  • Deleted Scenes, Bloopers, and Alternate Endings are noting new when it comes to a movies home release. But Dodgeball may have taken that trend to a whole new level. Upon release of the DVD, Dodgeball fans were treated to some of the weirdest bonus features possibly ever put on a wide release. Including a completely depressing ending that Dodgeball fans have never seen. What do you think of the "original" ending of Dodgeball?

I had heard that this was the original ending, but I never believed it. Early in the movie they reference the exact esoteric rule that allows them to win the game, and there are several other setups that only make sense when they’re paid off in the finale.

    • @dserv
      @dserv 7 місяців тому +68

There’s no way it was the real ending. The “alternate ending” is a joke special feature. The idea that the director walked off set insisting on it is funny, but obviously a joke.

@@dserv I could see it being the original original ending, while the script was still in the rough draft phase. It would be the ultimate send up for this type of movie.
But yeah, there's no way it survived long enough to require re-shoots to change. It would have been recognized as being way too much of a downer for a comedy fairly early on.

Claiming him bettin on his own team was "random" didn't make sense to me. Seemed like it was pretty well set up. Honestly though... I thought it'd be funnier if he bet on the rival team and then they lost, and his winnings that allowed him to buy globatech came from Ben Stiller winning. That would have been even more hilarious to me. Ben Stiller got what he wanted, to win... but still lost the war.

@@elementalcobalt1 Yeah, but that would make no sense as a bet on Globo would have paid out barely anything at all, with them being heavy favorites.

Thank you! It always bothers me when I see articles talking about the "original" ending of Dodgeball, when it was pretty clear to me that that was meant as a gag. Not only would ending the movie there cut off many subplots as was mentioned in this video, but it would also shave off about 10 minutes from an already short movie. This would have likely made it below feature length. Plus, the twist with the sudden death is foreshadowed earlier in the movie.
Again, thank you for (hopefully) putting this one to bed.

Feature length is 60m+, Dodgeball's runtime was 92 so it would still be feature length.

i use to work at a holiday inn express and i was chillin in a room with a friend, his girl, and his girl's friend. i ordered the movie on the phone through the movie on demand service we had and put this one on. I was on a few handles (xanax) with weed and my friend's girlfriend's friend was laying down on her stomach at the foot of the bed, kind of blocking my view. now . . . she was a bigger girl and the handles and weed had her looking very nice from that angle.
that was the one and only time I got with a big girl and I had to rewatch the movie. i enjoyed both very much i repeated. the movie more than the chick.

i wonder what would have happened if he kept the old ending. it comes out of nowhere and adds to the bleak meaninglessness of dantes day. maybe smith makes more serious movies moving forward instead of feel good sarcastic slacker stoner comedies. chasing amy and jersey girl still have snap and wit and funny moments and a pinch of jay and silent bob but they show a road forward in well written dramas if those didnt bomb. could be critically acclaimed in the same breath as linklater tarantino amd the coen bros. but then he backed away mostly from ambition leaned into “what the people want” got high on his own supply literally got lazy rested on his laurels and aside from a few interesting oddities in red state and tusk has been playing the hits ever since. maybe if he cuts out all the weed some ambition can creep back in and he can deliver something great again. unfortunately his primary financiers for years were the weinsteins so hes going to have to convince someone else to give him a real budget again. the last two got made and every penny they could find in the couch cushions wound up on screen but you can still see the limitations.

Average Joe’s are meant to be the heroes of the film and it would’ve been unfair to see them lose after all they fought for in trying to save their beloved gym from foreclosure against Globo Gym as White Goodman was such a greedy, selfish, cocky and arrogant jerk who’d do anything to stop them.

The test audience theory made me remember that Robert De Niro movie where he plays a producer that has to work with an out of control director. De Niro's character is pressured by the studio to convince the director to change the ending of a movie in which a dog is shot and killed. Not "old Yeller" style either. That movie just had the dog die off screen. In this movie the director wanted to show the dog getting shot directly in the head. Like in full view. No cut aways or anything. The producer and director spend the entire movie going back and forth about the ending. When it comes time to show it to the audience De Niro thinks the director did a reshoot and fixed it. At the last minute the original ending is shown and the audience is horrified by what they see. By the end of the movie De Niro's character is left at the airport and presumably fired by the studio for not handling the director better.

Ted Lasso did the subversion of the “underdog storybook ending” the best-albeit as a sports comedy, it’s quite a different tone from Dodgeball. But the S1 finale basically ripped off Rocky only as a foreshadow of the series finale in Season 3, where they’ve set up a context where the ethos about it not mattering whether a team wins or loses is firmly established, and the fact that they didn’t win the league like they set out to is an afterthought.
How could this have informed the ending of Dodgeball? Well, if Vince Vaughn’s character had leveraged the payout by some other means (perhaps even by betting against the Average Joe’s). However it ensues or explained from there, it’s a fertile ground for the antics of Ben Stiller’s character to be in a situation where he’s won the silly little dodgeball tournament, but he’s losing his gym and everything that matters beyond the day’s events, and vice versa for the Average Joe’s

The ending we got was better and I actually thought Joes did lose the first time I saw this in theaters but as soon as the ref blue the whistle I new the tables had turned because of White stepping over the line on the throw.

I absolutely love this movie. Along with Tropic Thunder, it's my favorite comedy movie. I watch it fairly regularly and no matter how many times I've seen it, I still get plenty of laughs. I was unaware of some of these DVD extras, as we did have the DVD and I went through them, but I dont think I watched the commentary so I missed on that absolute gold mine of comedy. Great concept for a commentary and really adds to this already hilarious film.

The alternate (original) ending was too abrupt and incomplete, not to mention a cop-out. The actual ending allowed for sudden death, which offered a far more satisfying closure. However, a couple of things didn't make sense...
    1. If White stepped over the line before hitting Peter, he's out. Game over. The ref should have called that immediately, seeing as he had no problem making a similar call earlier in the tournament. An improved alternate ending would have Peter not losing focus after eliminating Me'Shell, which was incomprehensible at that point in the tornament.
    2. (Covered in commentary) How did Peter possibly have time to bet against Globodyne oops Globo-Gym, considering he originally planned to skip the final? He was at the airport already, for the love of Mike. I would suggest that he bought off the judges to evade disqualification, except only Gordon knew the by-law!

You guys know earlier scenes in a movie can be added in after the ending, right? as in if they needed to increase the movie length, and change the ending in the process, they can add more scenes to set up a new ending

I honestly don't even care of it was the original or not. But it would've been a hell of a subversion of underdog sports movie-- and ballsy-- to release a movie where the underdogs lose and that's it. I find that hilarious just because that's the most subversive thing you can do in an underdog movie
