comments :) SO...
I thought it'd be fun to do a comparison video. This is my first time hearing this version and I comment on, compare and contrast various attributes of Ren's performance here with the "wrong" version. It's fun to hear Ren and the band come at this song with so much flare in two very unique ways!
Now do War Pigs from the same day.
And direct continuing with Paint it Black 😁🔥🔥🔥
Manners?!?
Please❤
YESSSS
Ah, the Sabbath medley….. quite an abrupt answer, bro.
Ren plays guitar like Buddy Guy and BB King, sings BETTER than Marley (honestly, check the original), and plays the crowd like Freddie Mercury. We've never seen the like before, and we likely will never again. He's our genius!
je valide woww
I would fucking murder for a ticket to hear Ren play BB King.
Agree with you. 😀
"He plays the guitar like a vocalist" - can't think of a better way to put it, my friend. Kudos.
Can we take a moment and appreciate how the band was in lock step with Ren? That bass line was off the chain, the drummer was flawless and when ending the song brought the beat back. Those backing vocals were just enough.
And YES, REN WAS 👏
For the record, there's no 'wrong' Ren video. But let's just say some are more right than others! 😂 I love both performances (prefer this) and I enjoyed both your videos too, thank you for doing this, it's one of their best.
That's exactly what I said on the other one. With Ren, there is no "wrong" haha
I see what you did there. Hahahaha
Reasons why Chris is the GOAT youtube vocal teacher:
- listens to his audience requests
- isn't afraid to look silly doing weird noises
- keeps learning new tools for his already awesome singing
- looks like Chris Daughtry
Haha all good things :)?
@@chrisliepe the best
He also plays the bass like a vocalist...or at least like a guitarist!
I really hope you'll do a reaction to The Big Push's Wade In The Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard, because it's just wonderful.
Thank you for being willing to do both. Interesting that you've identified that his guitar sounds like a human voice: I often think Romain's voice sounds like a guitar.
Me cheering "Yes!" when I saw that look on your face that everyone gets at a certain point of this performance when they realize how much greater it is than the sum of its parts. Thanks Chris - I'm so glad you watched this. Please look into reacting to one of the guitarist Romain Axisa's songs. He has a voice that I just KNOW you would love to analyze because it's so cool and unique. Try 'Goodbye Good Days' or if you want a busking one, 'Georgia On My Mind' from his Covent Gardens performance. Warning - you may become obsessed.
I'd love to see this too.
Happy to see you did both, this is almost an upgraded version of the other. but I love the other one as well :)
Sorry, kills me when people say 'you watched the wrong one'...SMH. They are both wonderful.
The other one has really bad audio quality, that's the issue
The Big Push is just phenomenal. They have a way of seamlessly blending songs and genres and add to that … THESE GUYS!!! Any one of them can take lead- and they do switch it up- they are just so cohesive ! Of course they have gotten more attention since Ren has blown up since late last year but the people of Brighton know what gold they had on their streets. You just have to watch their video for “Dignity” to see what makes them so special . I love Ren and Romain and Gorran and Glenn and Ren again for taking me HERE!! M*A*G*I*C
With a little bit of luck we can make it through the night, what a banger in the clubs that was. The Big Push paying homage to it is awesome. Deserves some recognition.
If you know you know!
LOL the fans of music reactions (me included) are crazy about their reactions! I'm going to be honest. I don't even watch the reactions if I feel it is not the one I think it should be... Thank you for reacting to this one!
Hi Chris, yep there is an appreciable difference in the two performances. I guess it makes sense, I imagine lots of factors contribute to the overall "level" (for lack of a better word), of a performance, so its understandable that not every performance is identical. And that might only be intensified when performers are doing busking where the number of attendees might vary so much. That said, I don't think Ren and the guys "mailed-in" their performances often. Much love for your work.
Oh, one more thing: we Ren fans are relentless, aren't we? Thanks much.
We’re insufferable but well meaning
@@LeeannG Well put, Leeann! 🙂
one of the things I enjoy about this particular performance is (and you said it when you said "band leader") His absolute control of the whole thing...his ability, his passion and his instincts. The finest busking performance I have ever seen.
Thank you for still doing this one😊
Love these videos! I'm so much sure you'll like "Ren & Sam - Blind Eyed Ft. Angry Car Park Attendant". This clip taught me a lot about confidence 😅
Haha good call. To be fair, this one is slightly harder to find. But yes, this is one of my favorites!! ❤
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one saying you MUST analyse Ren + Sam Tomkins "Blind Eyed" (MC version). Near perfection vocal-vibe-groove work!!
You can tell music is this guys passion his whole body dances to it, I bet he's tapping his foot under that desk too while his whole body moves hahaha love it
I did feel bad you caught so much flack for the first one, but they were 🔥 this day! Every clip from this busking session is excellent.
That point about how rhythmic his intro of Romain’s solo is really hit home. It’s a bit more obvious, but I noticed the same thing in Violet’s Tale during the horrifying but incredibly well formulated beating section. If you follow the beat, you’ll see he never loses it through that whole part. He’s truly a master at keeping the beat.
I would venture to say that you use your *reaction* as an instrument also. In a sense you let the music play you, producing both useful technical pointers and sheer joy. Well done!
I highly recommend Prais You (Fatboyslim cover) and Swan Song from The Big Push. Crazy vocal harmonics and you hear all three sing in both tracks.
Praise You.
Swan Song is so unique and lovely!
I love how excitable you get during your analysis. Your passion for music shows through so much in every video you do .
Great reaction, love the way you can analyse and explain while simultaneously being totally immersed and loving the performance 👏👏👏👏👏
This was RED SUSPENDERS DAY and it was all a great set.
Imagine seeing this Live on a street corner- for Free! Now Imagine this in a huge stadium...
'cause that's where this mega-talent belongs. So versatile. Ren's star is on the rise!
Just one request, keep diving into Ren's catalog. Lots of amazing things are waiting for you! :)
So glad someone mentioned the Jeff Buckley influence. Jeff Buckley still to this day is my all time male vocalist/artist. The dude was just out of this world. RIP
Gotta take time to give props to this bassist tho. His bass lines are great, the tone of his bass is amazing as well. Love how he just fit -perfectly- in the overall sound of the medley they've done.
Love the reactions
The reason the audio is so clear and good on some of their street performances is because Ren records the mics and the instruments separately then mixes them later.
If you haven't done it yet, can you do The Big Push's cover of Paint It Black? I realize Ren isn't the lead vocal, but he goes nuts on the bass.
Regarding talking, using speech, during a song. In the 90's in Europe it was done a lot. F.ex. the artist Anouk from the Netherlands used it a lot. Also using a blend of different genres. And scatting (gibberish as you said) from jazz is also amazing if you can use it. Ren is using every influence he picked up in his life. And the UK has of course an amazing history with reggae and ska 😊❤. My 2 cents into the Cookie Jar ❤
He plays that guitar like he's making love to it ❤
What a fantastic reaction! I adored seeing the excitement. It's like watching the video myself for the first time. You brought back all the feels. Thank you 😊
Thank you for exploring the other version and giving us the vocal breakdown! Ren is so talented and diverse vocally! ❤
There is nothing that I love more than watching you and/or Elizabeth bouncing around with joy during a reaction. Thank you so much! ❤
Yes! Oh thank you, thank you for doing this version as well. I loved hearing your break-down of all the key elements that matched up with what I was hearing myself as well. You give such great insight towards SO much in your videos.
I particularly loved watching your excitement as this performance in particular exemplifies Ren's masterful abilities at fluid and unexpected rhythmic layers with his guitar, voice, and spoken words.
Yay! So happy you experienced this epic busking performance!
Im so delighted you revisited and checked this performance. Love your analysis, as always...
When I started to focus on rhythm, my singing got this drive and power that it didn't have before.
Thanks for covering this version too. It’s good, isn’t it?😎
YESSS
"Ready for you" by Ren would be perfect for a vocal analysis. One of his older songs, but showing his vocal control and his abilities in singing. A lot to discover for you in this song. ❤
I second this!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Glad to see you did this version too. I've been looking forward to it for awhile! Thanks!
The big push did a cover of war pigs. Same red suspenders that is just as awesome. Be another great one to watch!
I love all the emphasis on the “right one” lol
Back with the Ren train...This is my favorite... Saw the other one though... 🙄🥰 and hoped you would do this one... Thank you ♪♫♪ ♥
As far as influences go we Brits got heavily influenced by Reggae and Ska in the 80s. The real secret behind British music innovation is BBC Radio 1 (and latterly BBC Radio 2).
Until very recently we didn't have Radio Stations devoted to a musical style.
There's really wasn't an R&B, C&W, Rock ... radio stations. What we got was every type of pop/rock/Rap/Electronic music on the one station. That pre-loads every teenager with a huge amount of influences, and Ren encapsulates that (though to a lesser extent now we have streaming "radio").
He has music in his veins, body and soul 😮😊
Every busking performance is unique, not sure there are really any “wrong” ones 😁
That's what I said!!! :) haha...
@@chrisliepe there is at least one more version on the Brighton Beach busking BBB page on UA-cam
@@chrisliepe With again, a totally different vibe.
You can make no mistake by watching different performances of your favorite artists. Changing the perspective makes it easier to notice so many fine nuances. Having said that, now this one may be one of the greatest street performances ever, and I am so glad you watched and reacted to it!
So much fun to watch, i never get tired of it. Or of hearing your analyses - top notch!
I don't think you can go **wrong** with Ren. But you can most definitely go **very** right, like in this case 🔥
I have watched so many reactors do this one and you are the ONLY ONE who commented on the guitar skitter/chatter sound pulled out by Ren in the opening bit. I love that part so much too!
Yay! So glad you went back and grabbed this one! I loved watching your expressions as you "got it." It was fun to hear your thoughts on the differences. It's also fun to watch YOU have fun with something we love, too. Thank you for the great reaction and analysis! 🙂
Pressed play so damn quick…😂😂 Thank you
The crowd really loves them... how could they not... Ren is really adding life quality in Brighton, obviously they all know. They have got a real treasure there...
There is no wrong one with Ren, dude. Just all worth checking out, bc he always does some little thing differently. Yup he's one of those...
I know that’s what I said, but you’d be surprised to see how many commenters used the word “wrong” to describe the last video haha
@@chrisliepe Yup, I know, some other ppl also reacted first to the same one as you. I love that one also, and it is clear that his voice is a bit "cracked" then, as if he was a bit sick or had strained the vocal too much beforehand, but what he did with what he had at that moment - just amazing. Ofc, the whole gig with Ren in red suspenders is a whole different vibe, different day and different energy from the crowd, so their performance is also different. But still, doing the most with what is available at the moment - Ren and those boys are masters at. Just thought it should be pointed out.
There is also a cool vid of them playing My generation, where halfway through Ren has a cramp in his left hand, and still manages to play to the end (played base)... The guy is just something else when it comes to overcoming obstacles...
Excellent reaction Chris ("reaction" is understating what you do) the call and response with the guitar clarification was eye opening
The tone of his guitar work at the start is why I've watched this countless times, plus the sound recording for a street performance is exceptional
Love your analysis vids. There isn't a wrong Ren song, but thank you for doing this one too.
His musical ear is superb. Great reaction.
So glad you got to enjoy this version, it's truly remarkable - thanks for sharing it with us!
pur génie ce Garçon REN 😮😮😮😮🙏👏👍MERCI
One of my favorite Heroes, two in a raw :) ua-cam.com/video/ATRsYfiVUy8/v-deo.html DARYL HALL and CEELO GEEN doing live the immortal 'I can't go for that'. Funkyssimo. I will enjoy your comments, Yves from France..
So glad you decided to check out this version, and that you so clearly enjoyed it.
Hahaha glad you came back to do the “right” one
You mentioned the bit where he’s talking and introducing the band and how rhythmic it is very much reminds me of James Brown.
He had that control within his music and songs to sing, riff, talk, the rhythmic gibberish you talk about and certainly interact, conduct and introduce his band seamlessly and effortlessly.
I don’t know if you have but I would love to see you do a video on the Godfather of Soul ❤
I feel like many people present for that show is going to look back at it in 40 years and go, oh yeah, that was the best day of my life. I certainly think Roman is going to think that, he seem very happy :)
Check the War Pigs mash up too, recorded the same day, think it was the next song they did.
I think you'd really enjoy the Big Push version of Wade In The Water/Trouble so Hard/Nina Simone. It's a really impressive vocal performance 👍
Imagine stumbling on these guys busking. I'd love to see them live.
Humility power 300%. You are a very very very good person.
Great video. Ren and the band were even more amazing on this performance. However I also enjoyed the other one too.
This is proof - Practice Makes Progress!
Ahhh ... you didn't do the wrong video. It's your channel. I mean, this one sounds far better imho, but you could've checked it out in your own time. Well anyway, thank you for both reactions. Much appreciated!
This shows off the bands talents and chemistry
Well done Chris - you listened to us😁. Always enjoy your reactions ❤️
It's just an incredible performance. Would have been a hit on a big, ticketed festival stage with everyone going away thinking they had seen something amazing, yet they were just doing it free on a street corner hoping to flog a few CDs for £10.
That was really cool, and it was just behind my house 😄
Both versions are great but I just feel like their having more fun in this one. The big smiles the eye contact between the guys, all just fun. I don't know if it was this performance (don't think so) but Ren had posted they'd be playing, were late, when they got there the police were already on crowd control with over a thousand people waiting. When that happens these amazing street performances become problematic and end up stopping. Shame but understandable. Ren (with his health) never knew if he was going to have a good day or bad so it was hard to book venues because he never knew if he could perform. So glad he's getting more medical assistance so maybe there'll be a place to watch him live once again.
Yes! I listen to this daily, just looove it. Thank you for covering it!!
So fun to enjoy experiencing such a great show via youtube!
Chris you ABSOLUTELY have to do Romain Axisa’s Goodbye Good Days.
No analysis of Ren is a mistake! Still - this is so awesome!!
Ren and chinchilla one dance/ drunk in love is so good too! Glad you checked this version out though 😊
That's my home city of Brighton. And I'm in the crowd somewhere 😊
"Wrong" especially when it comes to Ren/The Big Push isn't really a term you can use. Just different. But yeah, all the busking videos are great. The Big Push doing War Pigs is an incedible verison that ends up being a bit of a medley (it's also a direct continuation of this exact busking session) and thieir Paint it Black cover is great too. You should really check out Ren and Sam Tompkins busking together, you'd quite like that as well.
Apart from the songs that the title mentions there is also a section from the song "A Little Bit Of Luck" from "DJ Luck & MC Neat". So basically 4 songs wrapped into one.
Now try their next song from this same performance. Black Sabbath's "War Pigs". Another 3 song mashup. Brilliant.
You’re a great teacher, but what makes you phenomenal is that you continue to learn every day and bring that education to the people who follow you through your scope and that is why you are the goat
Glad you came back to this 👌
😂 Hilarious start, Chris! Glad you didn’t take it personally. I liked your other review as well. Awesome review and insight, as usual! This is one of my favorites of his. Mind blowing the depth of talent and stage presence. Really looking forward to him getting out and doing more live stuff in front of crowds. Just brings out a whole other side of him! And the big push rocks. Thanks!
Chris, if you see this: I don't know what the context would be, but as someone who is uneducated in music I'd love to hear you speculate on the following:
We know that Ren was signed very young with a subsidiary of Sony, but that he and the label decided to end their formal relationship when Ren got really sick back then. Do you think Ren would be the same performer he is now, had he not gotten so sick when he was young, and had a record label directing his career?
I'm speculating that he wouldn't have had as much time (independently) to spend on developing his own talents has he has obviously done. With record releases mandated by a contract, plus I imagine record labels are much more inclined to pigeon-hole artists and limit the amount of experimentation that they do. Thanks.
100% agree with this observation. And I just can't see him having the same kind of success, reaching as many people, without doing his music his way. I don't think any label would have taken a chance on releasing Hi Ren, which is, undoubtedly, the key song that helped him reach such a diverse fanbase and expand his massive following. Chronic illness really changes a person - what they value and how they see the world. I'm sure before he got sick he was probably an awesome dude, but I don't know that he would have become so relatable to millions of fans of all ages and walks of life.
Watch this one at least once a day! It's fabulous!
Lol, "pushing" you on The Big Push, I see u 😂😂😂 Great reaction and I always learn from u, thanks!
Love your breakdowns Chris. You’re so free, it’s very contagious ❤
Thats so funny, The Right one. I didnt know about the other one until you said it. Just looked through your videos and seen it with him and his white bliond hair.. Ya this one is much better.
Thank you, man, for listening to us and doing this one too! I wouldn't say you made a big mistake listening to that one. As I said, that gave you the opportunity to compare these versions and that's cool too 😃
