Ang Lee made a great Hulk movie. People might not like the cinematography or the CGI but in terms of story, it captured the psychology of character perfectly.
I still think 2008's Hulk is an amazing film, despite all its flaws. I just want Hulk to go back being more brutal. I like Professor Hulk, but they've been making him the butt of jokes, specially in the She-Hulk series. They don't have to completely revert him to being a mindless animal; after all his arc was interesting (even though I hate he "mastered his hate" and became Professor Hulk offscreen), but would be nice to see him more... Hulk.
Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors, I love what he did in the 2008 Hulk movie. There's nothing wrong with him wanting a good script, very few actors like him are willing to be outspoken and holding on to what they believe is right. I'm glad he stayed away, especially with the big mess that is Disney and the MCU these days and the way they completely destroyed the Hulk they got now. Mark Ruffalo is nothing but a patsy at this point and he'll just trudge along with whatever ridiculousness they're asking him to do as Hulk. I'll take the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie over any of the sludge being churned out by the MCU right now.

They need to pull a Black Widow and make a movie that takes place either during his time on Sakaar in Ragnarok, or during the 18 months in a gamma lab during Endgame. Those are crucial moments in his life and I'd like to see more of it onscreen. If it is to take place in the current timeline, a solo Hulk movie needs Leader as the villain, Betty returning, Bruce and Ross making peace with each other, and maybe him, Jennifer and his son defeating the villain.
I still remember how dope it was in the comics and Bruce finally worked on himself enough to become Professor Hulk. He was such a badass , the body of Hulk and the full brain capacity of Bruce Banner. Man, they really butchered him in endgame and so forth.
Norton's Hulk was excellent. Is just that they keep rebooting instead of sticking into a line. Norton's Hulk is far superior in character and acting, but I understand Norton was not very collaborative with the company.
For anyone curious, the guy who played Bruce Banner in the 2003 Hulk movie was legendary Australian actor Eric Bana. While he hasn't been in anything as noteworthy since then, he still stars in movies. Either way, Ang Lee's HULK is an underrated classic, and some would argue IS the definitive Hulk movie.
It's not hard. Both previous films did perfectly because they were focusing on different aspects of him. The 2003 film was the only one with his traumatic childhood and how it manifested into the Hulk, the 2008 one delt with the hunted and hounded, and very impressively cunning, beast man. Comic characters have too many aspects to them to be condensed into a single movie unless you're trying to go for one or 2 aspects
I feel like if they had the feel and seriousness of the 70’s Hulk, the writing style of Immortal Hulk, CGI of Infinity War, and practical effects of The Dark Knight series, a Hulk movie would work.
They need to take the Hulk-Skaar moments from World War Hulks comic run and make it into a father-son retrospective movie where Banner reconcile with his childhood trauma as a way to teach Skaar what it means to be a superhero and what it takes being a Hulk with what baggage it carried, along with him having anxieties about parenthood and rising to break the cycle of his abusive past. That'd be a whole family buffet of some capeshit film.
Ok, so I know youtube is the thing you do but there is large (#dozens of us) contingebt of film fans out there who definitely think Ang Lee's 'Hulk' is not only a good film but maybe a great one. I'm maybe slow, but it's compelling, complex, multifaceted and respects it's viewer and their ability to put a thought together. That's not what superhero cinema is about now (or maybe ever) but his film is still one of the most interesting and revisitable entries in the sub-genre
Ang Lee's Hulk movie is great.. As people say, it has its own problems, but more people appreciate it as time passes by... My biggest gripe with those who shit on the movie is how little research they do before typing stuff online.. The action scenes were short and the story had to be dragged because of the budget but Ang Lee knew his assignment and captured the essence of Hulk perfectly... I never hated the movie even watching it for the first time.. I only complained about the action being short or too dark, but on rewatch and current technology, watching his fights at night is actually awesome... We can talk about everything else about the movie, but he's the closest to the comics when it comes to abilities and power... Just one example; How many superheroes get nuked?? This one did in his first film
Their only chance of redeeming Hulk would be if they did a prequel movie like Black Widow and showed the time between Age of Ultron and Ragnarok, with him meeting Valkerie getting into the Sakaar tournaments and probably defeating some bully champion like the Red King. That's the character's ONLY HOPE!
I loved Ang Lees Hulk movie . It was darker than most . Granted I was 7 when it came out . I still rewatch that today before watching the 2008 Norton movie
I don't think, even today, CGI is good enough to truly bring the character to life. Ang Lee's was a pretty good movie with dire CGI, what followed were movies that weren't as good with better CGI. But there's still a disconnect between what you're seeing and full reality.
The Ed Norton Hulk movie is a good Hulk movie. And it excites me that he was starting to learn to control it. Shame they reversed it with Ruffalo. Even if “I’m always angry.” Is cool… it ruined the whole breathing/meditation thing. They could’ve even done both.
It's definitely NOT impossible to make a good Hulk movie. Those who think so are most likely unfamiliar with the Hulk beyond what we see in films. Also I'd argue that Ang Lee's Hulk is a good movie and he sure did have respect for the source material when you look back on his interviews and thoughts about the film nowadays.
@eliasbranch5383 Agreed. They missed the boat in Endgame not giving him redemption by fighting Thanos again but this time even more pissed off because Black Widow died. Instead they gave the flat-assed megabitch the scene instead. Totally whiffed on that one and has basically been just a weak little soy hulk since Ragnarock.
Yea those 2003 pre-disney era marvel movies had something of a charm in that aspect even if they were cheesy or cringe , it added to the movies appeal. We as fans shouldn't have gotten greedy and expected all movies to be like spiderman and rejected all others. And kinda shows that we don't really appreciate something till it's lost after watching disnefication of Marvel brand.
Err, they did make make a good hulk movie called The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton. That version of Hulk was the best. Everything about the design and capturing Edwards Hulk is comic book masterpiece.
I didnt mind the Ang lee version, it was slow paced but as the character is so limited in story layers, he turns green & just smashes things up (even in the comics) slower pacing seemed to mean a slower approach worked I thought. there seemed to be a lot of emphasis on the desert nuclear test like symbolism, and a lot about philosophy, they understood THE HULK wasnt the point, BANNER was, and it was as much about confronting his past as it was action set pieces. Also the extra story layers worked - Banner's phychotic father with his god complex, experimenting on his own son, & the big ruthless business guy (although a big corporate stereotype) tied in with General Ross
The absorbing man becoming David Banner was not the directors decision. Ang Lee wasn't the writer he was the director! Director don't write their scripts unless they want double duty or triple duty
The first film actually acknowledged that the madder he gets, the stronger he gets. There's a scene where he actually gets bigger and stronger. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
The incredible Hulk is still the best Hulk representation physically and a walking powerhouse. It was THE solo Hulk movie THAT showed a jaded and angry Hulk that kinda continues Ang Lee's Hulk arc who was good in a comic way like the child mentality of the hulk but got Tired as time passed by the time we see Norton's Hulk. Guess they didn't want to continue with Norton cause he was really hard to handle since he is very hands-on with his material and Disney or marvel didn't like that.
I actually like the ang Lee hulk movie and I saw it in theaters but I can agree it would be more expensive to bring the the actual hulk to life cause of all it would take to create the character alone and professor hulk that showed up in endgame wasn’t even like by comic fans when the comics did it I doubt we see another hulk project any time soon not because of rights issues but cause it doesn’t feel like they want to address the elephant in the room and factor in the infinity saga characters that are still around at this point
There's all kinds of debate back and forth between the '03 and '08 films, and what's been done with the character since, but none of that is the real problem. Hulk is basically a werewolf story - regular guy turns into monster when conditions are met, doesn't remember what he did during that time, tries to resolve his problem. There's only so many times/ways you can tell that story with the same character/actor. Studio/production issues aside, the way they used him through the MCU was probably the best compromise.
Stan Lee outright said Hulk was just his own Frankenstein mixed with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Bruce Banner is like Victor Frankenstein - a scientist ashamed of his monster - and Dr Jekyll - a good natured scientist trying to control his monster side. The Hulk is like Frankensteins monster - a misunderstood innocent monster - and Mr Hyde - a scary violent spit personality monster.
The real reason is Hulk and Namor for that matter, are still owned by universal and marvel made a deal with them. The deal was you can use these characters as much as you want but you can’t give them solo projects.
My problem is that since the Avengers, Hulk has become more recognised on earth as a good guy since working with the team and acknowledged for saving the world like in Endgame, not to mention make peace with Bruce Banner off-screen. This would mean Hulk would have to do something very drastic to change everyone's minds to become the monster again that we all know him for and be exiled from earth to start the future Hulk instalments.
I'm convinced people just didn't watch the show because it was mostly pretty good. There were a few cringe, MCU moments but for the most part it was good
@@beansfebreezeit was ass i watched the full series and i wish i could unwatch it. The Hulk is one of my favorite heroes in Marvel Comics because like Wolverine, he went through childhood trauma. Because of the abuse he endured by his father, the Hulk has existed within Bruce Banner's mind and is a part of Bruce Banner's psyche. What the MCU needs to do is to let Hulk become the unpredictable, rampaging, savage beast that we know and love.
Not sure if it's an unpopular opinion but it is my opinion, the problem with all the Hulk movies is that they focus on him being vulnerable to Betty Ross, even though I like both the 2003 and 2008 movies, they were kinda boring regarding the storyline around Betty Ross. One of the best scenes involving Hulk I think is during the first Avengers movie, when Hulk actually transforms and it's.. scary. He's shown as a force that cannot be stopped, something that while he can fight for the good guys, at his core he is a monster. I love the Ragnorak movie, I'm not alone here, but after hearing hints about it prior to its release I genuinely thought it was going to be a Planet Hulk movie - showing the more "uncontrollable" side of Hulk - followed by a World War Hulk. I genuinely thought we'd get a phase after Thanos that had Hulk as the unstoppable villain which would have been an incredible and thrilling twist both for comic fans and MCU fans.

I'm not a comic book fan but I do recall enough from my uncle who was. The Hulk had to get his 1st cousin knocked up to have kids. Even as a kid, that grossed me out hearing my uncle talk about that when he was explaining to my brother and me the storylines of all the comic books he had.
Years ago one of the production team involved with the Ed Norton movie said that when they were writing the script, to keep it cost effective, a hulk movie needs to be about 70% Bruce and 30% Hulk, as that’s around the spot where costs start to become a major issue. Another issue is that the Hulk has never really had a epic comic book run…. He has had moments here and there, but his two major runs are basically Planet and World War Hulk, and those were basically 99% Hulk and Banner only making a fleeting appearance.
@@lore2458 Immortal Hulk was what basically kick started Hulks 2000's revival, before that he had not had a major comic book run like a lot of Marvel characters... his comic book history up to the 2000's is pretty bland.

It’s a little too late for this type of movie to be made because Bruce combined with the hulk but for a non-origin hulk story I think showing the struggle Bruce banner faces on a daily basis of fighting the urge and anger of turning into the hulk and then finally accepting what he is and giving into the hulk and the rage in an effort to protect people and do good. Throughout the course of all the Marvel movies we haven’t really seen the struggle and fear of the hulk that Bruce would face daily
After how the Russo brothers treated Hulk I went back and gained a true appreciation for what Ang Lee did with the character. He put care and thought into him, just not sure people were ready for that. Also love 2008 Hulk the best. Its just fun, the best design and feels connected to the t.v. show. Man always on the move.
on the whole, I think they managed to have a really successful show, one way or the other, without becoming gross, hackneyed, or banal - a rare feat, that, I'm sure, took a lot of work :)
After acquiring Mark Ruffalo it should’ve been a layup: 1) Make the damn movie 2) It should be a about original hulk, not professor / nerfed Hulk 3) No she Hulk. Just about Hulk. And maybe other existing Avengers characters and only a light touch.
I think they'd have to do a kaiju movie take where Hulk is the monster and Banner is the human side/drama. Think of Godzilla or Pacific Rim sort of plot devices.
I think a Hulk film needs to balance actikn with psychological drama. Something like Matt Reeves' The Batman, which is both a detective/superhero film and a psychological exploration of Batman's character. A Hulk film needs to be essentially a combination of The Fugitive (character who runs from the law tries to stop bad guys) and Moon Knight (a superhero whose struggles with dissociative udentity disorder and relationship with his alters are given a big amount of focus and exploration).
I want to see the Hulk movie that truly understands what the Hulk represents. In the comics at least, the Hulk wasn't just the symbol of testosterone and rage. The acting and the writting? Top notch? Who told you that lol after calling what marvels doing today mediocre? Bruh they have hulk hiding cars boxing gloves with more cgi monster fights in the middle of city. Wow real top notch. it’s just another cartoony looking movie with no real Stakes and decent acting at best. Edward Norton does not fit the character of hulk or any other superhero lol. There’s nothing great about it
@@vincentgray9235 what the MCU's been doing today is not mediocre. It's abysmal. And yeah, that scene with Hulk using the police car to make himself boxing gloves was badass and an awesome reference to the Ultimate Destruction video game.
@@antona.8659 badass? Maybe if you’re a twelve year old. From my view it’s corny and cartoony. Also makes no sense since cars don’t even phase a hulk might as well throw a can of soda lmao
Calling someone a 12 year old while arguing over a comic book movie is hilarious
Ang Lee made a great Hulk movie.
People might not like the cinematography or the CGI but in terms of story, it captured the psychology of character perfectly.
Meh
2004 hulk is underrated, the story line was mad, how you see his origin, his movements and powers etc. The cgi isnt even that bad for early 2000s.
Man I loved Ang Lee Hulk, especially the sound bite you picked out really resonated with me
The first hulk movie story is very beautiful raw and messy.
I LOVED the Ang Lee HULK! It is still one of my favorite movies in any genre.
The Incredible Hulk (2008) is an almost perfect Hulk movie to me. Hugely underrated MCU installment. What they did to him after that though..
I agree. I know many like to criticise the movie, but I genuinely like it and think it is an underrated gem in the MCU. I'll admit it is not as psychologically deep as the 2003 Ang Lee Hulk movie, but it works to show the duality between the physical raw power of the Hulk and Bruce Banner as a character. They really need to take the character back and remember what made the Hulk an iconic character, his rage, duality and mental conflict.
@@milkiassamuel780💯💯💯 it’s an underrated masterpiece never understood the hate
@@T3aseW1theasepeople like cringey meme and quip humor nowadays
Agree
Man, they really butchered him in endgame and so forth.
he's a pussy now
Your description of Ang Lees Hulk is so off, I'm shocked no one stopped this from going out.
Indeed.. He probably did the analysis by himself and just released the video to please the young audience of mcu fanboys
He did acted in Troy (2004), or Hanna (2011).
The 1970s hulk still had comic relief
@@kainlives7958 nothing wrong with comedy
@@RWSfan2025 ik, i like the comic relief
They need to take the Hulk-Skaar moments from World War Hulks comic run and make it into a father-son retrospective movie where Banner reconcile with his childhood trauma as a way to teach Skaar what it means to be a superhero and what it takes being a Hulk with what baggage it carried, along with him having anxieties about parenthood and rising to break the cycle of his abusive past. That'd be a whole family buffet of some capeshit film.
The Skaar in the Shehulk series was less than intimidating. They gotta show me he can be a threat and not a green Zach Morris
The best live-action Hulk we'll ever get, and faithful to the comics
The Incredible Hulk from 2008 will always be the best Hulk movie ever made, as far as I'm concerned.
My favourite Hulk scene is when Bruce first becomes the Hulk in the 2003 version and trashes the lab.
2003 hulk is the best one ever made. Most emotional depth of any Hulk.
I don't think, even today, CGI is good enough to truly bring the character to life. Ang Lee's was a pretty good movie with dire CGI, what followed were movies that weren't as good with better CGI. But there's still a disconnect between what you're seeing and full reality.
Hulk (2003) and The Incredible Hulk (2008) are both fire.
Hulk is like the Superman of Marvel. All powerful, with little to no weakness
The Ed Norton Hulk movie is a good Hulk movie. And it excites me that he was starting to learn to control it. Shame they reversed it with Ruffalo. Even if “I’m always angry.” Is cool… it ruined the whole breathing/meditation thing. They could’ve even done both.
To me Ang Lee's Hulk was the best version.
Only in Hollywood would making 100 million dollars be seen as a failure. Twice.
Edward Norton's Hulk was the Hulk we know and love
Not the Avengers' pet/comic relief
Hulk in the first avengers movie was at his peak.
Speak for yourself lol
@eliasbranch5383 Agreed. They missed the boat in Endgame not giving him redemption by fighting Thanos again but this time even more pissed off because Black Widow died. Instead they gave the flat-assed megabitch the scene instead. Totally whiffed on that one and has basically been just a weak little soy hulk since Ragnarock.
It wasn't a "Brady Bunch" style, it was to emulate comic book panels. How can yall not understand this
Pretty Much Ang Lee Did It Before The Spider-Verse Series Did.
5 years is a really long run for a comicbook TV show
Err, they did make make a good hulk movie called The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton. That version of Hulk was the best. Everything about the design and capturing Edwards Hulk is comic book masterpiece.
0:50 "only 5 years", that's longer than any Marvel Studios TV show except Agents of SHIELD.
I do.. Eric Banner
I was today old when I learnt that the Villian in Eric Banners movie was the Absorbing Man
I actually like the ang Lee hulk movie and I saw it in theaters but I can agree it would be more expensive to bring the the actual hulk to life cause of all it would take to create the character alone and professor hulk that showed up in endgame wasn’t even like by comic fans when the comics did it I doubt we see another hulk project any time soon not because of rights issues but cause it doesn’t feel like they want to address the elephant in the room and factor in the infinity saga characters that are still around at this point
The Ang Lee Hulk is a masterpiece especially for 2003
There's all kinds of debate back and forth between the '03 and '08 films, and what's been done with the character since, but none of that is the real problem.
I think the comic frame break-up in the Ang Lee movie was pretty cool.
I heard that Luo Ferrigno hates what the MCU has done to Hulk.
2:30 if you listen to the movie commentary Ang Lee explains that the Hulk design is based on a toddler
She-Hulk was 10 times wose than the 2008 Hulk movie.
Why, you don’t like watching She-Hulk twerk like a slut?
I'm convinced people just didn't watch the show because it was mostly pretty good. There were a few cringe, MCU moments but for the most part it was good
@beansfebreeze there were a few parts that was pretty cool and funny but I think the show was pretty bad from start to finish.
Nope
@@beansfebreezeit was ass i watched the full series and i wish i could unwatch it. Ang Lee's Hulk is still the best Hulk film, in my opinion.
The Hulk was treated so badly by every studio why can’t the Hulk be taken seriously
The Hulk & Wolverine are equally my favorites
The Incredible Hulk Animated Series is peak Hulk.
Voiced by Neal McDonough
1980s and 1990s animated shows were decent
@@kainlives7958 X-men, Amazing Spiderman were both A+ also!
Hulk 2003 was perfect in my eyes
I prefer the 2003 hulk but probably cus ut came out when u was a kid and the game hulk ultimate destruction was amazing!
While Ang Lee's Hulk is not perfect, I think it's underrated. I liked it.
The Incredible Hulk was a good hulk movie, enjoyable and showing the strength of the hulk
2:23 Wow you just straight up lied to everyone Ang Lee is a huge fan of the Hulk character if you watch the movie commentary he explains the creative choices behind the film atleast do your research before you lie tk your audience
Yes sir.. He's just an mcu fanboy who's just parroting things he was told, or he's just in denial.. That movie explains everything without even having to look into outside material, like comics, or previous Hulk adaptations.. And he's the closest we'll ever get to comics Hulk
What about immortal hulk
@@lore2458 Immortal Hulk was what basically kick started Hulks 2000's revival, before that he had not had a major comic book run like a lot of Marvel characters... his comic book history up to the 2000's is pretty bland.
Don’t agree with this at all. These studios are being cheap and lazy.
Dr strange , Spider-Man and etc cost way more than the hulk. I call bs.
Hulk had many epic comic runs
@@jasontodd1896 you are basically paying for a actor to do no acting, except be a cgi character for a movie that will be CGI heavy.
If you are going to go down that route you might as well do a cartoon movie
So they can make a dump truck full of SGI with Doctor Strange and Quantumania, but they can't recreate a fucking hospital incident?
I've been reading Hulk comics for 7 years and I'm caught up on his recent comics. Still waiting for #6 of his newest run. I thought of a story for the Hulk that I think would be very cool to see on the big screen.
The 2008 Incredible Hulk is by FAR the best we ever gotten, and the closest to truly capture the essence of the Hulk, it's story and characters and is also a pretty underrated MCU Movie
Edward Norton: Rewrites the majority of a garbage script, on his own
Marvel: We want someone with more creative spirit... meaning someone who will exhibit no creative spirit and won't challenge our writers
Right. Don't give him rewrite authority if you want to complain.
Kevin Fiegi first messed up when he let go of Edward Norton
After how the Russo brothers treated Hulk I went back and gained a true appreciation for what Ang Lee did with the character. He put care and thought into him, just not sure people were ready for that. Also love 2008 Hulk the best. Its just fun, the best design and feels connected to the t.v. show. Man always on the move.
2008 hulk is great
on the whole, I think they managed to have a really successful show, one way or the other, without becoming gross, hackneyed, or banal - a rare feat, that, I'm sure, took a lot of work :)
They should look at the success of the Monsterverse and do that with hulk. Everyone would love to watch an all action version of a hulk movie.
After acquiring Mark Ruffalo it should’ve been a layup:
1) Make the damn movie
2) It should be a about original hulk, not professor / nerfed Hulk
3) No she Hulk. Just about Hulk. And maybe other existing Avengers characters and only a light touch.
Actually. The first episode of the series, which was a TV Movie, aired in November 1977.
Disney nerfed him.
I think they'd have to do a kaiju movie take where Hulk is the monster and Banner is the human side/drama. Think of Godzilla or Pacific Rim sort of plot devices.
The Toronto Sun put the first two Hulk movies perfectly: "If Hulk was reactionary, than Incredible Hulk was action.''
I think adapting The Immortal Hulk would work incredibly well if current day MCU had the nerve to do a hard risk like that anymore.
Incredible Hulk (2008) was the best Hulk movie/Hulk interpretation ever, period.
