i have 2 tips for heating up leftovers, maybe people already know them but anyways if you want to heat up leftover pasta, boil some water and throw the pasta in for just a few seconds before taking it out again. the pasta will be as if it were just cooked if you want to heat up rice, put a little bit of water on it before placing it in the microwave and it won't turn out dry
Tilda J. Even rice that has dried out can be brought back to life! I love my instant pot but it tends to dry out my rice if left inside. Put a few table spoons in the bottom of your bowl & stir your rice in so it's all wet. Cover loosely & microwave for about 2 minutes. If it's still a bit dry repeat. Works every time!
another way to use for example a squeezed lemon before throwing it away is to put it in the dishwasher :) it smells amazing and no need of any artificial scents :)
If you want to go a step further with your lemon, you just throw an entire lemon into the blender, skin and all. Cut into manageable pieces for your blender and just blend it up (add a drop of water if needed). Then the same as you did in the video, freeze in an ice cube tray. You can also do this with kiwis (skin and all). It's great to flavour your water or smoothies. Also, for the stock scraps, you can include herb stalks, apple cores and skins, wilted salad leaves (the ones on the outside that always look unappetising), carrot tops, radish and beetroot leaves, garlic skins.
I know right! 😊 And you end up getting much more out of each lemon. I used to squeeze half a lemon into my water before and by using this method, I get about 6 lemon cubes per lemon = 6 lemon waters 👍🏻
Ignore "sell by" and "best before" dates. "Use by" are a bit more important but still, foods don't carry a personal agenda with it and at the strike of midnight turn bad. Use common sense, if it looks or smells iffy dont use it, if it looks and smells fine prepare it properly and enjoy.
With dried out bread you can make croutons to top on salads and soups. Cut bread into cubes, fry with olive oil and spices (like whole cumin, rosemary) on low heat. Can also roast with seeds and nuts. Lately I have been using sunflower seeds with my homemade croutons- also good coupling with wilted salad to get crunch back!
Just a tip: broth tastes even better if you let it cook for 12-24 hours in a slow cooker! I let it cook for about 2 hours on high and then reduce to low for the rest of the time!
Phew. This video was all I needed to RUSH for the subscribe button. But I'm so happy with anybody that gives ANY hacks that lead to less food wastage. It's awesome. Good stuff!
I also do that! Yep it's a great tip! I also use ginger paste..so I just blend a nicely scrubbed root n voila...fresh ginger paste n I did not even peel it!
I use lemon juice when making homemade strawberry jam. I cut the lemon in half and squeeze out the juice required for the recipe. When I'm done with the lemon I place it in a bowl with a small amount of water. I then place it in the microwave for 5 minutes on high. I take a damp cloth and wipe the microwave clean. Works like a charm. Then dump the lemon in liquid into the garbage disposal and grind it up to clean and deodorize.
Whenever I am cooking cauliflower I cut the stems off and eat them as a snack while cooking and throughout the day. It is super crunchy. Since I am allergic to peppers I substitute cauliflower stems :D
What an amazing and informative video! I keep all my lemon peels, remove all the pith and put them in a mason jar with vinegar to make a eco-friendly cleaner. Sometimes I mix lemon and orange peels and add a few drops of essential oils too :)
I do the same thing it makes my kitchen smell so good and citrus-y. I use whatever citrus I brought this week. Grapefruit, orange, lemon, lime its all good
For freshening up your sink area take a used lemon or a slightly soft orange which you are going to throw away anyway , put it in your sink garbage disposal and blend it. Your kitchen will smell fresh and citrusy.
This was such a information packed video I loved every minute of it! Makes me happy knowing I enjoy eating my broccoli stems too. I’ve always loved the taste so I’ve never thrown them out 🌱💚
My mom just plants most scraps in the garden and doesn't even take any special care of it. We have a lot of trees, and even if they don't grow, these things help the soil so much.
@Fen Karma lol, one of my dogs politely declined blueberries and banana. He will keep his mouth shut and refuse to open it for blueberries. He will gently take the banana so it doesn't touch his mouth as much. Then turns the corner and sets it down and walks away.
My dog passed away earlier this year but he loved brocolli stems too, as well as lettuce, apples and cucumbers. He liked bananas and yoghurt as treats too!
Awesome! Such an important topic and great hacks. When I was a kid I actually didn't like the broccoli flowers and would only eat the stems. My brother was the opposite so it worked out well, but these days I love the whole thing! My favorite veggie!
I just posted a new video in honor of Earth Day with my favorite ways to reduce waste in the kitchen. I would love it if you would check it out! I'm a new UA-camr and could use some love!💖
My mom and I also don't like the tops and love the stems! We eat them anyway, but people always think its funny when I eat the top first to "save the best for last!"
Wow freezing the zest!! So many ideas to save food that never crossed my mind. Thank you so much I appreciate this upload thank you so much didn't know you could use the peels for infused waters, cleaning my plants etc♥️♥️♥️
As a baker I try to always buy my lemons, limes and oranges when they're on sale. I will zest and juice them for future recipes. The freezer doesn't harm the flavor at all.
Try blending the skins first. I put all my scraps in my blender then put it in a big black pot in my garden which is covered to compost. It all breaks down so much quicker.
I buy organic ginger and freeze the whole thing in the freezer skin and all. Then when I need ginger, I take a micro plain and grade it into my soups, etc. You can also freeze celery and put it into cooked dishes. I have a favorite place to hang herbs to let them dry too. Thanks for your video.....
My recent discovery: you can eat banana peel! I chop them up and put it in veggie burgers for a bit of sweetness but there’s also an recipe for chutney I found online. And one day I’ll get around to making vinegar but it seems a bit complicated for now.
citrus peels can also be made into all purpose cleaning products. Toss them in a jar and cover with white vinegar. I let the jar sit in my pantry for a month, shaking it once a week and then i strain the peels out and put the vinegar in a spray bottle and you have a great cleaner that smells super nice!
I love all of this. I grew up part of the clean plate club as a kid so everything had a purpose (my mama was a farm girl) and nothing went to waste. I cant wait to use some of these tips.
I still don't agree with making kids clean their plates if they aren't hungry anymore. If I have to eat when I am full, I feel sick so why would I do that to another person? I'm completely anti food waste but I want my kids to learn to stop eating when they are no longer hungry. Most overweight people have lost that "you are full, stop eating" feeling and forcing non hungry children to eat encourages that. I just eat their leftovers myself or plop their covered plates in the fridge with a notes saying whose it is and they can eat it later or the next day.
@@mchobbit2951 Growing up with having to eat everything that was on my plate, i can see the point where you are coming from. My parents approach wasnt to force me to eat everything in one go and not learn when im full, but to teach me to manage my portion size from an very young age on and rather eat one smaller portion and then ask for another when i still was hungry. To achieve that my parents had me finish the meal before i was allowed any other food. For example: when i didnt finish my lunch i wasnt allowed to eat cake/dessert later that day or something else for dinner than my lunch. Believe me I learned that lesson fast. I learned to manage my portion size so good in three years of living alone i only had to throw out my food 3 or 4 times. ( I hope all of that is understandable as English ist my first language.)
I buy my whole ginger organic. Then I don't skin my ginger. I freeze my ginger whole in the freezer. When I need to use it, I just use a food grater right into soup or what ever recipes.
I got myself jars from Target that look similar to the ones she has, hope this helps! www.target.com/p/glass-storage-canister-with-wood-lid-small-threshold-153/-/A-52349921?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&CPNG=PLA_Dining%2BShopping_Brand&adgroup=SC_Dining&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=m&location=9031621&gclsrc=aw.ds&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1247068&ds_rl=1246978&gclid=Cj0KCQjwvo_qBRDQARIsAE-bsH9ISdXZj5VlrKWjYsX0eiHmWcobcjhi-JvL5d9nktByLWOyj_TjkSIaAoCcEALw_wcB
Unfortunately that doesn't work for everyone. If I go shopping after a meal I never buy enough. I shop once a month and if I'm not hungry I buy enough for maybe a week and a half, then I have to shop again.
You can also freeze over ripe bananas and defrost them if you decide to make banana bread. In order to make my herbs , mostly cilantro and mint , last longer , i wash them and then take a large sheet of paper towel , it should be layered, place the herbs in between the layers of bounty and these herbs will last for a longer time.
Bruised apples make great applesauce! Same with pears, but I like to make pear cider first. They also work great in pies! Or peaches in cobbler. Personally I like bruised fruit, but I know a lot of people don’t buy if it’s bruised or toss it if it bruises at home. It’s perfectly good food!
Great ideas, thanks! Just a note for all people who want to use the citrus-peel ideas: buy organic if you plan to eat the peels .Regular fruits are covered with a ridicilous amount of wax.
Really love this video, packed with so many great tips. Really enjoyed the freezing and citrus tips. Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together.
Thank you very much for sharing! These are really inspiring and useful tips, some of them I already used (freezing tomato paste is such a practical thing!), and I'll definitely consider some other of them. Wish you happines and all the best for when the baby arrives! :)
Although I don't agree that we the consumer are the most abusers of the environment, manufacturers are the leaders of waste packaging that can't be recycled. Consumers are the hostages of the waste train. Some good ideas, I especially like freezing the lemon.
This video is sooo well executed! Your tips are seriously super helpful, thank you! 🥰 I also freeze overripe produce for smoothies and wilting veggies for stir frys or soups. I very very rarely ever throw out food anymore, and it feels great! Trying to be more mindful in all aspects of life 🙌 I wish the website would feature more plant-based lifestyle tips since animal agriculture is so destructive in every way, but at least they are promoting a less wasteful lifestyle! Baby steps 😊
I recently started using my citrus peels to make candies! Super easy and only takes about an hour or so. I have a small jar of candied lemon peels. They're great for garnishing or freshening up your mouth after a meal. Next I wanna try oranges and dip them in some chocolate. mmmm
It is also amazing that the people who grow produce don't use or sell all that's edible, you never see the whole stems of the broccoli in stores, so much of the plant never ends up to buy, parsley root, yam leaves, celery root, carrot green tops, red beet tops, grape leaves, onion greens, celery leaves, turnip and radish green, the list goes on and on!
Be carefull also if you store fruits like bananas with other fruits/veggies, they produce ethylene wich makes the fruits rippen faster or cause veggies to turn bad. That's why putting an avocato and a banana in a bag will make the avocado ripen faster :)
You did such a great job with this video Olga!every hack is practical and easy, I appreciated the lemon hack, never thought about that but is genius 😍 I was already applying the FIFO hack, it is key to not trow away food for me personally. I spied some silicone bags, are you thinking about producing them for fablunch?😍 I just discovered them too and got some online, they are life changing. I am definitely going to check savethefood for the proper way to store and freeze veggies, it is something I often think about. Oh and your pantry corner in the back is so nice! Goals 👌
I like the idea of monitoring what we uselly throw away it’s truth always the same I will cook those teams before anything else that way I don’t waste them
Actually, the banana peels are good for plants in another way. You can use them as a fertilizer. Just put the peels in a jar, fill it with water, close and let it be for about two days. Then water your plants with it. My mom uses this for years for her houseplants and she doesn't have to buy fertilizers at all.
Where did you get those gorgeous glass storage jars sitting behind you? They take up a lot of room, but they look great, see thru for monitoring and easy find, and they seem stackable to use vertical space.
So many wonderful tips and hacks. Thanks for this video. Could you please make a video on how to make food last longer. For example onions? Do you recommend a vacuum sealer? I would love to see a video on pickling unfinished foods.
Also animals are great for leftovers. My rabbit gets strawberry leaves, cauliflower leaves, grape vines, carrot peelings and ends, apple peelings (which is rare, my family eat the peel) et cetera. Also if we have any vegetables nearing going off soon, especially salads, they get prioritised as rabbit food XD
I put all my food scraps, bones, etc into a little bag in the freezer. Even though I cook almost everything from scratch, you often just dont have enough scraps to make a good broth in just one week. It usually takes about a month of scraps for me, but if I keep it all in the freezer it stays good until I can make the broth.
We make saag and add broccoli to it and we use the stems along with the crown , i think the stems give out more flavor than the crown , same with mustard greens too. I would however leave the vegetable scrap alone though.
Left over apple peels can be used with rotten apple to make vinger ,by simply putting them in a jat with a led on and you can keep adding more and more to it .
For years I've put the whole strawberry in blender creations. Likewise when I pick my own blueberries. There's no reason to remove all the berry stems or fresh leaves. Great tips
Loved this video so much! Thank you for all the amazing tips and tricks :-) We have chickens at our house, so we give them all of our food scraps/waste, but I still worry that we're wasting too much!
I freeze leftover coffee in an ice cube tray and then blend the cubes with plant milk, sweetener and cocoa powder to make ice lattes :)
Thats an awesome idea!!! I will try that and maybe make some blended coffee as well when the weather gets warmer.
YUM!
This is such an amazing idea!
Which plant milk do you use? :)
@@middleofnowhere98 I usually use soy-rice milk
People don't eat broccoli stems?? That's like half of the vegetable!

Hahahaha, yep I was thinking the same
Right!
It’s the tastiest part!
Sadly I've met so many people who don't eat the broccoli stems, which is crazy because I think it's the best part.
I had no idea people don't eat broccoli stems! I always just cut them up and ate them and assumed that was the norm 😅

One food waste hack I often use is to use any leftover beans, lentils or chickpeas to make veggies/bean burgers!

That’s going to work better with certain varieties of lemon than others. Some have super bitter pith.
My mum put the whole lemons in the blender and then use that in cakes or cookies ,she also uses oranges.
This is how we do it-especially with small, thin-skinned limes.
Wait, kiwi? The whole thing, with the fur?
That lemon hack was AMAZING!! Life changing. I’m going to be doing that from now on. Thanks for the video 😁

Thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you for this video. Now I can learn about how to storage my vegetables in the right way. I always put the onions and potatoes together 🙈
I always thought your voice was so sooothing and relaxing and still do! Ahhhhh I love your videos your recipes are amaaaazing! 💚
I recently started using my citrus peels to make candies! Super easy and only takes about an hour or so. I have a small jar of candied lemon peels. They're great for garnishing or freshening up your mouth after a meal. Next I wanna try oranges and dip them in some chocolate. mmmm
I made candied orange peel and put it in a cake. The leftover syrup made lemonade.

It is also amazing that the people who grow produce don't use or sell all that's edible, you never see the whole stems of the broccoli in stores, so much of the plant never ends up to buy, parsley root, yam leaves, celery root, carrot green tops, red beet tops, grape leaves, onion greens, celery leaves, turnip and radish green, the list goes on and on!
beautiful video.❤
Be carefull also if you store fruits like bananas with other fruits/veggies, they produce ethylene wich makes the fruits rippen faster or cause veggies to turn bad. That's why putting an avocato and a banana in a bag will make the avocado ripen faster :)
Thank you for that! Very useful to know :)
Apparently it is the same with tomatos. The also make other veggies or fruits rippen faster.
Goals 👌
Love the way you organize your kitchen!
I wouldn't put brocolli or any other cruciferous vegetable scraps in broth unless you like sulfur.
I'm so happy your back to posting a bit køre often! I missed your videos ❤️
Tip....banana peel can be dehydrated and used as plant food .
You can also make banana peel bacon.
spinach roots and large parts of stems are a good salad if theyre bioled a few minutes, and dressed with oliveoil/lemon. delicious.
I like the idea of monitoring what we uselly throw away it’s truth always the same I will cook those teams before anything else that way I don’t waste them
Amazing tips/hacks!
My favorite one is the lemon one.
And you will be so happy that you meal prepped before baby is born. Those first few weeks are amazing but hard❤
Actually, the banana peels are good for plants in another way. You can use them as a fertilizer. Just put the peels in a jar, fill it with water, close and let it be for about two days. Then water your plants with it. My mom uses this for years for her houseplants and she doesn't have to buy fertilizers at all.
After those two days, do you take the peel out? How many days does the fertilizer last withiut going bad?
Hmm interesting. Wouldn’t it stink so much after those 2 days?
Where did you get those gorgeous glass storage jars sitting behind you? They take up a lot of room, but they look great, see thru for monitoring and easy find, and they seem stackable to use vertical space.
I know someone who actually makes a smoothie out of an entire avocado with peels and seed. The color is kinda red brown but she said it’s healthier.
You are my favorite UA-camr out of everyone! Thanks for sharing and can’t wait to see the next
Great tips... I don't like broccoli stems but my dog loves them so I give them to him...
How are you freezing in glass with the contents not expanding and breaking the glass?
This is great I am eating an orange a day and the peel is not going to waste!
This is so helpful Olga, thank you! ♥️
Amazing Video. Thanks! I even took notes in my Bullet Journal 😄
Broccoli stems are yummy. I'm actually super pleased everyone else is saying the same lol! XD
For years I've put the whole strawberry in blender creations. Likewise when I pick my own blueberries. There's no reason to remove all the berry stems or fresh leaves. Great tips
I pressure can all my stock so that I can use it throughout the year and it doesn't take up room in my refrigerator
Loved this video so much! Thank you for all the amazing tips and tricks :-) We have chickens at our house, so we give them all of our food scraps/waste, but I still worry that we're wasting too much!
Wow, so many amazing tips. Thanks a lot. My favouritebone is the broccoli cole slaw.
You can dry your banana peels and powder them. After this you can use it for your garden. What you don't use, has a long shelf life as it is dried
