Hi friends!
Since everyone loved our DIY hoophouse build video so much, Joe & I thought it might be helpful to ya'll if we showed you how we installed our hoophouse sprinklers! These sprinklers make watering the hoophouse veggies easy peasy! Overhead irrigation provides the perfect amount of water for your plants without drowning them IF you have the right sprinklers. Let it rain in the hoophouse baby!
In today's video we show you how we installed our PVC piping & which sprinklers work best for us!
We used 1/2" PVC piping & garden misting nozzles. We tried several brands of sprinklers & they put off WAY too much water. But these misters are perfect.

Hi from Germany, we had a wet summer over here with a lot rain. Tomatoes and potatoes suffered from that, and powdery mildew spread into some other cultures.
It dependes where you live and what cultures you like to grow. For me, drip irrigation to feed the root zone works far better than overhead irrigation. I have a few moisture sensors to tell the system that the drip irrigation has to start and stop, depending on soil moisture.

@@HomeFreeAlaska - I absolutely love this system, when I finally get our greenhouse built hopefully this spring I am planning to use your system. I love that it replicates a mild rainfall, although now that I think of it, I am wondering about something... We tend to get a lot of rain here in Central-Eastern Ohio and I am planning on catching some of that rain to use in the garden since we only have one spigot on the house that I need to water not only our front gardens but also run 300 ft. of hose to water our big garden out back which is ridiculous. So I am wondering if this system will run on water catchment if I have my barrels up high enough to create a natural downspout pressure of some kind, what are your thoughts? Also, I would like to ask you and @RheinErftVideo if you can please describe these moisture sensors a little more for me. Thank you so much for all of these wonderful inspirational videos. @@suzycowan5072 Hi Suzy, just saw your question and this is the way I did it:
A used 275 gallon IBC tote / container / tank (make sure it was not used for chemicals before) is about 50 $ over here. To collect rainwater. You can stack them.
I attached a 12 Volt Waterspout Fountain and a magnetic valve. Without the valve, the water would rinse all the time.
The sensor for soil moisture is some electronic China product from ebay. You put it into the soil and you can calibrate it to what soil moisture you want / need.
If it´s too dry, the sensor will open the valve and start the pump. If moisture is about the right parameter, the system will stop.
The 12 Volt system is very good to be independent from electricity and just works from a solar panel and a car batterie.
For the drip irrigation, I made this from small tubes for electric wires to be used in house installations. Small holes being drilled into it so water drips into the rootzones of the plants (measure before how far you plant, I would say 15 inch distance is a good start for drilling).
As you can see, this is no ready-to-go system, but pretty easy to install and low-cost.
nice greenhouse build :) . I have just 2 points to 'critic' if you allow : never water the tomatoes leaves ( to prevent from deseases ) , and you should cover the ground with mulch or chalkboard to prevent from water evaporation. An irrigation on the ground and under the cover, would protect better the plants , and prevent from water waste :)
Thank you my friend but we’ve done ground irrigation before & wanted to try overhead this time. We’re ok with a little water waste as we live on a well & it’s not much waste anyway, it sinks down into the ground within minutes! And plant leaves get wet all the time with rain…that’s the natural way to water. 😉 I’ve never had any issues with watering this way…most important thing is air flow and circulation, prevents the plants from getting disease. 😊 Thanks for your recommendations & for joining us on this video! 😉

I really like the connection attachment for the water outside the building. This allows water that may be caught and saved on site to the pumped on the the sprinkler system using a submerged pump in the water storage and then pumped by hose.

Yes! I agree, we’ve done drip lines too & I love that I don’t have to reposition a watering system if we change the layout of the plants in the hoop house. No matter where the plants are, they’re going to get watered with the overhead sprinklers. 😉

I’d think about how you could use a watering timer at the other end of the hose and make the plastic over the fan work more like a awning framed out at the bottom. Looks great.

Yes we keep the windows and everything screened to keep the bugs & chickens out. If you Google plants that like warm temps, it’ll give you a good idea of what to and not to plant in the hoop house as it does maintain a warmer temp inside. We actually just transplanted all of our peas OUT of the hoop house because they did not like the heat lol. Also, not every plant needs pollination from bees etc., in fact the plants were growing in the hoop house don’t need to be pollinated. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage etc. Some plants do tho, Google has a good list of which plants need bee pollination & which don’t! Thank you so much for watching. Nice build. If your goal is lowering the temperature with shade cloth, put the black cloth on the outside of the greenhouse. Your black cloth absorbs the suns heat but you're currently keeping the heat in the greenhouse.
The shade clothe is on the outside of the greenhouse. Not sure what you mean lol? 😉

Hi Patricia! We LOVE Alaska, what part are you in? We spent 7 yrs there with the military. 3 yrs in Fairbanks & 4 yrs in Ketchikan. We’re considering retiring there. I don’t think you’d necessarily have to take it down in the winter…I just think it may need some added support beams down the center on the inside to help hold snow. But I think it would be important to clear the snow off of the hoop house every so often and not let it rest there. 😊
If you're worried about snow then a gothic arch with cross bracing should be able to handle much higher snow loads. Think how strong a medieval cathedral is and they're an arch supporting a triangle. You could still use a similar construction method, but have a wooden ridge line and possibly some center supports. They do need to be a little higher than a semicircular arch though.
If you have high winds then using twin wall polycarbonate is another option (more upfront cost, but will last a lot longer). This is a common solution in the Shetlands, where there are very high winds.
A gothic arch polycarbonate tunnel would be extremely tough. There's plenty of information on both ideas here on UA-cam.

It would more easy if you use a rain tank and an a cheap irrigation programmer, so, you don't need to take the heavy hose from the home to the greenhouse for watering. Only for refelling in case that it's empty. Greetings from Spain.
Have you thought about gutters for the hoop house? It depends a lot on what kind of soil and rainfall that you get.

We never did. But we did put gutters on our greenhouse. Fantastic way to catch water! 😊
How do you do gutters on a greenhouse? We put regular gutter on ours but had to only do about 1/3 of the length on each end because the greenhouses are 60 feet in order to get the slope. We have greenhouse plastic on each side that we roll up about half way. Do you use another type of gutter besides the syandard kind. Anything you can suggest we would hreatly appreciate 😁

It’s a shade clothe…made specifically for greenhouses. It reduces the warm temps inside while still allowing the sun to come thru for the plants. I linked where I got it in the description of the video. 😉
How has it held up to the weather so far? Looks like it's doing pretty good. With the addition of a watering system, have y'all added a sealer to the wooden parts?
Hi Chris, not yet...we haven't added anything to the wood. So far so good...the hoop house is holding up well! The plants are thriving. I just did an Instagram LIVE video yesterday @blessedandbeautifulhomestead, and showed an update of the inside of the hoop house. No complaints so far. I'm so happy we built this. No weeds, no bugs, no weather issues. Just a perfect growing environment :)

Hello again :) Thats a shade clothe. It's optional but it's very useful in reducing the inside temp of the hoop house while still allowing the sunlight through for the plants.
Here in VA its way too hot in the hoop house in the summer time, the plants would just die! The shade clothe makes it a lot better in there. That & the fans for circulating the air. I bought it on Amazon, pretty inexpensive. I put links to all the supplies in the description box of the video. :)
A simple flexi garden hose would have done the trick, Ezier and much cheaper, you can dill holes in the hose to fit plastic sprinklers into them.. Works for me

Good tip for how much to water is to place a small 1 inch deep Tin like what cat food comes in. Plants on average like 1 inch or 25 mm of water. When Tin is full from sprinklers turn them off. Been using this method for years in my hoop house.

I’m actually editing that video right now! 😂 I did a separate video to show y’all how we did the roll up bottoms! It’ll be live on Sunday. 😊 That wasn’t part of our original build. We actually just added that modification this week. It was pretty simple & the temps in the hoophouse are SO much better with the roll up vents at the bottom! Trying to get this video out to you guys because I think it will come in handy. 😉
Question -- What made you decide to go with an overhead sprinkler system vs a drip line system?
Hi! So the short answer is nothing! Lol. We actually just wanted to try something different, we’ve always done the drip systems in the past. I will say one of the things I really like about the overhead irrigation is when you turn it on, it’s going to water every inch of that hoop house. With drip lines it’ll water all the plants, but if we change our plant design/layout, we might have to reposition the drip lines, know what I mean? So I think it’s neat that the overhead irrigation is just like rain lol & it waters everything evenly. Thank you so much for watching & commenting. I hope you’ll subscribe & visit us again! 😊

Hi, I love the idea of hoop houses and I would love to build one. Can you tell me the benefits of a hoop house and how it compares to a greenhouse? I'm fairly new to gardening and have built garden boxes that did pretty well for our garden. Can you use a hoop house for your garden all year long? I live in Oregon. thanks
Hello friend! Not much of a difference between hoop houses/greenhouses etc. They serve the same purpose. The only difference really is the build itself. A greenhouse is more of a permanent/more expensive structure whereas a hoop house costs way less and isn’t as permanent in the sense that the materials used aren’t as durable. You can grow in your hoop house all yr. We do a summer crop & a winter crop with cold weather hardy veggies!😊

I’m just curious where you guys are. Where I live we would need roll up sides for better airflow through the plants. I would be afraid of mildew etc. I’m in southeast Texas 😊 Love your channel!!
We are in Virginia! And you are exactly right. The humid summers here would destroy these plants if we didn't have air flow. We did put roll up sides on the hoop house but not originally. We just modified the hoop house this week to add roll up sides. Hey there, So after two years since this video was published, have you any pros and cons comments regarding your system. For example, overhead watering can lead to a lot of leafy bacteria affecting your tomatoes etc. Another thing I didn't fully gather, are you guys located in Virginia or in Alaska?

It's a greenhouse shade clothe. Drops the inside temp at least 10-15 degrees while still allowing the sunshine in for the plants. :)
Do you think this high tower could stand up to Oklahoma winds?
Hi! Well I can’t say for sure as I don’t live in OK. But we live in VA & we do get high winds and even tornadoes here. It’s quite sturdy, built with a wood frame etc., and the 4 corner posts are cemented 2ft down into the ground. I’d say give it a shot. I have a question Tina. Does it really matter which way a hoop house is facing? N/S or E/W?
It just all depends on what you’re growing in there and the layout of your yard. For me, I typically want an area in my yard that the sun shines on the hoop house for the majority of the day…maybe shade in the evening. But if you’re growing plants that shouldn’t get sun all day, you may want to build it in an area that gets more shade throughout the day. But the hoophouse itself can be facing any way you want as sun can get thru all sides. Does that make sense?😊

No problems with strong wind?
None whatsoever! And we have some pretty bad storms/wind here in VA! But it’s built good & sturdy. The 4 corners are cemented 2 ft into the ground and the whole structure is built with wood except the cattle panels for the roof. I guess we’ll find out this summer…that’s when we have the worst storms/tornados lol! Hoping it’s strong enough. But I think it will be. 😊🙏🏻 Thanks for watching! You don't end up with mold in your hoophouse from that? I probably would have just laid a soaker house along the ground where I wanted to water.... awesome system but seems a bit more complicated than necessary
Not complicated at all Keith. Actually installing these sprinklers made my life way easier! I just turn it on & it waters the plants for me. We’ve never once had a mold issue. We have a lot of ventilation & air flow in the hoop house. 😉
Tomato leaves must not get wet. Drip irrigation system is a very good solution.
Hi Cemil, I’ve been growing my tomatoes in greenhouses for 4 yrs now with no issues. We heavily prune our tomatoes & do not allow them to get big and out of control. I’ve found that with really good air flow and circulation, there are no issues with their leaves getting wet.
After all, when they are plated outside (which I’ve also done) they get wet naturally with the rain. We’ve just never experienced issues when our tomato leaves get wet. Thank you for your comment and joining us for the video! Cheers. 😊

Hi Austria! We normally always use treated wood but wood here is so expensive with the pandemic so we just used what we had on hand. Not sure how long everything will last and what maintenance will be needed as this is our first season with the hoop house. But I plan on doing an update video. Thanks for watching! 😉
