I argue that nr 2) could be even worse if they had diarrhea of the explosive kind and instead of their chairs they sit on a bucket with their robe draped over it. Nobody will know. The stench is just a hallucination.
This is one that has been a recipe for disaster all along, big time, for more reasons than one. Rotten weather? Check. Pilots swearing like sailors when anything goes awry? Check. Questionable experience? Check. Disagreeing with ATC? Check. Assuming that lying about having politicians on board will have some sort of meteorological impact? Check! Moral of the story: NEVER fly a plane when you're boiling mad, and that's coming from an armchair pilot.
What about pilots that have no choice? On their shift, they’re expected to fly Certain flights. Their bosses likely wouldn’t take “I’m too mad today” as an excuse not to do it.
I agree. The pilots did seem to have “getthereitis” though, deciding to land at their original airport even though they knew the weather was still too bad to land safely.
"Pilots that have no choice"? Getting angry is a choice. Mature adults-and especially professionals in a workplace environment where safety is critical-choose to not become angry, to remain calm, and to assess the situation thoughtfully. These pilots did not act like mature adults or professionals.
The First Officer commented about "jitters" and "lack of sleep" at 07:40. That would have made them impatient and careless. Driving while tired after a night shift made me impatient and careless. It sounds like their company's scheduling was a contributing factor.

From the "findings" portion: "According to the data presented, the pre-flight rest of the crew prior to the departure to the Sochi airport consisted of over 24 hours at home. However, the crew’s cockpit conversations indicated their fatigue, which could have influenced the outcome of the flight. The flight was performed at night, when the probability of mistakes is especially high."
As the saying goes “a bad workman always blames his tools.” Such was the case here, where the captain didn’t trust his instruments. Someone with that kind of temperament should not be in a position of authority.

The weather’s the weather, regardless of wether there are VIPs on board or not. I’m sure most VIPs would opt not to be flown into the ground, rather than have to land at an alternative destination.
Dear flight channel: it would be nice if you can do a piece on a Iran Air B727 training flight which crashed in Rasht in 1996 under most unbelievable circumstances. There were 8-9 pilots and flight engineers and company's chief pilot on board most of whom were killed. They forgot to put landing gear down and after scraping the belly for 2000 feet on the runway, they took off again......

Brings back some memories. Flew into Yerevan , FO on a 707, new years eve in a blinding snowstorm with aid for the earthquake there back in the late 80's. Those were the days. Went nonstop, Miami, Gander for fuel, Shannon - more fuel, Yerevan. Offload and back to Shannon and finally food and a Hotel.
I was a kid in the Baltics but I remember that earthquake well, there were calls to give shelter to children who had lost their homes and families and I begged my parents to help a few, but they decided against it. Yerevan couldn't accommodate planes for a stopover, it had to be in and out as in any disaster zone I guess. Did you at least have a relief crew on board?

The captain sounded like a haughty narcissistic a-hole who thought he knew everything and could just do whatever he wanted and that was all there is to it. There’s too many people like that these days. I can only pray i never end up on a plane with a pilot like that.
Reminds me a bit of the Avjet Gulfstream flight 20 years ago where some big brass pax in the back pressured the pilots to land in Aspen, regardless of unfavorable conditions. Pilot sure landed them alright.
Didn't end too well for the Prez of Poland when he and his staff forced their pilot to land at Smolensk in a non-precision approach with below minimum visibility conditions. The pilot landed them in the forest and took them straight to God.
They were in the cockpit of a big airplane too early in their experiences in aviation. They should have stuck with C-172s for a couple thousand more hours. And played with Microsoft flight sim in their spare time.
Back years ago the pressure brought on pilots by fat cats in First or De Luxe class was enormous. We about turned due to thick fog and eventually got diverted to Manchester Ringway. Said Fat Cats shouted at the stewardesses so I clumped down the aisle and told them they could see the fog and we were going to a safe landing. Being ex RAF I probably said what I thought about their treatment of our long suffering girls. Anyway we landed, my mate and I were relieved, filled in paperwork and were left to find our own way back by train. For 3 months we were magically rostered entirely on night freight. We both left.

Maybe the airbus computer should have a function where, if the sidesticks are giving opposite inputs the computer takes control away from them, levels the plane and climbs rapidly to a safe altitude. Call it "Time to figure out what's going on" mode. I'm joking, but it is odd that the computer is so sophisticated and yet will allow the pilots to fly the plane into the ground.

The frustration probably began with the time of day (middle of the night) and a “get to the barn” bias. It never ceases to amaze me how pilots supposedly IFR competent suddenly forget the most basic training in IMC conditions… the instruments. RIP
Seems to me like the captain became frustrated at the autopilot, then being overtaxed, and with a somatogravic condition setting in, he lost his situational awareness of his aircrafts altitude AND attitude. Just a deadly brew! Having suffered from somatogravic conditions twice myself (One was induced in training, one was a real life situation) I can tell you that the only clue (besides trusting your instruments) is a slight lightheadedness that doesn't feel quite normal.

Angry aviators not in control of their emotions, night flying, bad weather, get-there-itis, lying to ATC to get info that would allow them to land, and the captain didn't even totally understand the autopilot's features- the last two factors being absolutely inexcusable. Then, they botched their altitude recovery efforts. Want a recipe for disaster? That's how one happens. About the only thing they didn't screw up was to be drunk. Those pilots did about everything wrong you could think of- and on an A320, which is supposed to be able to correct (some of) their mistakes. Pitiful flying job. Rest the souls of the dead. That controller needs to be imprisoned. First of all, how stupid is to give false favorable weather reports to ANY flight crew, knowing lives are at risk, and if the flight crew mentions ANY sort of V.I.P. on board, wouldn't that make you even more apprehensive? This is just stupidity all around, and that controller needs to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
It’s amazing that pilots are not conversant with the aircraft controls and how all the different flight modes cause changes to things they don’t understand, that’s the problem computers fly the aircraft not the pilots themselves.

It's pretty sad that this had to happen. We had a guy on the left seat, and a guy on the right seat of this A320 that were experienced pilots, but at this stage, they just couldn't keep their anger at peace, and land this airplane safely with all those other people on board. They seem to have been confused on the some of the A320 systems, during their pre-determined approach. The very fact that they were so close to landing at the airport they were destined to land at, is also is a huge mystery. It's sad that many lives were lost here because of "un-settling" situations in the flight deck. Though this was also pining the airline for improperly training their pilots through these kind of conditions.
Does somatogravic illusion make a pilot unable to read an ADI? How do you not notice you are headed down with the horizon indication and a tumbling altitude readout showing you're headed straight into the drink?
That crossed my mind. During his period of considerably increased stress perhaps his interpretation of the AH reverted to the Russian type where the presentation is opposite. That's been a factor in several incidents.

Thank you. From my layman's perspective you've really got to know your junk to avoid the avoidable. Technology moves so quickly, and probably? a much greater percentage of pilots today are more ' book smart' but not seasoned and deeply experienced operators. And then even if they are, back to the Technology change factor.

Very hard to understand the chain of events until you recap it. The crew's actions go by in a blur, mostly unexplained. We're also expected to know autopilot descent modes.

First Russian cultural deference for authority, I suppose by deputy, you meant a Member of parliament (in Russia the Duma?) or MP, lead subordinates to accept “alternate reality” for decisions making. Second, how does a professional pilot, IFR proficient and current (I assume) falls for somatogravic illusions, isn’t this problem explained and taught in the training, why does it happen in commercial aviation?

It's shocking how little flying is done and how much pilots just push buttons and turn computer setting dials. Yet the plane and computer let's them fly into the sea.

Very hard to understand the chain of events until you recap it. The crew's actions go by in a blur, mostly unexplained. We're also expected to know autopilot descent modes.

The fault is the equipment if human error is made; the two sticks work against each other. I come across this so often in aviatation "goodbyes" and near crashes, that I believe these sidesticks need better handling capabilities
