- Among the old classic Hollywood movies, this is probably the best. It was filmed from October to December 1936 with a budget exceeding one million US dollars. Janet Gaynor's portrayal in her final words, "I am Mrs Norman maine" is so inspiring that remakes are made in later years including the 1954 Warner Bros Musical remake.
Janet Gaynor portrays a farm girl who makes her way to Hollywood overcoming all obstacles. She marries her favorite cinema star Norman Maine and rise to stardom, only to find that all that glitters is not gold.
This is shown in this clip where her husband Norman Maine becomes burdened with alcoholic problems, followed by deteriorating popularity in the movie industry and finally perished in the Malibu in the Pacific Ocean. Janet Gaynor's poignant presentation in her final words is a landmark in the movie industry.
My father aways said the Fredric March/Janet Gaynor version of A Star Is Born was superior to later versions. This short clip would seem to confirm his view.
1:44 it wasn't that funny.
I think this may be the first movie to really examine suicide and its effect on loved ones.
Try again...there's a movie based on a story by a man you've obviously never heard of child. Anna Karenina by Tolstory. Then there is The Love Song of J
Alfred Prufrock. Both made into fills WAY before this one. Otherwise, the 30's were the Great Depression. Please watch more films! I adore this one, but Metropolis is so amazing! As is Flesh and the Devil.
@@opheliac6379 Jeez. You need to watch your tone.
@@opheliac6379 He needs to watch more movies just like you need to lighten the hell up....
@@opheliac6379 He says "effect on loved ones" not just suicide itself. I've read Anna Karenina, and seen the Vivien Leigh film, and I don't remember much musing on Anna's suicide by her family in either the book or film. If anything a once respected and now isolated, rejected, and opioid crazed Russian aristocrat diving in front of a train in Tsarist Russia is the least realistic example of suicide you could possibly suggest.
I love the scenes leading up to him commiting suicide. And how he really made it look like an accident. It's dramatic, but in a really good and not quite as attention-seeking way.
As Vicki Lester walk toward the entrance of Grouman's Chinese Theater and Granny has already spoken she sees Norman's foot prints in the cement---she falters briefly then when asked to say a few words she says: Hello Everybody........This is Mrs. Norman Maine! As tears roll down the cheeks of EVERYONE watching the film clip........the music swells.................The End
Don Draper really should've seen this movie.
Hawaii: The jumping off point
I love this early version. I don't know these actors as "stars" , so I can totally get into the story . They aren't "stars playing other stars". I think I saw this version, first, actually; at a vintage movie theatre.
Mad Men brought me here.
Lady Gaga brought me here. #AStarIsBorn2018
Lady Gaga isn't a tenth the actress Janet Gaynor is.
