    Dettlaff has a moth pin.
    A moth symbolizes faith, subtlety, adaptation, vulnerability, concealment, transformation, determination, death, afterlife and clarity. Its habit of navigating by lunar light leads it to be associated with intuition and psychic awareness, while by emitting “pheromones”, it embodies allurement, attraction, and suggestion.
    Its modified in design from a real moth but its wing shape looks like that of a Sphinx moth. It represents death.

      Just Me
      Well, I'm pretty sure CDPR didn't mean to copy because they couldn't come up with something, the vampires in BaW are quite original, but here at the references I saw ;"D
      1. According to Regis' words said each vampire has a "trump card", an inborn unique gift - vampires were just like that in Twilight, each had their own powers
      2. There was a vampire in Twilight (can't recall the name right now) who could call upon herds of other vampires with his thoughts, --> just like Detlaff
      3. Blood addiction (see: Regis) - another Twilight reference, the reason why the Cullens didn't drink. Vampires don't need blood to stay alive, but if they do drink, they get addicted.
      Pretty much all that comes to mind. I think that was simply some fan service from CDPR, kind of like the Harry Potter easter egg. Other than that, BaW vampires couldn't be any different to known clichés so far in all other aspects, so no worries.

      Peregrine, as far as the books are concerned, I think this is actually one of Geralt's last witcher contracts.,
      In the base game, when him and the other witchers are talking about never taking a contract on a Higher Vampire cause they're "tough sons-a-bitches"
      And, considering they physical gap, and that Dettlaf can actually transform into various thing(s), it's no doubt one of Geralt's most taxing battles.

    I feel like this is a dance between two rivals who understand the bitterness, the regret, the ugliness, and the sinfulness of their world but choose to express their emotion and drive in order to leave....just a mark on this world. The mark of a being, whether they are accepted or not for who they are. The unfairness they find themselves thrust into this life. Detlaff was truly broken by the world and Geralt had to end him. Geralt had to look at him as just another job. But when he looks back at Regis as he kills his own friend-his blood brother-that’s when you know that Geralt was sorry. Regis still loved Detlaff after killing him and that shows when he decided to not attend the ceremony. He doesn’t have a reason to celebrate a brother’s death. That’s something any minority can relate to. They don’t want their brothers and sisters to be laid down. They just want them to live. They want them to be better. But Detlaff was too far gone....

    • @regisaglaeka1837

      Thank you for your comment. I mean, truly thank you. Someone needed to say it out loud. I am so sorry for this broken heart. If he only choose to escape the battle with his brother. He did not need that exact fight! As he said he needed HER death. Not the witcher's. Not anyone's else. Only her. But no, he let his anger control him and... And this battle happened. I am so sorry for him. He deserved more.

    • @isaiasvalladares4210
      @isaiasvalladares4210 5 років тому +2

      Регис Аглаэка Detlaff was not a child, he was competent of the world but he couldn’t see it the way humans did. He was more comfortable being around lesser vamps and even had some bruxae dalliances, alisted affairs, and companionships. He’s fixated around being himself and when Syanna came along-he found someone who he thought he could show everything. Syanna however couldn’t understand the level of emotion that he showed to her. She was broken too. She chose not to change and...Well, she should have stayed in Nazair. But she feared the idea of being weak to others and she sought to prove it. She used Detlaff who was forced to undergo a path he wanted to leave behind: a weapon. He’s killed too much. He simply wanted to love her but she simply wanted to feel better about herself. The hardest part was the betrayal-the perception of who he was to her was shattered; the world he wished to become part of was now closed to him because she made him feel like more of an outcast with each killing he was ordered to do. He questioned his existence. She gave him an answer. Detlaff wanted to kill her and pitied her. She was like him and he too could never integrate into humanity.

      The whole time I went through the DLC ,I was hoping there was a way to make Detlaff come to his senses. I did believe what Regis said about him, but then i remembered Anakin from Star Wars, and i remembered how love for someone can turn even the best men into monsters. Top that off with Syanna being a sociopath, and i knew that Detlaff was more or less a dead man walking. While I love his desgin, personality, and his relationship with Regis, by the end of Blood and Wine, he doesn't have anything else to live for other then killing Syanna. As much as I hate Syanna, I couldn't bring myself to put Anna through the pain of losing her sister a second time. Rest in peace Detlaff. you may have been a monster, but I forgive you

    Vampires in this game blows every other vampire out of the water, from sparkle twink Edward, to the beautiful Selene from underworld, and everything in between. Turning into mist, long sharp claws, insane regeneration, immunity to sunlight, having a true form and being able to change to it at will, total immortality with the exception of only another of its kind. God I love this DLC. I can see now why this game won against bloodborne. Both are masterpieces, but I’ve never had so much fun playing one game. As of right now, Dettlaff’s my favorite Vampire

      It's great because in so many other incarnations of vampires in TV or games they can come off as underwhelming and too weak for the 'strong protagonist'. I love that in Witcher lore you have a variety of weaker, more primitive vampires that are intimidating but manageable; and then you have higher vampires that are near on unkillable and give someone like Geralt an immensely tough fight. I think that if Regis hadn't finished off Detlaff then Detlaff would likely have actually killed Geralt.

    Why does everyone seem to think Detlaff is some kind of badass? He was a whiny brat who got his heartstrings plucked and manipulated shamefully by someone a fraction of his own age, and then at the end when he realized he'd been had, he couldn't face up to his own lack of good judgment and threw a tantrum like a spoiled child. Then Papa Unseen Elder had to spank him for making too much of a spectacle of himself. And then his best friend was forced to put him down like a sick dog, ruining his own social standing in the process. ...Love his music though.

    • @Zidana123
      @Zidana123 7 років тому +15

      His powers are something he was born with, not something he trained for. It's not badass at all when it's the norm for his species. That's like saying a human is a badass cause they can stomp on an ant. Detlaff being able to stomp on humans because of his nature doesn't make him an badass Higher Vampire. Like the human has to be judged on a human standard and not an ant standard, Detlaff has to be judged on a Higher Vampire standard and not a human standard.
      And what does being inexperienced with human emotions and behavior have to do with him being unable to own up to his own mistakes, throwing a tantrum, and causing problems for other vampires? He's a sapient being who has lived for hundreds or thousands of years, and regularly disguises himself on a daily basis as a member of a different species. Do not even try and tell me that he doesn't understand the concept of deceit, or that humans were capable of it.
      What it comes down to is this: What's her face hurt him. Emotionally. And in his pain he wanted to hurt her back. How does he do that? By attacking the thing she loves and values: Beauclaire. And if he were like, 20-60 years old, fair dues, ya know? That's like a totally normal and understandable thing when you find out your lover's been lying to you and manipulating you and made you kill your dog that you were fond of (or whatever other comparison is apt for Detlaff's 'friend' from the bootblack memory). But the guy's like 500 years old or whatever, dude should have the age and experience to know better than just lashing out like that, because it produces backlash for the other vampires, with whom he supposedly feels a deep strong kinship and loyalty (or so Regis claimed, anyway).
      Hell, the three Higher Vampires we see in the story all seem to understand pretty quickly that Detlaff going nuts and levelling Beauclaire wasn't going to be good for them and vampirekind in the long run, so having forethought and good sense seems to be a normal vampire trait as well. Unseen Elder's probably never even talked to a human before but Geralt got the point across to him in like 5 sentences.
      And just look at the results. Not even talking about the humans. Let's talk about the vampire casualties (cause supposedly that's what Detlaff cares about deeply, is other vampires). Like a dozen alps and bruxae and katakans and ekimmaras got wasted on the Night of the Long Fangs by Geralt. Regis' life is fucking ruined cause the other vampires see him as a traitor and want to kill him on sight. Orianna got outed as a vampire and got killed by Geralt later in a barn. And Unseen Elder was... mildly annoyed. All the vampires were harmed by Detlaff's actions, and if he wasn't like a petulant fucking child he really should have seen this coming.
      ...Love his music though.

      I think you misunderstood the premise there. Unlike you I don't labor under the pretense of being able to change or influence other peoples' thoughts or behavior with silly chiding.
      I'm mostly curious to why people think he's so cool when the story presents him as a giant fuckup who had to be put down like a sick dog.

    • @user-bc7xs2bk9y
      @user-bc7xs2bk9y 7 років тому +9

      You 're wrong. Dettlaff is extraordinary even among his kind. Lesser vampires recognize them as alpha male leader. Bruxa of Corvo Bianco was in love with him. Regis said his enemies never lived long. From Regis's words you can gather he is special. Pay some attention to the script before writing essays trying to belittle Dettlaff. From the bestiary text you can gather that he suffered from existential pain and that Syanna managed to heal him. Is why he was blind to suspect her and lost it due to her betrayal. And Higher Vamps have to train their bodies to master their gifts. They don't get high level abilities absent working decades to master these.

    • @Zidana123
      @Zidana123 7 років тому +4

      *"From Regis's words you can gather he is special."* No, from Regis' words I can gather that Detlaff saved Regis' life, and on that basis Regis holds him in high esteem and THINKS he's special. Guy's got shooting stars in his eyes every time he talks about Detlaff. He's an unreliable narrator. And in the end actions speak louder than words and Regis still put Detlaff down like a sick dog because Detlaff was a fuckup.
      *"From the bestiary text you can gather that he suffered from existential pain and that Syanna managed to heal him."* No, from the bestiary text I can gather that he suffered from existential pain and that Syanna, a being with a fraction of his age and experience, managed to take advantage of that existential pain to twist and manipulate him toward her own ends. And when her betrayal was revealed he was too fucked in the head to deal with it in a rational way and threw a tantrum. I covered this point previously, by the way. It doesn't reflect well on this ancient being to get manipulated so easily by what should be to him, a child.
      *"And Higher Vamps have to train their bodies to master their gifts. They
      don't get high level abilities absent working decades to master these."* Never established in the game narrative. If this is from the books, it's irrelevant to the story presented in Blood and Wine.
