My Worst eBay Return & Are Poshmark Lives Killing Poshmark? What Sold on Poshmark, eBay, Mercari

  • It's tough out here for resellers. Poshmark lives are suffocating both Poshmark sellers and buyers alike. I had my worst eBay return of my life. Not only that, but Q4 isn't quite the selling paradise for clothing sellers like myself. Regardless, I got through the week and was able to make some sales, which I of course share with you in this video!
This video will cover the following:
✅ Why clothing, accessories, and shoes resellers are struggling in Q4
✅ A detailed account of my worst eBay return ever (hint: it had something to do with eBay's global shipping program, aka GSP)
✅ What sold on various platforms, including where I picked the item up, how long I had the item in my possession, and how much profit I made on each item

I think people are forgetting about the massive inflation we're experiencing as well. When housing costs, utilities, food and gas are higher than they've ever been, then people cut their non-necessity spending drastically. Right now people are budgeting only for Christmas gifts and even that has been pared down for many people. Gone are the days when we would see a cute pair of jeans, cardigan, or swimsuit (all those frivolous and impulsive purchases) and quickly snatch it up as most of us have very little in the bank after the 50% hike in necessary spending. The last few months we've seen costs skyrocket continuously and there doesn't appear to be an end in sight so I think things will just get worse in the reselling world. I've been trying to motivate myself to just jump in and start selling for the past year and now I'm afraid I've waited too long and missed my window to get established and be successful enough to ride out the storm.

@@simoneleone oh I'm definitely in agreement that the lives have hurt sales too. Hopefully Poshmark sees the negative affects and eliminates them bc a reduction in sales is hurting them as well. It's just mind boggling that they can see their profits drop due to a reduction in sales and not make the connection to the live shows.

Idk, when I see someone like Cayley Elaine making sales of 6k a week between reselling on Posh and Ebay, basic brands gives me hope. I think it's more due to the live shows. Disney is a non essential business yet they have profited 1 billion dollars this past year. If people really want to buy non essentials, they will find a way.

Agree. The lives are the worst thing that could have happened to us online resellers. The over kill of these lives is just shocking. My sales on eBay have surpassed Poshmark and I just started selling this past May. I went from $5000-$6000 a month to $3000-3500. I feel that these lives are a new way for resellers to source. The buyers aren’t going to sit through these awful boring live shows. People have other things to do. It’s a lot of work and not worth my time. I’m sticking to my online sales. Perhaps when I’m ready to get rid of old inventory for $5 each then I’ll do a live. Until then not happening

Totally agree about all of this-let’s hope buyers won’t sit through the absolute torture. I absolutely cannot stand the torture of how chatty sellers are. The one exception is Matt (thriftalife-but this is because he was an actual stand up comic prior to reselling)…the rest is pure torture for me, a person who only has one speed (autobahn). I just think Poshmark execs are foolish to go down this road…ultimately won’t be as profitable for them

For the first time, my eBay sales have far surpassed Posh. Posh sales dropped in the spring with the change in algorithm and then the addition of live sales have just killed my sales. Less than half of what I made last year this time on Posh. I am still going to list there but most of my energy is going to go into EBay.

I really think the average person doesn’t have the time to sit in a live and they won’t last. Time is money and the reason I think people spend more to get exactly what they want as fast as possible proves that theory for me. Also a big reason a lot of regular consumers won’t search a thrift store for the vintage item they want. The time is too valuable and they just go on eBay and find it fast from us. Posh has always been slow for me and eBay is bae! Don’t lose hope everyone! It’s a roller coaster and it will come back!

It can be discouraging but as Christians in all things give thanks, when it’s slow thank you Lord for time to rest and spend with family, when it’s busy thank you Lord for the time of prosperity. If a item sits for a year go back look at the listing maybe errors in the listing maybe title wrong maybe wrong category, if all that is fine . Then please take item out your store & trash or donate it. These types of items that sit 1 year+ weigh down your store and hurt your overall sales .trash it .focus on what people want don't focus on O it cost me 1$ or free so I'm post it. Hope that helps ✌️

This video is terrific as it doesn’t hype anything but shows the reality. Since live shows, Poshmark sales have ranked. Interestingly enough, one feature they wanted us to use heavily was offer to likers and now it does nothing. Most of my sales come from offers to me. They seem to hype features, at present it is live shows, and sales relate directly to what Poshmark is promoting. Sounds like a very controlled algorithm with someone steering the ship who has no clue how to make big bucks. Live Sales can’t be making a lot for Poshmark compared to traditional methods.

I’m still getting sales, but not super amazing. I would love to see Poshmark organize the live shows if the intent is to continue them. So maybe a smaller number of shows per day to make things more fair to people who aren’t doing shows. I saw yesterday that the shows that were live were on average getting 9 or 10 people, whereas on Whatnot a show that I joined had like 150 people - I would guess that Posh shows may not be as successively due to lower numbers of people attending (because so many shows throughout the day).

In that time I quit reselling twice for about 5 months each time and of course came back to it but each time I came back I was happier than I was before doing it. I hope this makes sense outside of my head. lol So my advice would be if someone feels like they need to quit reselling, then they should do that and do something else for a while and see where life takes you. I assumed it was an inflation/holiday thing but also acknowledged that I have a lot of summer and spring clothing still listed. Thank you for weighing in.
Also this return story is so similar to what just happened to me but with Poshmark who was not only unhelpful; they put me and my buyer in this endless limbo and inconvenience because they don't READ the details; they just send a form letter. That happened to me but I’m in Canada and sold to the USA, it was MaxMara too ! But a $500 jacket and she returned it as item not as described. EBay was actually so frustrating to deal with , it was exactly like your situation except there was not someone that actually answered my questions 😅 it was so horrible that I ended up refunding the full amount and letting her keep it 😢 it wasn’t worth stress but now I don’t put up my higher priced item bc I’m terrified 😅!

I totally agree....I'm ready to quit after 7 years of selling on and off. I love clothes, shoes and Jewelry..... I thought since resale and sustainability came on trend and I started to do much better in my last attempts to sell I could build it up again....but now the live shows (Poshmark and Whatnot) are killing it for me as well. I'm like where do they get all this stuff?? Pallets? I'm assuming all these live sellers got their stuff from the Goodwill bins or by the pound in order to sell something for $3, $5, or even $8!! I'm not cut out for that environment. Where I live, thrift stores are no longer "thrift" and all the stores are asking prices for which I would be selling an item. Plus, platform fees are high (when we're making nickels and dimes they are making millions!) and then I discovered List Perfectly, so that's another big fee. I will admit however that since I am older I do not have all the trending brands...I just don't find them where I live. But my items are quality. I'm realizing I am not selling the right things. But what do I know about electronics, designer bags, toys, and sport sneakers that are at the top of buyers list? Nada! :(

We have a few problems from time to time. What you went through would be a horrible experience. Our worst experience this month was that a customer wanted to make a return on makeup which was said to be the wrong color. We checked the order and our inventory and confirmed that we did send them the right color. We accepted the return and when it arrived, it was a product that we have never seen or was not a brand that we carry. The good news is that eBay took care of the problem and refunded both us and the buyer. However we are a registered dealer for the makeup that we sell and can not resell the one that was sent to us for contractual reasons.

I went 5 days with NO sales on Poshmark, Mercari or eBay, then I broke the losing streak by selling a two-pack of....SOCKS, lol. So glad to hear eBay is rocking it for you, I've actually had months where I've not even made enough money to offset my eBay subscription of what, like $21 bucks? Embarrassing! But I do admit, I'm not crossposting enough on there so they're ignoring me. But I have a great sales banner. Yeah, no clue what's going on because I increased my inventory by 250 in the last 2 months at least on Poshmark & 90% of that was NEW items clothing & home goods. I sold some of those same items last year & they flew off the shelves but not this year & everyone is wanting things WAY cheaper.
I have to do some serious thinking about what to do with all my inventory, listed & yet to be listed. I may even be returning some of my retail arbitrage to the stores to get my money back if they don't sell in the return window time allotted. A bummer for sure! I may end up just bringing a ton of stuff to local consignment, but the bummer of that is they only accept things seasonally, so then I'll be stuck with 3 racks of fall/winter items :(

I sell 90% on Poshmark. Reselling seems extra hard lately because there’s so much inconsistency. Sales tanked when Poshmark changed the algorithm the first time and we had to learn how to list according to the new algorithm. Then we hit summer slowdown. Then Poshmark announced they were changing the algorithm back to the old way and we had about a week or 2 of good sales, then the live shows rolled out and sales tanked again. It’s been a year of trying to keep up with the changes that Poshmark is making. Change can be good, but, honestly, Poshmark just needs to sit down and chill out for a bit. They’re trying to do too much and it’s confusing the sellers trying to zig and zag to keep up. I’m going to keep at it for at least another 6 months to see what happens, but I’m truly annoyed with Poshmark at the moment.

Your situation with the GSP on eBay is a very good cautionary tale! There is a very ugly loophole that exists, and that is if the buyer opens an INAD case. I can't recall who it was, but a pretty well-known reseller had an issue of a coat that they sent to the UK that had an INAD case and the outcome was gnarly. I think the option was to spend something like $130 to pay for shipping back to the US because it was heavy/bulky or forfeit the item (and this was something pretty high value, so not an easy walk away situation). I am not a huge eBay seller, but I don't offer GSP for items that I've paid up for...it's a bummer because I am probably missing some opportunities, but it makes me feel a little safer.

I’m also an old school thrifter and have been able to buy clothes for me and my kids at super affordable prices. Now clothes are so picked through by resellers and so many people are trying to make a profit. I wish there was more of a balance. My closet is small (under 300 active listings), but I usually know the type of ebb and flow that happens with my closet. The sales were enough for me as a part time seller. But ever since the live shows started, my sales and activity on PM has PLUMMETED. Comps for my favorite brands like Madewell/Lululemon/Athleta have gone to Walmart bargain rack territory. Good for buyers, terrible for sellers. But for me, the worst part of this is the constant disregard other bigger sellers and influencers have had for those of us struggling. I can't do a live show because of mental illness and my personal living situation. Even a silent auction wouldn't help as I don't want to give my clothes away for under $10. I sell hard goods as well and that’s dead too, even more so. The government dropping the resell tax ceiling from $20,000 to $600 has destroyed many sellers.

oh no - I'm sorry to hear that! I thought my generalization would be true that hard good sellers do better during Q4.

Girl, did she really think she was going to get a 100% silk max Mara dress for $80?????
Posh live is killing sales for the majority. And it’s still not an even playing field since not every seller can go live.

I think all sellers can apply now? Although perhaps they have closed it off to new people for now because there are 5927650 live sales happening at any given moment...

I disagree. The listing said "silk". Not "silk blend, no content label". I would be pissed off if I was mislead that way. In fact, I have been mislead in that way. A seller listed a bag as "leather" and when I received it, it was very obviously NOT leather. Some sort of plastic. I absolutely would not have paid what I did for it if I had known it wasn't leather. I opened a case and eventually got my money back. The lesson here is to be very accurate about the content in your listings.

Maxmara doesn't sell for what it used to anymore. Look up the comps and sell through. $80 may be low but $100 to $150 is what they sell for. It used to be one of my favorite brands to sell but I've had to lower my expectations

@@wzrdreams My return on eBay was because the buyer did NOT read the listing and the huge massive letters the I put at the bottom. Ebay found for the buyer anyways. :( Ebay lets the buyer return an item NO MATTER WHAT :(
