    So, why do all of my new videos gets demonetized when every single time after getting it reviewed, it's green. Why do I keep getting demonetized even though I'm following the guidelines and it gets approved every single time after a manual review?

      Simple. The AI is not perfect yet. They want you to help train it be asking for a human review. Look out for trigger words in your video and metadata, review and submit.

    Algo is broken... all of my recent uploads flagged as 'not suitable for most advertisers' within hours of upload, then remonetized after manual review. Need a new strategy YT...help us Tom...you're our only hope!

    • @30by40
      @30by40 6 років тому +3

      right? I think that if a video is flagged by the AI, it should be: 1) manually reviewed by YT automatically (don't require us to recognize and request a manual review) and then 2) make a monetization decision, not: demonetize then require us to request a manual review.

    Our videos get auto-generated English subtitles sometimes. We are speaking Japanese though, which has a lot of "shi" sounds. And sometimes "fu" sounds. So guess which swear words get auto-recognized, over and over?... Our video language is always set to Japanese. And when the exclude ads code was briefly visible, it seems as if multiple videos are marked as having profanity (even though there is none). I wish there were a more reliable solution.

    • @AveRicks
      @AveRicks 6 років тому

      You can edit your subtitles

    • @NihonJack
      @NihonJack 6 років тому +7

      I do -- I just delete them since they are just gibberish - but does the algorithm still use the results of its own voice recognition in deciding what kinds of advertisers would be suitable for the content? There is no guidance about how it all works. For example, if an English speaker was saying the F word 100 times but just edited the autogenerated subtitles, then this would be a way to cheat the system. It makes some sense that UA-cam would not ignore its own results. But if the autogenerated subtitles are the WRONG language, then this is a way the system cheats me. And I know that it gets it wrong (despite my videos being marked as Japanese in the language setting field) because the autogenerated subtitles are in English, not Japanese. (The autogen Japanese subtitles are terrible, BTW, even for native speakers, so at least I would be in the same boat as everyone else).

    What I'd love to know is why do all of my new videos gets marked as "not suitable for all ads" when every single time after getting it reviewed, it's green. Why do I keep getting hit even though I'm following the guidelines and it gets approved after a manual review? What does this algorithm search for that marks it yellow that I can try to avoid in the future?

    Thanks for another solid video Tom. I appreciate Todd coming on the channel. Hope your week is off to a great start.
    Side note: the video monetization approval process (for the moment) seems to be very quick as of this past week. Where I was having to wait 3-4 days (a few weeks ago) from the time I would turn a video live until it was given approval (or not) for ads by human review. Now that process seems to be within 24 hours and the latest video was within a couple of hours. Hopefully this trend continues.

    Can the "Creator Insider" channel revisit the video demonitisation problem that currently exists? We create 2 recipe videos a week - recipe videos, very safe videos about baking cakes, nothing risque, nothing political, nothing harmful... recipe videos. Yet every one is demonitised and we have to ask for a manual review. 2-3 days later the videos are always cleared for advertising. We've been told that the machine is learning and the process should get better, but it isn't. Our videos are demonitised right at the point when the most views happen. When will this be fixed?

    All my videos lately keep getting the “not suited for most advertisers “ message. I have asked for manual reviews on all of them and they have all been eventually given the green dollar sign icon! There definitely seems to be something wrong with your AI reviewers if after my request for human or manual reviews all my videos get the green light.

      There are big fraud by UA-cam because mostly channel are not able to crrose 1000 views in 7days so these channel are not eligible for review and not earn money until they aren't got green dollars . UA-cam take free publicity for billions videos.

    Thanks for making this video Tom. Since you want to see more questions about search and discover, my question is: What factors are being looked at in the first 10 minutes of a video going public? I ask because I've noticed that right around the 10 minute mark a video will either go up in traffic or stay flat. When views go up it typically means the video is being put in 'suggested videos' on other creator's videos. When the views stay flat, my video is only being placed in 'suggested videos' on my own videos. Can you provide some insight on what determines if a video will be put in other creator's suggested sections? Thank you!

      I think you already have a hunch. Mine is --> 1) do tons of your subs watch after they get the notifications? If yes, trial larger audience (notify more of your subs, start pushing outside of your channel/subs). 2) Does larger audience click and then watch? If yes, trial even larger audience. 3) Does even larger audience click and then watch? If yes, then video blows up. Probably not in such discrete steps, but I have literally seen huge stepups then stepdowns or setpups then blowups personally, in what appears to be very sudden larger audience trials and, based on the results, more or less views.
      By the way, I am subbed to your channel, found you because of PPAP - I live in Japan, people did not know about it here as fast as ppl in the US :-)

    8:55 my channel fits that example, i guess. Almost 1 million subs and the channel has been struggling to get 30.000 views on videos for a month now, after i posted one video that didn't go well. I keep asking youtube to specifically adress the issue with gaming channels, that would be great if you guys could do it. After observing a lot of channels focused on gaming, what i conclude (i may be wrong) is that youtube is sinking gaming content intentionally and not showing people that they do exist. They simply doesn't reach the audience - that subscribed for them - as it used to. The feeling i have as a creator is that a huge % of my audience got together in a room and said "hey, we are making a pact here where we don't watch this channel anymore, ok?" and all of them followed that pact. Since that's something very unlikely to happen, i am trying to dig to understand what's going on without success. Whatever i post doesn't reach my audience, i get lots of complaints on comments that youtube didn't show the video to someone, and they found out i keep uploading by remembering the channel one day and going like "i wonder if that guy is uploading, let me check his channel.. oh wait, he did, a lot, wow, whats happening?"
    Tried to contact UA-cam BR Support twice and got one interesting reply: "Google is one of the biggest companies on earth. Who do you think is wrong? Google's/UA-cam's Algorithm or you?" - that came from a UA-cam support member, who also told me to go learn marketing with my network. That reply made me not go for the support anymore.
    That's why i kinda keep going and been bugging this channel in order to maybe get some answers on what's going on and why has the gaming reach content is being reduced so much in the last months.
    I also understand that it's pretty hard to control gaming channels, and there's a lot of different stuff out there and i might understand why UA-cam would to slowly kill gaming content out of the platform, specially considering this year's huge polemic cases involving youtube's biggest channel - wich happened to be a gaming one.
    Could you guys talk about gaming channels and what's UA-cam's take on this issue? When are we going to receive some love?

    • @Hagazo
      @Hagazo 6 років тому

      BTW i have been noticing this weird problem with newly uploaded videos, however, the old videos seems to have been performing well for a longer period of time, maybe that's why youtube support br said nothing was wrong, by looking at analytics data as a whole is harder to notice this issue with newer videos. Also, i notice HUGE drops in views in the same gaming series of videos, like video 15 has 100.000 views and video 16 has 20.000. Again, it's like the audience gathered and decided not to watch, but since that didn't happen, i want to know what is going on with the platform that gets such randomic results.
      Thanks again, Tom, great job on this channel

    • @Hagazo
      @Hagazo 6 років тому

      Also, could you guys talk about uploading schedule? Noticed that channels that uploads one video/day or 2~3 videos/week tend to go better in views than those who uploads 2~3 times/day. What's the optimum upload schedule for UA-cam?

    • @DaminousPurityofficial
      @DaminousPurityofficial 6 років тому

      Exactly, it seems our channels are all being forced into restricted mode and UA-cam refuses to acknowledge us in any way but yet contInues to promote false and misleading clickbait and all their favourites regardless of what the content is even violent content from their favourites is still unrestricted and even on the trending page. You look at a company like WWE for instant and look at their UA-cam channel in restricted mode and their videos are missing, us gaming creators regardless of even if it is "wrestling" games are being removed because UA-cam's stupid and only seems to care about those they've funded and are getting paid to promote.
      UA-cam's advice to me was "it's a wrestling game so use wrestling as a tag word" well you use it and your entire channel is placed in restricted yet violence and even the call of duty channels are all free and monetized yet that is extreme violence?? UA-cam then spits out that "you must be 13 to have a youtube account" as an excuse which again is just an excuse since I'm more than 13. The fact stands that they refuse to do what is needed and just keep masking copy/paste excuses.

  • @nerdcity
    @nerdcity 6 років тому +12

    What’s concerning about search and discovery and monetization status being truly disconnected is that creators can only appeal the ad friendliness. If the content scanner misinterpreted the video as profane, there’s no manual review process for that. It’ll just always be seen that way by the search and discovery algorithms and punished by getting shown to less people. Is that right?

      Maybe they should try making their AI filter more lenient and maybe add something where viewers can rate the level of profanity for videos? The AI seems to mess up a lot and of course there are too many videos for the people at UA-cam to watch every single one, so why not get a little help from the viewers?

    • @Yorekok
      @Yorekok 6 років тому +1

      Scary thing is : If you get couple of videos demonetized in a row, there will always be a chain reaction that the system will automatically realize-misinterpret your channel as "dangerous" and your videos will perform bad EVEN after they got reviewed and monetized. So your punishment theory is pretty spot on.

      This won't make sense but I've only ever seen evidence suggesting otherwise, especially in the case of getting a copyright strike. Most notably, if the amount of views "lost" outweigh the amount gained within the past 28 days, the channel tends to have a harder time getting new videos back into Suggested.

    I have went from 50k view videos down to 10k, then 5k then 3 -2k and now its hard to even get 1k views. It started happening when videos started to get demonetized. So I think the videos that got demonetized performed bad and the upcoming videos also got demonetized and cause a chain reaction where it killed the channel. Please fix this issue, I really love this platform.

    I like the idea of this channel but it is disappointing that you've consistently failed to address what I perceive as the "most asked" query in the comments, that of why so many videos are invalidly flagged as ad-inappropriate (by which I mean they're unflagged after manual review). Also, no word on why it takes so long for those reviews to take place. On a related note, review of an entire channel for monetisation is taking longer than the suggested "one week" as well, and this is very frustrating.

    • @DougHewsonYT
      @DougHewsonYT 6 років тому +1

      CruisingTheCut in this case, the gentleman does not work with the advertiser AI, so likely cannot comment on those things. In regards to the monetisation review at 10000 views, I hear they are currently backlogged (assuming you got your review submitted).

    • @TensorProgramming
      @TensorProgramming 6 років тому

      That's completely wrong btw. This is not the first algorithm of its kind. Not to mention that this algorithm has one of the largest data-sets in the world and it has very specific rules and "guidelines" to follow. I've worked in ML for the past 10 years and if any Algorithm I built was preforming this badly for this long then I would be rebuilding it; but that doesn't seem to be the case with UA-cam.
      UA-cam is a scam and they aren't even trying to hide it at this point. The criminally low CPMs and the algorithm that demonetizes my Educational videos like clock work but allows other people to post stuff about a guy who hanged himself and then goes on to promote it like crazy. Fact is that I can go onto another platform (which will remain unnamed here) and make 5-6 times more money then I've ever made on UA-cam (1.5 years) in less then a week using the same content. There is something dreadfully wrong with that.

    Hi Tom, enjoyed the video. One thing that caught my ear was when Todd mentioned a channel being essentially shutdown after a video. I would love for Todd and his team to take a look at our channel. Once the algorithm was altered our channel has been consistently loosing subscribers and views. We went from an average of 300-600 subs a day and about 20,000-60,000 views a days to having negative subscribers since the end of Nov. with under 1,000 views a day. My kids have been hit hard, their content is nothing but kid-friendly. With myself being in the military, UA-cam is a huge way for them to stay in contact with friends and fans. It keeps their days full of excitement, especially when I deploy. Almost half of our videos can’t even be found when searched word for word. Please help!!
    Thank you for the videos.

    So, I have a question, hopefully you can answer. I have 116K subs, 241K average minutes of daily watch time, and my major uploads easily clearing 10K views a video. I feel like these are great numbers for my size, but I still don't feel like new viewers are being shown my channel. Are there percentages or specific numbers that we need to clear to be promoted? I thought that when I hit numbers like this, my channel would get more love from the algorithm, but no such luck. :(

      Your channel works around getting found, rather than getting recommended. You maybe want to look into Google Trends or similar things, so you can plan around what the most popular topics currently are regarding your vertical. Or in other words: If you make videos about a product, the video only can get as popular as the product. And if the product is irrelevant for all intents and purposes, it may not be worth making a video about it.

    Large real-world case for 2 months time off: a group of channels from a popular Japanese MCN took 2 months off for a (self-imposed?) punishment related to a scandal. The channels are back starting about 2 weeks ago. A bunch of their videos are getting 1M plus views. Not back to pre-hiatus counts now, but somewhat recovered (there are real world reasons why people may not chose to watch after the controversy). Search "hikaru" on SB if you want to see the dip in views/new subs during the hiatus, now back to 50M views/mo.

    About 90% of my videos get flagged with this.
    i request a manual review..... and it eventually get fixed.
    But still the algorithm that flags my videos has pretty much a 100% fail.
    All the videos it flags get overturned in a manual review. But still I need to constantly ask for a manual review.
    Any words on that??? a possible fix for that in the future???

      +Multiverse I've had luck in uploading a video 5+ days ahead of time and scheduling them, keeping an eye out for demonization flags, and immediately appealing for manual review once I've noticed them. The appeals process has usually been 2-3 days. The weird thing's when you've had a video uploaded for a couple of days and then the A.I. decides to flag it for demonetization!

    When does the 24-48 hour (week) clock for a video test and then suggested starts when you make a video unlisted or only when it goes public? A lot of creators make the video available to their Patreon supporters a few days early. Does this hurt the videos’ performance if it is unlisted for several days? Sharing a private video does not work well.

    Tom- the audio and setup is great. Easily the best quality. The background was a little sparse overall since it's just a gradient- but the actual production quality and format is really getting better with each upload.
    As I mentioned before- I think this channel is great because you are seeing first hand what goes into to "making the sausage"
    The staging the lights the framing.
    And this is why "live mobile" is so much harder. It takes time and effort to put together a scene that looks and sounds good.

Also, do we have to enter tags together AND broken up or is that redundant or detrimental? For example "card game" "card" "game" as 3 tags.

    Interesting information here, thanks. Is subscription level a large important data point for a channel or does total channel views have a part? Maybe it's simply a quality video topic that hasn't been handled by someone else? My subscriber level is around 1.8k, but total views are over 1.4 million now (would be more but I've deleted some videos in the past that produced a high traffic yet negative response such as talking about a camera I didn't have on-hand). The decent amount of total views could partly be the channel's age (January 2011), but maybe it's the type of videos I've produced. Some videos hit decent numbers, while others get a handful of views and then maybe a few here and there afterward (eg. month old video with 23 views that I thought was a decent unique video). I feel like I've drastically improved my quality level since August 2017, but the views for the videos seem weak. There are a few recent ones that have hit 4-5 digits. One video I specifically expected it would happen because no one had made a video on the subject yet (it was linked externally from a high traffic site). I guess I'm answering my own question in a way, but some videos I really enjoyed making and thought were unique or interesting end up basically dead from the start. Not seeing much light at the end of the tunnel so far. I wish I could replace audio in old videos (to apply noise reduction) as well as affix 20 seconds of video/music so I could add ending screens to my older content. I just recently started adding those 20 seconds of fluff to the end of my videos for end screens.

    Question: If I change the website URL at the top of my video description, am I at any risk to lose the ranking of my video? I've had friends who had a video take off and then they changed the description or title and their video viewership almost died out entirely.
    I ask I have thousands of old/broken links that point to my old website. I just migrated my old website to my new website via 301 permanent redirects and I'd love to change the old URLs to reflect the new URLs, but I'm terrified I might lose my individual video rankings by editing the first line of my video's description.
    Thank you! Great video by the way! Please continue doing these- they're super helpful!

    Does UA-cam’s algorithm promote daily uploaders more? And if you censor any profanity with a sound effect will UA-cam think the censor sound is just as bad as if it detected any profanity or am I just too skeptical about that. I don’t really curse at all, but I feel like that’s the main reason a lot of videos get demonitized

    Thank you guys for making this sitdown happen again. However, alot of what Tom said does not match up to my own personal experience. For example, the idea that the success of a video is audience driven. A recent video of mine managed to make it to 200 likes and 0 dislikes within the first 4 hours of it being uploaded. I think its fair to assume that this is a video that most of my subscribers would want to see. However after the initial upload views/likes the video took a huge dive and is now one the worst performing videos on my channel in recent times. 200 likes in 4 hours to 56 likes in subsequent days. I understand that likes aren't the only metric being used to measure my audience's interests but I can point to other examples of similar videos performing 250% better. The video in question is here: ua-cam.com/video/8itBnJcZEPY/v-deo.html
    I also have multiple examples where one video performs extremely poorly (75% drop in expected views), and then immediately subsequent videos follow suit. These are from series on my channel that i know my fanbase enjoys, with no increase in negative comments or dislikes to imply that something about the individual video made them disinterested.
    Sigh. I understand for the good of us all, the algorithm must remain a secret. But if we are dishonest about what the algorithm does we greatly impede our ability to improve it.

    • @speedybird
      @speedybird 6 років тому +1

      I think they don't know how to fix the algorithm anymore. I'm absolutely convinced its taken a level of AI on and youtube cannot control it in the way they used to, with a tweak here and there. I noticed a dramatic change in October of last year and they haven't been able to control it since.

    • @mattwo7
      @mattwo7 6 років тому +2

      The problem is that the algorithm is working as intended, which is good for viewers, bad for content creators. There's simply too many people uploading too many videos on the site for them to do anything about it.

      I can answer this question doulie...Likes are actually not that important, watch time is...A video with 50% dislikes, BUT people watch 90% of the video, will always perform better than a video with 99% likes but the watch time is only 50% of the video...Trust me, 'watch time' is god...likes and dislikes are like 4th down the list of importance

    • @ViralKiller
      @ViralKiller 6 років тому

    Well our channel has been up for a year now and we are producing good content but YT Algo do not help us much in recommending our videos therefore we are not getting any boost in views either. Sometimes it is already disappointing and we are sometimes feeling frustrated that our channel is getting no where and thinking of giving up. We have done everything we've learned about thumbnails, call to action, and all other great stuffs from the youtube creator academy tips but still nothing had change that much. We know the competition is really hard for our type of channel but we do hope that there could still be a change in how the algo works to give spark to those struggling channels like ours.

    Here's a question, that I've had for months now: How do I beat the UA-cam Spell Checker?
    In my case, ranking by the algorithm is not an issue. Instead, my issue is that the Search Bar recommends my channel name "Sevenblade" as a top result, meaning my channel is ranked positively. However, when I actually click on Search, the search result page shows results for "Seven Blade". None of my videos are shown, because searching for "Sevenblade" auto redirects to an auto-corrected spell check result "Seven Blade", which is not what I searched for.
    I have to click "Showing results for Seven Blade. Search instead for Sevenblade?" to actually find my videos... As far as I know, this issue has been on UA-cam since at least 2014. Mostly with original channel names that get auto corrected to "proper spelling"... Even channels with 50K subs experience this "Auto spell check correction", no matter whether the channel is 2 years old or even 5 years old.
    I think it's time to fix this issue, and show the spell checker how to "learn"...

    When the Yellow Icon comes up. The video is "shadow banned", this is the truth, don't listen to this nonsense, what this guy is saying is complete nonsense. Im a moderator for 5 channels and I have witnessed this many times. Ive seen videos getting 10k views an hour and as soon as the Yellow Icon shows up it would instantly decrease it to almost zero views per hour. as if it hits a wall. The worst part is by the time (could be weeks) the yellow turns to green, the video has lost momentum and never recovers, even after it has been pulled out of the shadows. Ive seen videos be #1 on google search, but on UA-cam are completely hidden. UA-cam has to get it together, and stop lying to the creators. Advertisers are not as sensitive as the UA-cam bots, Advertisers pay top dollar for Controversial Edgy material. Just look at Television, the edgier the better adverts, Nobody will advertise on "little house on the prairie" when they could advertise on "fifty shades of grey". Advertisers dont care that much- the bots are way too sensitive and need a shrink, some xanax, or just reprogramming.

    Ok here’s a question. For channels like mine and many others, I was able to hop onto a trend or two and gain many subscribers but when I would post normal videos it would drastically get less views. Now I’m barely able to get 1% of the audience to view my vids. How can I get more of my subscribers that subbed in the past notified about my channel and my recent videos. I feel like they forgot about the channel or never get suggested recent videos. What’s the best approach to “reviving” a channel? How does the algorithm view and deal with this?
