    Why do good performing videos suddenly die after a few hours and never recover? If a video performs well and has all the green arrows signalling to UA-cam that people have shown interest in the video, that video in question should continue to perform well, not suddenly go to 0 views and die a million deaths. The old UA-cam system never had that problem, good performing videos stayed that way, but the current system just kills off good performing videos for seemingly no reason. I've had so many videos blow up and then die the same day even with good video stats.

      I’d start by looking at the topic of the video, and the competition for that topic. Is UA-cam flooded with videos on that topic, or is the topic not that sort after? The rules of supply and demand apply. That goes for TAM (Total addressable market) - how many people are interested in that topic? And how many are interested in that topic right now?

    3:30 There's a huge, fundamental oversight with this logic and system. Video performance lives and dies on momentum. The only way you get good views is if you get a lot of views at once to start a snowball effect that'll eventually get the algorithm to push the video out to more and more people. He says "if a video doesn't perform well in 24 hours doesn't mean its dead" and while this is technically true, 80% of the time its not. You need lots of views, fast, to get the algorithm to decide its worth recommending to people, even your own subscribers.
    By making it so the recommendation algorithm only initialises when a user signs on to UA-cam you're making it so it is prioritising content that is getting views or being actively uploaded in that exact moment that they're online. By doing this, the algorithm is ignoring content that was uploaded at a time the user was not signed on or active, and they're missing content they should otherwise be getting recommended.
    Not all your subscribers are going to be online at the same time. For example, if your audience is almost evenly split between the west coast and the east coast, you will not be performing as well as someone whose entire viewership base lives in the same time zone. Only half your viewers will be getting the notification of your content at any one time, and that's drastically affecting performance.

    I'm convinced after having viewed my own analytics for an extended period, and even conducting tests of some theories, that the primary focus of UA-cam's "algorithm" is to maximize revenue for UA-cam. Now, that makes complete sense. They're a publicly held company. But I think it's disingenuous to talk about "myths" and "best practices" when the ultimate determiner of a video or channel's fate is based on "how much revenue does it generate?" Those things may be important - but they are downstream from the primary driver. Revenue.
    With so many users viewing at any given second, YT can monitor performance in real time, or near real time. When something trends AND it can garner higher ad revenue - then of course they're going to push it. They make more money that way. The same applies to channels or topics that historically do better. As a creator, I'm glad they share a bit with me. (I get about $65-$75 per month.) Make no mistake, it's what runs the world. Money.
    Stop pretending to be these hip, altruistic guides to maximizing UA-cam and admit that in the final analysis, it is UA-cam who picks the winners and losers based on what will be the most profitable course of action for the corporation.
    That's how it MUST work. Every other company admits it - they're in it primarily for the revenue. All else is subservient to that.

    It's hard to be a UA-camr nowadays. Back then, you could create a loyal audience who is intersted in your content, and actually watches the videos. Nowadays, you can get subscribers, but if UA-cam isn't recommending your videos to them, they don't even have the chance to become loyal viewers. I am having over 500,000 subscribers, growing around 10k each month. But I am really struggling to get my videos out to my viewers. Made a survey in my community tab, asking my viewers directly why they aren't watching. And over 50% voted that they simply getting any of my videos recommended anymore, thinking I stopped. It's cruel.

    There is a big problem with the logic in the last section of the video! If you make shorts and get a lot of subscribers, and then make a long form video, your video will under perform when shown to subscribers.
    So, basically, youtube will kill a long video simply because people from shorts are not going to watch it.

Subscriber total is like all the money you’ve ever had in the bank - it’s a cool number, but not as important as your current balance. Which, in this case would be regular viewers. I encourage you to check out the audience, tab and analytics and see what your regular viewers are most loving on your channel, give them more of that to love, and see how they react

      All the money I've ever had in the bank is a number that can never go down. Subscriber number can go down because people can and do unsubscribe. Sub feeds are just a less-convenient way to search. Most people don't even think about using it. I rarely do. They probably assume that when they use the primary search feature that UA-cam factors in who they have subscribed to on the subject. Is that wrong?
      The algos have already torpedoed "regular viewers" for me because a "anti-this guy" video went viral to his fans. That brought views but they were "hate views". Algo totally misunderstood who to send my stuff to. It got so bad that I made the vid private. The top vid on my channel by far, and I took it down because it was causing the algo to only show my stuff to the wrong people. People who would hate what I was saying. Now your algo is probably docking me for having a hated channel, when the algo itself called the channel to the attention of those who would hate it rather than those who would like it.

  • @AndyGilleand
    @AndyGilleand 11 місяців тому +3

    The idea that the algorithm looks at individual videos rather than the channel itself sounds nice in theory, but the problem is the way the individual video looks to the algorithm will be affected by your channel audience regardless. If you start making videos that your audience doesnt like, then that audience won't watch those videos when they get published, or even worse, may give thumbs down to them or unsubscribe. While the algorithm is not looking at the channel as a whole, they will see what has happened to that specific video as an indication that the video jtself is bad. Low views, dislikes, and losing subscribers will look bad from an "individual video" perspective, despite being driven by the overall channel audience in the first place. Since your subscribers are the first people to see the video in their feed, how they react to it has a dramatic impact on how the algorithm will see the video later on.

  • @reeseoliveira
    @reeseoliveira 11 місяців тому +4

    I have an honest question from a musician/singer. It’s explained that videos are “pulled” instead of “pushed.” I feel like that would work for many verticals (someone searching for a how-to video. Or, someone searching for cross-over content from another video or platform and wants to see more from a particular creator.) If this is true 100% of the time, then new creators and artists don’t stand a chance for being discovered. For example, a new musician or band releasing an original song…no one knows to look for that song/video (thereby “pulling it”) unless the person is 1) a previous fan or 2) heard the song on a different platform (the radio) and came to search for it.
    It seems like there needs to be a curator of new content. Just like a museum curator that picks what is on display for that month. A curator would help showcase those creators with really well-produced content (but no one is searching for it because they don’t know of its existence…)
    Spotify has a “release radar” that seems to give musicians a fair shot in getting ears on new music. I wish UA-cam had something similar…but it’s curated by a human and not AI.

Eliminated this video so for a year now it got almost no views. only 100 or so. This destroyed my motivation to create more videos. They don't really want new creators. Its a corrupt system, supporting the big channels and holding down new channels that even not monetized, so there is no pay out. This is what i believe. I could going on with other examples that did happen. Retention from 73% down straight to 50% in a single day. Before 180 views per day, no 45-50 views per day. Those are typically characteristics of a video that appeals to your regular, dedicated viewers, but doesn’t appeal to the broader mainstream audience. As videos grow, typically all those stats, go down, they don’t stay high, because the matches aren’t as good, there’s just way more of them. UA-cam is a big manipulation and to get monetized means they would have to share the income from adds with a new creator, and this must be prevented. Same with my subscribers, I guess they delete them time by time.
      When manipulation is going on and you cant explain it different you see what you are worth for them. Create new videos 3 times a week, we UA-cam can run our add on, and wont invite you to participate! Its a cool business model for them, with millions on the way to be monetized.

    suggestions based on viewer watch history? but watch history is based on what is recommended to the viewer to watch? (like homepage recommending trending content rather than subscription based content and "search" only recommending 3-4 creators and a list of "other people watched" and other off topic suggestions rather than relative results). Its frustrating to have a channel with 120000 subscribers and see only 21k "impressions" with 900 views meanwhile uploading the same, or similar video to a second smaller "test" channel with 178 subscribers gets 25k impressions and nearly the same view count. The larger channel had a better CTR and longer watch time than the smaller channel but the smaller channel still had the video recommended to more viewers. I feel like going "viral" can destroy smaller channels. After the initial influx of subscribers subsides you are stuck with an audience who will only be served one type of video regardless of what your channel library consists of and wont recommend your future videos to your subscribers unless it matches the "mystery viral content" the yt algo thinks they are willing to watch.

    this makes no sense to me at 0:40 you say "focus more on each individual video" and later that off topic videos dont hurt your channel
    then towards the end at 9:25 you say "how did the viewers who saw impressions from the subscription feed react"
    that literally acknowledges current subs interest effect video performance. if ur subs arent into "x" and you make a video about "x" that videos performance will suffer because of it correct? so then how would you focus more on each individual video and how would we create more off topic videos that dont hurt our channel. its kind of contradictory and would love an explanation especially since what is being said here vs the reason why other big youtubers are "quiting" doesnt add up. for example CaptainSparklez chooses to post on a totally different channel for other video "topics" rather than to post on his main channel. its safe to say that most of his audience from both channels are probably the same subs.

    Alot of times when I see these UA-cam videos from UA-cam staff trying to explain the algorithm, I laugh 😃 😀 Why? Well because everything he just said is the total opposite of what the algorithm does when I upload a video. The total opposite. At times I think UA-cam staff gaslight us (the creators). Any creator that's reading this, try going 7-10 days without uploading and see what happens to your views, impressions and channel. The algorithm DOES punish creators if we don't post consistently. Within 48 hours, if your video doesn't take off, the algorithm kicks it to the side. My data proves it. So does my analytics. It's rare, older videos get traction. Once in a while, one make take off on it's own. But it's not a common thing, guys. These UA-cam explanation by staff, is the opposite of what happens when a creator uploads a video.

    You claim to primarily look at the video to determine whether to show a video, but this contradicts the advice that YT gives saying 'same audience same channel, different audience different channel' which suggests that channel characteristics do play a role in the recommendation engine. How do channel characteristics play a role in the recommendation engine? What properties of the channel are considered? Or is it as simple as your subscribers don't like it so we don't recommend it? If it depends on the subscriber response, how can an atypical video explode as, presumably, the subscribers didn't sign up for it and thus are more likely to ignore that atypical video?

    • @YouTubeLiaison
      @YouTubeLiaison 11 місяців тому +4

      It basically depends on your goals. Same audience, same channel as if you want to maximize growth and make it as easy as possible. Consistently producing content for the same audience just grow that audience. If you care more about art or variety, the algorithm will still look for an audience, but it may be starting from zero every time.

      @@UA-camLiaison Thanks for your reply! Doesn't this contradict the claim that every video is judged based on its own merit? As far as I can judge, and which you confirm with this answer, performance depends on video properties and channel properties. Hence my question how do channel characteristics play a role in the recommendation engine? The reverse seems a worthwhile question too, how do videos impact the relevant channel characteristics? I mean at 1:46 you start a conversation about a bad video impacting performance of future videos and it is pretty much denied, but those channel characteristics that are taken into consideration come from somewhere. I would say they come from the videos posted and audience reaction to it, at least that is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with, YT may occasionally tweak channel standing manually, I can't believe that is done routinely.

    • @YouTubeLiaison
      @YouTubeLiaison 11 місяців тому +4

      I think it might be helpful to look at channels more like shows. Brian Cranston can be in Malcolm in the middle, Godzilla, and breaking bad, but if those were all the same show, it might confuse the audience, lower views, and make growth harder, because no one would know from episode to episode, or even moment to moment what they were going to get. If you make a hockey channel, and every video is about hockey, it’s a very easy decision for a viewer to watch them. If you start alternating videos about Appalachian folk pottery, there might be some people who enjoy both, but it will also complicate the decision for people who don’t. UA-cam will try to serve the right video to the right viewer at the right time, but you’re splitting focus, splitting audience, and so growth might be slower. This isn’t unique to UA-cam, it’s part of every form of entertainment. If you’re interested in the fastest growth possible, it’s best to have the same content for the same audience on the same channel. But you can choose to do a variety if you want to. The decision is entirely up to you!

    • @silentwilly2983

      @@UA-camLiaison Of course, but this doesn't explain anything. It is claimed videos are promoted based on their own merit, that implies without the context of the channel and all videos start out with a clean slate so to say. That is not the case the channel properties play a role, you also implicate this in your answers. Obviously nothing intrinsically wrong with that, in contrary, but it raises the question how the channel informs the recommendation engine. An obvious one is that if somebody watched a video of the channel before there is a better chance to be recommended another video of the channel. Another one is that the video performance with subscribers informs the recommendation engine about the 'quality' of the video. However, in this video it is suggested this is a mere correlation, not causation, I'm not sure what to think of that. I also often get the impression there is something of a generic 'channel standing' that goes into the recommendation engine, not sure how true that is though. For me it is now a guessing game, hence my question in the original post: "What properties of the channel are considered?" and more extensively in my reply: "Hence my question how do channel characteristics play a role in the recommendation engine? The reverse seems a worthwhile question too, how do videos impact the relevant channel characteristics?"

    @tenchfroast 11 місяців тому +2

    The only thing kind of silly about this interview is how hard UA-cam always tries to act like they don't have any control over the success of your content lol
    As soon as you created a system that decides what to show people, where, when, and how often, you became an influence on video performance. It's not all up to "the audience". It's up to the way you program the system to interpret and respond to signals from the audience.
    That includes assumptions about what content/viewers are similar or related, which often leads to these loops of being recommended the same handful of channels repeatedly. And many big creators take advantage of that, intentionally scheduling videos around their mates to make sure they publish them all at once or back to back to keep recommendations bouncing between them. So even if you only watch one of them, you still get recommended the rest.
    Popularity matters too, not just quality or relevance, because a video's performance is affected by your competition. You skirted around that a bit. Maybe your video is great and getting a ton of views. If someone else covers the same topic, your video can tank. Not because it's suddenly bad but because all of the attention is now going elsewhere. What staff won't admit is that it doesn't always go elsewhere because another person did it better. Sometimes they're just bigger than you.
    It's weird how many folks I hear from who never have my videos recommended or autoplay in "up next" no matter how many they watch because UA-cam keeps trying to send them to bigger channels instead. The argument is that they're similar or that people who watch me also watch them. You know who else is similar to me? Me. How about sticking to my content when someone is on my channel watching my videos? lol
    And with subscriptions, UA-cam took the power of the audience away. For many creators, subs don't even see when they post new content because UA-cam decided to place suggestions based on behavior above what the person literally asked you to show them.
    Imagine anything else working that way. You subscribe to a weekly meal service because you enjoy their food, but if you don't eat a couple of the meals you get, they stop sending you any despite still being subscribed. You made subscriptions irrelevant to anything other than gatekeeping features.
    I'm not upset about any of this. It's just funny hearing staff repeat the same talking points. Your goal is for the platform to be successful by keeping people on it. So you prioritize what people come back to, even if it's the same video they've already seen 10x, instead of pushing the discovery of new things. Sometimes creators benefit from that and sometimes we don't. 🤷🏾‍♀

    What really amazes me is when I search for a topic matter on UA-cam the list of query replies is very short, then as I scroll down the suggested videos are repeated. But why in the search results are there so many videos that have ZERO to do with the query I made. To me it just feels like the system is 1, only ever going to let me see a tiny selection of the possibly result queries and 2, UA-cam is far more interested on me getting distracted on clickbait rubbish content from the same circle of select producers. Honestly it's so frustrating and very disappointing on so many levels. I seem to have land on my homepage channels I do not want to watch, no matter how many times I tell the system I'm not interested, the channels is back and being suggested again, WHY?. Says to me the action buttons to react to controlling content have absolutely nil effect. Same with trying to numb Shorts in the feed, lots of viewers don't want that amazing content in their face, yet it's impossible to remove.

      Great comment! I think this all the time! And say it occasionally (for fear of getting my channel punished by the UA-cam controllers). The whole UA-cam system is so out of whack and contrary to what people want and expect, it frustrates me so much. I have loved UA-cam for so long, and just hate what they're doing to it. It's not enjoyable anymore. Many of my long time friends and supporters evidently aren't enjoying it anymore because I see less and less of them nowadays. Many have quit or moved on to Facebook, IG, and the dreaded TikTok. It seems all the other sites offer more than UA-cam does in terms of ease of use and general satisfaction. It seems the only advantage UA-cam has anymore is the largest built-in audience. Google dominates the whole web, basically, so it should be hard for UA-cam not to be the biggest. But something they will never admit, is that with all that clout and advantage, they should be much bigger than they are.
      I don't have fun on here anymore. Every time I use this site, something about it frustrates me. Or makes me ask, "Why are they doing it this way"? Or "Why can't I do this"? Or "Why don't they do this"?
      I never feel that way on any other site.

I am quite critical here on these Insider videos, and it seems like the more critical I am, the lower my video and overall channel performance drops. Videos that have performed very well for over a decade. New videos in which I have done nothing differently with for many years, instead of getting four or so of my OWN similar related videos coming up in the "recommended", suddenly now getting NONE of my own videos recommended. None of it makes sense anymore. Too many other odd things going on surrounding my channel for me _not_ to think UA-cam is purposely not recommending/holding back/shadow banning my channel and videos. This is what makes me think UA-cam plays favorites, and punishes people whom they don't like. I just got this reply to one of my comments I made on someone else's video, in my notification bell:
      " dear friend why can i not go to your channel ??? IT DOES NOT WORK...i want go and comment but you tube says it is not there ??"
      That is a direct copy & paste of the person's reply to me. Why do things like this keep happening? Why do I only see _some_ replies, but not all? Why do some of my long time subscribers tell me they thought I quit because they no longer receive notifications from me? (Yes, a few have literally said that, after I commented their videos).
      I used to love and defend UA-cam for the last decade and a half, but at this point, I loathe the company that is UA-cam. Not the concept, or the great videos and creators which have built it up, but the current group who run, direct, design, control, and are destroying UA-cam. It really is the poorest run website I've ever experienced. So many glitches and/or poor design flubs, yet instead of correcting those, they continue to make more "improvements", each one coming with some other unforseen consequence. The banking website I have used (my credit union) for the last 27 years has only had one major design update in all that time, and I have NEVER experienced a problem with the site. With UA-cam, I experience some glitch or problem several times a DAY. I could make a list several paragraphs long of the exact glitches I'm experiencing. I've mentioned several of them on these Insider videos. NEVER ONCE has an Insider replied to my question/problem either on the comment page or through my personal email.

If you have a good 10-minute video everyone would like and then then 10 minutes of content only 10 percent of people would like. Do you leave it or delete it. These are the questions I wonder about. I know I'm not the only one who thinks UA-cam has become a dysfunctional mess. I still use UA-cam very often, and today it just occurred to me what one of the big "algorithm" problems is. I think it tries too hard. It tries to "think" for the user. It tries to learn about the user. Users do not want this. Back when UA-cam was good, I could click on a video of something I wanted to watch (I'll just make something up -woodworking), and on the recommended list next to it, the first four videos would be other similar videos from the same creator I'm watching now, and below them would be various other WOODWORKING videos.
    Now, if I click on and watch a video, the recommended list will have maybe one or two similar videos, which may or may not be from the same creator I'm watching. The rest of the videos will be the "trending" junk UA-cam wants to promote, along with unrelated videos I'VE ALREADY WATCHED, and a bunch of videos related not to the video I'm watching NOW, but related to videos I watched YESTERDAY!
    UA-cam, keep it simplc and basic! A woodworking video should only have more videos from that creator and other woodworking videos next to it.
    I love UA-cam. But it's not enjoyable like it used to be.
    Edit: What I'm trying to say is that the "related" videos that come up should be related to the video being played, not the creator watching.

    Why doesn't UA-cam offer more comprehensive data and tools to creators, such as A/B testing for thumbnails or detailed subscriber source analytics? It appears that they are deliberately making it difficult for us creators.

    The question I have asked and never gotten an answer to is: my analytics includes a list of other channels my audience watches, BUT my videos are never recommended off of videos from those channels, or even off of videos similar to those, despite being in the same niche. If you know there’s an overlap there, why is it not being exploited? Instead, my videos are recommended off a very random and poorly matched bunch of content competely outside the niche. Why does it constantly look like UA-cam is trying to guess who might like the video, when there is data there to work with?

    I received 3.5K views for a particular 'short'. So I followed up with a similar 'short' and it got me 53 views. So impossible to believe.

      It's all about luck man. I've tested 2 exactly the same shorts, guess what? one gets pushed more and the 2nd gets pushed to different countries! Totally different outcome! UA-cam will never tell you the truth!

    Not truthful at all and can be easily proved.
