      Pfft, even if you try making the best content you could possibly think of they wouldn't even rank on search pages. YT nowadays is mainly about luck. Hard work doesn't seem to pay off anymore unless you're doing some shady work.

    • @the-lowdown
      @the-lowdown 7 років тому +14

      It's not an issue. They've purposely made a small amount of your subs view your vids to see what traction it gets. If your subs are engaging with your content, YT feeds the video to more subs and the processes begins again.
      Just because somebody sub's to your channel, doesn't mean they will enjoy every single piece of content you produce, thus why the above process has been implemented.

    It's now impossible to grow a channel with the continuous AL changes. Yet the Trending Page is littered with brand names and Disney trailers. It's not the UA-cam I remember when I started 10 years ago where an everyday person could become famous overnight. I'm tired of the continue funneling of what's obvious paid placement in suggested video lists. I never see stuff from the core HARD WORKING community anymore. Shame on you..Shame.

Analyze people around you, TV, go on streets and see that everyone is bored of life because they create their dream world and believe they deserve it by doing nothing.

    The algorithm works quarterly. From the side of the author I can safely say that the service has become much worse. Not only did you do automatic moderation, which works incorrectly. There is no way to challenge the robot's decisions. I have been waiting for 3 months for a response from a living person. Algorithms had to be tuned to emulation, you do not respect the work of the authors.

    I have two channels. One which is suffering from the algorithm and one which is benefiting from it. I guess since there are so many variables and so many changes happening so frequently, we UA-camrs can only create our content to the best of our abilities and hope for the best. From a Creator's standpoint though, it makes UA-cam a platform that is rather volatile and a career choice we don't feel confident we have much control over.

    You offer the opportunity to translate the title and description of the videos.
    But if we do a search with the terms translated we do not find the videos.
    Videos are referenced only for the first language. Not for other languages.
    It's a shame because all of these efforts to translate the videos are ultimately useless.

      Indeed: my channel is multi-lingual. depending on the content or the language spoken, the "video language" can be either German, English, French or Spanish. I therefore take the trouble of offering title, description, subtitles in several languages, sometimes even more the then 4 I just mentioned. And then, when I view the analytics, I note that that effort is often of no avail.. Therefore: I agree, there should be better connection between youtube search and and the content/description of a video

    I have just ONE question for UA-cam, and it has always been the same through the years: we all know you need at least 100.000 subscribers to get that verification checkmark, however how come A LOT of channels do have it even though their number of subscribers is way less than that? Even this channel is verified, but it is just at 12K. Yes, I know a lot of channels were able to get that in the past just by asking their networks, however, how come so many channels with the verification mark have just recently been opened? Like in 2016. At first, I thought they were like "official channels", recognized by UA-cam. And so you, Creator Insider. But then I look at the description, and you say: "Please note this is not an official UA-cam channel and is an experiment". Ok, so.. How did you get that verification checkmark with less than 100K? I'm asking to everybody, since I see some in the comments as well. One guy is just at 4K subscribers and has a verification mark. What's going on here?

    I'm completely sad with this new algorithm. I had multiple videos go viral literally gaining 6-7k views per hour then suddenly in a single hour have them drop to 500-600 views per hour. It happens so frequently that it almost feels like it's on purpose. Like how exactly is a video supposed to fluctuate that much in such a short period of time? I had 4 videos do the same thing in the same day almost at the same time. I truly question the honesty regarding this algorithm because it saddens me to see that small channels, have less chances of growing on UA-cam now unless they are literally uploading content related to other big UA-camrs or music from popular artists like Reaction videos.

    Speaking as a consumer of youtube, not a content creator, the "not interested" option becomes like a game of whack-a-mole; I'll continuously say I'm not interested, but it just keeps popping up over and over. They keep pushing things that might be passive/veg out entertainment, but not a lot of new discoveries of stuff that I would like or get hooked into. Like, the same clickbait infotainment stuff will pop up, and I feel like youtube is giving me a homework assignment or something.
    But then I'll watch stuff that I do watch but isn't optimized the best by the creators (like, say, old Sesame Street videos, or well-done essays) and I'll always have to search for the content instead of it popping up organically.
    I think it's frustrating and leads to a disappointing experience.

    I've been on UA-cam for 10 years now, creating content. Whilst my videos over the years have never "blown up", they've never struggled to get out there. Now with the Algorithm nowadays, content creators especially the small ones are experiencing growth stunts. I believe the Algorithm and the Sub boxes have some problems with them.
    PewDiePie has over 57 Million subscribers, he is currently the largest channel on UA-cam, but when you look at his view ratio compared to his subscriber ratio, that's very minuscule to say the least.
    Another example is I have 575 subscribers, which is no small sum by any means, but when you look at how many views I get 10/575 views per video, isn't fantastic, hell sometimes my videos struggle to reach 10 views. The sub box most definitely isn't working. I tested this by subscribing to myself for 1 month and every time I uploaded, it would take 2-3 DAYS to reach sub boxes, bare in mind, my alt account was only subscribed to the Destron channel. I myself have also been told that my videos do not reach sub boxes or get recommended.
    A suggestion on how I feel like UA-cam can help out channels: a discover tab. Instead of giving more publicity to the big boys that aren't struggling in the slightest to get views / likes by putting them on the Trending tab, make a discover tab; this tab can filter for what people are looking for. An example: I want a new gaming channel to watch, that's under 1,000 subscribers, enter those details and the algorithm searches the database to match those queries.
    I get that big channels make UA-cam more money than a 500 subs channel would, but think about this, grow some big channels, then more people will see more ads and then we all win.

    • @Gamelisk
      @Gamelisk 7 років тому +5

      Well said. I have more than 5000 subscribers, but getting 100 views on new video is a task for several months. Also my channel is getting thousands of views every month, but only about 150-200 views come from subscribers. I don't get it :D

    14:10 this is very important...it's called "view velocity" and what this means is that bigger UA-camrs will almost always win this metric at first. HOWEVER, it does die out over time so older videos will start to lose over newer content.

    Ok, I have a query about your “iPhone metadata” example. So a video that uses ‘iPhone’ in all it’s titles/tags/etc won’t necessarily rank in search because you don’t just look at metadata but also at how viewers respond to the video. I understand the importance of using both sets of data but surely if video doesn’t show up for it’s intended keyword in search then no-one will be able to see that video to have a positive reaction for it. You could have the greatest video about iPhones the world has ever seen but it’s stuck at the bottom of the search results and since very few people will dig down far enough to find it it'll probably stay there.
    Seems like you’ve built yourselves a bit of a Catch-22.

      That's my thinking as well. It's a shame. When I type a keyword or keywords, I want the most relevant video regardless of anything else. On the other side of the table as a creator, my videos now get 1/2 the views they used to, since this algorithm overhaul. It's sad because I've worked hard to improve and make my content unique and now it's getting shuffled to the bottom.

    Hey Tom and Todd! Thanks for the insight on how things work "inside" YT. There's one question I struggle to find an answer to and it didn't really come up in those three ones of this mini series:
    If a channel is "old" and hasn't been used for many years and then the creator decides to upload more frequently (really start the channel) - does "the algorithm" judge the channel by it's average performance over all those years or does the over all performance of a channel not influence how the algorithm treats the later uploads.
    (If You need an example You could look at my channel since I was on YT almost "from the beginning" but only really started grinding a year ago.)
    Keep rocking!

And I get to experience something slightly different and a lot of my new subscriptions come from that page. It has gotten to the point where I almost feel we are on the same page to my interests. I think that is pretty neat. Though a suggested video on Laziness popped up last week on my page and I took offence. Like UA-cam was talking to me. Ha Ha!

    All of this detailed analysis into what youtube promotes is wonderful. The only problem is that this is the sole way a video is promoted. There used to be a "share" feature. When I liked a video, all of my subscribers could see and were notified in the all activity tab resulting in that video getting thousands of views. If users liked a video, naturally it got lots of views. Now this algorithm plays dictator, telling us "We try to give you what you like!" instead of just letting us have what we like, naturally. The old youtube was much more of a democracy.

    UA-cam never listens. UA-cam changes these algorithms to suit themselves. I have been on UA-cam for almost 11 years and since the introduction of the algorithms, my views, revenue and ability to get my videos to my subscribers have been affected. UA-cam is now only interested in the 18 to 24 market whilst pandering to the big corporations. I was even advised by a UA-cam employee (Partner Manager) last year to rename all my videos...this year UA-cam approached me again and told me I should not have done that. Algorithms can be altered to favour certain demographics, which goes for publishers as well as general users. Now the ad revenue is dwindling, so the money pot is not so big. The algorithms ensure that those at the top of the 'chain' get to keep their snouts firmly in the trough. The recent heavy handed censorship on this site is merely another nail in the coffin of the original UA-cam concept. Broadcast yourself my arse!

    Regarding suggested videos, if they're tailored to "what i like to watch" or "what my subscribers watch", then why is it that i can watch a single video form a single UA-cam content creator, and then their videos will litter my recommended for the next few weeks? I love to watch (and frequently watch) creative videos, DIYs, videos where i get to see the UA-camr's personality rather than a popular video produced to gain views and all, but they're never recommended to me - only very mainstream videos that I really dislike.
    Over the past few months the recommended page has been useless and quite a pain as it is no longer effective for myself personally, leading me to wonder if this whole "data collection" "super duper effective" recommendation thing really works, or if its just pushing certain types of content or certain people?
    Linking to this, some very creative videos from very creative, original non-mainstream UA-camrs have been demonetised, pushed down in rankings and are never suggested. Their channels are crashing down because of this.
    Also, you talked about these surveys. My friends and myself haven't seen any? I'd like to ask what demographic they're sent out to etc because maybe this is why so many people are having issues with recommended/suggested videos.

    So according to 4:42, new algorithm now looks not only for watch time. It also looks for Likes, Dislikes and Comments to suggest video or rate it upper on the search. Is this correct? Because for long time UA-cam experts like Derral Eves telling us that, likes, dislikes and comments mean nothing for the robot. They are only tool for viewers to communicate and engage with the channel. Thanks for your answer.

    I know this may fall on the wrong ears but I figured i'd ask. Has there been a shift in the new Machine learning for demonetization? Seems myself and others have been hit with another wave recently and with no obvious cues as to why things have been demonetized I'm thinking it may be something new picked up by googles advanced machine learning that's misfiring.

    • @RangeWilson
      @RangeWilson 7 років тому +3

      They have recently rolled out an appeal process for "soft demonetization" (the yellow $) and the way they train the algorithm is to make it strict at first, then have it learn from appeals. So there is definitely a wave happening right now.

    • @creatorinsider

    • @TheDirectorsOfGaming
      @TheDirectorsOfGaming 7 років тому +2

      The answer is no, the only thing that was changed is that they are being more transparent and revealing to creators which videos have limited or no ads based on certain kinds of content that may not be suitable for all kinds of advertisers.
      2 days ago I had 91 videos get the circular yellow dollar symbol... did the algorithm suddenly misfire on me and thousands of other channels at the same time? ...No, as I read the article and understood that this was likely already in place behind the scenes at least from when the "adpocalypse" occurred and what simply occurred based on creator feedback was that it was "revealed" to thousands of channels at once whether certain videos were in a limited category or not as far as AdWords goes... as it has been rolling out for about a week or two since the article came out. This means that we now get to appeal them and use the human response they get to teach the AI over time and therefore prevent mistaken demonetizations in the future.
      Ironically what revealing this information and giving us an avenue for appealing did was cause utter paranoia and misunderstanding from people who simply didn't read the article who believed that UA-cam was deliberately targeting groups of people and demonetizing their videos all at once... I hope that doesn't change their mind about giving creators more information and control in the future.

    Keep it real. The same commercial "channels" (actually corporations) trending 24/7 I can even take my time and list some for you... and no matter when you will see this comment and go on trending tab that is "not payed" you will see one or multiple of things that I just listed.
    Vevo, Late Night Shows (Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live, LastWeekTonight etc.....different names, same corporate company - HBO) , BBC for Kids aka Brave Wilderness, BuzzFeed, CBS News, The View, Vox
    When you will go on a trending tab and not see them, then yt trending is not payed.... rn it was so inappropriate for Todd to deny this fact. Trending tab is not because something is about to trend.... but because someone need that to trend.
    Is it possible to make a restriction for the same channels not to trend more than at least one month? Or it should be renamed UA-camTV so ppl will not confuse that with real independent content creators.

    • @audreybillings3339
      @audreybillings3339 7 років тому +9

      It doesn't surprise me that some commercial channels would be in trending based on the criteria he mentions about having a broad audience and being talked about on the web.
      I am not sure what country you're in, but in the US, I see a lot of non-corporate channels in the trending list right now: First We Feast, Collin Abroadcast, ThreadBanger, AsapSCIENCE, Jaclyn Hill, Matt Stonie, Shay Mitchell, ExplosmEntertainment, Abroad in Japan, Desi Perkins, boogie2988, Channel Awesome, Shane, The School of Life, Carli Bybel, Tiffany Willis, PewDiePie, watch life 3, Wong Fu Productions, Matthew Roberts, CupcakeJemma, doddleodle, Numberphile, Jeremy Gabrysch, Grace Helbig,... That's half the list right there, and I haven't even heard of half of these channels before.

    • @inarisound
      @inarisound 7 років тому +3

      That's the problem that I am trying to address! Big corporations like this just "promote" (subboting) their stuff on different social medias and constantly get on trending, in order to eliminate that there needs to be rule to not trend the same sources more than once a month!
      btw idk why I am not getting notifications that someone replied to me.... another issues with yt but that is a different topic.

    • @inarisound
      @inarisound 7 років тому +1

      imgur.com/bbKS3hl
      imgur.com/sIzLhwY
      Commercial on top of commercial with corporations dominating this tab.... it's just unfair to call it this way if the majority of the content is not even coming from youtubers that put their time and soul in order to engage with new audience .

    • @inarisound
      @inarisound 7 років тому +3

      I wish you truly understood what you just said.... the name of this website btw UA-cam..... not TVtube... and no I know in fact I am not the only one who is only watching independent content creators because everyone is tired of scripted opinions that are shoved in your face.....
      UA-cam became what it is now - "giant company", because of independent creators. Not because it was streaming TV shows! If you want to watch TV shows buy cable network or use UA-camRed.... but don't bs ppl that trending is not rigged when other "giant companies" just abusing current system and Google don't do anything cuz most likely they are in the share anyways.

    • @audreybillings3339
      @audreybillings3339 7 років тому +5

      The trending section is not about YOU. It's about the watercooler content. Seems like a lot of people on UA-cam enjoy watching mainstream content. It is no surprise to me that trending includes a good bit of that given how popular it is (but as I listed, it also includes dozens of results which aren't from corporate channels). It seems like you want a different feature that highlights only independent channels and filters out popular mainstream content. In the meantime, you'll probably be less angry if you just ignore the trending section like most others do and focus on the subscriptions and homepage sections which are personalized to YOU.

  • @krtwood
    @krtwood 7 років тому +1

    There's no depth to the suggestions on the Home page and nowhere else you can get broad results on a vague topic, say for example my category of woodworking. It makes sense that if you just search for woodworking you are going to get results from the most appealing channels that the audience respond to. So you can't really search for it, but that makes it very difficult to discover new content. The home page always suggests to me the same videos from the same channels that I am already subscribed to that I already decided not to watch and old videos from the same few channels that I am already subscribed to. There's tons of content on youtube that I would give a chance but there's no way to actually find it even when you are actively looking for it. There really needs to be a space somewhere dedicated to discovering new channels. I've had people tell me on Instagram that they are subscribed to hundreds of channels like mine but only found me on Instagram, even though I've been around for years and had videos perform well for my category.

    I can't remember which video it was, but in one of those posted by this channel it assures us that frequency of posting does not affect the algorithm or how many viewers will be offered our videos. It said taking a break would not affect anything and not to worry about maintaining if we need a break. Today, I got a tip from the Analytics page that the recent drop in viewership is "probably due to fewer videos being uploaded recently". So it DOES matter. I'm getting half the average views I was when I posted more regularly. I mean, the factors aren't just kept from us, we're actively mislead.

    Great information, thank you.
    I would love to see a change in the algorithm, however, that helps to drive original content rather than the thousands of variations on a trending topic. Would be great to not have to make several variations of fidget spinner, 1,000 degree knife, 100 layer, etc. videos in an effort to get UA-cam to push your channel out. Trends can definitely be nice but I'd rather see creators rewarded for the effort they put into their own original content.
