Last Action Hero - WTF Happened To This Movie?

  • Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs.
In the latest episode we look back at what happened to director John McTiernan's meta-satirical "family" 1993 action flick LAST ACTION HERO, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Dance and Austin O'Brien. Written by Zak Penn and Adam Leff with a script by Shane Black and David Arnott, the film was set up to be a summer tentpole extravaganza, but ended up faultering and failing to connect with a mass audience, who weren't really onboard with the confusing thematic elements and meta quality. However, as time has gone on the film has garnered a cult status, with viewers finally "getting" the intent of the film and enjoying it for what it is (or rather, what it wants to be). With so much on the line and so much at stake for what should've been a slam dunk at the box office, we have to ask the question; WTF Happened To This Movie?

    • @mikey_vengenz
      @mikey_vengenz 4 роки тому +8

I think people did. But you can't really do a spoof of a genre that's not known for its depth, social commentary or moving character pieces without adding something to fill the void between action set pieces. If you're spoofing an action movie without adding anything to it, you just have... well... a watered down version of an action movie. Don't get me wrong, there was enjoyment to be had in this movie. Just not enough to make it a hit.

Maybe The Last Action Hero sucks. I haven't watched it since the '90s so I don't know. But Charles Dance was a good villain and he was memorable. I started watching Game of Thrones last year and I immediately recognized him, and even though he doesn't resemble the character in the books, I still thought he was great as Tywin Lannister. I guess he didn't have the star power back in the day to be considered a good villain in The Last Action Hero but I still think he was good.

I watch Last Action Hero at least once a year and never fails to make me laugh.
Arnie's comedic timing was on point, Charles Dance is fantastic as the cartoon villain, and Bridgette Wilson was also funny as the tough girl posing as a damsel in distress. The kid is ok, nothing memorable, he's just the placeholder for the audience to live Arnie's film adventures.
Love how the movie parodies action films I grew up watching, and it really does everything great up until the last third, where the change in tone seems quite jarring.
It's a movie with problems, but one I can sit back and enjoy over and over.

I also think a lot of folk who didn't see the film believed the bad smell that permiated around the movie & passed on the "it's shit apparently" so less folk watched it and it sank as a result. I was 23 when this movie came out, and had just moved to Phoenix with my dad, who was an elevator mechanic. While he was working on the new Harkins theater in Tempe AZ, the owners came by and handed out free tickets to all the workers, so we saw a ton of movies that year for free: LAH, Jurassic Park, In the Line of Fire, Rising Sun, etc.

I love this movie!! I was in my late 20's when it came out, and my gang of friends at the time were all highly anticipating this movie, and we went in a group of 9 to the first night's premiere. We actually packed a picnic basket [smuggled in God knows how] and it was a packed house. We have never had so much fun at the movies, ever again. Of course, we have all gone our separate ways [except for maybe 2 of us] but when we speak to each other, we always bring up our night at this movie and what a blast it was. I have the VHS tape of this movie and i have recently got the digital copy. Long live Jack Slater!!!

I showed this film recently to my girlfriend, who isn’t an Arnie or action movie fan by any stretch, she thought it was great. I think it’s hugely underrated. The decision to go up against Jurassic Park was bad in hindsight, but they probably thought they couldn’t lose given Arnie’s status at the time.

I wasn't a kid when this came out, I was in my early forties and I loved this movie. I loved it in the same way I loved the Batman TV series with Adam West. It was fun, funny enough, and campy. There is not a thing wrong with that and I appreciate that Arnold made a movie which made fun of his action genre. That was a first and it was a brave undertaking. But then I loved other losers, like 'John Carter', so I'm probably the crazy one.

I like John Carter, too, but it needed better editing. John Carter does not start until 5:38 in when Ned reads the telegram. The scene in the general store can be cut out without loss. As can the interrogation and imprisonment scenes at the fort. Pick it up with Carter galloping across the desert with Colonel Powell and his troops in pursuit.
I was shy of 40 when Last Action Hero hit theaters, but I got it. Loved it. But I got and loved The Book of Eli, too.
Yeah, Jurassic Park was the giant-killer that year, but once you saw Jurassic Park once, why see it again? OTOH I still watch Last Action Hero.

Last Action Hero is the dictionary definition of "criminally underrated film". Pure 90s meta, but with a lot of heart and feeling, which was missing from many more cynical meta works of that era. Worth it for the Hamlet and premiere scenes alone IMO. Some of the lines spoken by Arnie are stellar, you've got Anthony Quinn hamming it up as a mobster and you get to hear Charles Dance say the words "canine recta". What's not to like?

It's like you didn't even watch the whole movie. Charles Dance kills it as the main villain out of left field. It plays on the fact that someone that's set up to be just a henchman in the movie universe can become the main villain and wreak havoc in the real world when all the movie universe rules no longer bound him to the role of lowly henchman.

I have fond memories of this movie and think it was much less bad than people remember. That having been said, JoBlo nailed it with these points.
    1) Any movie was going to get swallowed by JurassicPark which was a generational must-see.
    2) The movie really needed someone who could pull off comedy better than Arnold.
    3) The script had wonderful ideas, but often leaned towards cutesie too often.
Last Action Hero could have been an EPIC parody of action movies that stood on it's own as a good movie (like GalaxyQuest which is both the best Trek parody AND the best Trek movie at the same time).
