Alright y'all. It's another long one. We've been so lucky to have amazing Nightwish Army Community members who support many a Nightwish reaction on the channel. This was sent to us by Trinx who is in charge of the NightDreamers' Reacticide Discord Server ( / discord , so if you'd like to show your support for that communtiy and you LOVE nightwish, stop by and say hi! Also, join our Discord server (linked above).
Tuomas Holopainen wrote an incredibly virtuosic piece in The Greatest Show on Earth. There's no possible way to watch it once and gather all of the amazing poetry and imagery in line with what's happening on stage musically; but I think that's to be suspected from many reaction channels including this one! Feel free to correct us about facts and interpretations of the The Greatest Show On Earth or any of the amazing Floor Jansen moments that happen here. It was really a pleasure to reflect on the verse that Marko Hietala wrote compared to the recent new of his departing the band. The message in this composition is amazingly massive and impactful, so I hope you can share your feelings about it in the comments!

This is true of at least half of heavy metal or progressive bands.
Take Rush for example. No one would dare to put a rank in the importance of Geddy Lee, Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson to the band.
It's not like pop bands where people only know the singer.

But that phenomenon is not new. Giachino Rossini retired after Guillaume Tell at the age of 37 because he fed fed up with the music industry 200 years ago. From that on, he only composed in private for his dear friends and lived for his other passion: cooking.

It's a pity that so many people would listen to this and think it's pretty, pretty melodies, pretty singing, without fully understanding the depth of detail that goes in to a song like this. When music is demanding to listen to and offers depth that most people - including me - don't get until it's pointed out by people like Charlie, and Chase, and Julia, and Tank, that's when you're dealing with art for the ages. I wonder how in 2, 3, 400 years people will see Nightwish's legacy.

I saw that Tank mentions that. I think every artist has the duty to do that. Reminds me of how much time is spent at the end of an opera giving homage to the entire crew, costume/set designers, and everyone who made a performance possible. From a performer's perspective, that is customary. To me it would stand out if someone DIDN'T thank the entire team after a concert. That would be in bad taste.

    Charlie. . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Fantastic, just fantastic, what a brilliant job you have done, words fail.
A couple of things, Kai holding it all together and the band in top form at the end of a gruelling concert. Lest we forget, the accurate, poetic and metaphoric lyrics are written by Tuomas, and Marko for that matter, in their second language, it's worth a moments thought.
Charlie, you move in classical circles and I trust you have opened some eyes that quite a few "rock" musicians are not long haired morons just making an awful din.
We were here, we have always here in the matter from the universe and condensing gas that made this planet, everyone and everything was here and still is; everyone and everything to come is here now, but unassembled. Only a little bit of Eugene Shoemaker isn't here.

Kate Bush has composed IMHO the most difficult songs ever. Nightwish is at the same level. Pink Floyd has had IMHO the most influence ever on other music ever. Nightwish is at the same level. R.E.M. had made IMHO the most deep-going tributes to people like Andy Kaufman (Man on the Moon) or Dan Rather (What's the Frequency, Kenneth?) Nightwish is at the same level. Who am I? "The mother of all" could refer to the idea of mitochondrial Eve. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed down the female line and works back to a single female ancestor for us all. Or something like that. Probably.

    • @cainyourkids
      @cainyourkids 3 роки тому +2

It definitely could, as it is referenced again in the eponymous song 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful': "laying on a field of green, with mother Eve"
Tuomas always had a touch of science and biology in his writing, even if it was subtle in his older works compared to the recent ones. 'Stargazers' from Oceanborn is practically the fetal stage of EFMB ('a grand oasis in the vastness of gloom/child of dew-spangled cobweb/Mother to the moon') lol

I hope you'll also spend some time alone listening to this piece of art as a whole. Just to appreciate the way everything evolves and fits and how the emotions very subtly climb, culminating in "we were here" as well as the band being fysically and mentally drained after all they gave. After that nothing better than the warm bath of sharing the applause with the audience. Have fun also as a music lover, not just as the reactor!

'Had a dream to understand a single grain of sand' is referring to William Blake's:
To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
    And eternity in an hour.

  • @jigstraw2809
    @jigstraw2809 3 роки тому +6

I take the "had a dream to understand a single grain of sand" line to reference mankind's innate hunger to study and understand the world around us and how things work, and if you think about it in terms of physics, we STILL don't fully understand a grain of sand. you can say a grain of sand is an eroded piece of sandstone, but the sandstone is made up of molecules which are made up of different elements aka atoms which are made up of particles which are made up of quarks and i can only imagine it'll go even deeper than that in the future when we make more technological advancements enabling us study even smaller units of matter.

I thought of the same thing. To create perfectly realistic models of things with all the quantum phenomena involved, one must solve Schrödinger's equation - which we can barely do for something like a hydrogen molecule. Trying to do the same for a grain of sand, the equation becomes impossibly complex. That's how quickly we reach the limit in trying to achieve perfect understanding.

There's also a rap song at the end and an electronic bit somewhere. All packed into a few moments to show the evolution of music in human history.

So I guess I want to thank you for *teaching the teacher.* It was so nice to be a student for a change. I teach college English, and I have to teach students how to read poetry and then teach the poems themselves. It was nice to let myself be taught.

Excellent, very much appreciated your in depth analysis and shared wonder of just what a perfect offering Tuomas accomplished with this piece,. The entire new album, "Human :ii: Nature" is a continuation of what this song has introduced.. Touching on all the phases of life, the music, quirks, frailties, tragedies, and wonders of our short journey around the sun. Further cementing the genius that this man brings to us. Should be listened to in order as there is a theme it adheres to. A side note, there is a companion, one minute 'Countdown" introduction YT video for each song, (except "Noise") with each member of the band taking a turn setting up the next song in the list. A simple YT search for "NIghtwish Countdown" will bring those up. NIce added touch! Thanks again, enjoy your Nightwish Journey.

A few things i said during the premiere that i wanted to share. Right at the end of the "bach" part, the sound is very reminiscent of a missile hitting. "The grand finale", the atomic blast that wipes humanity and make room for "ratkind"
Also, the "had a dream to understant a single grain of sand", i couldn't find the origin of that idea, but i think i recall reading somewhere that if one were to be able to completely understand a grain of sand, one would be able to understand / imagine / extrapole the whole universe. We had a dream to understand the universe and our place in it.
Wonderfull work, a massive thank you for all the time and work you put into it, and for sharing it with us.

I have 2 other ideas of what that line could mean.
Could be similar to the idea of earth being a speck of dust (pale blue dot - Sagan) or if you think what sand is, Silicon. We understand sand so much that it has changed our technology and the world. and of course it nicely refers back to Dawkins quote.

Pyro was apparently done by a pyrotechnician who was wearing ear monitors. Supposedly Tuomas wanted to do the timing but it is pretty certain that no pyrotechnician is going to let anyone else do it. Let alone some timing device that someone might forget to turn off when things go wrong. It is the pyro guy who answers to the judge and pays with his job.
Then again. In some other country they might do things differently.

I think the "Had a dream to understand a single grain of sand" line is a reference to William Blake's "Auguries of Innocence", the first four lines of which can be viewed as a metaphor for scientific discovery:
To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
    And Eternity in an hour.

One thing I've not seen discussed is the line "Ion channels welcoming the outside world to the stuff of stars"
This is an absolutely brilliant line which draws heavily from Tuomas' background in, and continuing interest in the Sciences, particularly biology and astrophysics.
"The stuff of stars" refers to Us, to Humans, and more broadly, to all life. It is a reference to one of famed cosmologist Carl Sagan's most well-known quotes, that "We are made of star stuff", referencing the fact that atoms of heavier elements (like carbon) were birthed in the cradles of stars' inner cores (or during the star's explosive death), and spread throughout the universe by supernovae, thus making everything composed of any elements other than hydrogen and helium "star stuff".
Ion channels, meanwhile, are a feature of cellular biology which are present in all cells, but especially important for the function of the nervous system, as they underlie the formation and transmission of nervous impulses by allowing charged particles to flow selectively into and out of cells. So "welcoming the outside world" has a dual meaning: allowing ions into cells, but also being the conduit through which the nervous system transmits information--in this case from our sensory organs to our brains.
In this sense, the ion channels are "welcoming" the world, both physically as ions and symbolically as the way we take in information about the outside world, to Us, the "stuff of stars". It's a line that few lyricists could come up with due to the necessity of having a broad scientific knowledge base to draw from.
