      My pc won't boot from the USB. When pressing F11, I can see uefi: usb and usb:usb ... If I select usb:usb it says "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot media"... The uefi option does nothing...HELP!!!

    Building your own computer is not just something to do to save money, but it is also an experience. It sounds weird when I say it, but it somehow connects you to your computer in a good way. You ordered the parts, you put them in, you did the cable management and in the end you look proudly at your work. My Ryzen system stands on my desk with a window on its side and from time to time I just enjoy looking at it.

      That would be a rush. My first home build computer was a 386. I've built about a dozen of them over time and usually screw something up in a Homer Simpson moment "DOH!". The key is to never panic, have a second computer connected to the internet for help, and if all else fails walk away to break out of your endless loop thinking. Attack it later with a fresh perspective. One of my first rookie mistakes was a small switch on the power supply that was set to 220 instead of 110 volts. I couldn't figure out why the damn thing didn't turn on. lmao

    Point of advice to all that was not mentioned in the video:
    When booting from USB to install Windows, DO NOT put your flash drive in a USB 3.0 slot or you'll get the Windows Installer asking you for a driver and not being able to proceed with the install.
    The reason for this, is that you have not installed your USB 3.0 drivers yet needed by your board for them to function properly!
    So, to be on the safe side, make sure to do your initial install from a 2.0 port.
    Hope that saves someone frustration and a headache. =)

      @@dug1963 you would need a bootable USB, watch a video how to install windows 10 using bootable usb. Basically, since your SSD is empty currently, you download windows 10 on the usb and boot from there, when you get into windows then you can transfer the files to the SSD an use the SSD. Hope this helps
      Oh and yes I forgot to answer the original question, get into the bios by clicking delete repeatedly, then Change the boot order so your usb is first, which will allow what I said above to happen :)

    • @jrsmithunited
      @jrsmithunited 8 років тому +1

      Wine doesnt work for everything. What it does work for isn't always stable. And when it is, it almost always has lower performance than on native windows. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough install base for people to support linux properly, either through wine or through native support.

    • @neek1534
      @neek1534 8 років тому +1

      That's the sad part. You have to use Windows for games.

    • @Mike_Hogsheart
      @Mike_Hogsheart 8 років тому +2

      I mean, you don't HAVE to use Windows to game, there are tons of games with native Linux versions, a lot of games that work just fine with wine and all the emulators you could ask for. Especially for older games there is a good chance that they will run better under Linux than they do under newer versions of Windows.
      For my gaming needs, Linux is totally fine. Like, I have a ton of games in my Library with native Linux support that I have never touched, because I just don't have the time to play all of them.
      That said, if you are the kind of gamer who is all about the newest AAA gaming titles, you probably want to have a Windows installation.
      Although it is totally possible for that Windows installation to run as a guest virtual machine on a Linux host, with hardware pass through. That way you can just run Windows alongside Linux without having to dual boot and with pretty much no loss in performance. Do all your browsing and everyday computing in Linux, fire up Windows when you feel like gaming (or keep it running in the background), best of both worlds. Does require some extra attention when purchasing hardware though (has to support virtualization) and you are going some Linux wizardry to pull it off, it's definitely not beginner friendly. But it can be done.

      Well it worked, it was just that I didn't seat the ram correctly. If you have any problems, that's the first place to start. Also, the 212 evo is just a pain to install on your own. I just replaced it with a h110i gtx and that was much easier to install, so it just depends on what you get. If you have someone to help with your cooler, it's a lot easier.

    I am a music teacher and am getting round to specing an £800 ish PC build for video editing for my UA-cam channel and music production. Not sure what to include other than basing it around some kind of Ryzen CPU. Last PC I built was about 15 years ago. The process seems a little simpler now bat hasn't changed much. There just seems to be much more in terms of component options. I think it will take a while to put my spec together... Any spec suggestions welcome...

      Lightning is a risk, there are two times when I've experienced this. A couple of years ago lightning struck nearby, it fried our phones. Last year, a similar thing happened, fried the router. It might not be a big risk, but it can happen. However, I've heard that the surge protection doesn't do much in such cases for some reason.

      Zed1967 Wouldn’t I just be fine connecting my pc to an outlet that’s in my wall? And also another quick question. I lived in the US but moved to Europe to go to college and I purchased my power supply in the US because it was cheaper. Would I be fine by just connecting the US plug into a connector that transforms from a US outlet into a European outlet? The max wattage on the one I have is about 3000 Watts. I haven’t used it yet I’m building my pc pretty soon. I also purchased just a random European power supply cable on eBay for a few bucks but I’m not sure if that would be 100 percent safe either compared to the power cable that came with my Corsair power supply. Sorry if it’s a lot I just need the question answered. Thank you.

He said it happens a lot with Windows 10. (He works in IT for a major media group.) When I put it in my PC it booted right off the USB without me doing anything. The first thing I learnt after building my updated PC last year was as follows.
    Test your brand new EVGA G2 1000w PSU outside of the case with the bridge connector.
    Or any PSU. Because the PSU blew on first switch on and took out an SSD in the system. I was very lucky not to have more damage.
    It tooks weeks to get it RMA'd and was not especially cheap to return. I bought the PSU because my EVGA 980Ti came with a 50% off deal on a PSU. So I went overboard and bought a much higher spec PSU than I had ever before. And it failed.

      Pretty much the worst thing was it was the first PC I had built in about 8 years. Going from a 775 based system to an X99. So, while a lot was familiar, a lot had changed. Complete rebuild with Predator 360 cooler (which had to be replaced as I had the V1.0) etc etc.
      Spent a good afternoon building it all into the Enthoo Primo case, tying everything off and making it tidy.
      Put it in place, had my face at the back of the case when I flipped the psu switch. It flashed in my face.
      Blew the fuse in the plug and tripped my mains fuse box. The smell of burnt electronics filled my room. I just sat down in a daze for about 30 seconds. I had no compatible parts to test and I was not about to risk the working 700w psu from the old PC. In case it was a different component that failed. I have to totally dismantle the PC and return the parts I bought from the retailer in person. To be checked. Luckily none of those parts were faulty. Only an SSD that was carried over from the old system. It worked fine previously.
      Realising it was the PSU and all the new parts otherwise had been tested as working. I bought an EVGA EQ 650W cheap PSU as a run till RMA. At the store. Built it when home and it all worked. RMA the G2 and it was replaced. Annoyingly, when I had the G2 back, I found out that the cables with the EQ and G series are not compatible. So I had to redo all the modular cables.
      Then in the timeline I had the recall notice about the EKWB 360 Pred...
      Then to make matters worse, I bought a couple of Sandisk 480 Ultra 2 SSDs and they failed 5 months later completely. Within a week of each other. Seems there was a faulty batch.
      I've had some very very bad luck with PCs this last year.

    • @mr.tomatohead5648
      @mr.tomatohead5648 8 років тому +2

      nah, a lot of people don't test their hardware before installing it, but this guy's story is a good example why you should. the bridge connection he's referring to is a connection bridging the green wire to a black wire on your 24pin connection of your psu. that will jump start your psu and get the fan to spin. I also like hooking up a case fan or lights to the psu to make sure they come on.

      search "win32diskimager" . This is a software program that everyone uses to write ISO and Image files to USB and SD cards. This will allow you to boot from the USB. You may have to go into BIOS to make sure the computer checks the USBs for a bootable device. Sometimes your computer is set to just look at the hard drives.

    First 5 things to do with a new build.
    1. Pray it posts. I mean really call upon what ever higher power you believe in that the silicon gods show you favor and the thing starts up. With all new components the odds are something could be bad out of the box and it can be a nightmare tracking it down on a new build.
    2. Look at the Bios. Don't go crazy with the bios at first. Start with default settings as much as you can. There will be plenty of time later after you know everything is stable to OC and go crazy.
    3. Install OS of choice. For most it will be Windows X or whatever latest version is at the time of build. Be sure to do all updates.
    4 Install Anti virus of choice, and all drivers, especially video drivers. Flash Bios if there is an update.
    5 Install software *Games and test the machine under load. Up to this point it's had it easy but now it's time to see how it does under some pressure.
    If you pass all 5 then you can go crazy.

Usually you'll see a splash screen right after you power on with the motherboard manufacturer's logo and the boot interrupt keys listed, usually at the bottom of the screen - Del for BIOS/UEFI, F11 for Boot Options etc.

      When you install windows you can click now to pay for it immediately and it'll give you like a trial for around 2 weeks. It's what I'm on currently, but at the due date windows will kick you off of their os until you finally get a product key.

      *Question!* _So connecting to your Monitor (or TV via HDMI), Keyboard and Mouse does not need "drivers" even when having a _*_newly custom built PC_*_ right?_
      _Because I'll be connecting my PC to my TV via HDMI and I've read about it that drivers are needed etc. and it made me confused... (Maybe drivers are needed only when using Graphics Card?)_
      _So will I be able to use a Monitor (or TV via HDMI), Keyboard and Mouse without installing drivers, so that I can use them to navigate through BIOS while having no Operating System?_
      _I won't be using Graphics Card by the way and I'll be installing Linux Mint instead of Windows._
      *_Newbie here..._*

    Thanks Paul, this vid was a big help. I completed my first build recently. When I had completed the build, I initially checked the BIOS as you suggested, before loading W10, and I could only see one stick of RAM, not two. So I swapped them around, and could still only see one (but now in a different slot). I might never have known I had one defective RAM stick if I hadn't done as you suggested. Then when installing W10, the 'clean disk' function you stepped through, was also a lifesaver for me. Thanks again.

    *I NEED HELP WITH HDD SETUP 29:02
    Hi,
    Recently I just finished building my first PC build. I configured the settings in the BIOS and got everything setup the way I wanted it to be. I have a 250 GB SSD as my boot device for Windows 10 and a WD 1TB HDD. Everything was working great! I went into disk management. The SSD(Disk 0) is showing up and the HDD(Disk 1) is shown as well, but the HDD wasn't showing up to where I could use it to store anything on it yet. So, I went ahead and did something to mess something up with it. Now, what is shown is only Disk 0(my SSD) and System Reserve(500 MB). How can I fix to make it show again and initialize it?

      If you still need help after 4 months.. check your Bios and see if it even recgonizes your HDD as a drive. If Not, then something is wrong with the connection. If it still isnt showing up, and you have made sure it's plugged in, reflash your bios

      For some motherboards (although it is becoming less common all the time) even the network adapter needs separate drivers for the network connection. And assuming you do not want overclocking, sometimes the auto settings for memory are incorrect and you need to override them to get what you have paid for.

    • @i_m_ash
      @i_m_ash 6 років тому

      You need drivers for all your hardware to work, like graphic card, sound card, video card, keyboards, mouse, etc. Windows 10 can provide you with default drivers, which works in most cases. But in some cases, they are outdated or doesn't work at all. For example, Windows 10 can provide you with out-of-date Nvidia graphic card drivers. So, you will need to install your graphic card drivers from Nvidia's website, or install GeForce Experience, which can detect and easily update your graphic card.

      10,000 subscribers without any videos!!! You need a chipset driver, sound driver and the Intel management engine to make sure those respective hardware are working because as he describe, windows 10 installer still doesn’t have all the essentials it needs to talk to those external peripherals and stuff

      Whether they think it's better or worse than 7 has nothing to do with it. Microsoft allows you to download and create the installation media for Win 7 / 8 / 10 for free, and they've had this for quite some time now. You will still need a license key in order to activate it.

      Could be a problem with either the ports or the stick. Use a know good memory stick then try it in each port. If it isn't showing up in the BIOS/UEFI screens after trying all of your ports then you are out of luck.
      Either the stick is dead or your ports are.

    Hey I just wanted to say thanks for making this video. I watched it after I watched bitwits PC building video and it helped me navigate the UEFI to find out where to install bios updates from a flash drive and I found some of your miscellaneous tips for tweaking windows 10 helpful. This is the first PC I've built and I watched your videos a lot when I was planning my components because I really trust that you're genuine when you give advice. I watched JayzTwoCents afterwords to follow some basic overclocking tips and everything is running really well. I think it's cool that there's such a great community and your guys videos compliment each other so well when people are approaching something like this that can be complicated the first time you do it. Thank you very much, and for what it's worth I think most people are generally good too.

      MDG Gaming - Install paths are your friend. :-) You can change the default path in the RegEdit, but some programs ignore it and install on the C drive no matter what. Plus if you change that part of the registry, Windows can't install updates.
