The scene in which we first meet the man who gets the Institute job, makes me a tad wistful. I know that pipe smoking is bad for the health of humans, and all other creatures (poor housecats get awful diseases from living with hard core cigarette smokers), but I remember when there were still some pipe smokers about. And pipe smoke is NOTHING like cigarettes - which just smell like burning trash, or cigars. Pipe smoke is usually beautifully aromatic. Smelling a bit of it wafting over on a breeze in a garden of an evening could be rather a delight.

I have read all of P.D.James novels and have been impressed with the depth and complexity of her writings. I think she more than any other writer elevated the mystery from genre fiction to the broader category of genuine literary fiction I am now equally impressed with the quality of the televised mysteries. The problem is I don't remember the novels clearly enough to know if the video representations, however well done, are faithful to the novels I do remember that Adam Dalgleish seemed a kinder fellow in the books. I've been surprised how harsh and unfair he seems on television, even to the extent of humiliating witnesses and denying suspected people the right to an attorney

When Dr. Edwin Lorrimer, a forensic scientist working at a private laboratory is found killed, Detective Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh is sent to investigate. Dalgliesh had been in the area a few months previously investigating the murder of a young woman found in an abandoned car. There are several suspects: Lorrimer's subordinate, Clifford Bradley, who despises him; the new head of the laboratory, Maxim Howarth, who is jealous of his sister's relationship with him; a colleague, Paul Middlemass, who had a fight with Lorrimer. There is also a gruff and likely unethical policeman who was on the grounds of the laboratory at the time of the killing and a local pathologist who is raising his two young children after his wife leaves him for another man. When one of the suspects is also murdered, Dalgliesh learns a key piece of information. - from IMDB

Geoffrey Palmer is one British actor I never liked he always plays the same type person, even in his series "As times goes By" he played a grumpy man who complained about everything.
Comparing this version to the newer version with Martin Shaw: everything about the newer versions is different except I don't think Martin Shaw is the tall, dark handsome type that Dalgliesh is supposed to be. But the supporting actors, direction and sets in the newer version are head and shoulders above this.
Oh my gosh what a very young Lionel from the British show oh great now I can't remember the name of the show anyway he plays the husband of Judi Dench well that's her name in real life I remember the theme song that I can't remember the title of the show lol
Granted, there are a few gems nowadays. But in a sea of dross, I frequently find myself wishing the telly bods would just repeat some of the classic series from yesteryear. These PDJ being one such. In recent decades there seems to be no end of 'Midsummer Murders' type material, which, whilst not always dire, equate to what I call 'the Easy Listening of crime drama' - no edge, regenerative, too easy, and far too sanitised

Hmmm, talk about poorly-considered casting! Geoffrey Palmer is one of the finest satirical COMIC actors the UK has ever produced. Why on EARTH would his agent put him forward for a modern murder mystery with Roy Marsden, of all people!!! LOL
Personally I think Geoffrey Palmer does a good job of portraying the character,a dull sexually repressed scientist who becomes obsessed with an awful woman . I too am used to seeing him in As Time Goes By .
There's some good music including the catchy theme, but this is clearly no Sweeney or no Morse. Humorless, not particularly bright acting, no terribly entertaining script, no witty exchanges of one liners, no "hidden" lessons about classical music, no white Volvo as the Saint's or wine-colored Jag as Morse's... It lacks a little bit of this and that in nearly all these points. So, no wonder it didn't become a smash hit, no surprise it reached a cult status as let's say The Avengers... So: for me this is an OK series (6/10), but lacking the humor, the action, the glam etc. that could have lifted it to a higher status.

Yes, yes, I'd rather watch a rerun from Agathie Christie , Poirot, or Inspector Morse, than any newly-filmed movie with a boring plot and poorly-casted characters! When I want a break from writing music,I don't want to watch car chases and peope screaming in Hollywood to get attention!! Discovered " A Touch of Frost", some good Irish and scottish accents, and English Eloquence, Trial and Tribulation, too; I need BELIEVABLE characters and I'm tired of the "unrealistic events" set forth too. I'm American I really do hear ''dog leash.''🤣
I have read all of P.D.James novels and have been impressed with the depth and complexity of her writings. I think she more than any other writer elevated the mystery from genre fiction to the broader category of genuine literary fiction
I am now equally impressed with the quality of the televised mysteries. The problem is I don't remember the novels clearly enough to know if the video representations, however well done, are faithful to the novels
I do remember that Adam Dalgleish seemed a kinder fellow in the books. I've been surprised how harsh and unfair he seems on television, even to the extent of humiliating witnesses and denying suspected people the right to an attorney
Roy Marsden, a favourite!
Love to see my favorite British actors/actress when they were younger!!!!! I am American but I should have been British! God save the Queen.
I cannot get enough if everything British!
I agree! Since I discovered British mysteries and other genre, the USA productions fall short for me and I no longer watch- love all things British-try "Escape to the Country" (on my public educational channel)-documentary of those looking for Brit homes, they are shown different places- no excitement but a cool look at homes available to buy there- I lust as i watch....
@@myraoldham3098 I watch that everyday! It's on DABL channel in the late afternoon. What beautiful architecture and unreal views. I like Nightmare Tenats Slum Landlords too. I watch that on UA-cam.
See ya around the pond...lol
Wonder the sun never set on the British Empire, because even the God can't see or save the queen in the darkness of the loots from colonial dynasty.
@@jagdishacharya1438 Not kicked your quota of Dalits today, hmm? No wonder you're grumpy.
There used to be good American actors and actresses back in the but now there either dead or very old for a part Britain as the same problem the newer ones just aren't very or convincing in the part least we still have the old stuff on UA-cam

Good Lord..look at all those people trampling around a crime scene..
35 years ago is 1983 and 35 years before that - imagine what they did then on crimescene -1948 I guess they smoked ... and had no women in the force - wages was double to compensate for this fact

- from IMDB

I hope we get to see the rest of this series and Cover Her Face
Love this
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
Qual é o primeiro capítulo? Tá muito confuso.
Unfortunately image quality is very poor.
Geoffrey Palmer is one British actor I never liked he always plays the same type person, even in his series "As times goes By" he played a grumpy man who complained about everything.
'typecast'
👏👏👏👏👏👏

bollox=a descriptive term unrelated to testicles but use to describe something totally nonsensical eg an honest politician
does anyone know the filming location?
Comparing this version to the newer version with Martin Shaw: everything about the newer versions is different except I don't think Martin Shaw is the tall, dark handsome type that Dalgliesh is supposed to be. But the supporting actors, direction and sets in the newer version are head and shoulders above this.
This, from ITV, was aired in 1983; the BBC's "Dalgleish" were 2003 and 2005 -- huge progress re: production values for all TV shows.
I agree.
Oh my gosh what a very young Lionel from the British show oh great now I can't remember the name of the show anyway he plays the husband of Judi Dench well that's her name in real life I remember the theme song that I can't remember the title of the show lol
"As Time Goes By" is the show you are thinking of
In a real lab, workers wear soft soled shoes to reduce noise.
Why did the child make an effigy of Dr. Lorrimer? He had nothing to do with what she saw happening in her home.
Granted, there are a few gems nowadays. But in a sea of dross, I frequently find myself
wishing the telly bods would just repeat some of the classic series from yesteryear. These PDJ being one such. In recent decades there seems to be no end of 'Midsummer Murders' type material, which, whilst not always dire, equate to what I call 'the Easy Listening of crime drama' -
no edge, regenerative, too easy, and far too sanitised
is episode 8 anywhere hate to go thru all and not know the ending
I think episode 7 is the ending

Hmmm, talk about poorly-considered casting! Geoffrey Palmer is one of the finest satirical COMIC actors the UK has ever produced. Why on EARTH would his agent put him forward for a modern murder mystery with Roy Marsden, of all people!!! LOL

Dalgliesh was a great sleuth.
I think you are overthinking it. P. D. James was not a Hollywood novelist/scriptwriter. Open your mind.
Frank Hodges The Sweeney was an action show. I think Morse and Dalgliesh were along the same lines since they were both mystery dramas.
+Frank Hodges I suggest you watch the newer programmes by BBC starring Martin Shaw. They are excellent.
Moody Morse and Riveting Sweeney...when I finally was turned onto those...I so miss the 60s and 70s...we were so much more fun then.
Boring pace too slow stilted acting, through editing
