Aside from the MMO FF14, every recent new entry seems to be selling less and less, and beyond things like exclusivity having some negative impact, there's a general sense that Final Fantasy is only appealing to nostalgic fans as constant reinventions like FF16's much different tone and gameplay alienate old fans who feel recent entries have been to much of a departure while being unable to attract new fans from the masses. The inconsistent identity of Final Fantasy has been a topic of discussion and I think one worth exploring.

    1. Timed exclusive on an expensive platform that I have no interest in buying. Delaying PC release for 2 years+.
    2. released on PC, and Epic will hold hostage for another 6-12 months.
    3. Released on steam, the price is so high that I wait for sales. By then, forgotten about it or moved onto other games.
4.Finally get it on sale. Its a bit of a mess, its ok and other RPGs have surpassed it while waiting for FF on steam.
    5. Next installment comes up, starting process over again.
    6. PC gamers are now playing RPGs like Elden Ring and Balders Gate 3 made by companies actually care about their customers.

These are months old bulshit claims that SE is repeating after waiting a while after they were laughed at for making the same claim before. Both games sold well above their average internal targets and made a huge profit. These "expectations" are from executives who intentionally stacked it higher and delusionally hoped both games would sell so much that it would make up for all the multiple other fuck ups and failures Square Enix has made in other sectors.
The first time they claimed that, that number would not have been reached even if every ps5 owner at the time would have bought FFXVI

I think the quality simply isn't there. I never understood why FF16 got such high review scores. I think the game is mediocre. The world is tiny - you go back and forth between 4 locations with basically no exploration and nothing to discover. The combat is flashy but incredibly shallow (save 2 or 3 all the abilities just do damage - there's no way to control the battlefield, no significant ways to affect your character's performance in battle and since you have a single weapon type the variety isn't there either). The side missions are some of the worse in any game (not only in FF) and apart from the prologue and the last 2-3 hours the story isn't all that compelling either. I think a lot more people have a similar view of the game and word gets around.
As far as the second part of the FF7R goes - I think that game simply has too many issues with pacing and technical problems that it drives people away. I don't think the open-world segments do it any favours either.

They make games with a eastern audience in mind, ship it off globally and, shocker, no one bites, or at least not enough do. Square is unfortunately padded with a bunch of directors that want to chase current trends instead of the mindset that final fantasy was built on. When final fantasy 9 it wasn't created with the mindset that it was going to push the limit of realism it was creates to be a fun enjoyable experience. During production sure the director had to deal with the death of his mother which effected some of the story directions. But the point wasn't to chase what was popular.
Turn based games are not something of the past, while I do like the ff7 reboot I am tired of the fact that final fantasy is being turned into this franchise that needs to pad out its story instead of creating enjoyable stories its just padding them out and making them long with simplistic mechanics that don't compliment and engage it. I feel like FF16, because they just flat cut out so many rpg systems and has really boring side content and super bosses only via dlc, it definitely was a game that A LOT of people just watched someone else playing through for the story experience instead of buying it themselves. At the end of the day, that was the only thing left in the game with all the shallow systems, which a FF usually innovates on.
For Rebirth: I know many people don't want to hear it, but it is just simply SUCH a divisive title. As a fan you either HATE it or love it after how the Remake ending turned out and how the beloved story was being changed... The Remake hype was carried by every FF fan under the sun and after it was done, there was fans abolishing the series completely. It shouldn't have been that alienating and stupid in (re)writing.

I think the the issue is that Square is trying to milk Final Fantasy with very high expectations to make up for the bad performances of other games they published in recent years.
Baldur's Gate 3 and Persona 5 are proof that turn based games are not dead and people will play them if it is fun and engaging. And that's what Final Fantasy used to be: a fun and engaging turn based game. They can retain the original fans and capture new fans if Square makes Final Fantasy what it was best known for, and release them on all platforms day one, optimized.

Persona 5 is a bad example. It made money because it had a relatively low budget, making up for it with its stylish art direction. But sales wise it was still pretty niche.
Whenever Atlus talks about P5 sales numbers, they always include the sales of all spinoffs to show numbers that are at least close to the sales numbers expected from a AAA game. That's not exactly a good sign, specially considering there are like 3 or 4 P5 spinoff games depending on how you count. If P5 was really as successful as you say it is, it wouldn't need to do such a slide of hand.
The only way for Square is to severely reduce budgets for the FF series, with a severe downgrade in graphic quality and presentation. Which even leaving aside how humiliating that'd likely be for them, I don't believe for a second fans would accept that.

The other half of the core problem is their butchering of the narrative of course. From what I've seen over the years here's Square Enix's biggest problems in no particular order.
Blowing their budgets out of control with extravagant graphics while letting the writing quality drop like the Sector Seven plate since FF12 or 10-2.
The focus on graphics causing development time to grow out of control while neglecting releasing smaller games to fill in the gaps.
The fallout of FF13 and its sequels, Lighting Returns is one of the biggest disasters in the history of the franchise, selling even less than the original Final Fantasy and the series has yet to recover from the Fabula Nova Crystalis' disastrous sales.
The quality of the writing, just look at the 13's and Forespoken. (And to some extent Kingdom Hearts but in that game's case it at least knows it's dumb and rolls with it while 13 and Forespoken took themselves waaaay to seriously.)
Any of the I.P's that Square could have used to fill out the gaps in time between the tentpole releases got sold off for NFT magic beans.
Square Enix's mobile gatcha games and greedy ass price gouging driving their PR and rep with fans down the toilet.
    Anything else I'm missing?

I see there's people here saying console exclusivity didn't hurt Final Fantasy in "the good 'ol days." That's because in the 1990s and early 2000s, the Playstation 1 and 2 were clear and dominant consoles (I'm saying this as an old Sega fan) in their heyday. Wikipedia actually has an interesting page on "List of best-selling game consoles." The access to players between Sega, Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony console bases were not anywhere close and it favored Sony. Playstation 2 was and still is the biggest selling console EVER. This was why FF exclusive to the Sony consoles in the 90s and early 2000s never hurt the franchise.
Playstation 1 (1994) had 102.4 million units sold . The Sega Saturn (1994) 9.2 million units. Nintendo 64 (1996) had 32.9 million units. These were the big 3 consoles of the mid and rest of the 1990s and the competition wasn't even close. PS1 dominated.
Sony's domination would be clearer with the early Playstation 2 (2000), which still holds the record for most unit sales at more than 155 million units sold. Sega Dreamcast (1998) sold 9.3 million units. This was terrible considering the Dreamcast beat the Playstation 2 to the market by two years. This was where Sega threw in the towel in the console wars. Nintendo Game Cube (2001) 21.7 million units. Microsoft XBox (2001) had 24 million.
Through these periods Square's FF franchise was synonymous with Sony. Yeah, stuff like FF7 and FF8 came to other consoles, but only years after the primary release. With Sony having so many players for their consoles, Square could tap into the biggest console base possible.
Today? Playstation 5 so far has sold 61.7 million units and has been out since 2020. Microsoft's XBox Series X/S have 28.3 million units sold. MS has thrown in the towel recently for the console wars. These numbers as a whole are pathetic compared to how consoles sold more during the 1990s and 2000s, even for Sony.
In today's gaming, if you're making an expensive AAA game and you're limiting by platforms, you're only hurting yourself. The consoles of today are not widespread like the "Good 'ol days" of consoles.

@@Lithenius I think putting the blame on the players is kinda silly, to be honest, and implies that loyalty to a series is more important than the developers of the series actually making games you want to play.
It's not "fans" who are at fault if a game series stops appealing to them, so they stop buying it, and it dies: it's the devs (likely the suits behind them to be fair) who make the choices that lead to the fans losing enthusiasm.
Literally the only tool that works for "consumers" to alter markets is to vote with our wallets. Buying games we don't like out of brand loyalty just tells companies it's okay to exploit us and ignore what we want, because they're certainly not concerned about forum posts or UA-cam comments.

Square Enix needs to stop making all their games PS5 exclusive at launch. That console was heavily scalped and went through a chip shortage and Final Fantasy fans are mostly on PC now where their main MMO is, and on top of all that console sales are in huge decline in Japan. Whatever Sony is paying them isn't enough.

The FF series definitely has an identity crisis. Square Enix should just stop taking risks and just make good games just like what Team Asano (Developers of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, and many more games), and the Dragon Quest team have been doing. Making great games that fans want and that stays true to their Japanese gameplay roots. This whole thing for the higher ups at Square (Nomura and Yoshi-P) of taking risks, chasing trends, westernizing their games, these ugly photorealistic graphics, them wanting to push the limits of technology, their insane development budgets, these unrealistic expectations, and them just milking FF7 is why Square is struggling and the games are failing. The reason for FF7R and FF16's failure is one because it's exclusive to PS. Square being yanked by the neck by Sony's dog leash every time. But also because they're not selling well in Japan and no one cares about FF and what the series has become. They keep catering to the wrong type of audience that don't even play those games. Not only that, but Square keeps ignoring Nintendo's success especially in Japan with the Switch. Square Enix should learn from developer MonolithSoft (Developers of Xenoblade). It's like Square completely ignores the success of their earlier FF games (FF1 - FF6, FF9 and FF10) and games like Dragon Quest, Pokemon, Octopath Traveler, Persona, Sea of Stars, Super Mario RPG Remake, even Yakuza Like A Dragon to some extent, and why fans especially fans in Japan like those games and what made them fun.
PlayerEssence explained things in his recent video and he is absolutely right with what he was talking about.

Haven't played anything since 13, the 14 MMO isn't my thing. But from what I saw 15 and 16 were final fantasy in terms of brand, visuals, oddness, and gameplay even if it diverged too far for the taste of most older fans, and not many major complaints about the story.
But also nothing... noteworthy. No one was ever raving about 15 or 16 for long, none of the characters reached out to be memorable enough to capture the fanbase.
And the big one for many like me is because they had so much of the series identity reduced to.. a boy outing. For some god forsaken reason some higher ups genuinely thought that the diversity of interesting characters and strong women among the main characters was the reason 13 was badly received. And since then all we get is pretty boys, and bigger pretty men.
I kinda lost the "fantasy" reason to play, I liked having women in the main group to live through, or at least some weird robots or animals.

But Nintendo had an issue with developers leaving for a better platform, because they felt like it was more honorable to stay with inferior products to show how important their bond is.
While I'm sure Square worry about avoiding such fallouts now, it was still all on Nintendo really and nothing wrong with what Square was doing. All they need to do now is to sell on all platforms because it is better for them, and hope Sony understands and aren't throwing a fit like Nintendo.

For Square the timed exclusives is the biggest hit. Console exclusives arn't really a thing now with Nintendo being the only hold-out and with the level of saturation of games of all genres we have now by the time a console exclusive game comes out on PC there has already been several games which have been out during that exclusive period which scratch that itch.
The other part is the identity. Yeah there are simularities within each games (Names and looks of the summons, character names etc) but those don't resonate as much as say gameplay style. As Yong said You can reconise a FromSoft game because of its staples, the big one being the gameplay. with an every shifting gameplay there is the risk of losing fans because the franchise switches genre completly and not leaving an alternitive (EG, How Yakuza changed to turn based but has the Judgement Series as a replacement to the Beat-em-up Yakuzas)
I think Square would benefit to keeping the mainline Final Fantasy games (Sans MMOS) to the older turnbased gameplay style ala 7 - 12 and do something similar to Dissidia for their more experimental playstyle: Have those more experimental/ alternitive playstyle games in their own separate Final Fantasy series, connected by name but clearly different in customer expectations

Right, some things to note about them separately for why both games are struggling to attract new audiences.
For FFXVI, new action games are actually a much more harder sell for people than most will realize as it's quite a barrier to entry as there's quite a high level of expectations that only the very skilled can determine if it gets right or not, so many newcomers will be hesitant to touch it unless it's from a series with a pretty strong pedigree that know they could trust (SoulsBorne, CoD, AC, MH Yakuza ect). It's why turn based stuff is on the rise as that's less taxing on the player to get use to it.
Also FFXVI's pre-release hype was riding on the tailcoats of CU3's strong reputation and many was hoping it'll live up to FFXIV's own stella status, however that ended up not being the case, that while it was not overtly negative the general consensus was that it's "the team's weakest work yet" Which would definitely put off a lot of people from trying it.
For FFXVI Rebirth's problems, it's quite simply the matter of that sequels tend to fall behind than it's predecessors, a lot of the hype of Remake was because it rode on the hype of it being a highly anticipated highly requested remake of a famous game. So with Rebirth, people knew what they were expecting so they were less (but not devoid of) hyped for it. Plus partly related but is like what you said about it being more of a new-time than a one-to-one retelling, it pretty much requires those who played the original to get better understanding of what's going on in this new continuity, and that is definitely going to be quite uninviting for newcomers.
Also this is starting to dawn on me, but I'm now of the belief that people like myself who prefer to wait until the trilogy is completed, might be a more significant number of people than I realized. Something Square really should of considered.
Overall that yeah I hate to admit, sans FFXIV, the Final Fantasy series is in a sorry state right now which is a cause for concern for the company's future...
Personally speaking, I hope that Expedition 33 & Metaphor does really well to convince Square to go back to its actually safer roots and (as doubtful this is) to take the L by just admitting to their investors that Final Fantasy was never really a big mega franchise to begin with, and that going for huge production values for a RPG just isn't gonna cut it.
But we'll wait and see what the future actually holds.

5:33 I severely doubt that 'the only people buying the FF games now are crusties'. All of the crusties that I know, myself included, are extremely pissed-off by the direction the series has gone in.
Remake got a huge nostalgia-based sales boost simply by virtue of what is was, (or at least was _purporting_ to be) that's clear, but otherwise, nah.
The reality is S-E has alienated and lost what should have been its core consumers because of two decades of underperformance of the single-player games. The core FF player these days is a FFXIV player who might dabble a bit in the single player games. The series has no core single player base.

Pretty much this. The last mainline FF i bought was XIII, the last FF i played was World of Final Fantasy which despite it´s flaws was a great call back to older FF titles. I haven´t enjoyed a mainline FF since X that came out over 20 years ago. Square has been chasing the western RPG and Normie crowd so hard that they alienated their original fans who like their games turn-based or some kind of ATB. The crowd is still there they just went on to play other games like Persona/SMT or the Trails-series because despite what SE might think graphics aren´t everything if the rest of your games feel hollow and unpolished.

You have an entire year for people physically unable to play the game, and who will probably watch a playthough then will never buy it themselves. Exclusivity hurts games.

I understand where you’re coming from but it would not be possible to recreate FF7 in modern standards with only one game. For example, when you would play old FF games you could walk around the entire map in just a few minutes. Cities were tiny dots on the map smaller than your character until you walked to them and loaded in. You cannot recreate all of that on a more realistic scale all within 1 game.

I get what you're saying but you are misunderstanding what they are doing. Not your fault, blame it on marketing or whatever, but trust me as someone who has finished both parts I can tell you both are fully fleshed out stories and experiences. They are full games, not one third of a game at all.

I started to lose faith in "final fantasy" when they started putting out only half a game, anouncing that they'd finish it with expansions and DLC. Then when they canceled the DLC, and hid the actual ending of the game in a book... well...

I was super excited about the FF7 Remake until I found out they changed the story, didn't buy it.
I was super excited about FFXVI.. until I found out they completely changed the genre (If I wanted Devil May Cry, I'll play Devil May Cry), so I didn't buy it.
I have bought every Final Fantasy from 1 to 15. Every single one. Look at how Larian studios are praised, that use to be Square!
Final Fantasy was always a complete package, role playing game.
FF13-2 ended on a "to be continued" with no real ending. The first time I felt slighted.
FF15 literally had characters disappear for important story beats and come back being like "Oh don't worry about that, it'll be in the DLC wink wink". The second time I felt slighted
FF7 Remake spat on the old fans. We just wanted FF7. That's it!
And FF16 isn't even a role playing game anymore. It's a DmC game with a rpg skin.
They've pushed every super loyal old fan away and the young people flock to defend it because they don't know any better by todays standards.

The two FF MMOs are still doing well. Despite it's age, FF11 has a consistent and dedicated subscriber base that actually wound up funding the development of FF14. In fact, SE tried to use 14 to kill 11 but 11's community said "fuck you too, buddy" and kept on trucking. 11 is still going even now and is highly suggested. Just don't expect the theme park thrills you'd find in 14. 11 is a pre-cash shop game, and very much a product of it's time.

As someone who has a PS5 and have played a lot of old FF games, the problem for me is the writing in all honesty. FF7 is my fav game of all time. The original, not the remake. And while I enjoy the gameplay, the writing and the world is what got me hooked. But as the presentation of the games get better I expect more from them. An old rpg with blocky graphics and goofy characters, the goofy dialogue comes across different and doesn't bother me. But in FF7 remake so much of it is so cringy. I'll prolly get FF7 rebirth and ff16 eventually for cheap in my local used game store, but I'm in no hurry to spend 70 dollars on them....
