  • Rowing on the sea is a rare pleasure. Steve Walker, founder of Sculling Academy, www.scullingac..., shows how the TS515 Training Scull, built in Australia by EDON Industries, and available in Europe from Ahoy-Boats, www.ahoy-boats..., performs in coastal situations and advises on simple precautions to take.

Great video with useful tips. 40 minutes further on and you're in Abersoch, come on down, it's always lake calm and tropically warm.

I rowed at Newcastle, Durham, Cambridge, Chatham, Malta, and while this type of boat is good for calm inner seas, in some places it can change very quickly to two and three foot waves, so I prefer a boat with a larger rocker and high up front and an elevated transom or two pointed boats, so that the boat will lift its nose much faster with an oncoming wave and when running with the wave a back wave will not broach you. I made boats to fit the sea with a little more rocker. They are not as fast as the one shown here, but they protect you better, just in case the weather changes, and it does. The beauty about the boat shown here is that one can use longer oars as again in wavy seas, long oars are not so desirable. When the conditions are right , this boat shown in the video is the one to use.

If you really want to row in the sea and over waves then you need a Nordic Explorer ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/explorer/ which is much as you described and is an excellent sea boat, ideal for Malta.

Yes, no boat can do everything, just as no car can do everything. I do offer a beautiful, coastal, rowing boat, the Nordic Explorer, ahoy-boats.biz/nordic/ , but it is considerably bigger and more expensive. However, it is a proper rowing boat for use in the sea.

+RJ Richmond Ah yes! I misquoted the old Henry Ford comment about black cars. If I am fetching unsold boats for stock from Australia to the UK, half way around the world, then I only fetch white ones, on the whole. But when I was offered this one I jumped at the opportunity because it is great for demonstrations and exhibitions and, of course, videos. You can order a boat from a wide range of colours but you will have to wait till my next container load if you want a coloured one. If you want one like this multicoloured TS515 Training Scull then you can have one similar but never the same. The rotamoulding process by which it is made means that the arrangement of the colours chosen is chaotic and unpredictable. The advantage of this is that your boat has a fingerprint that no other boat can ever have so if it were stolen it could easily be identified and the thief apprehended! If you want one, coloured or plain, then please contact me through the web site: www.ahoy-boats.biz.

I gather if you’ve had four-level cervical fusion, rowing any boat backwards is not in the cards. A pity since the rowing machine at the gym is wonderful for strengthening my core.

Well good for you, rowing in a gym with a 4 level fusion. I guess it must be difficult turning your head to look around. But you know you could fit a mirror to you head so that you can see behind you.
