i’m glad i saw this video before purchasing the sentinels. i haven’t tried using two different contrast colors to get shading before like you did what with the blues. the only thing im going to change is that ill prime with different silvers to give TMM as contrast paint covers over metallic beautifully while still maintaining the shine
I have said it before and I’ll say it again, these videos are great for hobbyists of all different scales and genres. Thank you for the excellent content!
I'mma level with you, chief, I am not really a fan of the Sentinels. Even by the outrageous standards of comic books, to me, it strains credulity that the United States government would, rather than employ the use of teams of trained federal agents or something, choose to commission a private contractor to tackle the mutant problem with... Big goofy robots. With that in mind, I was quite prepared to skip this release. However... Your video has done a wonderful job of changing my mind! I am pleasantly surprised by the customisation and posing options - building them looks like great fun! - and the paint scheme shown in this tutorial seems actually fairly simple to achieve. Sorastro, you've done it again!
@@Sorastro Will you be doing a video on Rhino, when he's released? He looks like he's perfect material for a video - I'm sure you'll find a way to make painting all that grey really interesting.
I honestly thought you were going to start with a basecoat of silver (Stormhost Silver / Iron Hand Steel) through the airbrush before going in with the Contrast. But once again you've surprised me by simply sponging gradients of black/grey/white to create the textured effect.... It definitely helped to sell the metallic effect. They turned out magnificently. May I ask how long did it take you to paint the 3 Sentinels? I know there's a lot that goes in the video production aspect as well.
very interesting and apparently fun painting process. I don't really feel like trying contrast type paints but the result you have achieved is very nice. I will try to do something similar without using contrast paints. thanks for the video.
Was the choice to use Contrast paints made to achieve that gritty battle-worn look, or did you have another reason for using it as opposed to normal acrylic paints?
Hi! Good question! I chose them because they have the combined properties of being both quite saturated, yet also quite translucent, allowing the texture of the underpainting to show through. That being said, thinned acrylic paints could also be used ofc 🙂
I know they aren't everyone's favourite but I absolutely love the Sentinels. You've made them look so good in this I'm going to have to pick up the box even though I didn't plan on running them just to add to my teams display board. X-Men all they way!!!
such a smart trick with the sponging and contrast paints, makes these really daunting figures to paint seem easier. I wonder if i can use the same technique on my hulkbuster :D
What a great tutorial! Thank you! I've tried contrast paints and struggled with them each time. I think I'm using too much and the models are way too splotchy. Any advice on using contrast paints?
Thanks Patrick! It's hard to give general advice with Contrast Colours because they can be used in a variety of ways. But I wouldn't usually expect to achieve especially smooth gradients with them when working over large areas (which in this instance isn't an issue because I'm going for quite a noisy, textured finish).. 🙂
I have the full set of the Tamiya Panel Liners, though I was told they can cause spider-webbing and cause plastic models and minis to become brittle and snap or crumble. I assume the primer will help protect it, but have you had any issues with that?
Thanks a lot Joseph! I can't actually remember where I used it on the mini, but this is the SC Prussian Blue (they also have a US site): scale75.com/en/artist-range/820-prusian-blue.html 🙂
Wow this is an awesome tutorial, I never figured you could use contrast like that , is it possible to use regular acrylic paints and get the same effect ?
amazing paint job as always, I only wish I was a quarter as talented as you are. i recently tried painting my sentinels with paints from turbo dork. i'd be very curious to see what kind of paint job you could come up with using said paints.
Hey! I think thinning the paint helps, and soaking up the excess as you go. But also, the heavily textured surface I created here means that the paint doesn't actually need to be especially smooth 😁
Do you have to clean the airbrush thoroughly each time you use it? I have everything to airbrush, but I don't want to take it apart fully just to clean it after each time. Every now and then is different, but each time sounds daunting and tedious when I can just use a brush and go for tabletop ready.
Hey Toby! It depends how long I've been using it for, and whether I've been shooting primer too, but I do generally do a quick tear down and clean after using the airbrush. It's a bit of a pain, but I'm pretty fast at it now.. 😁
@@Sorastro thank you for the response. I've been trying to stream myself painting and I can't figure out how to do it without causing a big headache for myself.
Hi Andrew! I'm super excited about Shatterpoint, and I can tell you that the minis are beautifully well done! (Watch for a new painting series coming next year..) 😀
I know you were asking Sorastro, but I will say that I love the new sculpts... I'm just annoyed the scale makes it incompatible with the Legion ones. Would have been nice if the minis were cross compatible with each game.
@@ArynCrinn same as Legion was incompatible with Imperial Assault. I love the style change with the sculpts and art. I’m afraid how much it’s going to cost me in the future haha

Excellent Jesse! 😀
I've never thought about using sponges for undercoating! This looks so easy and a really fantastic effect
Thanks! It's a lot of fun, and is great for creating concrete/stoney textures too (which you can see me doing in my Sanctum Sanctorum vid)! 😀
Love seeing the development and styles used. Been here since imperial assault stormtroopers . Nice work again
Thank you my friend! You have indeed been following and kindly commenting for many years now! Much appreciated 😀

Oh man I gotta go buy those contrasts now. Beautiful work.
Thanks a lot David! I'm glad you like how they turned out 😀
Contrast paint is so versatile. Great work all around.
Thank you very much! I agree it certainly has its uses..! :)
It is always a joy to watch you paint. Constantly learning new things from you. I’m looking forward to the Star Wars Shatterpoint series.
Thanks so much buddy! 🤗
Glad you're back!
Thank you! 😁
I have been painting along with you for some time and it's been really gratifying to see your style evolve and grow alongside mine.
Wonderful! Thank you Nathan 😀
Amazing as usual
Thanks so much 😊
