Most of the time in my life when I didn't watch a good movie it was because I didn't know it existed. That changed in the 2010s when my reason became, didn't manage to get it.
I always describe this movie as, if you want to see a dragon movie but aren't really into wizards or magic. Then this is a must watch. I personally think the filmmakers did an amazing job of taking something most people are familiar with and throwing a spin on it. Love this film.
Reign of Fire was awesome ti see in the theater. The dragon effects, Matthew McConaughey, and Christian Bale were great. That Star Wars play scene was cute.
Loved this movie growing up! The depictions of the Dragons and the world they now rule was awesome to watch! I wish we have more dragon movies like this.
@@owenjones3197 but unlike most species they don't actually exist. So we're not exactly going off fossil records, more like books that say things. If they were real I'd agree with you
A very underrated movie. I remember enjoying the effort the film makers went to to create an authentic world and the actor’s performances. Thank you for reviewing this film.
I was born in 93. This, A Knight's Tale and LoTR were my childhood. I can honestly say those three movies shaped how i believe a man should live his life.
Should absolutely come back as a streaming series, telling the story from the prologue of this movie, through the downfall of the human race, and into the struggling to survive stage.
"Reign of Fire" was such a fun movie and one of my favorites from the era. Plus, in it they do a better job making a Star Wars project than Disney ever did.
one of the most criminally underrated movies of all time. i first saw this on dvd when it first came out in 02-03 i was like 8 and it stuck with me forever. it was one of the scariest movies i ever watched. the setting of it and atmosphere is to this day the most accurate depiction of what i would imagine a world ravished by dragons would look like. it will always be one of my favorite movies of all time.
I still remember so many scenes from this movie. Sorry for the spoilers, but the scene where Butler's character dies especially. The human aspect made this movie more than a dragon flick. Love it.
It is interesting how much the marketing and reviews matter. I'm European and it wasn't marketed as a major film in most countries, if it even got a major release at all. I first saw it on DVD without having read any of the reviews or knew it bombed in the US, so I had no prejudice. To me it was just a fun action adventure with some drama and dark humor. I always liked it as the acting is great, the sets are beautiful and the CGI still looks amazing. For some reason it reminds me of Enemy at the Gates. Another awesome movie.
It's undeniable that Reign of Fire is the scariest depiction of dragons in cinema. The movie really made them like walking flying nukes, ready to scorches everything on sight.
The scene where Daenerys burns down the Lanister military convoy is almost identical to a scene from Reign of Fire where the London male dragon does the same!
This was one of my favorite movies growing up. A post-apocalyptic movie with dragons? It kind of inspired a part of the book series I'm writing. My intro to Gerard Butler as well, who was a huge fan of Bale before this movie. McConaughey is almost unrecognizable as Van Zan.
I have a suspicion that the creature artists from Game of Thrones took inspiration on the dragons from this movie, as the GoT dragons look eerily similar to the ones from RoF.
2:14 That same "leopard walk" by the dragon was most definitely done before this movie. 21 years before, to be exact. The dragon in Dragonslayer (1981) had that same kind of walk. Dragonslayer still remains one of my all time favorite dragon movies. I was only 8 years old when it came out. And that dragon truly terrified me. That one scene when the baby dragon was ripping the foot off of the princess, gave me nightmares for years. Yet I still loved the movie, fear and all. The special effects, while certainly dated now, were groundbreaking back in 81.
The stalking scene (at @1:48 in this vid or about 1:33:30 in the movie itself) is one of the best cinematic depictions of dragon hunting I've ever seen. It just feels so perfectly visceral that even 25 years later I still feel like it's documentary spec real to me.
Man I'm glad to see this movie get some love. It was a decade early to the 2012-era disaster/global cataclysm hype that would have propelled this movie to the top of the box office. I think a big part of its lasting power is that it is mostly a human drama, with very fascinating characters played by great actors. The trailers may have promoted the humanity vs. dragon action movie showdown the public wanted to see, but what we actually got was honestly much much better for having taken itself just a little more seriously, and while that may have disappointed early audiences and caused its flop, it's a 2000's era classic that still holds up and shows how a risk on an original movie concept can payoff in the end.
I remember watching this in theatres when it came out. I was 9 years old, and damn if it doesn't stick in my head as my all time favorite Dragon movie to this day.
Many years later, without any rewatching, I still remember the beginning of the movie, with a boy discovering a dragon in a coal mine. Being a boy of the similar age myself back then that just absolutely blew my imagination. The pure horror of them being locked in the see through elevator, experiencing the swarm of dragons passing through them to the outside world.
Imagine the nightmares Quinn had, not just because of being trapped in that elevator with his dead mother, but how he looked right into the dragon's eye, it looked back and had nothing but hatred for him.
I was lucky enough to get tickets for a pre-release showing of this here in Nottingham,England...I loved it,I knew Rob Bowman would do a good job as he was responsible for some of my favourite episodes of Star Trek:The Next Generation.I will never understand why it wasn't the hit it should have been...I still have the film on dvd and I still love it.
I found the "realism" aspect of this one refreshing - what might happen to modern humanity if dragons actually entered the picture. Unlike more comfortable fantasies that put dragons in alternate worlds or imbue them with wisdom or other noble qualities. Those are entertaining, too, but pretty familiar by the time Reign came out. House of the Dragon is giving dragons more depth and character now - a natural evolution.
I always thought that this movie inspired the making of monster hunter, the concept of hunting dragons, even the design of its most popular wyvern, rathalos. This is forever be my favourite movie of all time, i wish hollywood back in making great movies like this, just simple story, memorable characters and good action movie overall
This was a well made and quite entertaining movie. I think it suffered from two things, bad timing, and one of the number one problems with people... unrealistic expectations. That is that people were expecting one thing, and got another, thus... they didn't like it. It is kind of like how drinking water is amazing when you are hot and thirsty, but if you were EXPECTING to be drinking lemonade and took a huge drink of water... GROSS. I had no such alternative expectation, so loved it from the first time I saw it.
I loved that movie when I was young. It felt top notch. The critics has no influence over this epic. Thanks for reminding me. I'm off to watch it again for the 24th time. Cheers!

I’m a huge fan of this movie for all the reasons you mentioned. The movie had two connections to theme parks as well- some of the sets were relocated to Disneyland Pari’s Disney Studios Park as a backlot tour highlight, and Theme Park journalist Jim Hill reported that Imagineers were partially banking on this film’s box office to provide fodder for a theme park land called Beastly Kingdom, a land based on Dragons, Unicorns, and other mythic beasts. The land had been planned for Animal Kingdom, and had been delayed due to budget cuts. They felt tying it into the film might save the land from being abandoned if it proved to be a massive hit, and the dragon attraction would have a huge IP anchor, but obviously that didn’t happen. Instead, Pandora, the World of Avatar was built on the space designated for it.
The dragon CGI is so good in this film. I'm sure it was helped by the dark/murky settings, but I still think it looks amazing. Enjoyed the ps2 game back in the day too!
I always loved this movie, what a cast, what groundbreaking vfx... Back in the day VFX wasn't abused like they are usually done today... these dragons hold up against those in GoT imo...
The scene of Van Zan jumping into the dragon wielding the double handed axe is forever etched into my brain!
