This sole reason is why this is my top favorite show. Once they’re together, they’re together. And then the show moves on. They don’t dwell on their relationship or focus on it much.
Shows turn to romance when they run out of ideas but this seemed deliberate and it was implemented in the series flawlessly making it part of the ongoing story and not just a gimmick to keep audiences interested. This and the not in your face progressive approach of social issues were two of the writers' greatest achievements...
Raymond Holt might be one of the best characters ever written. And everytime he and Madeline Wuntch met up, it was magical. “If you’re here, who’s guarding hades?”
I always liked the fact that Jake is the goofy, silly, or dumb character that delivers much of the comedy, yet still was a good detective. This bought the character a lot a space to move around in.
I relate to it. I am always good at my job, whatever that job is, but always try to bring the humor. I feel it makes a more comfortable workplace environment. It helps to get through the boring parts. But I stay away from the sexist humor that was standard on B99 until Jake and Amy got together.
A bit like DiNozzo in NCIS. He's constantly quoting movies, making sports references, getting smacked in the head, but ultimately, he's bloody good at what he does.
One of my favorite thing about b99 was Jake and Charles relationship. At first it looked like Charles was just a Jake fanboy and Jake would find him annoying but that's not it at all. They're actual best friends and they're friendship has so many sweet moments.
That’s one thing I always loved - in any other sitcom cool guy & nerd friendship the cool guy always made fun of the nerd, leaving you wondering why they’re even friends. Whereas, Jake respected Charles, and they had fun together. There was one episode where he acknowledged that even when they’re being lame, it’s awesome.
Yeah they have so many moments where the both of them are just being unapologetically dorky together like the hunch song and who can for get “The Man Sprinkler” 😭
Why B99 works? Because the writers treated the characters as actual humans and not caricatures. It's a shame this show doesn't get as much credit for all the things (humour, diversity, characters, relationships) like it should have. Which is why thank you for making this video!
@@soradev3254 thats because community is a satire of other sitcom tropes. The characters always maintain their core traits but everything else is open for change depending on the writers needs
I think one of the best things was that it was obvious Jake and Amy would end up together, but they do both go date other people and it's never treated as a "oh I'm waiting for the other person to be available" Like when Jake dated Sophia he took it seriously, he really liked her and he was crushed when it ended
They did an exceptional job at Amy and Jake's relationship. Them becoming a couple is timed perfectly. Their journey is long enough to see the build up of their relationship as co-workers but not made too long that it becomes dragging. Their fights as a couple aren't too complicated and is easily solved in one episode. They don't have co-dependency, they're both individualistic and they can both function in separate scenes. They're literally the best on-screen couple.
They happened to realize they liked each other, but the timing wasn't working out, and they were able to be mature about it. They genuinely tried to support the other person's relationship until they ended naturally. And only then circled back to being interested in each other, and then exploring where that could go. Even as a couple, they always supported each other's goals and needs
What I love most about the show is the kind of meta humor. Jokes or skits that would go uncommented in other more traditional sitcoms are acknowledged by the other characters and reacted to in a very human way. Where elsewhere the viewer is laughing about a character beeing goofy in a totally unplausible way, here we laugh at Jake telling Charles "stop it, you are acting wierd"
And I liked that Charles wasn't just a goofy weirdo: he was also an effective investigator and often a very sweet friend. Unless cooking was involved, then he'd turn into a monster. I think Terry is a favourite of mine as he's a good example of (mostly) healthy masculinity.
YES. This is why so many comedy shows fall short for me, but this one doesn’t. Because the comedy has to be grounded. Otherwise it’s just “lol haha so random” and treats that as normal, where absurdist humor relies on acknowledging the absurdity itself.
This I agree. The comedy in b99 just feels natural, characters react naturally in every jokes. One of my pet peeves in some comedy is the character's lack of awareness especially in scenes where it's getting too weird. B99 didn't do that. They roasted and made fun of each other's weirdness, like a group of friends in real life.
More of Hollywood need to look at Brooklyn Nine Nine as a way to do diversity correctly. A majority of the main cast are actors of color and yet that is never the sole characteristic that makes these characters who they are. Yeah there are episodes that talk about identity, difficulties of being who they are, but that is never the sole purpose to their characters. Terry is an anxious sergeant who can't control his team with blends of liking non masculine things yet hilariously being as strong and fit as he is. Amy is a neurotic perfectionist who because she was the only daughter in a family of brothers always feels like she has to be more than she is. Rosa is a tough as nails and near cold blooded woman who doesn't really understand the point of emotions but it never stops her from still being there for her friends when they need it. And Captain Holt is a stone faced man who will never smile and yet he's commonly seen as the best part of the show because he's smart as a whip and has a sense of humor that brings out some of the best moments on the show. And in addition to that, him being gay is never the sole aspect of his character and is treated like a normal aspect without the show begging for a compliment. Yes it is acknowledged that Holt was discriminated against in his career because he was black and gay, but it still didn't stop him from using his amazing intellect and sharp thinking to get where he is in his career, which is why everyone at the precinct loves and respects him. In addition to that, his marriage to Kevin is incredibly wholesome and the two feel like a very realistic couple with their own problems and things to work through. Each of the characters I've mentioned are all integrated into the show in a way that's smart, well thought out and where the show cannot work unless each of them are there. All of these characters are so great because the writers were smart enough to actually make them matter to the show. If you want to add more diverse actors to your shows, then that's fine and is a good thing. But you still have to give them good characters and not make it so lazy. Look at Brooklyn Nine Nine as an example of that.
Exactly this, it really shows that people want simply good writing/ideas and it doesn't matter where are you from nor what colour/sexual preferences you are.
Exactly this. I think they managed to find that fine line where they touched sensitive subjects while not making everything about it. I liked that a lot of Kevin and Holt's bits were not really related to them being gay. I guess the line works differently for everybody and some of my gay friends would like it better if there were full on gay every episode, but for me b99 was perfect.
I dated a girl who damn near demanded that when gays or minorities were in movies/shows they should be extra highlighted and raised up and i could never get her to see that if you want gay couples to be seen as normal, show them as normal! make all of their interactions normal and not over the top and don't highlight it. when you go over the top that's when it comes off as weird and that weird gets attached to w/e was a part of it. great example is that stupid line from the dark phoenix movie where they had jennifer lawrence (mystique) comment about changing the team name to X-WOMEN or some nonsense. that doesn't make a girl power statement, it makes the girls look dumb. now go to iron man 2 where we get introduced to black widow, she suits up, goes into a room and absolutely lays waste to like 10 guys while happy is busy fighting one. no comment, she leaves and moves on with the mission and she looks badass because that scene makes it seem like that's just her and who she is.
I remember watching the first episode and being amazed that Jake and Charles’ friendship wasn’t one-sided. It would have been so easy to make Jake the typical cool guy who treats his “best friend” like crap for a few easy jokes at his expense, but the show makes their friendship mutual. Yes, Charles definitely goes over-the-top and is too involved in Jake’s life; however, it’s funny rather than pathetic.
I also like that when Boyle does go over the top Jake reasserts his boundries. He doesn't do what other shows would do where Jake just let's it continue despite being clearly uncomfortable.
Boyle still is a bit pathetic, but that's just one of his characteristics that he's proud of. Meanwhile, Jake does like the lime light, but he really does treat Boyle as a bestie and values his opinion. I also loved that time and time again, Charles shows he does good, diligent police work and is a good detective still, even if he doesn't make super cool flying hunches like Jake.
Jake's evolution throughout the whole seasons is one of the best things of this show. I love that, while he is still very goofy and childish, he learns how to grow up and quits the job that he loves so much so Amy can work on her career and he can be the father he didn't have. When I saw that... dude 🥲While sometimes trying to be very "masculine" he's also very sensitive, I mean, he's the one who cries at his wedding. I just love Jake 🫶🏽
You mean like the character development they completely torpedoed? When they destroyed his character development by having him wrongfully arrest someone without following proper procedure and without proper evidence? Something he would NEVER have done especially after wrongfully being arrested himself. Then committing the act of overstepping and abusing power that Rosa has been guilty of for the entire course of the show. Did you also like they turned Terry into the Koolaid man in the final episode, and turned him into a meme who's only purpose was to run through walls and that was his wrap up. You have to be joking by thinking that the last season made an ounce of sense. They destroyed a character to push a message. Having a message is fine as long as it fits into the story and doesn't destroy the integrity of the show. The show was terrible after Jake and Amy's wedding and ceased being about meaningful characters and resorted to cheap laughs.
@@randomnobody9229 It really is just a silly goofy show. I understand not liking the way the creators took it but its not something to be so angry over. yes in your opinion the last few seasons werent that good so then just re watch the first few. its ok to not like something but that doesnt mean someone else can't like it. take a breath, its alright
@@randomnobody9229i mean, he did arrest someone without sufficient cause in the first season with similar reasoning comapred to the last season, it was just that this time around he was wrong, which he mostly would never be about a case throughout the show. And even if he was, someone would correct him before the mistake was made, or the mistake would be surprisingly helpful to the case. Last season simply showed that he could make mistakes, and that the police is flawed and cruel, not goofy and good willingly like jake
@@randomnobody9229 but she does understand what it is like to be a minority, and not only that, but what it feels to be discriminated against or searched without sufficient cause due to not being white, male or straight jake, even though is surrounded by people who may have gone through that, doesnt truly understand because he never went through such systemic discrimination, and even constantly messes up on his job and either get his mistakes fixed or has a correct huntch, seen MANY episodes on this one, it just didnt happen, he was wrong and, when he could have gotten away with it, he decided not to
Charles being hopelessly in love with Rosa is hard to watch on the firsts episodes but I'm glad they got over it. It felt forced and was never going to work
I like how quickly they went “okay moving on”. Because Charles and Rosa are great characters. But they’d be crap together. Jake and Amy were much better match.
In their podcast, the writers mentioned that they forgot they have written Charles being in love with Rosa in the first season. They also mentioned it was a mistake on their part lol.
@@Madcattus Interesting. I'm glad they forgot because I liked Rosa's bisexuality (Loved the episode with her mom and dad) and Charles's weird love life. It suited the characters way better than trying to force them together or trying for a "will they or won't they?" type of thing. I'm glad they went 'no, they won't.".
This show was F**king genius. I'm so bored of the stereotypes and I'm glad B99 went out of it's way to cast the opposite. Each character was brilliant. Even the series antagonist (Doug Judy) wasn't your typical "villain", but instead brought a constant laughter in the way he foiled Andy Samberg's character. Naturally, I'm watching it again.
Brooklyn 99 was a very political show, but never ostensibly one and never felt like pandering just for the sake of it. The show had a message and knew how to tell it.
Agreed, all of a sudden Holt as a captain has difficulty with racism. The guy endured it through most of his career and was already a cop when Rodney King happened. And it was kind of weird to also portray this very anti-union message for a show that is far more `left` leaning in its portrayals.
@@samstrachan9754 While I don't love the final season, it's fair to point out they were in an impossible situation after George Floyd and I respect them for at least trying to figure out a tonal balance.
Peralta didn't "get lucky" in the 1st cold open. He got here first and looked for a working camera. This is why we know it won't be our usual show : from the first scene until the last, all cops are showed to be good no matter how idiot they act, including the main character. This way, the department seems believable and lovable despite all the crazy stuff. We want the best for them because not only they're funny, but they're damn good at it AND their job.
And cause its the 1 teddy bear in a electronics store. Jake being "childish" must've seen it when he first entered while Amy being the "good detective" was focusing on the damage and witness
@@allanorme2093 Amy was also being a good detective, you can't know how much you're looking for without knowing the damage. Jake arriving early and seeing the teddy bear is hilarious to think about though 😂
lol even Hitchcock and scully were decent cops, they just did their share of work in the 80s and wanted to chill. I like how they were shown to still be competent tho
@@allanorme2093 "Good detectives" who follow the procedure are required to ground and balance out the quirky detectives like Jake. Idk if you've even watched the show if you think the rest of them weren't good detectives.
You nailed it, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is great for a bunch of these reasons. I remember an interview with Stephanie Beatriz where she talked about how she'd gone in and interviewed for the show, and then she heard that Melissa Fumero had been cast as Amy and Stephanie thought that was it for her, because there was no way a major show would cast two latina women as main characters
@@acookie7548That’s super sad. Thankfully it only took what three-four MINUTES of the characters in the same room before anyone watching would never confuse Amy Santiago and Rosa Diaz. The writing on this show was amazing, and the cast is top tier.
From the very first episode I instantly knew it was going to be something different and special. And it's funny because we were trained by sitcom cliches to expect certain things, yet Brooklyn Nine-Nine successfully subverted every single one. I was 100% sure we Jake and Amy's relationship was going to be "will they or will they won't" through most of the show; then they get together and I was already expecting it hit the typical bumps and constantely break up and get back together. I am so glad the showrunners were smart enough to not slip into those pitfalls that dooms most sitcoms. Jake and Amy actually having a functional relationship is incredibly wholesome and satisfying; the conflict of their relationship is trying to find time for themselves between work, and it's never played like the end of the world. And the show never makes their relationship a focus. They get together. they're happy, and the show goes on with other themes.
The episode where they hung out together on the roof for a stake out was so cute. And then when Jake brings it back up later as the moment he fell in love with Amy, I nearly died from the cuteness
This show worked on so many levels. Among family members and friends this is the one show that I’ve had a 100% approval among people of different tastes. So easy to watch and rewatch.
This show was the perfect amount of comedy and what some people call "wokeness". Where other comedy sitcoms steer clear of controversial subjects like racism and homophobia, I love that B99 was able to take them on in a very down to Earth way. I think that alone makes it a really important show for our generation. Not to mention it is just hilarious in a not in your face funny kind of way.
It walked a fine line between genuinely educational and cringeworthy wokeness. I loved it when it was the former, but dropped off from it when it got too far into the latter.
@@SniperKing5i can't think of a specific topic or moment but definitely the last season kinda in general was a bit too literal and like,, idk it felt like it was trying too hard
@tata-yo9idexactlyy, i honestly really like how they handled real world issues before the pandemic (i.e. terry getting profiled), after it happened and all the stuff about police brutality they just got too on the nose
I instantly loved the show. It was one of the few for me that got better each season. You don't find that often. It's rare. If you exclude the final season the show was amazing. But even so, even if the final season wasn't as good as the rest, at least in my opinion, the final episodes of the show were amazing.
For the final season they felt pressured to include covid and Blm stuff as a police show. Just bad timing. Even thwn i dont mind (even appreciate) shows showing that stuff for a couple episodes but the writters made the mistake of making the whole season that too a last season tootally based on a real world event. Literally changed Rosas character ending for it. Would be better if they did it more like superstore
My thoughts exactly! I've seen every episode dozens of times (used to sleep to it when it was on Hulu). That last season wasn't awful, but the characters were reduced to almost cartoon versions of themselves. Otherwise, excellent television!
Why Boyle is not mentioned? I'm sure many can relate to him as a worker, husband, father and especially as a friend. And to be honest he had some of the best and funniest scenes on the series..
Adoption is not controversial enough to warrant a mention in this video. Just being a latina straight policewoman isn't controversial enough either so this video omitted both Amy and Boyle. This video kinda reminded me why I didn't enjoy the series past season 5. It nailed why it was good at the start and up to season 5 though. It was the moderation in which it included controversial topics, where they didn't encapsulate the whole character's identity. This theme of the show was lost somewhere along the way.
I loved that all the characters are multi-faceted. Yes, they all have their tropes, but they are not only their main trope, they have personalities, multiple emotions and different parts of themselves. It really makes them feel like real people and not just sitcom characters
I loved the show through its entire run. And I really held on to the point of "subversion", cause this show subverted a lot of expectations. Look no further than the numerous cold openings that I still remember fondly. Everyone knows the "Backstreet Boys" one, where Jake humorously uses "I want it that way" to ID a perp, before we find out the guy killed someone. Charles dressing up as a turkey and gobbling it up before learning he had to inform some family members of a dead missing relative. The one that always stuck out was saving Private Pidgeon and getting it out of the station, where Jake has this Rube Goldburg plan to scare the bird out, before immediately sucking it into a fan, feathers and pigeon everywhere.
B99 Very quickly became a comfort show for me. I cried when it ended and Andre's recent passing made that ending permanent. I will forever love this show.
Brooklyn Nine Nine is one of my favorite shows. I adored how it approached not just the main characters and main relationships and friendships but it developed the minor roles so well that you thoroughly knew who they were whether it was Charle's ex wife or the Vulture as well as developing the minor relationships just well like Jake and Kevin Cozner. It's another quirky show from two writers who treat their characters like human beings and let that drive the story.
The thing I like most about B99 is that the characters are very real in ways that other shows neglect. They have hobbies and passions unique to them and the rest of the group might find the hobbies themselves boring but enjoy and admire the passion that comes with those hobbies. People may not love Amy's organisation skills and hobbies for their own past time but they enjoy seeing her be the best they know at that hobby. They might find a lot of Charle's food choices and palette gross but they also know he is the best cook among them and knows the best place to have dinner. They are hobbies that real people have and the writter's don't shy away from creating characters that love hobbies that might be seen as boring or uninteresting because that's how people in real life act. They are characters written with defining features that have nothing to do with how they connect with others, their sexuality or relationships and it's refreshing to see.
One of the most interesting relationships to me was Boyle and Jake. Jake is stereotypically cool and Boyle is older, weirder, and not as a cool. But Jake is often a very good friend to Boyle and secretly seems to enjoy a big chunk of the stuff they do together despite it being different from what he would normally be associated with. And Boyle is a good investigator, despite his often intense oddness. Tbf, every character gets a chance to shine on B99. The ending was bittersweet; you could tell the show runners wanted to end the show in the wake of the BLM movement and the increasing awareness of police brutality. Its a shame but they tried hard to cap off everything with a few good stories, and then a bittersweet ending for Jake and the team.
This is why I cannot finish and never watched the last season. It is always breaking my heart knowing one of my favorite shows ended along with its Captain. Rest In Peace Andre Braugher/Captain Raymond Holt.
you're missing out big time. The last season is probably one of the best. They had a lot to say before finishing for good and they did it just brilliantly. Cant think of a better way to finish, really
Other than S8E1, S8 was quite solid IMHO. I enjoyed it quite a bit more than S7 in some areas. Not to mention the final two parter heist was great, unfortunately Charles didn't win.
One of the oddest things about B99: the cast is very diverse, but they come in four very-similar pairs. Two black men in leadership, two Hispanic women as serious detectives, two younger white men as silly detectives, and two older white men as lazy dead-weight. Only Gina stands as a main character without a clear counterpart.
While i dont think he is her counterpart at all, the way gina and pimento bounced off each other on the hunt for the earrings, on the day of his and rosas wedding... it made me go "damn, they have sth in common that i cannot pinpoint" prolly being crazy and confident and superstitious.
@@AJ-ms2pmtheir common ground was unpredictability. Gina could not be topped with the pizzazz while Pimiento just has loads of ridiculous quirks ranging from mild to extra dark
What got a lot of people into the show was the “I Want It That Way” cold open. But from there, exploring the show, seeing the characters develop…beyond amazing. ❤️
Another subtle twist in the pilot was that Peralta underestimated Holt because he became a captain at a late age, so he didn't respect his rules because he was sure he knew better. When he knew he managed to be a captain DESPITE being gay and black in a time where prejudice was more common, it made him realize that the man knew what he was doing, and that Holt had to be really good to even be ACCEPTED as a captain. Also, Jake being the last to connect the dots was a humble reminder that while he's good, he doesn't have all the answers, so he needs to work with others, and from that episode he always wore a tie in the station.
I admit I didn't think I would like the show just from seeing the promos for it, but then I watched the second season and fell in love with the show and became a fan
@@ceesvanrijckevorsel8454This comment is embarrassing lmao. You're wrong for trying to correct them. They're right. It depends whether you pronounce it spelled out or not. If you're not smart enough to correct others, don't try lmao.
The best thing abt Brooklyn 99 is the relationship between the characters .they all support and help each other out and see each other as family. Also the message that imperfections are beautiful .very single character in b99 has their own merits and their flaws.they teach us to accept and embrace the imperfections in life and be thankful of our talents
I agree I thought it was gonna suck . I’m a psychiatrist and not even joking I was a resident on nights and this was on in the patients common room and the patient swore this was hilarious and if I wasn’t busy to check it out for a few minutes. I was on the floor I went home and binged the entire seasons that were out at that point. No regrets
A diverse show that didn't shove the diversity down our throats, nor did it use the diversity as a crutch. Every actor is cast perfectly. Not enough shows like this exist.
Stephanie Beatriz originally auditioned for the role of Amy, but she lost out on the role to Melissa Fumero, who was basically perfect for the role. The directors still liked Beatriz, and said they might have a role for her, but she figured she'd never hear back because typically shows would only cast one Latina character. To her surprise, they gave her the role of "Rosa" (formerly "Megan") and she absolutely killed it in that role.
i honestly can’t count how many times i have watched B99. the amount of rewatches is second only to The Good Place (Parks and Rec is a close third, though)
Every show created (or co-created) by Schur is a little masterpiece: Parks and Rec, B99 and The Good Place will always have a special place in my heart. Except for Rutherford Falls... Meh.
I loved it from the start and it kept me interested because the writing seemed to actually care about the characters. All characters, especially Jakes, had great character growth without fundamentally changing the character itself. Jake and Amy’s relationship was also refreshing because once they got together, they were together. No off and on again and were left alone to mature the relationship and let us in on different milestones in it
I remember not enjoying the pilot at all, and didn't continue the show for a long time. It had been running for a few seasons before I took it up after seeing so much praise for it online, and am glad that I did!
One of my fav shows, still play on repeat. One of the only shows' in recent years I can think of , that majority of the characters are likeable and can be rooted for, with no question. love love love it!
I think one of the best things about Holt is that being gay is an important part of his character, but not his defining characteristic. He’s not “the gay character”, but it’s also not something hidden in the background to be ignored.
As a gay man, Captain Holt was a refreshing character to watch! not just the typically flamboyant gay caricature, but his relationship with his husband that was low key very very sweet - in their own intellectual way. RIP Andre
Honestly, being in the UK and not watching SNL or seeing the trailers, I just saw it as "Oh, the main guy from TheLonelyIsland has a comedy show, sweet". And then because I watched House as a kid I instantly recognised Andre and knew I had to watch it then never stopped watching it
What sold the show for me, was the first time i had actually ever heard of it, which was the clips of the Backstreet Boys Cold Open. I looooved that clip so much that I eventually sought out the show and then binged the hell out of it. I loved it sooo much. I really appreciated how they treated Amy and Rosa, and I loved Holt and Terry with my whole heart. Peralta and Charles were an amazing duo that I didn't expect to actually be best friends. I lovelovelove this show
My fiancé and I just started watching this a few weeks ago. We'd avoided it for a pretty long time, expecting a dumb show like Reno 911 or something. We were immediately hooked, and it has quickly become one of our favorite shows.
That pilot episode is easily one of the best pilots I have ever seen. Sets up the show perfectly. I was hooked from the start. Comedies usually take a season to find its grip, and character dynamics. B99 was an exception to that and that first season really set the bar high.
I also loved how each pairing of characters (i.e. Jake-Amy, Jake-Holt, Jake-Charles, Jake-Rosa, Jake-Terry) had a long-term arc, and in each case was delightful to follow and actually relate to. The flattest set of arcs was probably Hitchcock and Scully and their relationship to the others. Even that worked perfectly because that was the exception, not the rule. And them being so one-dimensional (though even that's not entirely true) made them a unique comic relief within a show that's already a comedy.
I judged this show so hard when I saw the trailers. I almost didn't give it a chance, but it quickly became one of my favorites shows of all time. I literally just binged it again over the weekend break.
when i saw the first episode i immediatelly wasnt interested because I didn't really like andy's humour, but then I heard about the development of the relationships and gave it a try and today it's one of my favorite series exactly because of the portatrying of relations. each one of them and the depiction of the characters are precious and we can see how much they learn from each other
Another thing Brooklyn Nine Nine did brilliantly was that when the "main" couple (that was hinted at from the very beginning) finally got together there were no break ups, no on and off. They just got together, and if there was a problem, they worked through it like healthy functioning adults.
I was skeptical because of Andy Samberg but watched it for Andre Braugher and Terry Crews. Immediately fell in love with the show after seeing the pilot.
That was an excellent analysis and a beautiful tribute. I like to watch a bit of BNN every few days, just because it makes me happy. The characters are brilliant. I am writing this since the death of Captain Holt and watching it now is bittersweet. Andre played my favourite character to perfection. Edit: I forgot to add that it was my sons who recommended this show to me when I complained there was nothing good to watch.
one of my favorite exchanges is when Terry is scared of doing something (i forget what) and he tries to get holt to do it, playing the kid card. Holt responds about the gay thing and terry says "are you really playing the gay card right now?" and holt says "YAASS QUEEN" and throws him the keys.
I love the way B99 was able to deliver top notch co,Dey, without punching down. It demonstrated that you can be funny while being respectful. And it was more than just funny- the characters were deeply lovable and the show could be very moving at times.
Some new feature where when subbing is mentioned the sub button glows. I think the like button does too. Pretty sure it just listens to the audio but who knows.
I remember seeing the trailer and being genuinely worried that it was a bit base; but gave it a go anyway and was hooked very quickly. It helped that the first 2 episodes were shown together IIRC
Best subversion for me is the show actually showing a healthy functioning main relationship and not making them on again/off again.
I really love that about the show.
This sole reason is why this is my top favorite show. Once they’re together, they’re together. And then the show moves on. They don’t dwell on their relationship or focus on it much.
Same with Carla and Turk in scrubs
Same I was pleasantly surprised about that, turns out you can have a funny sitcom with consistently likeable characters
Shows turn to romance when they run out of ideas but this seemed deliberate and it was implemented in the series flawlessly making it part of the ongoing story and not just a gimmick to keep audiences interested. Raymond Holt might be one of the best characters ever written.
And everytime he and Madeline Wuntch met up, it was magical.
“If you’re here, who’s guarding hades?”
The episode where Wuntch dies is golden.
Look, Gina. Is that a talking raisin?
Oh hi Madeline Didn't see you there, thought you were an old leather chair
"Ah Madeline, you've aged"
Booooooone!!
I always liked the fact that Jake is the goofy, silly, or dumb character that delivers much of the comedy, yet still was a good detective. This bought the character a lot a space to move around in.
This is true, and also applies to Boyle and arguably to Amy.
I relate to it. I am always good at my job, whatever that job is, but always try to bring the humor. I feel it makes a more comfortable workplace environment. It helps to get through the boring parts. But I stay away from the sexist humor that was standard on B99 until Jake and Amy got together.

One of my favorite thing about b99 was Jake and Charles relationship. At first it looked like Charles was just a Jake fanboy and Jake would find him annoying but that's not it at all. They're actual best friends and they're friendship has so many sweet moments.
Not to mention that Charles was depicted and a good detective too.
And Jake & Scully. Everyone was a detective because they deserved it.
@@just_sadhana the flashback of Jake and Scully was pure gold.
Yeah they have so many moments where the both of them are just being unapologetically dorky together like the hunch song and who can for get “The Man Sprinkler” 😭
Bole ruins every scene he's in
Why B99 works? Because the writers treated the characters as actual humans and not caricatures. It's a shame this show doesn't get as much credit for all the things (humour, diversity, characters, relationships) like it should have. Which is why thank you for making this video!
You're so damn right and spot on. A show that actually show how working life is so hard, overtime, outrank bullying, etc.
It's crazy that community also works but it does the exact opposite, it purposely writes its characters like caricatures
@@soradev3254 thats because community is a satire of other sitcom tropes. The characters always maintain their core traits but everything else is open for change depending on the writers needs
Not sure the “not caricatures” praise applies to Scully, Hitchcock, or the Vulture.
Or frankly even Charles or Amy.
I partially disagree. Boyle and Gina were caricatures.
I think one of the best things was that it was obvious Jake and Amy would end up together, but they do both go date other people and it's never treated as a "oh I'm waiting for the other person to be available"
Like when Jake dated Sophia he took it seriously, he really liked her and he was crushed when it ended
i really loved that!
Absolutely. It was never a case of "I'm waiting for the other to be single." Their relationship was superbly written
Yes, exactly! @@Nancy-jc4bv

And it's way better then having a laugh track that permanetly damages your hearring playing every 5 seconds.
Quirky guy: OMG GUYS LOOK AT ME IM SO QUIRKY.
Audience: [cricket noises]
Normal guy: Dude, stop, you're annoying us.
Audience: HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
God damn that’s the best explanation for how diversity should be incorporated I’ve ever seen. Well done
Took the words right out of my mouth.
The thing, Jake is also a total nerd. Just about other things than Charles.
I also like that when Boyle does go over the top Jake reasserts his boundries. He doesn't do what other shows would do where Jake just let's it continue despite being clearly uncomfortable.
Started funny at first, but Boyle's obsession with Jake and Amy's personal lives got creepier the more I thought about it.
Boyle still is a bit pathetic, but that's just one of his characteristics that he's proud of. Meanwhile, Jake does like the lime light, but he really does treat Boyle as a bestie and values his opinion. I also loved that time and time again, Charles shows he does good, diligent police work and is a good detective still, even if he doesn't make super cool flying hunches like Jake.
this@@Nancy-jc4bv

Brooklyn 99 was a very political show, but never ostensibly one and never felt like pandering just for the sake of it. The show had a message and knew how to tell it.
I think your're right, other than the last season. It felt as if it was trying to hard for them to push a political message.
At the start, yes. But the last 1-2 seasons pushed it too far.
@@janvisser4132 yes I agree. Last season wasn't even much funny.

I read somewhere they specifically styled their hair differently (straight vs curly) so as to differentiate their characters as much as possible
I heard that too which is awful but I’m so happy they were able to both work together on Brooklyn 99
And then when Jake brings it back up later as the moment he fell in love with Amy, I nearly died from the cuteness
see this is why blockbuster's eliza and timmy weren't as likeable 😭 the will they-won't they thing like pining but also seeing other people
This show worked on so many levels. Among family members and friends this is the one show that I’ve had a 100% approval among people of different tastes. So easy to watch and rewatch.
Captain Holt is one of the best characters ever written, and the actor was genius
You should look for the word "genius" on the dictionary. Mayble you'll stop making a fool out of yourself!
@@TheSinlessAssassincould you give examples of what you found cringeworthy? Personally i think that they handled the themes well
@@SniperKing5i can't think of a specific topic or moment but definitely the last season kinda in general was a bit too literal and like,, idk it felt like it was trying too hard
@tata-yo9idexactlyy, i honestly really like how they handled real world issues before the pandemic (i.e. terry getting profiled), after it happened and all the stuff about police brutality they just got too on the nose
The only good amount of wokeness is none

Rest in peace Andre Braugher 🙏🕊️
RIP Andre, truly one of the best characters on TV, you will be missed
Captain Holt and the Father son relationship between himself and Peralta is the heart of this story for me.
i love character's reactions to jokes. when they dont wait for an audience to laugh or cheer the characters seem much more real
RIP André Braugher 😢
B99 was a great show. Always with surprises and some nice character developments even though it was a comedy series! :)
They are characters written with defining features that have nothing to do with how they connect with others, their sexuality or relationships and it's refreshing to see.
b99 supported me through the pandemic. I am sad that it's concluded but this show will forever hold a special place in my heart.
I'll admit the last season isn't as good as the others but the finale was great.(Rip Andre)

What got a lot of people into the show was the “I Want It That Way” cold open. But from there, exploring the show, seeing the characters develop…beyond amazing. ❤️
Forever our Captain, RIP Andre.

Rip captain holt, may he rest in piece
Today is a sad day. RIP Captain Holt/ Andre B. 💙💙💙
I lovelovelove this show
Rest in Peace, Mr Braugher
Jake peralta is my spirit animal
I need to start a mail tub
ive re watched this ten times might just have to rewatch it again rip andre
RIP Captain Holt... You will forever be our captain.
RIP Andre Braugher ... he was taken too suddenly and the world is a little bit sadder now.
Nice video. RIP Andre Braugher
RIP Captain Raymond Holt ☹❤🕊
Damn, R.I.P Captain. Nine Nine!
Seeing all these b99 videos after hearing the news about Andre Braugher makes me wanna rewatch… again… Nine nine ❤
They just got together, and if there was a problem, they worked through it like healthy functioning adults.
the show is so kind. we need more of this these days
I was skeptical because of Andy Samberg but watched it for Andre Braugher and Terry Crews. Immediately fell in love with the show after seeing the pilot.
Same here. My only regret is that it took me so long. I started binge-watching it at the start of the pandemic.
Raymond Holt made the show for me, best character, made me laugh so much
Rest in peace Andre Braugher
yeah, ikr its so sad
never gonna see a show cast while watching it
That was an excellent analysis and a beautiful tribute.
This is such an amazing show and they couldn’t have cast it better. Rest in peace Andre 🕊️❤
I love the way B99 was able to deliver top notch co,Dey, without punching down. It demonstrated that you can be funny while being respectful. And it was more than just funny- the characters were deeply lovable and the show could be very moving at times.
0:44 saw the subbutton shine wtf
Some new feature where when subbing is mentioned the sub button glows. I think the like button does too. Pretty sure it just listens to the audio but who knows.
@@tylerday1545I think it uses the transcript to match up the word with the shine
It's ridiculous how happy Brooklyn 99 makes me. I've watched again and again and it still makes me smile.
RIP Andre Braugher 💔
I remember seeing the trailer and being genuinely worried that it was a bit base; but gave it a go anyway and was hooked very quickly. It helped that the first 2 episodes were shown together IIRC
I liked that Jake seemed more mature in later seasons, yet he still seemed like Jake. Nice writing.
