I've spent way too much money on comic books since getting back into them 5 years ago, so this video is definitely helpful in helping me move toward a self-sustaining approach to the hobby.
Pretty proud of myself. I preordered a first appearance guaranteed 9.8 for really cheap, recently flipped it for funds for a local con. I still own few raw copies of that first appearance. But with the money I made off the slab, I bought another 3-4 first appearances of books that are trending up! I'm learning from watching you and few other UA-cam channels!
The first thing I'm doing is separating comics I buy for personal and those for flip/spec and you're exactly right: you have to separate your business mind from your fan mind or you'll go for what you want and not sell anything.
Hey fellow Bryan - just wanted to add one way I've been flipping: Buying rough Raw, doing CPR and selling raw. E.g. Getting some TLC to some of the diamonds in the rough and flipping them without having to sub them. It's what helped me kickstart funding the hobby again.
These videos are so helpful for guys like me looking to have the hobby fund itself. Saw that video of the allowable defects which was great! Thanks for these videos!
I’m reluctant to submit to CGC due to the long turnaround times- a book could no longer be hot by the time I get it back. I like the idea of buying books that have already been graded and flipping them.
That's my issue aswell, I've not done a submission yet but im getting together 25 I think will do well that I no longer want. Oh, and if they come back low, I dont want to loose money lol
I agree, I only send in golden age books to CGC these days. Older detective comics, Pre code horror never drops in value. But would never send in modern spec books, turnaround time is way too long and value drops.
I got my first 3 graded comics back from EGS yesterday. All 3 were signed and came back 9.8s. With their pressing and cleaning and choice modern grading, it took 2 months from mailing them down to them being returned.
What a great video, I don't see myself cracking open any slabs just for the risk involved but I do very much like the first three methods of flipping comics. I feel like there are always comics out there that are undervalued that you can either by raw or already slabbed that can be had for low prices especially before one of the streaming networks secures the rights to the stories and then you see the price spikes.
I do Raw to Raw or Raw to Graded for my sales. My problem is letting go of the books! Always feel if I wait a little longer, it might go for more, or its a book I like and wanna hold onto, but the ROI is just too high not to take advantage of it.
Learning to clean and press over the pandemic has been a great decision. Being able to CPR a book yourself has helped so much. Just another part of the hobby to love
Thanks for sharing Bry -- didn't realize you had been in the game for so long! As I've heard from many -- learn how to grade! I got my Overstreet guide just a few weeks ago and so I'm just starting to dip my foot into some of these methods. If you can clean and press on your own though, that's where the greatest ROI is!
That was gold, Bry. Reminds me of myself. I love this hobby. We are so fortunate to do what we love, every day all day. I just discovered your channel this weekend, and now Im interested in buying some books off your website. Real recognizes real. I enjoy doing business with other lovers of the medium.
I like finding raw books and selling raw books or sending them in to get graded. I never put a grade on my raw ebay sales because no matter what I say someone is going to disagree with my grade so I just say see pictures and that is what you will receive. So post lots of pictures, this has cut down on my returns.
@@BrysComics have you every been asked to sell comics for someone like they wanted to make profit off their collection but didn’t know how to do it etc. I’m also in that situation as well right now they don’t want to sell them to me but they want to sell them and make profit off them lol it’s a weird situation. He is a cheap individual Unfortunately but is sitting on some huge books and is too lazy to sell them himself
@@justinedwards5790 yeah situations like that go nowhere…they’re just not ready to sell yet. If they sell them themselves they make the most but have to do the work, if they sell the whole collection to you they gotta take a hit, but you can’t have the best of both worlds lol
Good info! I started selling in the last year. I'm working my way up from buying and selling raws. I'll save up those funds to buy the books I want for the personal collection. Helped me get my TMNT 1 3rd print a couple of weeks ago.
@@BrysComics it's a mid grade raw copy, but I'm fine with that for now. I'm about 10 issues from finishing the 1st volume. Those have been my goals for the year.
Working on making the hobby pay for itself now. Got lucky and picked up a full set of Stray Dogs 1st print horror covers off the shelf and picked up a few copies of never never. Looking forward to MOM this week as well. Definitely a hustle and I'm about to start grading to set my values on fire!
Great video! I have been dabbling in the Raw sales, but it’s a lot of work like you mentioned, especially when working full time. I am about to get into slabs soon, so I appreciated the insight on that aspect.
I've only just started collecting books & I've went nuts buying limited run editions, unique cover art & character first appearance books in the hope that they may become valuable. Only time will tell if my efforts will pay off
Your initial recommendation to use funds from the "flips" to fund the growth are spot on. I've been doing that with coins for roughly 6 years now and what started as an initial $50 deposit in a separate account has grown to roughly $5k in asset wealth. I mean, I'm not getting rich on it or opening up a shop but it's a hobby and discipline to use those funds as if they're a business account. Without risking everyday funds or future savings, i.e. 401k & such. Spreadsheets come in handy when it comes to bigger purchases. I generally reserve it for coins I've bought raw and submitted to make sure I have the sales data. Not every sold item is the same profit margin but if you have the data you figure out what your targets should be and your risk appetite for certain items. Good luck on your journey and good luck on that storefront! Comic shop owner was always one of my "if you could do anything what would you do?" interview answers so I totally get it.
Havent submitted to CGC yet, but the owner of one of my LCS's is going to Florida to hand walk a 2nd print TMNT 1 and an AF 15 thorough grading, so I may send some books with him.
In regards to the CPR method, another thing to note would be to look up the grader notes for books before buying/cracking to see if they are pressable defects. I did this with an ebay listing for a 6.5 slab. The $5 for the notes was worth it as I was only paying $20 for the book haha. Cracked, cleaned, pressed and off to CGC. Looked at least a 9.4 but alas I still wait for the results...
i routinely submit to cgc but i need a presser ccs is killing me... good video.... just got my first appearances of thrawn back... cant wait to see him live action fingers crossed
This is useful stuff. Appreciate the knowledge. I love comic books, but I've only recently started to really learn more about how to invest in them (I've mostly only been doing sports cards in relation to thinking about making a profit, since I have more knowledge in that space).
CGC is the way to go for high end books I believe. Encapsulated and graded is the trend for sure and after I got over the fear of sending in to them, it has been a success.
Love these kinds of informative videos. I've always traded raw copies. Just now have finally submitted a stack to the CGC for grading, after paying a company to first clean and press them. Have another stack ready to go soon. Just wish it didn't take CGC so long to grade. I'm worried my books will no longer be hot by the time they come back to me.
Another awesome video of selling advice. Also…Thank you so much Bry for delivering my “Champions” #1 CGC 9.8 with perfect packing. You’re packing made a difference. USPS is vicious to mail but shipping using a medium priority mail box inside a large priority mail box is fantastic!

This is the best UA-cam video I’ve seen on selling…and it’s not even close. Thanks.
Awesome! And great last name!
I have switched to CBCS, I know the CGC books for the most part get more money but X-Men is hot in either company. Great video.
Just got into comics and have been trying to find a way for my hobby to fund itself!! Thank you for making videos like this!!
