What happened to Mazzy Star is what happened to the music business. Executives demanded control of the music. I'm glad Mazzy Star resisted even though it cost them the spotlight. If all musicians had Mazzy Star's view, executives would lose control of the music, and popular music would be incredible again.

Back in '94, my first serious girlfriend and I went out "camping" in my folks new, full-size van that the rear most benchseat would turn into a bed.
So I put this song on (actually, I played the entire album) while we made out in the dark, in the middle of nowhere, for hours...
      Just two kids.
That was so long ago but, anytime I hear this song, I'm immediately back in that van, with her, that night.

Mazzy Star seemed to be a band of quiet introverts making ethereal, thoughtful, delicate music which made industry executives think they were pushovers they could boss around. However, as an introvert who's often been overlooked, misinterpreted, misunderstood and underestimated myself I can tell you that underneath the seemingly soft exterior often lies an independent streak fiercer and more powerful than any loudmouth would ever guess. Mazzy Star was going to make music their way or not at all and were willing and able to walk away when that was threatened to be compromised.

It wasn’t just her voice, it was her. His guitar playing was unique, especially for the period. It sounded like throwback, Cropper fused with blues, country and soul. With Mazzy Star, melancholy never felt so warm and comforting. It’s like they expand the empty gaping hole in my heart, fill it with some warmth, then empty it again. She is still one of the music industry's hidden secrets to most of the masses. My god, have you ever heard the track she did with Massive Attack, "The Spoils"? She has the most amazing, ethereal voice, and I suspect she is still in demand as a studio vocalist. Other artists and bands just love her similarly to how they loved Sinead. It seems strange that no label released a killer solo album that would've made her a household name, but maybe she likes it better being the magical ingredient in great records rather than a huge solo star on her own.(Smart woman!)

Does that include David Roback too too? I once told a girl in the 90s - she was a self-described big fan of Mazzy Starr - that it was a band name. The girl got mad at me. It's worse than that though. I have heard people refer to Led Zeppelin as "he" thinking Robert Plant's name is Led. They ve never been famous here, in Spain, but I have fond memories of their songs during my highschool years.
Love to listen to them, love to play those easy and deep mellodies and chords

Nothing speaks to my heart like Mazzy Star. I had an opportunity to meet Hope and the band in 1995 or 1996 and I was so overcome with emotion I just couldn't do it. I regret it so much.

A major band from the 90s, exceptional. one of a kind. Master of many musical inspirations, and yet few come to cite them, and they were not recognized for all of their work. They released classics upon classics.
I discovered them late, in 2015 (thanks to Kurt Cobain's list) and it was a huge regret not to have grown up with them. But since that date they never left me.
I invite you to discover Hope's discography which is also very good if you don't know it, her solo albums are of high quality.
I guess they are getting more popular right now with TV series. They are gems and are so, so discreet in this world where being seen is. If everyone could be like them: just make timeless, hazy music and go back to the shadows.
I am saddened by the death of David, he was an exceptional composer-musician, a genius from another time. I don't think the group will release any more albums under the name of Mazzy Star, David is irreplaceable by his presence but also by his sound. And I think it's better that way. Hope will continue to release solo albums no doubt, take her time.

David was actually working on releasing some earlier recordings and I beleive new ones w/Opal his band before, the one that became mazzy Star one Hope joined him. But yes, it is better that way unless they were previously recorded and they (whoever, mostly Hope I suppose) put out a release w/those recordings similar to whatthe Beatles did in the late 90s w/a few new songs that John had contributed to before his death.

I’m so glad I grew up in the mid 80’s & 90’s...nothing like it. Nothing can compare & you can’t even explain it because those who haven’t lived it cannot understand.

Into Dust is the most beautiful melancholy song. 🖤 She did not like facing the crowd while singing.

I saw her walk off stage after just 15 mins at one gig . She is really nervous on stage . even worse than Lana Del Rey and Hannah Reid (London grammar)

I heard these guys looking at the ceiling of a venue say "Well, she said she's not coming out unless those light are turned off." "THOSE lights?!! Nobody knows how to turn them off" "Yes, she says they are too bright and she's not coming out."
They were like 4 strands of Christmas lights. But somebody figured out how to țurn them off and she came out and did a beautiful show.

@@CS-ys4sy Many singers esp female suffer with really bad stage fright eg Lana Del Rey, Hannah Reid, Florence Welch, Beth Gibbons .
But I think Hope takes the Gold medal . I have been to around 1400 gigs since 1973 , and that is the only time I have seen a lead singer storm off stage after just 20 mins saying "you are so demanding "
we weren't . There was silence because the guys were in awe of her delicate Elfin like Beauty , and the girls simply wanted to be (Sigh "still we remember we who ..............................................................".)

Really love "Fade into you", I drove more than 9 and half hours from my cold foggy home in Central Ca to Joshua Tree and San Bernardino and gotta say this song hangs like atmosphere in the air and goes with that comforting exhaustion of the desert heat. I felt like I was melting into my surroundings. Visit the desert in your state and play it.

Her voice is hypnotic, almost like Stevie Nicks or Martha Davis.
