Making a 1950's Christmas Dress Using Butterick 5556 //

- Every year, I seem to make at least one fun new thing to wear for Christmas. This year, that thing is a 1950's Vintage style dress, using Butterick pattern 5556 out of some very fun and sparkly plaid cotton fabric.
This is the story of how I managed to waste way too much yardage attempting to match my plaids on my numerous seams. Stick around till the end for some adorable fur babies wearing Christmas sweater content! ;)

What a pleasure to find a full busted, plus size lady willing to show fashions on a real woman. I have always avoided plaids and full skirts. But this looks divine on you. Keep showing us what your up to.
Thank you!
Hi. There is a trick I've learned that helps with difficult gathers/ruffles instead of using two rows of breaking stitches. It is to take fishing line, and zigzag over it-trapping it in/to the fabric where you would do the old two rows. Then use the strong fishing line to pull the gathers/ruffles to what you want, then sew them down and clip out the zigzag stitch, freeing the fishing line (to be rolled and used another day).
Hope this helps!
I had thought about trying that, but then I remembered I still haven't serviced my machine, so it's still not doing zigzags reliably. I really need to get that fixed.
Thanks! I'm going to try fishing line and zig zag! Wait till I try to explain that to my hubby! Hahahahaha!
The dress turned out beautifully, and the colour scheme is just perfect for Christmas. I think I am going to need a moment to recover from the second hand anxiety over too little fabric.
Thank you! And seriously - I feel like that's the story of my life. I never buy enough!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions I have the bad habit of buying too much!! The only good thing about that is if I make a horrible decision I usually have enough to save the project. After the project spends some time in the corner being ignored and or cursed at.
I'm just wistfully imagining life where the second closest joanns is 30 minutes away. . . My first closest is nearly an hour and the second closest is 1.5 hours lol. #rurallife
Oof, that would be rough! I think this is the closest I've ever lived to so many. And before June, there was actually one that was even closer, but unfortunately, it closed.
lol. me too. I live in a small town.
I learned to ignore pattern matching to save money. I still love my dresses even so.
Oh same! I've had it happen accidentally with stripes, but I don't do it on purpose because it means using more fabric and no thank you. I'm certain that I've seen pictures of extant plaid gowns that weren't pattern-matched, so I don't feel bad not doing it myself.
Yeah, I don't always try to pattern match like this, and it's true - they often did not do it, historically speaking, either, but the plaid was so bold on this that I knew it would drive me crazy.
It's so cute!! It's always good to see the actual process of working through fit and pattern-matching/fabric panic moments. They're so real and relatable!!
Thanks! All that plaid sure did complicate this project!
At the end I was like "I didn't know she had a toddler! ... oh no that's a dog."
Hahaha! He's my fur-baby! :)
What a darling dress. I adore the charming neckline. Bravo! Also, I LOVE seeing your pets. It's so reassuring that there are others who cherish their furry family members.
Thank you! I feel like part of the appeal of watching youtube is just seeing everyone's pets. :)
Yay for wholesome puppy footage!! Yes, all dogs are puppies. Even old ones. Super cute dress, too!
Oh, he's definitely still my puppy! :) And thanks!
You took fabric I didn't like at first and used a pattern I hated and made it all look GREAT! Merry flipping Christmas, Rebecca!
Hahah! That's awesome - thanks! Merry Christmas to you too!
Oh this turned out so lovely! I am sewing like a mad woman to finish up my Christmas dress as well!
Thank you so much! Good luck on your dress!
I think the dolman sleeves are really cute on that bodice, though. My memory of 50's early 60's clothes was than comfort was the last priority, hence my generations universal move to jeans and T-shirts :)
Thank you! And I think you're right about that memory!
I'm soooo glad to see a plus size making these dresses! You inspire me over here in Idaho!
Thank you so much! :)
The dress turned out so cute! Your style is total goals. :) Also, I’m in complete agreement about Last Christmas being the worst Christmas song.
Thank you! And omg, yes. I cannot even fully describe my hatred for that song.
"threw it away" doesnt rhyme with "someone special".
My sister ordered a Christmas dress off of DressLily. It did not go well. Yours turned out way better! Thanks for sharing your sewing with all of us. I particularly loved your episode on all the various corsets and stays. All the fat costumers of the world can rejoice in you and your experience!
Oof, I have heard so many bad things about dresslily! And thank you! :)
The dress turned out and looks fabulous on you. I loved snowflake earrings too.
I have 2 Joanne's I regualrly go too and have in the past asked friends on Facebook to look for fsbric for me. Id totally come to your aid if one of mine had it and meet you half way. We gotta help each other!
Thank you!
I actually had a friend run to a fabric store for me while I was in quarantine and she helped me out with porch delivery. I'm still so incredibly grateful to her!
After watching this a Christmas dress is definitely on my make list for next December...!
It's so fun to have something special to wear! I might have to make another one next year!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions it could be a thing... CosTube Christmas Dress Bonanza?
At 7:00--sooooo....I'm not the only one who chooses ridiculous projects like this! Very pretty fabric.
Thanks! And nope - definitely not the only one! :)
You and your furry children are so beautiful, and look adorable in your Christmas outfits.
This dress is sooooooo pretty! Majorly successfullll. (I hope you are enjoying that posh organized sewing room. It looks fabulous.)
Thank you! And I so am. 😊
I kept on looking at the pretty organised shelving too
Your "similar" matching is genius! Looks great!
Thank you!
Fantastic video! I'm so glad you got enough fabric in the end i really loved the choice! The classic green red Christmas combo with just the right amount of golden in my opinion
Thank you so much!
You and your fur babies in your Christmas finery is so adorable 🥰. Beautiful 🎄 dress!
Love your creation. Especially love the plaid fabric!
I was more invested in the pattern matching than in most thrillers!
Hahah! That's awesome! :)
I LOVE JOANNS I WAS THERE TODAY WITH MY CASE MANAGER IN 2021 UGHHHH GORES I UNDERSTAND VERY BEAUTIFUL DRESS GODDESS🥰👑👑🖤💚🖤👑👑
i love a dolman sleeve, generally. and this one looks great on you. i wonder if the fit issues don't come up for me because i have narrow shoulders and i'm not particularly busty. wish i had your tiny waist!
Thank you! And I'm still quite new at dolman sleeves, so I couldn't say, but that's interesting!
I love the plaid. The dress is gorgeous and you look beautiful. Merry Christmas!
Thank you! Merry (belated) Christmas to you too!
You and lion dancing is to freaking CUTE
The thought to having several fabric stores close by, wow. My closest is at about an hour by bus.
We used to have three in my town but within 2 years of each other they all closed.
Absolutely love the swoosh of this dress. :}
Yikes, that must suck! I guess that's the nice thing about living in a very suburban area.
So pretty! Just needs a 50’s crinoline to hold it out lol so pretty merry christmas
Thanks! I'm wearing my mid-size Malco Modes petticoat at the end for the reveal. I don't like them to be too huge!
Its perfect for you!!! So pretty. I love your doggie and cat and your tree is gorgeous and sparkly!!!
Thank you so much! :)
I love it! So festive and merry. Hope you enjoyed your tea. The sleeve helps with the vintage look, and maybe 50s ladies never raised their arms haha.
Thank you! Our tea was lovely!
It looks stunning on you!
Thank you so much!
You look lovely all dolled up in the dress. I had never thought of the problems with dolman sleeves, I have only ever had them in jersey knits. The sweaters are really cute too. Stay safe and have a merry Christmas!
Thank you! Merry Christmas to you too!
I think this dress is beautiful and is very flattering on you.
Thank you!
I am just a guy. I dont know why a sewing video appeared as a suggestion on my page. I watched your whole video. You are Lovely, as is your dress.
Thank you!
You can always add a godet in the side seam arm area..won't change the look...but make movement easier.
Looks great. Love the neckline with the standup collar. All the best for the new year
Thank you! Same to you!
That dress is lovely! I actually love how busy the plaid is. Is that weird?
Also, "Hi Pupper! You are so cute!"
Thank you! And no, I don't think that's weird at all!
This is So. Friggin. Cute. Loooooove this on you. I always imagine that the dolman makes arms look skinnier bc the fabric shows looseness, but i. so glad you came to like it
Thank you! :)
I don't have problems with dolman sleeves, because I cut them straight across, shoulder and sleeve, similar to a traditional kimono. The sloped shoulder/sleeve design is period, but will always restrict range rove of motion. I don't think the 1950s designers cared much if you could raise your arms! Or move anything!
That said, you look adorable in that dress! I love the victory rolls, yes they're 1940s, but so what! Those colors look wonderful with your hair, and the dress fits so well. What a lot of trouble you took with matching the plaid, good for you.
I think a lot of 1930s plaids weren't matched AT ALL. That's the way I'm going to do it. 😂😂😂
Thank you! Do you find when you do the kimono sleeves, that it feels like there's a lot of bulk under your arms?
Lion and Dora looks so cute in there sweaters!!! ands i love the dress, it came out so so good! and the plaid is awesome!
Thank you! And I feel like all pets need matching sweaters! ;)
Lol, that opening! The dress looks awesome! I never knew about that issue with dolman sleeves. I guess they only work well with knits?
Thanks! :) And I think that's probably the only way that you'd still get a full range of motion.
Pretty lady in pretty dress, merry Christmas!
Thank you, same to you!
Your dress is fabulous, but it's the furbabys that steal the show,my pug hates coats but loves his Christmas jumper, and the cavapop likes all the fuss. Have a wonderful Christmas time.
Thank you! Yeah, Lion doesn't mind clothes at all, but Dora is not quite a fan. And merry Christmas to you too!
I really love the neckline!
Thanks!
Im finally in the Christmas spirit and it's all thanks to you and this dress classy and fun and simply gorgeous. Merry Christmas.
Aww, thank you so much! Merry Christmas!
Pretty, sparkly!
Thanks!
I feel like the problematic joint of the top and the skirt was because of all the seams and gathers on the skirt. Maybe replacing them with circle, 3/4 circle or even half circle skirt would make plaid pattern more visually pleasing for you. the under the waist part would be smoother, the skirt would be easier to attach and to match the pattern, but it still would be full and twirly.
I really like the dress
It's a sad sad thing when you ONLY have six yards. I have this pattern. These things are good to know. This black plaid is CRAZY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! Needless to say -- the dress came out pretty. AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! IT IS SOOO BBBEEEAAAUUUTTTIIIFUUUUUULLLLLL!!!! I was looking at Joann's Christmas fabrics the day before , and they were out of almost everything. I saw that one, (hard to miss), and they are out in my area, as well. Love a plaid!! Gorgeous work! You look lovely! Stay well! Still screaming about this dress! Happy Holidays!
Thank you so much! Happy Holidays to you too! :)
I loved it! I wonder if a big brooch or some alternative color plaid bow would have been cool? You are an amazing person to watch craft!!
I've never seen Dolman sleeves on an actual person before, only on the pattern pictures. They look easy to do, but I think the limit in range of motion would annoy me. It's a very cute dress, though :D Sometimes things need to grow on you!
Thank you! And yeah, I think it is growing on me. :)
I came by way of your mystical swipe up powers. (I would have found it eventually regardless)
Ooh yay! I'm so excited to finally have that feature! 😁
Great job. This dress is lovely 😍
Thank you!
You are local to me, how cool going to Leavenworth, WA. I'm glad I found you because you give me the confidence to sew as a bigger person. 😍
Aww thank you! There are costumers/sewists of all shapes and sizes! :)
Very beautiful ... even your cat is stylish! lol I am so happy that I found your channel. Merry Christmas!
Thank you! And yep - gotta get my pets in matching sweaters! ;)
Dress is beautiful , you look gorgeous !
Thank you!
Merry Xmas!
This looks absolutely lovely! There is no such thing as too much plaid (too *many* plaids, yes. Too much, no) and this one is fun!
I'm glad you stuck with the pattern as is, because it really looks lovely on you; you're right about the styling, tho. It can make all the difference and it's fun!
Thank you! And merry Christmas to you too!
This dress turned out fabulous! Hope you have a lovely Christmas! I can't wait to see what you make next.
Thank you! Happy Holidays!
I think it looks great! Well done!
Thank you! 😊
For future plaid matching...match the seam line, not the cutting line. Awkward at first but worth it, if off matched seams bug you. Still looks great though.
Leavenworth in snow is beautiful. Hope you had fun.
The dress is gorgeous. Try some red accessories, I think they would really pop.
Merry Christmas.
Thank you! We didn't wind up getting any snow in town, but the mountains were snowy and lovely!
Last Christmas is the worst Christmas song ever! Beautiful dress!
Thank you! And ugh - totally!
Beautiful !
Thank you!
You look lovely!
When I think that there is not enough fabric, I always suggest to myself making sleeves or the front from a different fabric from my stash😆"it would be a cool colorblock, as if this was the idea from the start". Usually I manage to sew everything entirely from that too small piece of fabric though.😀
Yeah, I'm usually pretty decent about piecing to try to get there, but with all the plaid, and the fact that this fabric was still readily available, I just didn't want to exert that extra effort!
2021 goal, make a Christmas dress with a swishy skirt!
Yes! Do it! :)
Sleeves being your average, normal, everyday ✨nightmare✨
lol, right? Don't worry, sleevils are very much involved in next Tuesday's video ;)
Looking forward to it
HI gorgeous, have a very happy and safe xmas.Love from Australia.
Thank you! Merry Christmas!
I think the bodice is very flattering on you. It is a lot of plaid but that's the point! :) Looks great on you. A big sparkly brooch wouldn't hurt too :) Happy Holiday :)
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you too!
Your cat is all NO.
You look super cute!
Thank you! And yeah, Dora was not a fan of that sweater...
Hope you had fun in Leavenworth! We haven't been in ages. Maybe next year...
Thank you! It was a little scary how many people weren't wearing masks, so we didn't last long, but it was still pretty seeing all the lights.
really cute...
Thanks!
You look so lovely in the dress. Definitely rock it!
Thank you! :)
It’s so cute! I don’t know if I’d like the sleeves I think that would drive me nuts cause restrictive in the shoulders and arms is not my jam. I wonder if there is a way to hack it to be a regular sleeve or if it would just be better to find a different pattern. Thanks for sharing the journey good and bad!
Thanks! I'm tempted to try this pattern again, but change the dolman sleeves to regular sleeves. So if I do, I'll report back on how it goes!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions yes please do, I’d love to know. ❤️🌻
i did't know you were going to run out of fabric,,,,lol i can only sew a half way straight line... i did feel my eyes cross and brain go numb when you were doing some kind of algebra with fabric when you were talking about the skirt matching.
When I started started sewing, I preferred dolman sleeves, as I had no idea how to set in a sleeve. I also used raglan sleeves for the same reason. They sure did use more fabric, but both were very easy to sew. I look back now, after setting in hundreds of sleeves, I wonder what my problem was.
I definitely did appreciate how easy they made the assembly, but I agree, normal sleeves aren't usually too terrible. :)
Learning curve.
That dress looks so cute on you! I have another Butterick vintage pattern with a dolman sleeve, which was also binding up on me and restricting movement. I dealt with the issue by sewing a teardrop-shaped scrap into the underarm seam as a sort of gusset. I get almost full range of motion and it's not noticeable unless I try to raise my arms over my head.
Thank you! I might have to try that!
WOW SO COOL 😍👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
a solid green or red velvet would be a stunning belt. velvet or shiny taffeta if that's the name for it. since you have a small waist it would look so cute. at least in my mind it does.lol
Thank you! I tried it with a red patent belt, but red or green velvet does sound nice! And the sewing ability is all from a lot of practice. My beginning projects did not look great. :)
Interestingly enough, as a very busty plus sized gal, I have found that vintage style butterick patterns need very little alteration to fit me proportionally.
You look so fabulous in that bright green!
Thank you!
you are amazing.....how you can tailor for your by yourself.....amazing.
It looks gorgeous on you! I've got this pattern but am a little afraid of trying it because I'm plus size and haven't graded patterns up before.
How far over the pattern size are you? I've never graded up a dolman sleeve pattern, other than the one size up grading I did here, but grading up in general is fairly simple, and I will be doing a video on it in early Feb. I hope it will be able to help!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions I need to increase to a 51" bust and 50.5" waist
@@eeyore_chick6059 That might make it slightly more difficult, just because you'll be grading the waist to a different size than the bust, but it should still be doable. Check back for that video next month and I'll show you how! :)
@@LadyRebeccaFashions thank you! I look forward to seeing your video!
Beautiful lady! I was thinking the same as you when you didn't like the dress, I thought to myself, put on some lipstick and hairdos, you're going to like the dress! I would like to know what kind of girdles you wear underneath!?
Thank you! I actually didn't wear any kind of girdle with this, though I'm sure I should have. so this was just with tights, a modern bra and camisole, and a Malco Modes petticoat!
i love dresses like this, and especially in busy patterns, but i always use circle skirts cos i'm terribad at pattern matching, and then i can't achieve the same volume as a gored skirt. if you were ever to make this again, would cutting the two front panels as one work? this assumes having fabric wide enough to allow it, but i found the "tree" effect of the diagonal in the front not laying the same as the bodice more distracting to the flow of the silhouette than the sleeves (which i thought were quite cute on you, even if they're annoying to move in lol). that being said, trees are very on brand for the season and the dress's inspiration
Thank you! Yes, I think cutting it on the fold would work. It would change the grain of the fabric, so you'd probably have to let it hang longer to make sure any bias stretch has fallen out before you hem, but it would definitely help avoid the tree effect!
"Last Christmas, AKA the worst song ever known to man" -- subscribed!!
I'm so glad you agree. Thanks for subscribing!
I so hear you on wasteful pattern layouts! And a printed tartan instead of a woven one, so the print was off...
Thought about dolman sleeves... designed for the ladylike types who do the washing-up, but have a man to change the lightbulbs!!
I've just finished my #OctopusMaxi Christmas skirt, which was Simplicity S8923, and which was soooo wasteful for the godets! (Yes the skirt is on Instagram). At least the offcuts are big enough for pocket pieces etc.
You're probably right about the dolman sleeves!
And I saw your skirt - it looks great!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions thanks :-)
And has an elastic waist!
👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑👑
Love it. I am wondering if you could have added more ease in the bodice to have more room to move your arms, it doesn't look like i would expect a dolman sleeve to look?
I don't think more ease would really do anything besides look more baggy, though apparently gussets in dolman sleeves were sometimes a thing.
this is the 2nd video of yours that I have viewed. really enjoyed the corset from the different time periods on your body shape. now I am a new subbie. do you sew for the public? if so do you find that larger women are poorly represented when it comes to fashion? I noticed that most designers think all larger women are large in the same way....not all of us are blessed with an hour glass figure, i find a lot of clothes don't fit my body shape. i also like looser fits, i'm old enough to want to be comfortable. wow never saw anyone take so much time lining up the fabric, it sure does pay off. I am enjoying your channel.
I do take commissions, but generally it's for cosplays/princess dresses etc. But yes, I think larger women are definitely not well represented in fashion, and clothes often don't fit right. For example, I love that Torrid exists, but all of their clothes seem to be empire waists, which on my body, is not flattering. It's hard to find something that will be comfy, flattering, and fashionable when you're a larger size.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions i sooo agree.
I love the plaid, but the 'xmas tree' effect of the matching down the front threw me off. It ended up looking good on you though :)
Yeah, that threw me off at first too. I think it's growing on me though!
could you make a video on grading vintage patterns (or patterns in general) for plus size women? i'm pear shaped and it always messes me up when it comes to patterning
I have a similar video coming up in about a month - it will be on grading up commercial patterns, when they don't go to a large enough size. Is that what you were looking for?
@@LadyRebeccaFashions yes! that's exactly the kind of video i'm interested in! i can't wait to see it 💖
You may hate the song Last Christmas (you're allowed, I'll let you 😄😄) but check out the film of the same name. Pure Xmas feel good schmaltz 😍
But does the song play in the movie? Because if so, I can't watch it.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions only a bit; how about I tell you the time stamps and you turn the sound down 😄
@@samwhyatt8685 Hahah! Sure, if it's really that worth watching! That song seriously induces feelings of rage in me.
It has a lovely message.
So turn the sound off:
From the point she gets thrown out of Ed's flat until she slams her suitcase on the counter when she gets to work.
From when the shop owner says 'Christmas Gibbons' until the male customer leaves the shop.
Grinning donkey nativity - don't ask! 😄😄 it's very brief
