There's a bit of good information here. I think one of the biggest ones is judging the horse on ability followed closely by the state of the ground. I think too many people put too much weight on the human connections of the horse. I also love the tip about learning to forgive the horse, just be careful you're not fooling yourself and making up excuses for a horse that's just a poor runner.

Here are my tips forget the odds go for the horse you really think will win. Follow a few good horses and don't just bet in a rush on some horse you never heard of before. Avoid handicaps, how can you tell if a horse will beat another when they equal it out with weights. The exception is a good group horse in a low h/cap. Don't try and make money at it. Bet small you will enjoy the race and won't be skint if you lose! Don't go for trebles and all those mugs bets. Watch the morning line the guests owners or jockeys are always on good form but ignore the pundits they are clueless they like to pick on an outsider. Final tip follow Tiggy Wiggy next year, the best sprinter I've seen recently

Betting a horse (across the board) fresh off a stiff the week before was always a good bet. Always showing up early at the racetrack to watch the replays from the day before was a must for the serious bettor. Greenwood and Mohawk were a stiffers paradise before the slot machines. I'd say more races were a stiff job than going with the horse.

Absolutely, there is no point saying or attempting to say all horses run on their merit everytime.I'd say almost every handicapper in training at some point has been 'pulled' or not been trained enough to win, this is where the formbook can help as all ie handicappers have targets & a formbook can help you to decide which target the horse has.

I also use the breeding of the horses in N.H. the winners are mostly by the Top Sires (best blood) the Dam sire is important too.

Yes Derby winners and runners make good NH stallions as well as flat. Look at how many great jumpers Authorised has sired. Also betting favs can only work if they are value like the Derby fav yesterday was a value price. If you see a 2/1 shot and you think it should be say 5/4 then that’s value!

I was suprised that none of the advice here was to look at prices and more about betting on ability and form etc. To make sure we win more in betting we have to look at the price and value dont we?

I have been making profit on horses for years, I've had 11 betting accounts closed, and my biggest piece of advice would be to concentrate on the horse you believe has the best form to win the race. And if that horses price looks a fair price back it. If you don't think the price is a fair one then don't bet in the race.
Do not back horses that you think have the 2nd or 3rd best form in the race just because you believe the price is good value.
A lot of so called experts like to tell people to bet purely on value, but it's a load of old cods wallop in my experiences.
I'm not a fan of EW betting either, as I think it offers poor value long term. Obviously there are the odd exceptional circumstances that I will bet EW, but 99% of the time I bet win bets.

Most people who actually bet horses for a living bet by track bias. Different tracks had different biases. The same can be said for the rigged stock markets of today. If they don't change up their patterns always look for bias before betting or gambling.

NEWCASTLE 6:15 GABRIALS BOY 1PT EW (15/2 currently).
Only his 7th run today- travelled really strongly at the back on his last run. Finished strongly into a close never nearer 5/11 so escapes any weight increase and given a more prominent position tonight should have a great chance.
A 3/1 shot in my opinion with 15/2 readily available at the moment.

Would someone be kind enough to explain what the gentleman meant at around 3:04 into the video when he said, "always, always back a horse who can fire a new top..."
I cannot make out for the life of me what such a statement is implying?
    Thank you in advance!

When James says to back a horse that can "fire a new top", he means bet on a horse that is capable of producing a new career best (i.e. a new top-rating). Typically, this would mean betting on a young, improving horse, rather than one that has run many times before.

They say "Odds on look on". If you take 4/6 in a field of 15, then what you are saying is that the other 14 are 6/4 against. If you work in the bookies edge as well, then you can see the truth in the adage.

  • @MrConnolly25

Best thing you could ever do is to invest in an offical annual form book & read it properly. Nobody is a perfect punter & remember the horses don't know what odds they are.

I normally bet horses in-play to narrow down to possible winner. Even this process is not easy to profit !

    • @kamrulhassan329
      @kamrulhassan329 5 років тому +1

tincan tincan , yes agree. Even when you place your bet during in-play at on-line exchange like Betfair; you have 2 seconds delay in placing your bet. Then your triggered bet goes in to queuing system to be matched. Then Betfair will match your bet with best available price. This is Bull S**t because if you intend to Back a horse in-play say at odds 1.25 or under ; Betfair will very often match your stake at say 2.10 odds or above ( Betfair 's best available price ) and the horse end up losing the race. So you actually have not much control on your bets and your chosen odds but dictated by somebody else against your wish.
Intially a new found profitable strategy seems to work for a while but in the long run it never does. Waste of time and of course money !

Buy some Euros @ E1.40/£, wait, then swap them back once they strengthen v the Pound in a year's time. You'll make more money than backing the horses, or at least won't lose anything.

Totally useless set of advice from a bunch of journalists who if they could make a living from betting would not be working for 30k a year at the Racing Post. I have a lot of time for Willoughby but really 'back a horse about to register a new top' is as useful as 'back a horse that is about to win'. Most of this advice will not be of any great help. So what is the best bit of advice for a losing punter. Well its simple, your first change of modus operandi is to back in singles, check the early AM prices and take the best price available with bookmaker or exchange. If nothing else you are betting into a market thats around 0.5% per runner. If you are lucky enough to be getting BOG you are probably on 0% per runner. Not a bad starting point from which to apply your skill.
