David Bowie - Station To Station (Christiane F ) 1980 - new edit, remastered HD

  • You may already be familiar with this clip from the 1981 film 'Christiane F', but this version is a new extended edit (more Bowie, less drugged up teenagers) and has a new improved soundtrack in an attempt to make a more self contained, stand alone version.
In the film, this scene shows the main character of the film, Christiane, attending a 70's Bowie concert in Berlin with her friends. In reality Bowie filmed his part on a set in New York in 1980 , miming to an edited version of 'Station to Station' from the 'Stage' album. (At the time, he was appearing on Broadway in 'The Elephant Man' and couldn't fly to Berlin for filming).
In the movie, the performance footage then was edited with crowd scenes from an AC/DC stadium concert. The scene was intercut with plot elements consisting of teenagers smoking drugs and popping pills. One of the teenagers is then shown having a bad time of it sitting with his head in his hands with a contorted face.
All of this is fine in the context of the film. But I wanted to remove these distracting plot elements and make a video which would serve as a stand alone performance video as much as possible. To this end, I've re-edited the video to replace the drug taking scenes with more Bowie performance shots. (I've also removed a brief wide shot of AC/DC on stage which was in the original edit).
The soundtrack of the film version overdubs the song with a lot of newly added crowd noise. Again, fine for the film, but it sounds excessive when viewed as a stand alone video. So I've replaced it with the 2005 remastered version of the song from 'Stage'.
In the film the song fades off into the next scene. Here I've extended it and given it an actual ending.
    I hope you like it.

Tarantino is a mocker, and this is not true! Not because of Bowie, but because of the direction. Look at the people next to the stage. Have nothing to do with a concert. The crowd is soooo fake, very fake acting. Would be pretty much better put true fans of Bowie, not background actors.

When i see Bowie on stage he always takes me to a journey with him. I was lucky enough to see him 9!! times when he was still alive, and his "Thin White Duke" period is the one i can most identify with. I guess for him personally he was his hardest. To look like an superarrogant human being was never his intention, but his inner conflict made him. He had no choice. "Station to Station" is one of his absolute masterpieces, like "Blackstar". Both written in his most difficult situations in life.

Thin white duke was his strongest personal struggle and he takes that frustration out on stage, you can feel he’s speaking to himself.
His hardest man VS man battles were done in this time/persona.
The passion that fans sensationalize is serious dedication to his art.
As an artist you try and expel everything from yourself, as your feeling it.
The passion of David here, just imagine what was going on in his head.
(Ps check his interviews after the last Ziggy tours, he expresses himself modestly as “a collector”, his strength brought us his greatest productions but he sacrificed his own vulnerabilities.)
      Just a great human being.

Bowie was cool. Still is cool.. I saw him live in Sacramento back in the ..early 90s, I guess it was. I was very close to the stage and could see backstage as well, off to the left. At some point in the concert, he went offstage and was hotboxing a cig, with the smoke circling around his face. He even looked cool doing that! Just having a smoke! He wasn't in front of anyone, he wasn't being watched. But every move he made, even offstage, was polished and smooth. I guess if everything you do, every word you speak, and every movement is watched and critiqued by the world, you get to know what is cool and what isn't. He definitely had the rock star persona down pat!

I don't know if I can explain this well but I will try. Watching this scene makes me emotional. I haven't seen this film, so obviously when I watch this scene it's totally out of context and thus there is the possibility that I'm projecting, but when I see the girl (I'm assuming she's the titular character of the movie) approach the stage and watch David Bowie perform, I see this awe one her face, and listening to this song and watching it I feel like I am transported to that moment, and that she is me, standing there in awe of him, because even from here in 2016 that is how I feel about him. It feels like he is singing straight to her - straight to me. I feel this when I listen to other recordings of his songs but this scene seems to encompass the feeling well. I feel like he is singing to me, singing about feelings and thoughts that I have had (minus the drugs in my case) , and I feel a kinship and a safety there, like he understands me and knows and will always be there for me. I am overcome with emotion and I'm sorry if I sound totally nuts - I'm not sure I have quite the right words to describe how I feel so I hope this suffices. And I mean, other than all that complicated stuff I just tried to explain above, this scene does provide a nice surrogate to seeing him live, which I will never be able to do.

Even though the lyrics are as disjointed as Bowie was at the time of writing them, eating little and snorting coke awake for days, it's amazing to me that he not only survived that time but thrived. Station to station is about stations of the cross, a lot of religious elements eastern and western. One amazing song, album, artist.

Wonderful to see and hear this, an astonishing performance by David Bowie in an incredible, deeply harrowing film with a powerful anti-drugs message. The look on Brunckhorst's face at 3.30 is tragic: Bowie's repeated line "it's too late" records the precise moment her character's (Christianes F's) childhood dies and her innocence is lost forever. Two landmark performances from a landmark movie.
