- Rachel Dolezal shot to fame last year as the prominent civil rights activist accused of lying about her racial identity. She identified herself as black but it was revealed she was the child of white parents. Now, nearly one year on, she tells HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur how her life has changed and reflects back on the media storm of June 2015 that changed her life for ever.

The comparison between her and trans people needs to stop. It is NOT the same thing.
Being a trans person implies that you must take responsibility of your own identity. Being trans implies that you are honest about the way you were born, that you don't hide it, that it's not a secret for anyone, since it simply doesn't define you anymore. If you don't have that honesty towards people, you can't expect them to treat you seriously and accept you as you truly are. If Rachel would have had the same speech as the other trans people, "I was born this, but I feel a stronger spiritual and cultural connection with that, so I wish to conform my identity to that"... then none of her nightmare would've had happen.
She was asking to be accepted and taken seriously by the people she shamelessly lied to.

If viewed through a postmodern lens, isn't she entitled to create her own identity? I don't see much of a difference between this and transgenderism, if one takes both race and gender to be social constructs. I don't, personally, but I'm wondering why there has been such vilification from those who presumably do.

Life is hard for most of us, why should she get ANY special treatment? What about her real family that she disowned, who cares about them?

Thomas Howell which was about a white kid who puts on blackface to get into Harvard on the African American scholarship because he didn't want to pay to go to Harvard. Later in the movie he falls in love with the woman who was suppose to get the African American scholarship and regrets putting on blackface. The movie didn't bode well for black people as if should and it bombed at the box office. Bottom line she is using this fake symphony story to sell her book and using your confusion to do it.
Superman I want to see that film. But I'm not confused. I will not be reading her book. She crazy. But good on her for cashing in if she has the opportunity. As soon as I heard her story I thought book deal.

We are reaching a state now where someone can claim to be what they are not (on any given day), and paint themselves as a victim. This kind of thinking poses some serious social questions.
The colleges in the USA have a higher bar for entry for Asian American students compared to black ones. What if an Asian-American says, "I identify as black" , would they be able to enter college more easily?
