I laughed that the blonde girl was afraid of Dalgleish when in a later episode a young man pours his heart out to him and throws his face into Dalgleish's chest and he bursts into tears as the big man comforts him.
What amazes myself is how the two of them find their way around those country lanes without a local bobby in the car. No Sat Nav in those days , just a divining rod peed on by a dog.
I wonder if they chose John Vine as Dalgleish's assistant just to make Dalgleish look even taller. I notice they shoot "up" at him a lot, to stress his height.
I think 6'4'' is tall. How tall are you qhsperson? Shoot up at him...like looking up his nose shots? 35:21 in ep 5 could bethought of as ''shoot''up'' at him''...but, I did not see ''a lot'' of that. So, how tall do you think they were trying to make him seem?
I looked up his height at previous episode. He is 6’33”. When Brenda says he’s rather scary, they film from below, so he looks taller and he’s looking down on her. When he sits next to her, it’s less scary for her cos now they’re of equal height.
But it's ridiculous that something so life-changing -- and so character-defining -- isn't explored when it happens, or really at all in any of the 10 Marsden adaptations, which ran from 1983-1998 -- that's a long time! Lazy/bad writing.
J J Exploring life changing events was more the job of the Soaps in those days. Neighbours and Eastenders, Bold, and such. These were based on crime as a theme series. And PD James was excentric that way. Lots of the characters are al stiff upper lip. Plus, it would make Dalgliesh seem weak. sth.like that maybe.
betty boop -- I was a young adult in the 1980s and I remember the decade's TV shows well enough to know that that isn't accurate. Think of all the plays that were broadcast on TV in the UK -- loads of realistic human drama. ........... Glossing over a shattering loss like the one Dalgleish experienced -- to depict it with just a moment in a church -- is the move of a lazy writer who doesn't know how to show the grief of a contained man like Dalgleish, which is a difficult thing to do. Plus, this loss is understood to be central to who he is; to show us only a brief scene in a church that hints at it is ridiculous. Suddenly he's back at work, bing boom! Ridiculous. No one considers him weak for writing poetry, and no one would consider a human who grieves a lost wife and child to be weak. ............ There's a huge spectrum between the _sturm und drang_ of the soaps and a restrained TV drama like this, meaning that there are ways to depict grief without resorting to the excesses of soaps. Finally, please reconsider relying on cliches such as "stiff upper lip" -- humans are more complicated and more interesting than that.
The thing that drives me crazy about these series is how aggressive Dalgleish is with everyone. Presumption of guilt rather than innocence. Which I guess is fine to a degree, but to apply it to everyone...
Mitch.... I did not see any aggression! You might be thinking of that red faced police detective who is always yelling at people! Could you point out where you think that Dalgliesh is being aggressive, please? maybe, I missed all those moments. Thanks
In this episode specifically Dalgliesh was sceptical that Bradley had committed the murder despite the evidence of his vomit. It was Massingham who was gung ho on Bradley's guilt.
Saw Marsden as Long John Silver at National. He seemed to be having fun, in 90's.
Amazing. Love this Adam Dalglish. Perfect with the books.
Love this series. They don't make em like they used to. These videos are very good and true to the P.D.James books.
Lovely to see a young Brenda Blethyn
Loved her in Chance in a Million. Two top class actors.
I didn't recognize her til the last ep 🤭
For me too, but I prefer her now! ❤

Doyle is such a jerk, good acting!
Like the inner thoughts of Dalgeish.
The redemption of the authoress was brilliantly scripted and acted. Oh wow, british acting, so, so excellent. 😑😘
Her redemption? Tell me more!
The characterization is on point here.
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
12':41--"Was he sexually adequate?" Great question--very few women ever ditch a man who is a good lover.
More applicable to men IMO. Sure, there are exceptions, yet for most women that's not their chief consideration.

AgathaPoirot
I think it's 6'4". I looked it up on IMDb once, but a while ago.
Big gorgeous hunk of man.
ghsperson yeah, something very sexy about this man

Vine ,Like a little British Superstar Ken .

Thank you!
Great adaptation of the books.
❤ Vera Stanhope ❤👍
I don't get it. She has no compassion for people murdered by the government, but life in prison is a inhumane..
I'm glad they cut Dalgliesh's internal dialogue in subsequent series.
I quite liked hearing it worked out in his head
Dalglish assistant is far too aggressive with witnesses he will have to turn that down if he wants to be promoted
A plethora of possible suspects...
I hope we get to see more of Geoffrey Palmer.
Gotta love Dalghleish
It's interesting they didn't notice the numbers on hymn board on their first visit to the chapel
Whatever happened to Chloe Franks? Beautiful
The chapel in the grounds is far too big for a private house which is what it was supposed to belong to
Too many stupid people who doesn't tell the truth!
Vera was annoying when she was younger!
why was the death of his wife glossed over and he shows no grief
Barbara Clark This theme gets developed in later series with Martin Shaw playing Dalgliesh.

agreed she's a throwaway

Mitch Mitche.. Aggression? Maybe self-assured and confident

And that scornful laugh...
"You must trust me". A real philosopher.
