Howdy, Bea! it's your neighborhood electrician here. Make sure to have some sort of barrier or form of protection around your wiring. Chicken poop is very corrosive, so anything metal will eventually decay. Also, it'll keep the chickens from "investigating" the wire.

You have really seemed to bloom in recent months. You seem so much more at ease & your outlook seems to have changed. You've created a great space for yourself & you seem more confident. You're looking geat; the hair color is very flattering on you & the weight loss looks so good on you. Whatever you're doing, keep it up because it's working. I'm very happy for you.

as someone who has had chickens some advice, get yourself some waterproofing liquid/paint like a flex seal and coat the inside of the coop at least a couple inches up, and I would get a cheap sheet of vinyl flooring (the kind you just roll out nothing that joins together, and put it down as a base to put your straw on top of for your coop floor that way you can clean it out with water without worrying about rot or it settling in the cracks of the flooring, even when you regularly scoop out your coop eventually the urine and chicken poop will seep into your porous surfaces and if you can't clean it with water it gets really gross. also don't put your roosts/nesting boxes up too high because remember you may have baby chicks somewhere down the line and you want to make sure they can get in and out with ease. lastly have you tested your dogs around chickens? Chickens tend to trigger the prey drive in a lot of dogs even the most well behaved and chickens are fragile creatures, even when a dog is just trying to play with one they can kill them very easily. I would find see if you can find a farm that would allow you to bring your dogs on leash to just see how they react to them.

This is solid advice. I keep chickens and totally love them. But, you need a dog that will be calm around them. My pittie is solid with all my various animals. She is definitely the calm grandma dog. Egg boxes not too high up is great advice for chicks. If you want them. Once you get your own eggs, you will never want to go back to store bought. My eggs are orange yolks, creamier, and really delicious. Good luck with your future flock! 🐔🐣💕 PS. First time commenter! 😄

So true, my sister had chickens and when I visited she used my border collie cross to get bedded at night, my dog lived in a big city and only herded children before. It was funny as the kids never realized it.

All good tips! my dog doesn't chase/try and play with the chickens, but he can be a little sneaky brat and get into the coop and steal eggs when the chickens are out for the day...so I try my best to keep an eye on him or keep him separate when the coop is open.

Hey Bea!!! Growing seeds can be daunting! I'm still learning, but what I have learned is that when the sprouts come up especially when you use those very small seed start containers you need to de-bulk the other starts that also came up. So for the peppers you put 4 to 5 seeds, when they start coming up, remove all but one in each cell otherwise they will get root bound and will not grow past a certain point. Also when you start the seeds in cells that small you're going to need to transfer them into larger pots MUCH quicker. I have been told by A LOT of gardeners to just start them in solo cups that way you're only transferring them once when you put them outside. Also when the sprouts come up you're going to want to have an oscillating fan on them to mimick the wind to help the stems get strong as they grow.

Can I add, Heat mat from day of planting, saran wrap or humidity dome until they start sprouting, then they don't necessarily need heat but they need light 2-4 inches above them so they don't get leggy. You raise the light as they grow. Check out Jess on Roots and Refuge, Rachel on That 1870's Homestead and Becky on Acre Homestead, lots of great info, not only on gardening but chickens, too. Love your content. Love how your brick wall and gym area came out. 🥰

Hi Bea! I grew up with chickens and they are honestly pretty easy.
if you are raising from chicks then prepare yourself cause they might not all make it.
For roosting we just had dowels nailed in at different angles so they could jump higher to sleep.
For nesting we had open corner shelves nailed in and put straw there for them.
I would consider water proofing the floor before getting them as it’s way easier to just hose the whole place out every couple of months.
How are you going to do outside time considering the dogs? The dogs will be able to get through chicken wire so you’ll need something sturdier. Maybe the stuff they use to make those outside pens for little animals? I’m sure the hardware store will have options plus you’ll need a gate to enter. Since the shed is against your established fence that means you’ll only need two sides which will reduce the cost.
Please consider growing a tree next to the coop - it will provide additional shade and drop sticks for them to investigate plus attract bugs for them to eat. Make sure there are worms in the ground for them to dig for.
Fruit shops tend to have special bins where they throw the outside leaves of lettuce and cabbages and if you ask nicely and tell them it’s for chickens they’ll let you take some for them which adds healthy vitamins and variety to their diet.
It’s hilarious to give cracked corn to chickens but remember it’s a sometimes treat lol
Also the chicken hypnotism thing is real and hilarious.

Oddly enough I've found local facebook gardening groups to be a HUGE source of info and experience from people gardening in my region. Still failure is part of the process. If you are into attracting wildlife, look into native plants too. It is amazing how if you plant it, they just show up.

Just passing on what I learned from Happily Ever Esther Sanctuary where I live. They had problems with their chicken's feet and it turned out the perches were squared edges, they needed rounded ones about 50mm thick to protect their feet and keep them comfortable. 😊🐔

I would definitely section off part of the shed so that you have storage for food and things. It would be easy to put up a wall so you have half the shed for them and half for you. Then just put a door in the wall so it's easy to clean the coop. Also I wouldn't over due the chickens they can get to be a lot of work, you can always add to your flock but if you overdo it then you have to try to rehome them and that's not always easy. But they are so fun to have Good Luck!

Hi, Bea! So happy to see you are getting chickens-they are so much fun! I have trained my dogs to leave them alone and we hang out together in the backyard. Absolutely the best part of my day-watching them is more fun than a Korean drama. For your pepper and tomato seeds, buy a heat mat! The tomatoes will sprout in a few days, and the peppers in a little over a week and a half.

I worked on a goat and cattle ranch. They also had chickens. And it’s not hard to take care of them. As long as you clean out the coop once a week and using diatomaceous earth four chickens to help keep away chicken mites. I would spread around the bottom of the coop then added would chips and shavings on top. I would also make sure your chickens are able to roam outside. They love bugs and will help keep the bugs down to help keep them away. And just keeping fresh water and feeding. It’s really that simple. And each chicken can lay up to 2-3 eggs per chicken each day. So don’t get more chickens than you need unless your family and friends also want eggs. That’s it there pretty easy. Good luck. You’ll be a great chicken mama 🐣🐓

Yay! Gardening and chickens are so exciting! I will say, starting seeds in the biodegradable peat pots is very hard because the pot will suck the moisture out of the soil quickly and kind of unpredictably. I (April) have never had good luck with them and I’ve been doing it for years. If you are looking for easy try the plastic trays or even just plastic solo cups. It can be so easy to get discouraged but you can do it! Right now I have a few of my starts in extra peat pots that I had laying around and I’ve really had to baby those guys compared to the ones I have in plastic. Good luck!! 🌱❤

Bea, I like to fall down those research holes online too. And I never remmember anything from it, if I do not prepare.
Consider doing "recepie cards" for all of your plants.
That way it is easy and visualy pleasing to find out what your plants need.
For the chickens, take the time to write your own manual into a thin notebook or so.

Your shed should suit chickens very well! And I'm happy to see how much research you've done. I have 4 chickens (built the coop myself and it was the most ambitious thing I have ever built) and once you have all of the infrastructure in place they're pretty easy. As far as plants go, don't be dismayed if these plants are a mixed success, too. Seedlings can be tricky! I usually avoid those bio-degradable pots because they mold and/or dry out my seedlings too quickly. That might just be a me-issue, so fingers crossed they work for you! But if they don't, don't worry about it! You can always buy seedlings. Getting them into the ground is what counts, You don't need the 'started these from seed' cred. And once they're in, investing in some drip irrigation on an automatic timer will make your life a million times easier. You can get battery powered timers that go straight on your hose spigot. Keep crushing it! You've got this!

YAY!!!!! Chickens!!!!! I have 16 hens, 4 roos, 1 five day old girl chick (why 1 - she is tiny and was being bullied by the other store chicks), 3 ducklings that one of our broody hens hatched out and is raising (it was an experiment), 2 female ducks and 1 dumb boy duck... My advice... (1) Check your cities rules on chickens before getting too far into your plans... (2) Definitely beveled 2x4s and use double joist hangers to mount them... You will have to modify the ends to fit properly but clean up will be easier because you can easily remove them... (3) If they ever get mites/lice you want to use Elector PSP instead of Permethrin which is toxic to cats... (4) You definitely want a run you can walk in to... (5) They are not cheap so if you're in it for the eggs - don't, but if you are in it for what I think you are which is an adorable, quirky, full of personality pet then 100% that money spent on feed, meds, supplements, vet visits, etc is well worth it... I really can't get over how often my girls make me laugh...

Bea, my hubby has chickens, and he uses old milk crates with one side cut out for the nesting boxes.

I loved my chickens, but that is such a great storage shed! You could always grab one of the smaller cages that are about $600 at tractor supply.

Couple suggestions for your coop, put some cheap linoleum on the ground, it will make cleanup soooo much easier once the girls are in there. And the other thing is get an auto door, saves you from having to get up super early. Omlet makes my favorite one.

My neighbor reached out to Starbucks and we’re able to use their used coffee grounds for their chicken coop for free! Now it always smells like coffee instead of chickens! Lol. Your neighbors might appreciate that too. Definitely should check it out😃 Good luck!

So excited for your chicken project and your gardening. You lookin good. I feel same in warmer sunnier months. You gotta get grow lights for yourself in the wintertime or a tanning bed. I used tanning beds for 7-10 minutes instead of the max 20 two or three times a week and it so helped my SAD (seasonal affective disorder). I don't have a car to drive to one this last winter and I sure could tell the difference in my down mood.

Girl, this is how it starts. A few cheap ferry morse seeds, and a couple of chicks, next thing you know you have 20 chickens, and you're looking for a tiller because the garden isn't big enough yet.
