  • Adding an outlet to a kitchen island or peninsula can be a little challenging if you've never done one before 🤔.
    I hope this video will help you in becoming more successful on your install process. I'm a master electrician on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Currently working under the 2017 NEC code to complete this job. This video is a complete install of an outlet into a kitchen peninsula. Please feel free to fast forward through parts of the video to find the steps you need help with. Comments and questions, please leave at the bottom. I try my best to answer all of them. If you thought this video was helpful and informative in any way please crush 👍 and consider subscribing to my channel for more videos on things electricians do. May God bless you all 🙏and thanks again for watching.👍👍

    I am a cabinet installer and also a handyman that does projects like this. You are the most conciencious electrician I have seen. Not only did you care for the electrical installation but also the cuts in the cabinet. Can't tell you how many times I have had to go in and reskin a cabinet back or side panel or floor because some careless plumber or electrician didn't care about anything but their installation. I have also seen bad cabinet installers do poor cuts in cabinets to allow for existing pipes or outlets so I know it goes both ways. I appreciate your craftsmanship. Well done on the video too. NEC 2023 actually now does not require an outlet in peninsulas or islands. They are also suggesting installing pop-ups in countertops if customer still wants an outlet. They have seen enough kids and adults walk by a plugged in hot plate or coffee pot, catch the cord and pull the small appliance down resulting in burns.

    YOU no longer are required to install a receptacle in any islands by latest NEC. reason is too many kids & adults have got hung up on cords and caused mixers, crock pots, etc falling onto them. You must install wire to a box inside of island for future receptacle. Best practice would be to either install a pop up receptacle or fancy angled box on top.of island top. In my area you are not permitted to use flimsy ty rab sticky backed bases to secure anything but LOW voltage class 2 wires. Never allowed to use the double sided tape on plastic wire mold to use on 120 volt conductors. Must use screws.

      @@workingmanrondoyle3287 you will have a lot of fun when you move to 2020. Lots of receptacles required (based on SQFT). I hope your jurisdiction amends that section of the code. Then comes 2023, no receptacles required. None at all. I donno what they are smoking there at NFPA but it must cause them hyperactivity disorder. 2023 requires to bring power inside for future install though. That probably means they are probably going to make pop up receptacles mandatory going forward. I agree that there should be no receptacles on the sides of the islands. Super easy safety hazard. Pop-ups are expensive and requires drilling on the counter. Hope they will not change their mind again in 2026.

      Seems like it would have been a lot easier to feed the wire up through the cabinet floor BEFORE installing the conduit. Feeding the wire up through the floor would have been much easier with no binding up and then the wire could have been inserted into the conduit. Then the conduit could have been been zip tied in place.

      In a basement installation, most electricians would rough in ¾" pvc conduit before the floor is poured. And finish up the wire pulling during the trim out phase with a UF or single strand Thhw type of wire.
      If the house is pre-existing as in old work, you could hide the wiring in a false column (floor to ceiling) or ceiling to the top of your island.
      If I ever get the opportunity to do this installation, I'll definitely film it and post to UA-cam.

The question about protection, all the way to the box ( I asked my inspector that same question). He's the one that told me a conduit sleeve 24" is more then adequate protection above the shelf area. I'll try to add some more code references to my video's. I'm sure you and my other viewer's would appreciate that. Thanks again for watching and subscribing 👍 I really appreciate you ❤️

      Steve, NM cable is allowed in pvc schedule 80 for "physical protection" (334.15.(B).). I, too, would have expected it to go all the way to the box. This is in exposed work. Is it exposed inside a cabinet?
      He mentioned a 24 inch limit given by the inspector and that probably drove his install.
      On this limit, I believe the inspector may have it wrong because section 334.15.(C). UNFINISHED BASEMENTS allows for a conduit run from the joists to the boxes.....8 ft basement to 18 inch high box is about 6 1/2 feet of distance.
      Just remember that inspectors have plenty of power in electrical installs and opinions are like butt-cracks....everyone has their own and some smell worse than others, including mine.

    When does a wire on an peninsula need to be in a conduit, and when does it not? We're looking at running one up the side, then across the whole length of the peninsula for a middle outlet, then to the end for another. Running behind the drawers for the outlets on the back of the island near countertop. Then down a few inches to be under the drawer on the end.

    • @workingmanrondoyle3287
      @workingmanrondoyle3287  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and commenting. Wire mold can be used to protect NM wires under cabinet areas from physical damage. Conduits (PVC & EMT can be used as a sleeve for protection as long as it's (24" or under in length) AR or MC cables can also be used. The main areas to protect from physical damage are shelving area's. Areas behind dishwashers and drawers and high up under sink based cabinets are not subjected to physical damage. I hope this helps you.

    Acceptable job. But, I would’ve used MC cable and a steel gem. Then, using small strips of scrap wood or rips to make a 3-piece “bridge” strap over the MC in several locations using 5 minute epoxy. Generously applied epoxy would even work with 2-hole EMT or MC straps. That PVC deal with the stick ons is just too hokey and unprofessional looking and will wind up falling off. Alternatively, you could use wire mold with WM bushings or EMT - anything but that piece of PVC. I have even had the carpenter rip me a pair of strips to glue and form a continuous channel up the back in which to place the MC. That you flat strap. At minimum, you could use plastic wiremold with the 3M adhesive backing

      Thanks for watching William 👍 I've heard this comment a few times. I assume 🤔 it's different areas and different districts requiring different types of wire to be used under dwelling units. We have two inspection agencies in my area. All NM is approved underneath of a dwellings as long as it's not in direct contact with Earth.
