Amazing. Nearly 20 years later, I still don't think I've seen anyone else try a whip through to a double layout. We've seen full-twisting double layouts but to tumble into a double layout is ridiculously hard. The speed she carried through the pass and the height...my goodness. What an athlete. That routine could have won gold in Barcelona.
I was there in the audience the day she performed this routine in Baltimore. It was then and is still my favorite and the best floor routine she's ever done!
Even 19 years later, this level of tumbling is still current. She would have won/tied for the gold with this same performance at the 92 Olympics. I wish she would have stuck around for the 93 and 94 worlds.
Probably the best floor routine of Kim! Unfortunately, she couldn't performed like this at Barcelona Games because of her stress fractured in her leg. Otherwise, she could medal in AA. Love her! 💜
Latonya Wallace The injury and her stressed that caused her out of medal there, Latonya. But it seemed she was peaked in 91 and burnt out in 92 just before the games start. I agreed with you! Still, She is one of my all time favourite American gymnast. Love her. 💜
I agree. Also her body looks so different here from the tape of Barcelona. At the olympics she looked so thin. It reminds me the change in some Romanian gymnasts in 1988 Olympics. Probably also some eating disorder?
@@felipemajo5770 it coukd be buy she got her shape back from the worlda in '91. And yes if she had been ok she would had won the all around gold and in other events. Miss her
She wouldn't admit it at the time, but she had some kind of leg injury at the Olympics. A stress fracture or something like that. A lot of people think she was in too much pain to do that pass or just couldn't produce enough power to complete it.
I would've loved to have seen this take gold in EF at Barcelona. I don't think she was really good enough at her best to compare to Miller, Gutsu, Onodi, Lysenko, etc. in AA but I desperately wish she could've gotten a floor gold with Onodi/Miller for silver and Milo for bronze
you do realize that in 1968 they were basically tumbling on rugs. There were no springs at all in the mats. I doubt many 8 year olds could compete on the equiptment that was used back then and still do the skills with any grace or even 1/2 as well.
If she had been at this level in Barcelona she would have shut it down!!! This was the best tumbling being performed in the world at this time in my opinion
Marie Fjordholm did one too for 2000-2001, but yeah, you never see it. And both Kristen and Marie's was a whip-immediate, so that makes the whip through to double layout even rarer. Go KIM!
Too bad she was injured in Barcelona. She would have out tumbled everyone there. And would have won gold on Floor and been on the podium for the AA. Still one of the all time greats ❤️
yes, her 1991 was a version of "In the Mood" by Glen Miller. I agree, this routine was not as strong artistically, IMO. I wish they would have challenged her more instead of having her use a cutesy routine. BUT, I think she did as well as she could with what she had! Love Kim =)
Part of what made Karolyi gymnasts good is also what turned out to destroy them. They were overconditioned and always had stress fractures before worlds and olympics. And they never seem to make the connection. Mary Lou, Zmeskal, Nadia, Moceanu...
yes, I think it's starting to change especially when you hear gymnasts like shawn johnson "only" train 5 hours a day. That must cut down on stress fractures at least. The Karolyis came from a communist system where they figured if one gymnast is injured, they had plenty to replace. and every other country followed with that mentality... nadia trained 7 hours a day as well.
@Catherine H. I know this comment is old but Nadia was just super young in 76 and hadn't had time to develop injuries yet. She was only 14 in Montreal.
This music is different than her 1991 routine right? I think this routine appeals less to international judging. I remember her dance being stronger in 1991.
your right.....theres gymnasts today who prob couldnt do a full twisting DB like Mukhina did in the 70's! LMA629 should research the sport more before making comments!
...you should see Shannon. When she took over the triple whipback pass after Kim (first) retired, her height was about the same and her extension far more elegant. She didn't have Kim's power though, nowhere near it. She went for a layed out double twist instead of the double-back, after the pass.
wtf..where did this tumbling come from u mean to tell me she was capable of this kind of tumbling and only performed a full in piked at the olympics..I know she was hurt but she couldve pulled off a double lay if she did a whip through double lay here :( She obviously didnt want to win an Olympic medal

Gutsu did whip through to double layout in 1990 and 1991. Kareema Morrow also did it when she was at UCLA.

She came back in '94 and tore her ACL and then came back for '98, and tore her ACL again in '99.
Probably the best floor routine of Kim! Unfortunately, she couldn't performed like this at Barcelona Games because of her stress fractured in her leg. Otherwise, she could medal in AA. Love her! 💜
+Satawat Medhanee I totally agree with you. She seemed burned out by the time she got to Barcelona.

Felipe Majo I never thought about it before but it is possible?
@@felipemajo5770 it coukd be buy she got her shape back from the worlda in '91.

One of the best Floor Routines ever!! Seriously!!
The first tumbling pass was one of the coolest ever! Amazing!
Kim peaked one month too early

intldawn i think it was in her ankle which was heavily wrapped during the entire Games.
God, I wish she could have done this routine in Barcelona!! My favorite of her’s!!
after this performance.... I'm her fan!! WOWOWOWOW!! I saw her for firt time at Barcelona!!! she ROCKS!!

No joke! Whip to double layout... incredible
OMG ! whip- two back flips into double straight ! that was superb ! i loved it, plus that full twisting double piked at the end..awesome !
If Kim could have performed this routine in Barcelona she would have medaled in floor finals and the AA. Too bad she was injured.

Hi Jason Hi! 😘
It's ridiculous how easily she did the first pass
Fastest tumbling pass EVER.
Legend shit 💗
Flawless performance. Kicking off a high energy floor routine that ended in a flawlessly stuck landing.

Go KIM!
Gutsu was the first to do whip through to double layout in 1990 and 1991 🙌🏽
No worries! I'm just happy you posted it. :-)
Too bad she was injured in Barcelona. She would have out tumbled everyone there. And would have won gold on Floor and been on the podium for the AA. Still one of the all time greats ❤️
Wow she is unbelievable, so amazing!
That first pass was awesome...Too bad she got hurt. That would have made a big difference in the EF at the olympics.

Her routine prior to In the Mood either was better than this one also, unfortunately.
I love how everyone literally has stopped what they are doing and all eyes are on kim.

MRy lou won though

Texaco is messing with me also, Kim! It's not the FBI though, wink face.

holy crap

I just adore her!
um, yeah... my profile :)
how does she do that .. :D
Score 9.950
She had the most difficult tuimbling in the world at this meet...too bad she didnt get to perform this at the Olys...
dmann3g the only other gymnast I know doing difficulty like this was Gutsu, who at 1991 worlds mounted with whip to DLO and ended with a DLO!!
Is it just me or is the music slightly off? Amazing routine though. :-)
Yeah the audio and video is off. She wasn't. LOL
@intldawn it s not true
it was quite common in 90's
Gutsu Rusan, Maloney, Mcintosch Frolova competed it
Wow she's amazing, god watching her makes me tired...kinda looks like elija wood though.
don't forget durham, phillips, mills, okino and probably others. if u destroy more champions than u make, if that success?
wow that is super-human! lol
If only we had more powerful gymnasts like her that are entertaining to watch besides their tumbling passes
wtf..where did this tumbling come from u mean to tell me she was capable of this kind of tumbling and only performed a full in piked at the olympics..I know she was hurt but she couldve pulled off a double lay if she did a whip through double lay here :( She obviously didnt want to win an Olympic medal
dahighbar it was later revealed she was basically competing with a broken ankle in Barcelona.
