I’m an Orlando local and currently studying this summer in Bremen, Germany. Sitting with strangers is the norm here, but since it is also the norm not to talk to the strangers sitting at your table, it isn’t awkward.
I like the sitting together with other families because I like getting to know people, ask where their from and what their plans are. You sometimes get some good suggestions for other places and learn about things you may not have known otherwise.
I can see a negative though of groups being put right next to each other on those tables that if someone in a group has a really bad food allergy to something obviously their group will be aware of it and help them with it by maybe staying away from that ingredient as well, but other groups aren't gonna be aware of the allergy so it seems nuts to have groups that close together when Disney are usually really good with helping people who have food allergies.
"All you can eat" comes across as a challenge and leads to people loading up more on their plates. "All you care to eat" comes across as an invitation to take what you want, not what you can. Apparently it has helped reduce waste and probably helps their bottom line as well.
John Zimmerman Why have I never thought of it that way? That makes sense. I assumed it was just a less pedestrian way for Disney to say "all you can eat", which I'm sure is true also, but , of course, they put more thought into it than that. Interesting.
The tables definitely remind me of our experiences at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. My husband isn't a huge fan of Biergarten, but the kids and I enjoy it. It's not the best German food I've ever eaten, but many of the traditional dishes had flavors close enough to my grandmother's German food to keep me happy. We last went around Christmas and it was really nice to see the place decorated for the holidays. They also added Silent Night to the entertainment...they sang the first verse in German and then had the patrons join in singing in English. The kids also think it's just a fun place to dine.
I am with Charles on this one. I like this restaurant and also like the food there. Last time I went they had a roasted pig and it was delish! Sitting with strangers doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I've always been lucky to share the table with some nice fun families. I get that not everybody likes that style but that is their style and there are other restaurant options if that is not your thing. For example, I avoid Whispering Canyon just because I am not interested in the "antics" but I don't expect them to change the whole concept because I am not into it.
As far as the long table thing I know they were trying to be reminiscent of biergartens in Germany, such as the Hofbrauhaus, but I do agree it's weird for them to seat strangers next to you when it's empty. The biergartens its trying to reflect typically allow people to seat themselves so the only time you sit with strangers is when there is nowhere else to sit
you forgot one bit point when you juxtaposed San Angel with the Biergarten. You can actually see what you're eating at Biergarten. San Angel warrants flashlights.
On our last extended family Christmas trip, we sat at a table in the front next to the water wheel. My kids absolutely LOVED it. They loved the immersive look of the restaurant, the music, the novelty of the water wheel, basically everything! The buffet had enough variety and quality items to keep everyone in the party happy. Overall, it was one of our best family meals during that trip.
The Disney dining show is my favorite on the dis!! Never stop doing thiss!! Binged watched all of them already and I don't even have a vacation planned yet but I will be prepared 😂
The communal seating when it is empty may be the "german" equivalent of the Teppan room at the Japanese restaurant--that they can put servers/staff concentrated in one place. But without the cooking-it-in-front-of-you thing it doesn't have the same sensible reason at all.
Pete, Steve and Charles are the PERFECT combo for a dining show. They all love food, but have very different taste and are able to clearly articulate their observations. That's what makes a great dining show. Don't change a thing.
I feel like we needed one of my fellow functioning alcoholics to be apart of this review (I’m looking at you Ryno and Craig). I know Charles and Pete don’t drink, but I feel it’s a disservice to Biergarten to not talk about the Liters of beer. Which is one of my favorite parts of this place.
Well I’m german and I can say it is not a german culture thing to sit with strangers at the same table 😂 I get your point , I would feel uncomfortable too .
Cheers for Ears what about the long tables at volksfest tents. Not sure what part of Germany you’re from, but several of the restaurants in and around Wurzburg had large tables to accommodate several small parties during busy times. Not something they used when it was slow but when they were packed it wasn’t unusual.
Daniel Curtin , those kind of festivals aren’t to often . Yes it can happen at the Octoberfest for example that you will sit with strangers at the same table , but usually these tables are made for larger groups of 10 - 12 . Most local people go out with friends and family, so they need bigger tables . But for sure in general it’s not usual to sit with strangers at the same table . And festivals like the October fest are full of tourist , so it really lost its roots , if you know what I mean 😊
Such a weird dichotomy of y'all wanting the experience to be immersive, yet putting your own restrictions on what you want the level of immersion to be ie. the communal tables that are representative of "true" German Oktoberfest.
My family are German and I have been to many restaurants and festivals in Germany. We have never been forced to sit with people we don't know at either of them. I think it's valid for them to criticize that.
Sure, which is why I put real in quotations. If you do a Google Image search of Oktoberfest, the majority of the pictures are of people at large communal tables. Thus, if people are looking for a true Oktoberfest experience, then they might be looking for the communal tables. Is it true of every German restaurant? No. I've been to Germany and didn't eat at a style like that. However, when that's the popular depiction of a German Oktoberfest, then I would expect it to be included.
Russell Sanford I’ve been to Oktoberfest along with several other fests, every beer tent has those long tables, but they also don’t have assigned seating, you just sit where you can find a seat. That being said it’s not a real Oktoberfest experience unless someone is passed out in the grass choking on beer barf, and a woman is pissing in a storm drain.
One of my absolute best Disney memories was during the Christmas season and watching my parents Polka dance at the Biergarten. They so much loved dancing with each other that if a band was playing then they were dancing!!! I just sat and watched them and my very young children dance and play from our table. So much joy was priceless to watch. It was shortly before my Dad passed away and the only trip over many years that we were able to get them to accompany us to Disney World. My Dad was more of a Vegas kind of guy. It’s a wonderful memory that my wife and I will never forget. Now...Is it good German food? Yes. Is it the best German food? No but the atmosphere, service and entertainment more than make up for it. When we went with my folks it was on a Candlelight Processional Dining package. My parents really enjoyed both the Biergarten experience and the Processional. It was the highlight of the trip for them and us. Since then, whenever we’re at WDW during the holiday season, our family tradition is to eat dinner at the Biergarten then attend the Candlelight Processional. Every time. Without failure. We’ve created many more memories there. Dancing and watching my kids dance. The many times we watched both our daughter and son help them light the Christmas tree. All great memories. We’re currently planning our grandson’s first trip to WDW this next Christmas season and are discussing our Candlelight Processional Celebrity preferences. We already know the restaurant of course. Thanks for sharing.
Totally agree about the seating. It was somewhat awkward here more than any other sit down place! However we loved the food! My husband is of Austrian descent and we really did like the food. We will definitely go back next trip!
OK, I watch all your reviews and videos and I have to say something about this one. I'm not trolling but this review isn't pinpointing why this place is so much fun and it absolutely has nothing to do with the food. The place is called The BIERGARTEN!!!!!!!!!. You go here to drink beer out of giant beer Steins, sing and dance and enjoy the atmosphere. The food is there to complement the beer. None of you also mentioned the schnitzel or the spaetzle. How do you not review the Steins of beer at the Biergarten? I've gone here several times and some people just come here to just drink beer and watch the entertainment and not eat the food. You are supposed to drink beer at the Biergarten, and sing and dance. 1. How many places can you drink Steins of beer at disney? 2. How many places can you drink Beer from Germany on Tap at disney? 3. How many places can you Dance with your kids, wife, husband etc at disney? 4. How many places at disney can you watch great performances of german music, inside where the air conditioning is? 5. Where else can you get Schnitzel, Spaetzle, and Strudel on disney property? The answer to these questions is no where else. So if you enjoy Steins of German Beer, German Music, Spaetzel and Schnitzel put this on your todo list.
empyrean987 - neither Charles or Pete drink - so Steve would have been the only one to try steins of beer. Now if Craig had been along - he'd have beer.
8 months later, but did you listen to the review? Dancing and dancing with your kids was mentioned, music/great entertainment with a/c atmosphere was fawned over and noted, schnitzel and spaetzle were also mentioned. I don't expect them to bring Craig and Ryno to booze it up on every review, just as I would not expect a vegan to try the meats, but when they do, it is an added bonus for me!😁 I love any review they do,good or bad because we ALL view everything differently and that is what makes this show valid to me.
Germany is our sentimental spot to dine. When our father was alive, this is the spot we started our vacation at - (German Family) Me personally, I typically would fill up on the tomato and cucumber salad! Love that stuff! I also love the spaetzle with gravy - yum. WE LOVE THE SHOW. The kids love the show......The Grapefruit beer - Schofferhofer is served inside....100 of yum. Love the pretzel bread...... Again, the service is always good. I am not a fan of sitting with others but our group is normally over 8 so we have our own table...... My wonderful MIL loves the black forest cake..... Thank you for covering this spot...... :)
This show is much better when you go on location than in the studio. And the Biergarten would have been a perfect place since it has so much ambiance. I think this is a missed opportunity.
I love this place!!!! They do have a cheese soup but it’s seasonal and it’s only there some time in the fall I think. That soup and the pretzel rolls is amazing!
As someone from a small town where we love our own space, one of the magic moments in Disney is getting to meet people from different places. Whether at the restaurants, in a line, riding the buses from park to park, we enjoy the 'small talk' conversations with people from around the world. I know I will never see these people again, and it is ok to say, "Hi, where you guys from?"
I love the Biergarten; in part I think my affection for it stems from the fact that it was the first real sit down restaurant I went to as a kid with my family. Having said that, I’ve never felt awkward sitting at a table with other people (though I understand people who do feel that way) and find the food to be good overall. I think, if it were me, I would have asked for the salad to be freshened up if it had that many brown lettuce leaves in it. We also enjoy having a beer when we’re there and I really enjoy the atmosphere and the show. We try to eat there at least once each time we visit Epcot.
The seating arrangements are no less awkward than finding yourself sharing a table at a quick service and you don't speak to the other people...Even if you somehow find an empty table, I guarantee you'll be sharing it with someone whose party can fit into the seating that's left before you're done.
Thank you so much for making this video. Although I loved the theming and food this was probably the most awkward dinner I've ever had in my life. We were seated with a family of DVC members who make it a point to always eat at the Biergarten just so that they can talk to strangers. This meant that every moment that I didn't have food in my mouth I was being bombarded with questions about every aspect of my life. They simply would not leave us alone. And the thought that there may be more people like them, just waiting to pester you during your very expense meal, makes me never want to go back.
Several years ago we were a party of 6 and we had a very nice conversation with the 2 gentleman who were seated with us. Turned out they were Tony and Tom from the California DisUnplugged podcast. We enjoy the Biergarten.
I always enjoy this place! I have gone with my family (so seating wasnt bad) and with only my gf a few months ago. the seating for the two of us, especially me not being good at small talk with strangers, did make it kinda awkward but wouldnt deter me from going again
That chocolate cake with the whipped cream and cherries is Black Forest Cake. I love that you guys went there. I agree with Charles about the food : not "the best German food ever" but if you are someone who likes German food who also lives in an area where it isn't plentiful, this is a great place to go and get your schnitzel, spatzel, brats, and strudel. This reminded me so much of Munich that I got a little sentimental LOL. The communal sitting can be awkward if you're not used to it, so I understand that.
Odd. I always went to Japanese Steakhouses when I was younger and we always were with 2-3 other families with kids. It was always fun and never was awkward.
The meatballs and the Hunter sauce! Charles, man I forgot how awesome that stuff was. I grew up eating food like this and I had a blast at Biergarten, sat with strangers, they treated my friend and I like family. They were six we were two, two the family had been cast members, they told us some stories! Good ones. Biergarten was one of the highlights of my last WDW trip, can't wait to go back. Hunter sauce..........
Chances are, if the salads turn a little bit, it may be because they don't put anything on it to keep it fresh. I prefer this, because whatever it is they use to keep it green and crispy is very hard on my stomach.
the thing about sitting together. Europeans (center-south) tend tp be a lot more closer when it comes to personal space, if you go to Spain for example there is "no such thing" as personal space (we do have it but for most countries it would be considered as violation of space at that point. True that when you are sitted at a restaurant, people have their own tables, German bars are just different and I think they are the only ones that do it as something natural ( other EU countries might do it for the fun of it). It's a culture shock for those unaware but honestly it's one worth experiencing.
Biergarten holds a special place in my heart. It is a place we have dined with my in-laws and with my parents on 3 occasions over the past 8 years. At Christmas they have different songs (Silent Night is a german song) that the band plays. I think that if you are a communal person (I like to have a short convo with people and find out where they are from) it works. But I think the venue itself is the highlight and makes it worth being there. It is so awesomely immersive. It feels like Germany! There really is something for everyone to eat there. And the huge liter beers are awesome! Is it gourmet? No. But it is like comparing Value vs Moderate vs Deluxe resorts. Meaning that you can't really expect California Grill quality at a german-style buffet at half the price for the meal. So I'd be an 8/10 as well. It's not perfect food, but the experience is worth every penny.
I have eaten here every time we go to Orlando. My biggest complaint is that the tables are so small. They should have tables that seat 12 to 16 people so the patron can enjoy meeting new and interesting people (all people can be interesting). I grew up in a German family in a German community and no one ever had salt shakers on the tables in their homes (nutmeg or maybe paprika). Unlike the over salted American food German food tends to rely on flavors and spice instead of salt. If I were to rate this place I would give it a 10+ for ambience/theming; an 8 for food I love the quark style cheese cake and German style meats. Price gets a 9. Service (with one dark exception) always is a 9+. Nostalgias for my family and roots - Priceless. Dancing with my mother to a German song - 10+. So overall I would rate this a 9.9 out of 10. Now if it is Christmas and I can add a Candle Light Processional Dinner Package with it Then it gets to be 11 out of 10. BTW - dinner is better because they serve a very good sauerbraten (sp?)
We love this restaurant! Agree, the food is not mind blowing, but it is very good, and there are a lot of options for picky eaters. But the theming, immersion and entertainment put this place over the top. And it is a good value for the price point.
Biergarten and San Angel Inn are atmospheric. You go to the theming. The food is basic. but honestly I think this is more about the theming. Enjoy the beer, wine, pork, and sausages.
Years ago I went here once and, while it was OK there are so many other options in World Showcase I don't see me going here again, especially since once or twice a year I go to Columbus, Ohio where there is a decent German buffet at the German Village.
My husband and I would love to see a review of San Angel Inn. We went years ago and it was awful. You say it’s awful. However, very recently, I’ve seen some amazing pictures come out of there. Perhaps it’s changed?
Not a fan of the seating either. We ate there July 2nd & the food was still yummy. I do like that they have so many vegetarian options. Never seen any brown, wilted salad in all my visits.
I've been on one Disney Cruise (with my mom) and became friends with all of our table-mates immediately. Ate at Biergarten once (also with Mom) and didn't speak with anyone else at all. I guess each situation is its own thing. But I agree, a smaller table would have been nicer. Also, the food was better than I had expected, and the entertainment was fun. I'd like to go back there.
Biergarten is great, but: I´m from Germany, and this is not german food/culture, it`s only bavarian food/culture (including the tables). Bavarian culture/food is often confused with "german culture".
Great and enjoyable review as always. But, reviewing this place without mentioning the beer is like talking about corn flakes and not mentioning milk. 🍺
They have the long tables in Germany but if the restaurant are not full your not forced to seat at a table with other people, also they have smaller tables, the chose is your.
Not all beer gardens/halls in Germany have long tables or expect you to sit with strangers. That actually goes for beer gardens in all european countries. It does seem very unnecessary
I appreciate this review as my family will be eating here for the first time in October. I was wondering if anyone has ever asked to be seated at an empty table when the restaurant is not busy? Were you successful? If the restaurant is busy I will not complain about being seated with strangers, but if the restaurant is empty i will absolutely request an empty table as opposed to being seated with strangers.
Getting an empty table is normally not possible. Even if the restaurant is empty at some time, normally after opening, the other tables are saved for the peak time. And if you move to another table, the table will still be filled with strangers. There are three tables which are only for one party, for two of them the view is really bad. But if you like your own one just ask at the greeter podium if it's possible. Sometimes it is possible.
Thank you for this review it was really helpful...i am also doing Keto and this is my 3rd month and I am heading to Disney in 2 weeks... I know the temptations are gonna be everywhere
To say that this restaurant is not vegetarian/vegan friendly because the salad is not good is not accurate. Vegan Walt Disney World websites have reviewed and recommended this restaurant inside Epcot because it has a lot of variety in side dishes and potato salads and dinner/pretzel rolls that are amazing to have. As a vegan myself when i visit Epcot this is one of the dining experiences I’m really looking forward too because of the amount of options for vegans here are one of the the better places on property.
pictures of the salad looked good to me =X but maybe the camera is kind. Anyways, thanks for the review. I had no idea this buffet was so paleo-friendly. I assumed it would all be sausages with who-knows-what inside. I will definitely go for the carving stations and veg! As someone who sticks to a paleo diet, epcot can be one of the hardest parks to find food in so it's nice to hear about more options.
We ate there last year. It was just blah. We did the dining plan and were trying to make the most out of it. We had Via Napoli for lunch that day and it was sooooo good, so we went from that to blah.
My wife is from Germany and I lived in Germany for a while so we're both very familiar with German food. I love German food and the food they serve at the Biergarten is not good German food. Even though you may not like German food, this wasn't good German food. We won't go there again either.
I really like the food there, but I detest family seating. I don't feel comfortable eating with strangers; I don't do small talk that much. I'm a total introvert, and I found it incredibly awkward. [Edited to add: I always get the grapefruit beer when I go there (don't recall the name). It's the best I've had of its kind.]
BLynn Meade Hi, there! The beer you’re referring to is Schöfferhofer (Hefeweizen). It comes in grapefruit and a few other flavors, including pomegranate and lime. You can usually find it at the local Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s wherever you are.
Looking good Pete! While I have to admit I’m probably never going to eat at Biergarten since Metro Detroit has incredible German restaurants but my brother was thinking of going here and I will pass this along. Steve’s my guy with the Dis but Charles was right about the German food and letting him know the food style. Good review overall!
If you ever go for dinner/supper, the sauerbraten is quite tasty but it is ONLY available at the evening meal. I think that's a fault of lunch at Biergarten. The oompah band is always fun. Pete, which low carb are you doing - there are so many versions and I also do lower carb meals. Appreciate your input on that style of eating and congrats on the 22 pounds!
I’m an Orlando local and currently studying this summer in Bremen, Germany. Sitting with strangers is the norm here, but since it is also the norm not to talk to the strangers sitting at your table, it isn’t awkward.
My mom is from Bremen, and we've been there several times. Enjoy your stay!
I can't express what a great addition Charles is to the team. I really enjoy his reviews and how honest and candid he is, good or bad. Thank you!
lorettainny I agree! I think he’s really funny too
I like the sitting together with other families because I like getting to know people, ask where their from and what their plans are. You sometimes get some good suggestions for other places and learn about things you may not have known otherwise.
LOL Charles "It's probably because I was having fun judging their parenting" Haha!
Wanted to add that, believe it or not, Biergarten is one of the best places to eat if you are vegetarian or vegan. The chefs take amazing care of you.
Kira Lindsey I completely agree!!! As a vegetarian, Biergarten is my go-to buffet.

BTW, I also eat Keto, and it’s helpful for me to watch these from Pete’s perspective. I lost 50 pounds so far. Pete, you’re looking great!

"horns from the alps"? Yep. Alpenhorn. (smile) Ricola indeed. :)
I've been on Keto since January and it's great to have this perspective. I love your channel. Keep up the great work!
Awkward meal experience = podcast content gold!
After you drink a full liter of good, dark, German beer you won’t feel so awkward about your table mates!

Eating with strangers when restaurant is empty is disneys way of saving money not opening stations and cutting back on servers.

I loved that restaurant and trying all the different types of meats there. It was a really fun experience.
Wow, imagine they served 'tart and sour' on a German buffet! LOL!
Totally agree about the seating. It was somewhat awkward here more than any other sit down place! However we loved the food! My husband is of Austrian descent and we really did like the food. We will definitely go back next trip!

Charles did mention both the schnitzel and the spaetzle.
Pete is back! Have been waiting for another episode of the Disney Dinning Show!
I also do the keto diet and love it! Difficult to do at disney but definitely possible. An article about it would be awesome!
This show is much better when you go on location than in the studio. And the Biergarten would have been a perfect place since it has so much ambiance. I think this is a missed opportunity.
Charles: "I didn't feel gross...It's not the worst German food." LOL Wow! One place I sure don't wanna miss!
I LOVE the biergarten their Mac & cheese is the best.
Sitting with people is a part of the experience
I love this place!!!! They do have a cheese soup but it’s seasonal and it’s only there some time in the fall I think. That soup and the pretzel rolls is amazing!
My family loves Biergarten. Its a must do for us!
The Biergarten is great for Dinner during the Christmas season with the live music
LOVED this - one of my "must do's" every trip! Thanx, guys!!
Excellent review guys! Thank you so much!
The seating arrangements are no less awkward than finding yourself sharing a table at a quick service and you don't speak to the other people...Even if you somehow find an empty table, I guarantee you'll be sharing it with someone whose party can fit into the seating that's left before you're done.
I was shocked that Craig was not on this review
Alexis Fuhrey - yes - if it's a place with beer to review Craig should be there.
Yayyy!!! I’m so excited for a new DDS review :) Pete, you are looking nice and tan! 🤗❤️
I was impressed there was no giggling at the “hot sausage” comments, then I realized Ryno wasn’t there. I’m guessing that was a management decision.
I was waiting for someone to say "sausage-fest". I didn't hear it, but may have to listen again.
I always enjoy this place! I have gone with my family (so seating wasnt bad) and with only my gf a few months ago. the seating for the two of us, especially me not being good at small talk with strangers, did make it kinda awkward but wouldnt deter me from going again
Great review. You guys do the best Disney content on youtube
I love Biergarten! We are there for the first time in February and thought it was awesome!
Alright, those long horns are called Alpenhorns, used mainly for communication in Switzerland. Google my friends.
I am mostly German (my mother is full-blooded German) so I am offended by anyone who doesn't like bratwurst, Bavarian pretzels and stollen.
Black Forest cake is what you described with chocolate, whipped cream and cherries. It’s a German staple.
We were just there last week and I love this restaurant I would have given it a 10 but our server was awful so it gets a 9 even with the bad service.
“All you care to eat” sounds like an option. “All you can eat” sounds like a challenge. #fatguyproblems
I love the sausage salad! Lol
Thank you for the review!
It’s actually done the same way in Germany and many people react to it the same as you do - ignore the others at the table. And that’s ok.
Sorry you passed on the potato leek soup Steve. Pretzel bread dipped in it...KILLER!
Biergarten is great, but:
I´m from Germany, and this is not german food/culture, it`s only bavarian food/culture (including the tables).
Bavarian culture/food is often confused with "german culture".
Great and enjoyable review as always. But, reviewing this place without mentioning the beer is like talking about corn flakes and not mentioning milk.
🍺
They have the long tables in Germany but if the restaurant are not full your not forced to seat at a table with other people, also they have smaller tables, the chose is your.
congratulations Pete on your diet success! pretzel rolls are amazing, straight from heaven :)
Not all beer gardens/halls in Germany have long tables or expect you to sit with strangers. That actually goes for beer gardens in all european countries. It does seem very unnecessary
Taking my first trip to Disneyland and DCA next June. Any chance we could get a Best and Worst Dining in Disneyland/DCA? Maybe Dining Show reviews?
Alex Thank you for the reply. It will help to keep my expectations in check:)
Thank you for this review it was really helpful...i am also doing Keto and this is my 3rd month and I am heading to Disney in 2 weeks... I know the temptations are gonna be everywhere
Loving Hangry Pete lol so relatable
To say that this restaurant is not vegetarian/vegan friendly because the salad is not good is not accurate. Vegan Walt Disney World websites have reviewed and recommended this restaurant inside Epcot because it has a lot of variety in side dishes and potato salads and dinner/pretzel rolls that are amazing to have. As a vegan myself when i visit Epcot this is one of the dining experiences I’m really looking forward too because of the amount of options for vegans here are one of the the better places on property.
Steve, that dessert was black forrest cherry cake. One of my favorite German desserts.
pictures of the salad looked good to me =X but maybe the camera is kind.
Have you guys done one of the dessert parties?
19:30 - BLACK FOREST CAKE!!!!! It's my favorite dessert EVER!!!!
We ate there last year. It was just blah. We did the dining plan and were trying to make the most out of it. We had Via Napoli for lunch that day and it was sooooo good, so we went from that to blah.
I am a fan and had my best Birthday experience at WDW
Oh, yeah, that's why we didn't book at the BG, still curious.
Alpenhorn maybe? The Wurst Salad is the Best salad! My favorite thing! So good that I made their recipe at home! Yum!
