      Quality assurance seems like a steering committee job to me, where you are supposed to greenlight corrupt crap. The way the industry works, as a QA guy your job is to make sure the company's crappy-low quality standards are fulfilled, not to enforce the best quality possible. But hey, it's a problem affecting the whole business world: How many employees would love to and could do a much better job if they were allowed to, given the right tools and the time. Often when someone does a crappy job it might not be ineptitude, but lack of time allotted.

      Fox Populi I don't know how we got away from the idea of getting as much air on hot components as possible. My first legit case was the Antec 1200. I could have stuffed all the clothes I own in that massive thing and I think all told it had nine 120mm fans and that 200mm fan on the top. I never felt hot air come out of that thing. It exhausted cool air unless I was stress testing, where it maybe got warm! And those were the days when components might be 30-40c warmer, on average. Now I somehow ended up with an S340 and while I like the compact size, that case blows balls. I hold everyone responsible for giving it good reviews. It blows.

    • @Andy-White
      @Andy-White 7 років тому +1

      R T I don't get why people bitch and moan so hard about airflow in cases. I currently own a H440 which is widely slated as having horrible ventilation, despite running two overclocked EVGA 1080 cards in SLI and running games at max settings in 4K it never throttles, crashes and is whisper quiet. All this without even having to run my fan curves to 100%. Cards are designed to run up to 70, 80 degrees and higher with no issues.

      My first case, that I'm still using btw, is the CM Storm Enforcer. It has decent cable management and good airflow. Still haven't had a reason to upgrade even though its more than 7 years old. I was looking forward to the h500 but it was a bust. Best case right now in the looks/functionality department is the Meshify C. My case looks are outdated lol

  • @marbzirc376
    @marbzirc376 5 років тому +14

    During my last upgrade, it was the time when these tempered glass and RGB cases were getting dominant in the market. Thank God, a store still had a stock of an older case which prioritized airflow. I got that for a huge discount instead - half the price of these new cases - and I couldn't be happier.

    It's supply and demand, not really a dictation of the market by the manufacturers. They've seen that tempered glass and RGB cases are popular and selling well and are joining in to make some money. I hate those cases personally as I don't want the distraction of lights, and I want as little EMF/RFI leakage as possible, so solid steel cases with good airflow but quiet are perfect for me. Looking at the Fractal Design XL R2 for my next build.

      Put in there a 420 Rad with optical cage on top (but you can go up to 480 if taking the Optical cage out), a 280 at the bottom, and a 120 radiator at the rear + add 2x 120mm fans + 2x 140mm fans at the front + the entire watercooling stuff... It's really, really heavy...

    I wish more manufacturers would exploit the fact that hot air rises on its own. (Need proof? Check out the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta) If the path of ventilation is straight up, would not the fans (when necessary) simply be helping the natural flow? This also applies to heat sink fins---they should be vertical to maximize convection, as many designs do.

    I just wanted to say thanks for this video, finally someone that talks some sense!
    I completely agree with what you're saying, and I would add as well that tempered glass side panels and window side panels in general started the bad thermal trend for the air cooled video cards. I noticed this when I switched to the 780t from the cooler master 690 II: at the time I had a sli of 670 reference, and the temperature increased a lot making those cards throttling. That's why I did my first ghetto mod with 2 small aio's attached via zip ties. After that I switched to a single 980ti with a custom cooler (a gigabyte g1 gaming) and the card, albeit it was able to sustain the heat, it was way noisier than what I wanted. Therefore, I bought a 140mm fan bracket for a benchmark table and mounted it under the video card. The noise at that point was pretty sustainable and most of the time video card's fans didn't need to spin, but it made increase the cpu temps because the hot air was pushed through the top radiator destined to the cpu.
    After a while I decided that my system looked awful and the PC was not able to sustain its overclocks in the hot Italian summer, that's why I ended up water-cooling everything with a custom loop.
    After that, the dreaded maintaining started: and that's why I ask to the producers here to study a better way to keep the radiators in your pc clean, because if there is not enough room to use e.g. a vacuum cleaner to clean the fins, the only way to clean them is to tear down your whole system, and since radiators are dust magnets their fins need to be cleaned at least once every 2 months to stay optimal.
    An air can most of the time is not enough, it pollutes a lot, and will make a mess if you use it in a small room because you can't move freely your pc, (e.g. because it's water-cooled with rigid tubing and it's heavy).
    That's why something that I would love to see more is dual chamber chassis, those will be the answer for water cooling and air cooling. For air cooling it will separate gpus from the motherboard, hence there will be less heat for both, and for water cooling it could be a place to easily access radiators, not just one 360...which is not enough for high overclocks at 25C+ with decent noise levels. At this time the only two cases that actually follow these rules to my knowledge are the lian li PC-012 for air, and the Thermaltake tower 900. These are some original cases with ideas that needs a bit of refinement, to actually be gamechangers.

    One of the things that bugs me about modern cases is the small amount of HDD mounts. I have an older mid tower with 11 mounts, today you are lucky if you can get 4. Add in some removable HDD mounts, you don't need 11 of them, just add three to the top front or sell them separately to go with the 3 under the PSU shroud.

      I remember taking a case back in the day and using a hole saw and those wire grills to add as many 80mm fans as possible. I had a case with 11 80mm blue led fans when 80mm fans were all that really existed. Sounded loud as hell but worked great and looked even better, it had a plexi window and I custom painted the interior with blue car paint. Even had 2 blue cold cathodes.
      I still use those exact same wire grills sometimes to mod cases, I will take airflow over anything even if it means I have to clean the dust out of my system more often.

My previous case was an HP Pavilion shell, real cheap with just super thin aluminum. Whenever I boot that system up it's so damn loud it bugs the hell out of me.

    Having recently built a PC in an old Antec Solo (the original one), I can confirm that the changes made to case design in the following years were hugely beneficial. On top of what you mentioned, standard 120mm and 140mm fan mounting points in all cases made a huge difference, as did moving the PSU to the bottom and creating HDD sleds that could easily take laptop drives.
    Now though, I don't see any reason to move on from my Obsidian 550D (an older case now). The best evolution I have seen recently is the addition of SSD mounting on the sides of cases, but the fact is that I did the same thing with a few pieces of double sided tape.
    I WOULD like to see more 200mm fans, mesh fronts and removable fan grilles (I had to remove mine with a dremel, which was very much worth it). Those are the things that make me think about changing cases.

    Wow, looks like H500P levels of build quality, there!
    In all seriousness, thank you guys for focusing on this issue with form over function. After watching your H500P review I noticed more and more how few reviewers are taking stuff like thermals into consideration with their videos, most just build in it and say what they like with a couple things they don't. This is how I ended up buying a Phanteks Eclipse P400TG. Agreed with reviewers that is looks good and is easy to work in, but the thing is an absolute hotbox with a Ryzen 1600X and undervolted Sapphire R9 Fury, which runs on the required custom fan curve with undervolting. I keep all 4 case fans (2 stock and 2 Silent Wings 3, all 120mm) and my Cryorig H7 Quad Lumi at 100% at all times because temperatures are so bad. I also keep the 1600X stock, which sits at 3.7 Ghz all cores rather than the 3.6 Ghz base clock.
    I tested my temperatures rather unscientifically using 1 round of 24 player team deathmatch in battlefield 1 with maxed settings with Cam's OSD running and noting the ballpark of the temperatures with all panels on, the front panel removed, and the front panel and side glass removed. With all the panels on I had around 68 to 69C on the CPU and 73ish on the GPU. Front panel removed dropped the CPU all the way down to 58ish and the GPU was barely above 60. Take the window off and the CPU further dropped by a couple C and the GPU never rose above 56C. I'm not suprised removing panels improves thermals, but i'm astonished at how much of a difference something as easy and quick as pulling the front panel off makes.

    Thank you so much for making this video! :) It was time to address this topic! In my eyes a case should have at least mounts for 2x 140mm in the front and top and 1x 140 in the back and in the bottom. Also all openings should be sealed against dust and have easy removable dust filters. I also have no problem with mesh because i use LED fans and i want them to be seen. Back in 2014 when i built my PC, i took the NZXT Phantom 630, because i wanted to air cool my system, so the 4 mounting spots for silent 200mm fans would be useful. I am satisfied with the case, especially with the 200mm fan mounted in the side panel blowing fresh air at my GPU and the dust filters everywhere. The only downside is the rather complicate cleaning of those filters and the front 200mm fan whitch is blocked half because of the designe choices NZXT made. Please Case Manufactures build cases that are good performing, easy to maintain and cool to look at. Everyone else sharing my oppinion here? :)

    thanks for the video steve...it's a shame case manufacturers do not consult more with youtube reviewers like GN or hardware canucks etc, actualy doing something as simple as this would suerly be a win/win situation for the company, consumer and the reviewer....they surely have R'n'D departments at these companies...but as we all know the first and formost thing any company has to think about is profit....so do case manufacturers even care if their cases have issues...surely they must test them before release and just like you surely they know these cases have faults or issues before they give the go ahead to enter production....it seems odd how they will bring new cases and ideas to computex or whichever show...claim their case can do this and do that with blah blah thermals etc...yet when they arrive at the case reviewers door...there are always so much more issues found...just for once i would like to see a case manufacturer consult with a builder and get the cut outs,cooling,placement and everything else perfectly placed within a case

    Dear GN - GREAT content. And case manufacturers had really better take notice. One of Antec's best cases, the P100, was the result of consulting with Mike Chin of silentpcreview - and that case ended up being the pioneer in a whole lot of design tech - for example, bottom mounted PSUs - that we take for granted today. Personally, i'm focused on quiet computing and 99% of the cases i see are simply appallingly bad in this respect.
