    Seventeen years after joining forces as the backing band for rockabilly cult hero Ronnie Hawkins, Canadian roots rockers The Band call it quits with a lavish farewell show at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Nov. 25, 1976. Filmed by Martin Scorsese, this documentary features standout performances by rock legends such as Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell and Muddy Waters, as well as interviews tracing the group's history and discussing road life.

    One of the best and brightest tune in “The Last Waltz”.
    Particularly, it’s very incredible matching between Van’s shout and gougeous brass section arranged by Allen Toussaint.

      Yeah he had horrible stage anxiety. They almost had to force him to even perform. Levon talks about it wonderfully in his biography.

    From 2:50 on....that beautiful lead guitar from Robbie and the appreciation for it Van shows when he just pauses a bit and says 'yeh' at 3:00....love it.

    The INDISPUTABLE thing about GOOD music is its TIMELESSNESS.
    Long after we and Van inevitably become “cosmic dust,” this beautifully filmed record will exist, to show FUTURE generations, what PASSION, and yes, SOUL, are all about. 😔😊

    Those guys go all out. It is amazing to me, how something that is in a few creative souls can, in one instance, find joyful celebratory acceptance in many generations to come. Van and Robbie are poetic masters of just such phenomena.

    If you’ve heard this version, before hearing the studio version, it will completely ruin it for you.

      So true. That kind of raw emotion can't be captured in a studio. It develops on stage with the collaboration of all the musicians. He almost didn't even go out on stage that night because of stage fright. Hard to believe he still had anxiety after he was so well established.

      You can like both versions.
      Nothing chills me out quite like the studio version. But this version is electric. Won't be listening to it to de-stress after a long day, though; that's what the studio version is for.

    At the end Robbie is thinking, "Where did he go??? I better end the song." Robbie looks a bit bewildered and recovers by saying, "Hey, Van the man!"

      Van actually pulled a muscle doing the kicks at the end of the song and that is why he sort of left abruptly, BUT not without doing one last “move” during his exit. That exit is prob one of my favorite things about the whole show.

    Van's dress rehearsal performance evening of 24th put even this show stopper in another universe.

    Fantastic performance by Van Morrison. The Last Waltz was an incredible concert. The most extraordinary thing about it was that Ronnie Wood was nowhere to be seen.

      The Irish are full of soul some of the greatest artists have Irish and Scottish ancestry. Bluegrass, Country, Folk in the US came from us here in the UK.

      Don't think so, it's well documented that he had a severe case of stage fright before this performance. He hadn't preformed in at least 3 yrs before doing this show.

      Just read in Clinton Heylin’s biography that he tried to leave before the concert to change out of those leotards he was wearing - Robbie wouldn’t let him so he was really freaked out before he went on. Turn it up!!!! Awesome. Stole the show. Kinda like what Billy Preston did at Bangladesh

      @1993 read Robbie Robertson’s book “Testimony”. Van is also known to be a very private/ introverted person so ya know he had to have taken a line before taking the stage here.
