It needs shoulder pads. This is a wool coat and coats are more structured. The pads will help it hang properly because they will support the weight of the coat and keep the fabric across the shoulders smooth.

Love this coat! I think the shoulder pads work fine for the coat. I'd rather have it a bit big to accommodate clothing & I'd for sure wear this coat all the time!

I think you should add the shoulder pads, correct the curve of the embroidery pattern, and smooth out the shapes in the embroidery pattern. I suggest using photoshop to plot and clean up the embroidery pattern before you plot the stitches. With photoshop, you can warp the pattern image to the shape of your collar piece and smooth out the outlines in your pattern. You will then end up with a pattern that is streamlined and precise.

I've only made one suit jacket in my life and that was challenging enough. It was in fuchsia linen. This is major and I'm sure it will look amazing when you are done. The shoulder pad looked great!!❤❤

I think you should use the shoulder pads. It's a tried and true not to mention easy fix! Everything is lovely amazing don't be so hard on yourself!

  • @Nicoya

The chain stitch looking stitches were likely done with an actual chain stitch embroidery machine. You can do it by hand, which is probably a lot easier than buying and learning how to use a whole new machine, and will probably look a lot better than trying to make a similar looking stitch with your regular embroidery machine.
When it comes to digitizing, I think it's probably the best idea to use the reference photos as a loose reference of general shapes and proportions rather than trying to trace the image exactly. That'll allow you to concentrate more on making the shapes smooth and flowing, and the result will probably look a lot better.

Definitely use the shoulder pads because it looks more polished. I actually like the embroidery in the brown thread and it would also look amazing in a dark blue. I look forward to seeing how it all comes together. I purchased an embroidery machine a few years ago and I still need to learn how to use it. I was dealing with a number of health issues and it got put off to the side unfortunately.

It's fun seeing you handling old tech! Digitizing is a dream of mine. I got a new old stock machine (older than yours) off marketplace, and my son got me some hardware to help get the designs into the machine. For fun. We'll see 🤣😂

What a huge project. You're right, I don't remember seeing that coat in the movie, but it is very pretty. I like the pink fabric you are using.
Now that I have been seeing you wearing clothing with vintage shoulder widths I really don't like the modern broad shoulder designs. I guess it works better for mass marketing, making clothing that covers and rarely fits anyone well but is supposedly their size so they buy it anyway.
I do my sewing by hand, so I haven't tackled big projects like this. But I would happily fill in the gaps in the machine embroidery... which wouldn't impress any potential buyers for your embroidery pattern.

I've often wondered if you'd be happier with your mock-ups if you did narrow shoulder and narrow chest (not small bust, but narrow high bust) adjustments first thing. Even your highly-fitted bodices usually have a little extra fabric in that area.
Anyway, love this so far, and I can't wait to see the embroidery done.

13:26 CG again. Google your machine make & model for the users manual. It will likely be in a PDF format, which is downloadable. That hopefully will answer your question about sizing on the drawing pad. 😁

The pads instantly make the coat look more tailored and expensive. Stick with the shoulder pads.
Also, I love how to you did the out-tro with a random thread on your boob. I feel like I’m always covered in rogue threads and I was tickled to see it’s not just me.

  • @silmarlfan1

I might have an idea about how to do the embroidery. if possible you could make a paper pattern using sew-able/Swedish tracing paper and drape it over the mannequin with the coat on and draw the design on the pattern. that way the distortions can be taken care of. after you can scan the pattern or take multiple pictures and stitch them together in PS. I think I saw another youtube costumer do this with stitching the embroidery pattern together from pictures; I think it was Bella Mea. IDK if this will help. I'm 3d minded so this would be the first thing I would try, because removing distortion from a digital picture is hard, and drawing on a surface is easy.
