The problem with Carnivore is that you'll reach your desired weight, be fit as heck, feel the best you have in your life, lose any symptoms that you had if you had any, and get hit on by attractive members of both sexes. You become an unbearably positive individual because you don't actually have anything to complain about. You end up raising healthy, happy, successful kids, have a fulfilling relationship with yourself and others, you have time to post about it on social media, and you hopefully make a small positive contribution to the world. :)
Your comment struck a chord with me. I dream of not being hungry all the time to be lean. My whole life being lean has meant calorie restriction followed by binge eating all the foods I denied myself. I tried carnivore for a few weeks but didn't have any less hunger. Is something wrong with me?
@@rachelbrondel5858 his comment struck a chord in me as well, cause I’ve been doing it for 18 days and my body feels and looks so good I let myself eat whatever I wanted today(hence the problem with carnivore being it worked so well) Got a steak ready to start back on carnivore tomorrow tho. your body may need longer than a few weeks to start really building the snowball into an avalanche of positive effects. I got such great effects so fast that it made my willpower with food go past what I thought possible for myself.
@@rachelbrondel5858 It can take 3 weeks and longer to become fat adapted, going from a glucose metabolism to a fat metabolism for energy. Only 15 to 30 % of calories is protein, 70 to 85 % of calories is healthy fats, such as butter. If you were hungry you needed more fat, and or protein, and or time with the lifestyle. Enough of those three kills hunger after you've transitioned from glucose / carbs / sugar. More steak and butter. You WILL succeed. :) IMO. (AND plenty of SALT).
I grow an organic garden year round and I stopped eating any produce from stores. I made myself so sick eating green leafy vegetables and grilled salmon for 2 weeks. My stomach was a mess. I saw all this stuff about carnivore and thought what a bunch of BS!! I also thought, I can do ANYTHING for 30 days. I tried it and lost 35#. I had way more energy and was never hungry. So, 6 months later, I’m choosing to eat this way because I’m a 50’s woman post menopausal and I have never felt better.
@@ianstuart5660 - thank you. I’m so happy I was bull headed enough to try this for 30 days just to satisfy myself it was bullshit lol. Best decision of my life. If I had known about this way of eating in my 20’s I would have ruled the world. ❤
@@catcan221 - yes! Me too. All the naysayers have not given it a full 100% go. They are missing out on life!! That’s just what “they” want. Doctors want us sick and under their medical kickbacks.
I wish Westman would either debate or discuss the carnivore diet with Dr. Baker or Dr. Berry. Hash out the subject. They've been on this diets for more than a decade and even longer. Every person I've talked to who have gone on this diet have good results. Weight loss being the fastest most obvious.
I have been carnivore for about 16 months now. Lost over 150 pounds, reversed type 2, reversed high BP, reversed low T, and came off of all medication. My yearly bloodwork all shows improvement as well. My mother decided to try it after seeing my results. She reversed NAFLD, and stage 4 renal failure. Her kidney function was at 29% last year when she started. Shes now at 86%.
I really love Dr. Westman's humble approach to new knowledge. It shows he has wisdom in addition to intelligence. He's not trying to defend his own position to the exclusion of truth. Nor is he blindly accepting the other side. Truth seeker. Refreshing. Deep respect sir, from a current carnivore.
If there was money to be made in carnivore, then there would be plenty of studies. The problem with the carnivore diet is it makes you healthy and that hurts a lot of peoples bottom line.
This is the problem.. The food industry cant engineer profit out of Carnivore. Meat, fish, dairy, eggs are all straight from the animal. And it has the unfortunate effect of eliminating the desire to snack! At least they can sell Keto Snacks and wierd cooking ingredients for Keto.
Started my journey after finding Dr. Westman 3 years ago and followed his regimen strictly. Although I did initially lose some weight, my metabolic problems were still there (insulin resistance, hypertension). After switching to carnivore only was I able to lose the rest and get off medication for hypertension, HgBa1c went down, Triglycerides down, HDL up, all aches and pains are gone, more muscle mass and strength I never knew I had, skin cleared up, hair is growing thicker and healthier. Have never felt better. 50 yr old female here.
I was keto for 2 years. I switched to carnivore 6 weeks ago. I lost 15 pounds after a long stall. Most of my hip pain went away. I was seriously considering a hip replacement. I’ll probably stick to carnivore the rest of my life. I’m 61 now and weigh 135 pounds. I feel like I’m in my twenties now. I no longer procrastinate and I feel very motivated and no longer depressed. Thank you for your honest review. BTW we raise all our meat.
This is what an honest researcher looks like. He doesn't make blanket statements against it without the benefit of any research like so many do. He is honest that he doesn't know but recognizes that many people are benefiting.
Thank you for coming on and admitting you don't know everything, Dr. Westman. I know when you share an opinion you do so from a position of certitude, rather than bluff.
I agree with your comment very much, I hope Dr. Westman does a follow up video to this comment section,, most comment sections do not seem this genuine. The pro carnivore anecdotes all over social media is becoming overwhelming.
I respectfully disagree. People can provide their opinion, its a God given right, but why doing a video with the photos of Dr. Berry and others saying "THE TRUTH ABOUT CARNIVORE DIETS" just to conclude that "I do not know." That is bull. (our opinion). Wouldn't it better to provide an opinion of what you know, rather than waste people's time to just say "I do not know." I do not see the point. (our humble sincere opinion)
@@Carlos_Costa a very fair point, but I am going under the assumption that many people have asked for such a video, and he did not lie. Lie. The truth about carnivore diets is, as he said, it's probably okay but he doesn't really know for sure.
As a post-menopausal woman who has been morbidly obese or obese since being a teenager, it was carnivore that made the weight loss possible after I stalled on a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting. Some of us are so metabolically deranged that the extreme of carnivore is necessary.
@@solitudeofheart1470 even if you eat carbs again , you can always stop again.Falling off the wagon isn't the issue...how much I berate myself is the issue .If I don't condemn myself for a mistake , I can get over it and start again tomorrow.
Every once in a while I will eat foods that are not completely carnivore. I just tell myself that I am going to gain a couple of pounds, and I will have to work hard the next couple of weeks to get it back down. I have never beat myself up for it. From the beginning, I said I was going to eat avocado, drink wine rarely, and eat limited dairy. The wine and dairy definitely kicked me out of ketosis. And I just get strict for a while afterward. This is long-term, so you have to do this your way and understand that what you do is going to affect your why.
I absolutely agree with this doctor, the carnivore diet isn't a bad Idea, but the problem today with the food industry, everything is often lacking nutrients including meats, so vegetables might as well be essential these days
It totally reversed my depression and anxiety, no more joint pain, no more sleep apnea, thyroid antibodies lowered, no more gas or bloating, no more IBS, 45 pounds gone….mostly beef and limited dairy. No plan of eating a SAD again.
My partner is a Nurse and didn't approve of me starting on carnivore, however she can't deny the results. I'm mid fifties and no longer have, high blood pressure, IBS, sleep apnea, congestion, joint pain, cloudy vision and 15lbs in weight. Any restrictive diet should result in weight loss and lower blood pressure, less sleep apnea and joint pain would result but I don't think it can account for all the other benefits. I'm building muscle and can do more exercise with no pain and less recovery time.
❤ Dr. Eric Westman you are amazing. I aleays twll people to start keto with you. I followed Keto for 3.5 years. I did good with it loosing weight, no longer being diabetic and other illnesses. But no mater what i did, i couldn't get my blood pressure to regulate. I also have IBS and inflammation. I did a 90 day challenge on Carnivore and my bp became normal. My inflamation went away. My joint pain went away. When I tried to go back, all the bad came back. So I stayed carnivore.
Also Dr. Cywes is an MD, as is Dr. Paul Mason. "Nutrition with Judy" is - certified nutritionist. Agree, plenty of people in the mix that are not just lay people influencers.
@@catcan221 just listening to Doc Cywes new youtube video, and Doc Mason is amazing as well, especially with his work on fiber...are they both carnivore though? I know they are at least keto, but didn't know they were strictly carnivore.
@@billpoole8541 I read some notes in episode 306 about see how we raise our son in a carnivore family. Also he refers to things that lead me to believe he is at least ketovore if not carnivore. Similar with Dr. Mason. He may not be full but many of his talks sound as if he must be more than not.
I'm a 73 year old male who lives in France. Two and a half years ago I weighed 254 and had a myriad of health issues. I went on keto for a year and half and lost 50 pounds. Then I went on carnivore for 9 months and I lost another 30 pounds. For the past 3 months my weight has stayed around 172. My blood pressure is now within the normal range, I'm longer pre-diabetic, I have no more skin rashes, no more acid reflux, no more sleep apnea, and I have vastly improved energy and mental clarity. Am I 100% carnivore? No. I do eat a couple of avocados and bananas every week to increase my magnesium and potassium, and I do have one glass of wine with dinner twice a month. Other than that, I only eat fatty meats, eggs, seafood, crème fraîche, and cheese. I feel as good as I did in my 30's.
Keep in mind that 'carnivore' is simply another type of a 'keto diet'--meaning a diet that uses nutritional ketosis. The internet versions of the 'keto diet' with products and nostrums is NOT what I teach.
Well, I'm convinced. I've read thousands of comments from people that changed their life on carnivore with no negative effects. And my own experience- I no longer have an eye floater which I had ~35 years. No more dandruff or skin tags. I've lost weight like no other diet. It's liberating to have a grocery list with just a dozen items. My nutrition panel is golden. I do sup with C, K2-MK7, and magnesium glycinate (at night). Also sip a good-tasting cod liver oil since I don't like a fishy taste (NOT the rancid pills. Better to take nothing). Not going back ever
Ahhh… Dr. Eric Westman… the “page 4” doctor from Duke University😁…so nice to put a face to a name… read so much about you and your work involving the keto diet I wanted to know your thoughts about the carnivore diet and here you are on UA-cam talking about it… I appreciate you for all your hard honest work and thanks for this video
Great video, I started keto but switched to carnivore over 5 years ago because almost all the keto influencers were about making versions of standard American diet replacements. I still stay in ketosis most of the time(except for an hour or two after my meal). My typical day of eating is 6 eggs, 1/4 lb of sharp white cheddar, 1/4 lb chopped up grass fed beef fat and half pound grass fed ground beef. Cook up everything in my skillet and enjoy. Simplest diet I have ever had and plan to continue this way for the rest of my life.
I srsly enjoy not cooking I’m a major foodie/“healthfood nut” cooking was my life! I love the utter simplicity of carni. Truly. I may just be timing this carni journey with being sick of being a mom tbh--but whatever it is, I’m carni for life! (I’m 58 so it might only couple more decades but Ima ENJOY them like I never could!)
Dropping out of ketosis after a meal is normal as the body needs to produce the glycogen needed by the brain, etc. Perfectly normal. I haven't run the numbers and I don't know your body type but that sounds like too much protein and too little fat. Not a criticism by any means...just a thought.
I love the simplicity too! We walk into the store, pick up three kinds of meat and go home. Fifteen minutes, tops. I also got started looking at carnivore because of the keto influencer crowd. It felt so ... trying to say this nicely... 'convenient' that a diet that was based off simple food became a complex marketable lifestyle. I like that carnivore isn't as full of people trying to sell me shakes and twenty ingredient recipies for mock-carbywhatever.
I have been doing keto with great success for the past 5+ years and I am not sold on the carnivore diet. My diet is mostly meat but a little veggies and berries mixed in.
If your health is good, you probably won't benefit from strict carnivore. Variety is good so long as you keep below your carb threshold. Stay in ketosis my friend.
@Sonja Walker Reactions, Commentary and Other why would i do it when what I am doing working for me. I hit my goal and maintained for 4 years now. I am 64 for the the doctor is amazed at my health, I don't take any meds any more. Feel like I am 35
Hi dr you may remember me I spoke at one on your conferences. I got started with you on Keto and now have changed to carnivore. The issue that was decisive for me that you didn’t mention is plant toxins. The results people get by just eliminating vegetables are amazing. More than any nutrition issue this is the difference maker to me.
5841 before I ever went keto I green juiced regularly for a couple years spinach and kale were main ingredients cut out sugar felt great for awhile although I had kidney stones 3 × once before ever changing diet but I never heard of oxalates, I suddenly in a very short time gained weight, my blood pressure raised to the point my Dr wanted me on statins, which I refused, I developed ED I had tingling in my hands and feet, arthritis in my back and hands. I went keto for 6 months my blood pressure leveled out in a couple weeks but not much other improvement I went carnivore and reversed all the prediabetic symptoms also I never realized how much brain fog I had, my dad died with Alzheimers a very real conscern, type 3 diabetes some call it. I now have been Carnivore 3 years I have had some issues from Oxalate dumping, days I just don't feel 100 percent, Sally Norton explains that well, probably from all my gardening and green juicing I'll be 65 in Sept. 6th and never want to go back, also I had skin tag under armpits for years they went away my hands are better then when I was in my 40s I cut and sell firewood and split by hand to supplement income and my hands are great. Keep on keeping on is what I say life is so much better.
I was a vegetarian/vegan for most of my life. Struggled with many of the same health issues all of the other ex-vegetarians/vegans complain about. 1 year ago I developed gut disbiosis (for the second time) and while being treated with antibiotics and antifungals I somehow found my way to Dr. Saldino, Dr. Baker and Dr. Berry. I started carnivore and while it healed my gut issues, here is what I struggled with: constant cramps in my legs and feet no matter how much salt I added to food or how many electrolytes I drank, insomnia, hair loss and finally after 1 year I developed significant arrhythmias. I also found that strict carnivore made me a bit irritable. I was a BBB&E girl. I would watch all of the carnivore doctors' You Tube videos, I bought their books and read all of the success stories but still couldn't achieve the same results. I finally added in some non starchy vegetables and low sugar fruit and viola! I feel much better and happier. No more leg cramps, no more arrhythmias and sleeping much better. I'm only writing this in case there are others like me that don't thrive on a 100 % carnivore diet and wonder why. I happen to love veggies, nothing like roasted cauliflower. Yum. I do find I feel my best when my carbs are very low and a stay away from grains, legumes and most dairy.
Cool! Why did that work? What did you add that fixed your problem? It's a shame that you didn't add back one food at a time until the problem was resolved. That could have provided some very valuable information.
@@graveseeker I'm not sure why that worked. After learning Dr. Saladino added in fruit and honey for the same problems, I tried that but it didn't feel right to me. It did help with the muscle cramps, arrhythmias and insomnia but I noticed it made me hungry and my blood sugar seemed a bit goofy. So I decided to add in some salads and non-starchy veggies and that did the trick. I have no idea if it's the minerals in the veggies or the small amount of carbs or both, but I feel balanced now. One other thing I also noticed, is that on 100% carnivore I tended to get stomach aches but they went away as well when I added in the veggies.
@micheilecostanzo6481...same here...I had to add back some veggies for balance. mine was carrots to a fatty chuck roast, onion, garlic and bay leaf...was the perfect balance f me/hubby eats the potatoes. 😊
It could be that you were dumping oxalates, and adding some veggies slowes that up according to Sally Norton, I'm not that well versed in it, but have experienced heavy dumping which strangely enough can show up as heavy plac on teeth which I get no matter if I brush and floss after every meal. Some people have horrible symptoms but balancing the right amount of carbs very low and meat gives great health benifits.
I respect your curiocity to new things for you. Five years of carnivory after seven years of keto and I feel fine and healthy. In nutshell, carnivory finished the healing processes that keto starts.
The one thing I don't hear others mention with the carnivore diet perks is, it reduces the production of trash and plastics that come from packaged foods from a standard diet. I've noticed less trash production, which is a win for the environment as well.
I’ve noticed that too! Significantly less packaging and trash. And I am happy to say that contrary to what people imagine - my food budget is way down as well! Without any processed foods or veggies that I’m not eating fast enough and have to throw out… If I want to I can buy ground beef for $4 a pound and throw in a few eggs and butter and I have gotten more nutrient dense food for $6-7 for the whole day. And then the unbelievable health benefits and energy which are the main event! I wouldn’t have believed it until I started living it.
For a few years now, I have thought about this. I think that vestigial organ we call the appendix may have been from when we were more herbivore in nature. Our ancestors mutated and adapted into a keto/carnivore based creature it stopped being useful and is now vestigial.
That's the best terminology yet, Dr Westman, "Glucose Based Metabolism" In the last 40 years, more so, all diets are glucose based metabolism, nothing else, even some keto, can come under this banner, if you look at how some promote it. Eating meat only, is about the only way to avoid glucose, nil glucose by mouth, and just let the liver do its job. Thanks again, Dr Westman, for all your fine videos.
One thing I find very interesting .. is that the animals/mammals that eat meat, fish, seafood and fatty sources of animal protein .. are the intelligent ones ✨ Food for thought !!
Cows have four stomachs and break down nutrients better than we do, storing them in the meat. 85% or more of us have MTHFR uptake abnormalities, which means we don’t uptake all the vitamins we eat. We eat the meat, we magically bypass that problem and start filling our nutritional deficiencies… hence fighting off diseases and feeling better than we ever have before.
I predominantly eat meat, eggs, sea food and a dairy. But I also have some fermented veggies and occasionally berries, fruits, and nuts. I guess mushrooms are also not bad.
I've been researching this topic for some time and have watched countless videos and read countless papers on it. This is the first or one of very few discussions I have seen that comes across as objective, reasonable, measured, and unbiased. Thanks, Doc. I feel better.
@zamfirtoth6441 Hello friend. I know I've encountered you before. I once said that your username resembles a star trek villain. I see you're still terrorizing the community, lol!!
Thank you friend, my screen name is just humorous to me, it spawned from commercials in the 70s to purchase albums(or 8 tracks) from Zamfir, master of the pan flute...lol. I don't know why all my posts are coming in twice, u tube either ghosts my posts or duplicates them. IDK why.
I started Carnivore 81 days ago. I was sceptical but decided to give it a try. I have lost 46lbs and feel amazing. I didn't have a lot of health issues before starting, but I can say I sleep better, and for the first time ever I wake up every morning without an alarm clock. I have so much energy I actually want to work out now whereas in the past I have always had to force myself. I can only go by how I feel, and whilst there are some questions about the long-term effects, I can't see how this can be bad when I feel this good.
Dr. Westman I have been following your for years and respect your opinions above so many others. This is not your first rodeo. I have been keto for 6 months but been considering carnivore bc of some residual issues. I respect your openness, kindness and brilliance so much. Thank you for giving your life to help people like me, a misguided nutritionist…trained in all the wrong things. Only until after I had to change my diet bc of my own health issues that I realized how important our food truly is to our healing. God bless you sir. Forever grateful for your work!
Wow Heather, what a wonderful open and honest comment. Re-learning must have been quite a challenge in the face of all your training. I am not a trained nutritionist but I certainly had to unlearn the fear of natural fats. It was very real for me. Eric Westman is a blessing to us all. Thank you for sharing your experience and discovery.
There are two ways to look at this issue- the microscopic correlation vs the macroscopic causation points of view, and the short term vs long term overall health effects. Dr. Westman mentioned that there is no long term studies of the health effects of the carnivore diet, however there are many long term studies of the long term positive effects of the plant based whole food diet, outlined most definitively in the book 'The China Study'.
I did carnivore for a month to try to cure chronic GERD. It wasn't very successful, but I'm still dancing around the carnivore diet with loose keto and ongoing experiments. Regarding Inuit and scurvy - I believe they got their vitamin C from pine needles, and Europeans who came did get scurvy before learning that trick. So I'm not convinced scurvy couldn't be an issue on carnivore. I also got leg cramps on carnivore. But that's just my experience. I'll probably still try it again.
I ate low carb for years. But I saw the best results when I tested ketones and was in ketosis. For me to get into ketosis I must eat mostly meat. It is wonderful to lose the rest of the weight and to have less body aches, less cravings and better mental health. If I cheat, with dark chocolate or nuts, I can get back into ketosis fairly quickly. The first thing I noticed when I ate mostly meat is smoother fingernails and less IBS. I simply feel better eating more meat.
Great view on it and basically experiment and see. I did Carnivore for over a year and I find I feel better and do better on a High Fat Keto way of life. I do enjoy having some veg now and then. I think the same would be said of our ancestors. This is The Warden ;)
There are many different styles of carnivore diet. I have been doing Paul saladino md animal-based diet for one year and I have never felt better at 51 years old. All my chronic joint pain went away just like most people on the carnivore diet. I believe it's from all the high oxalate vegetables and nuts.
I love this doctors take on the carnivore diet. He doesn't jump to "oh no, cholesterol!" instead he looks at it from a unbiased viewpoint and I think that is important going forward
I implement carnivore days into my diet, but I find that a healthy variety of both plant and animal based foods (keto friendly of course) ultimately works better for me. Both physically and mentally.
Thank you for your informative and balanced video, Dr Westman. I appreciate your lack of bias, either way, and your wish to ensure that people make food decisions for optimal health. Love from the UK x
All I can say is eating meat-heavy works. In 2022 while taking care of an elderly parent I sold my house, packed, quit my job, moved us across the state, bought a house, renovated it and moved us in. All while eating once a day of fatty meat and eggs primarily. I would not have had the energy to do that if I was eating carbs. I was 50 at the time
The carnivore diet is wonderful for my sugar addiction! I feel better more energy and my allergies are gone! I may add a salad or bake potato once every 2 weeks but that’s it! I’m 55 and feel like I did at 30
Great video Doc, i have been carnivore for about 16 months now, was very obese, lost 85 LB, diabetes completely gone, and i am back to train again. I am almost 40 never thought that would be possible. I recommend to everyone.
That's a nice balanced way of looking at it. I've found a happy midway point where I tend to be mostly carnivore during the week and keto at the weekends as I quite like a keto pudding or cauliflower rice with a sloppy chicken curry. But it's the golden rule as we all know, keep your carbs as low as possible.
Sir i am a hyper carnivore veterinarian due to health issues from a decade of being a low fat vegetarian... it has been studied and lectured in our nutrition class that it is beneficial for carnivores to eat the whole herbivore prey including the partially digested fruits or grass in the intestines as well as all the gut enzymes and gut bacteria of the animal. For pack predators it has been observed that the alphas get access to the organs and guts and of course the fatty meat while those lower in the food chain get the scraps. For some predators like birds and reptiles they even eat their prey whole, guts, bones, fur or feathers including whatever plant, insect or animal material that prey ate. For us humans we most likely used to be omnivores like the great apes who partially or rather greatly lost the ability to digest the harder to process fibrous plant parts or evolved to eating more meat and as we learned to cook and thru the ice age where plants would be hard to come by. I still believe we are evolved specialist carnivores who can eat some plant parts specially if processed properly and we can even survive eating a totally plant based diet... but if someone is metabolically compromised for whatever reason ... a pure carnivore , therapeutic keto, or a low carb diet would be a safer option than a plant based diet unless you have a condition or disease where meat causes you health problems like that lone star tick disease??? As dr berry said "meat for sustenance... plants for survival and medicine in the right dose"
@@zamfirtoth6441 the evidence is there ... its just for whatever reason some people refuse to believe it as in most cases... it goes against their religion. I also believe in the divine but i acknowledge science be it's mistakes, breakthroughs, and evolving discovery and explanation of things....
I believe many things on earth evolved, and the fossil record shows it, 'cave man's to modern human seems to have just 'happened' not enough transitory evidence..thus the term missing link.
So no major down sides, people generally report major health improvements, and don't miss plants in their diet after a while. It's almost as if it's what we are meant to do. Sounds like a winner to me!👍
In regards to carnivore being how our ancestors ate, I think it's important to take into account old food traditions we may have lost. Like eating liver, marrow-based broths, fat-based meats. A lot of these are no longer practiced as consumer tastes changed so it's up to us meat eaters to bring them back for our own diets. For example, finding an untrimmed steak is very difficult in a chain supermarket, and our town (of over one million!) doesn't have a butcher. Being carnivore right now very much reminds me of the early days of modern keto. It was hard to find butter and full-fat dressing. Now, it's untrimmed steaks that are hiding. Guess we end up hunter gatherer in the end, eh?

Excellent video. Thank you Dr. Westman. Very valuable input. I came to know about Dr. Westman after I went carnivore, after having been on the keto diet for approximately a month. I still watch all his videos and think everything that comes from him is valuable, regardless of what diet exactly you adhere to. If he were ever to come to the conclusion that the carnivore diet is 'the way to go', it would certainly make me very happy, although I am convinced already that it is, for myself at least 😃
Isn’t the keto diet basically a carnivore diet ? A handful of leafy greens is the difference… what do the leafy greens add, a little vitamin C ? Thank you everyone for your experiences, it will help me make the decision to go carnivore.😮
@@susanc5602 Well, strict carnivore diet leaves out all vegetation. I find that I feel the best if I keep away from any of the vegetables and even spices. The first things I notice when I've had any vegetables is that skin and joints are not as good as If I skipped them. Dairy will also cause drawbacks for me, although I seem to tolerate regular butter in moderation (a stick a day or so). I stay away from the leafy greens 100%, but sometimes "allow myself" a tiny bit of garlic and olives for variety, even though I know that it has s tiny bit of negative effect. I would say that I probably don't do that more than once a week, because I notice the drawbacks and am reminded that I really shouldn't fool myself :). Also, leaving out the vegetables just simplifies things if you are tracking how many carbs you consume 😃. I suppose that if there were no drawbacks for me from eating vegetables, I would have stuck with keto, but I wen't carnivore to see if it was more beneficial and it certainly is, for myself 😃. I would suggest you try it out and see if it makes a difference to you or not. If you can handle the vegetables well without any noticable negative effects, in your shoes I would probably stick with keto 😃. Best of luck to you!
Thank you! As mentioned, I will need published, peer-reviewed, prospective studies, with a comparison group if possible, to conclude that the carnivore diet is 'safe and effective'--the same process for FDA approval of a drug.-Dr. Westman
Like Dr. Westman says, if you go carnivore you eat all the parts to get the nutrients. The liver in a cow has a lot of the necessary nutrients and vitamins, but people can't subsist without it. There's a freeze-dried organ supplement you can get, but I'm not sure if it keeps the delivery of these nutrients the way eating the actual organs would. I have been doing about 90% carnivore with the odd sugar snack like berries every few days and I have absolutely turned a corner with my health. Blood pressure. Kidney functions. Energy levels. All are much higher on this. But you need to eat really fatty meat and the organs.
Dessicated organs provide the needed nutrients but are expensive. If you can't cook and eat the organs, or even eat them raw as some people do, the easiest and cheapest way to accomplish that is to have the organs ground into your hamburger meat and add some (tolerable) spices if necessary.
Our ancestors started out as scavengers. That's why our stomach acid pH is closer to carrion eaters. It was the fat rich bone marrow we scavenged that increased the size of our brains.
"Lots of people have abandoned keto in favor of the carnivore diet." Since meat essentially has zero (okay, near-zero) carbohydrates, doesn't a carnivore diet count as a Ketogenic diet? Except you don't have to carefully track how much of each food you eat, since you can eat as much as you want and be under 20g of total carbs per day. Right?
I was never successful with keto diets. I halfheartedly did the carnivore to prove it was bs! Now, I’m 6 months in and feeling amazing so, I chose to eat this way. It’s not a fad diet …it’s a way of eating that makes you feel amazing. ❤
@@Mantis858585 it’s a weaning process. I don’t eat salad (just romaine with Caesar dressing) everyday. Everyone has to find their own path to better health, but I believe high protein/fat and very low carb is working for me in many ways!

I love how everybody calls the carnivore diet “extreme”, but they don’t consider the 60 to 90 teaspoons of sugar that the average American consumes daily (250 g of carbohydrates +20 g of added sugars) extremely concerning?!
I went into it from a lifetime of fitness coaching (now 73 ) " If you eat as a carnivore, live like a carnovore" was my advice. I was an ovo lacto vegetarian, with no issues. A reason, again philosophically was " animals can be force fed and " chemicalised " whereas a carrot will only grow if it gets what a carrot needs " I tried carnivore out of curiosity about Feb this year, not to overcome any aliments (I had none..unlike Jordan Peterson and many others ), with no change to my exercise activities. Im 6'5" , and was 118kgs, and have been 110 kgs after two months . One interesting factor. I used to run about 8kls at a steady pace and my resting heart rate was as low as 32 bpm. Since carnivore, I run out of wind after about 500mts, and my r.h.r is now about 60. (I have been doing Wim Hof breathing for about 5 yrs every day). That seems to tie into my original philosophy, because carnivores " sprint " (anaerobic ) not run for long distance (aerobic). Also I understand that oxidative stress is linked to aerobic activity..the prime cause of cellular damage. This is a difficult subject because it covers so many areas of specialisation, not least of which (and the least understood ) being the placebo effect. Perhaps the axiom of all philosophies is still " Know Thyself ".
Is it possible to 'know thyself' relative to 40+ years from now? We're all playing the odds. With all of the chemicals sprayed on vegetables and DNA modifications being done, is a carrot really a carrot? Yes, I'm aware that similar things are happening to our livestock (and the food they eat). Our system needs a total overhaul...I think that species survival depends on it. Your experiences are interesting. I hope that further research is done on it. So you lost weight, which might explain your loss of performance, did you eat enough protein? What is your opinion of carnivore overall? Are you still on it?

Dr. Westman, I have listened to, read, and followed you for several years now, and I increasingly appreciate your approach. I must say, though, that in this particular video, you make a point that I wish you would dedicate a video to: that of the difference between what we eat and what our bodies can or cannot - either efficiently or at all - absorb from what we eat (or the deleterious things we do absorb from a modern, western diet. Whether carnivore, keto-carnivore, keto, vegetarian, or vegan, all well-formulated - not enough is known by those of us who are not in the medical and independent nutritional research field about the the whole point of improved diets: what percentage of nutrients from these foods is absorbed by the body, and which are the essential, useful, and helpful nutrients we much concern ourselves with. Thanks for this incredibly educational and practical series.
I enjoyed your take. I have seen the study that pulled carnivore experiences from social media groups and interviewed them. I would disagree that it's people who do well that go to these groups. I'm sure that is true is some cases, but I follow some of the groups in that study, and I can tell you that I joined to ask questions, to lurk, and have questions answered, because I thought I wasn't doing as well as others. I see a lot of people come to these groups for support because they aren't actually doing well at first or they don't understand the process so, in turn, come seeking help and answers from others that have been doing it longer. Otherwise, I agree and appreciate your honest opinion.
I appreciate the honest review, same questions I have about Carnivore. I think it may be easier to curb cravings, but the boring factor of eating just meat might be hard. I havent been able to stick with either lately....I know keto works, it did for me before, and now I need to get back to it.
I always look forward to hearing your videos however I'm stopping this one mid way through due to how distracting the background music is. Does UA-cam force the channel owners to add background music?
I did keto 3 years ago, felt really good, and lost some weight. Except my cravings did not go away so I slipped back into old habits easily and regained some of the weight. 2 months ago started back on low-carb/keto and transitioned to carnivore after 3 weeks. I'm on my 6th week and gotta say it feels amazing. I've noticed my sugar cravings have pretty much dissapeared, and I love sweets. I feel great energy-wise everyday, get better sleep, don't snore anymore, my glucouse level is controlled, building muscle naturally, and best of all my mental clarity is amazing and rarely feel as stressed or anxious as I'd feel before in different situations.
I’m almost 54. Been a sugar and carb addict my whole life. I’ve been 30 pounds overweight for the last 20 years and on a low dose of Lipitor. High triglycerides, low HDL and low T. Started the carnivore diet last week and ready to kick the sickly sugar lifestyle for good! LFG!
My takeaway from being a carnivore is that until the agriculture revolution, which started about 12000 years ago, we were primarily carnivores. We did eat fruits and grains, in limited quantities, on a seasonal basis. New research shows that when we eat fructose, it signals the body, basically, that winter is coming, and it is time to start putting on fat. I don't think that we were ever designed to eat plants year-round. If you have to supplement heavily, then you are probably eating the wrong things. I do supplement with magnesium and zinc, but primarily because soils now are low in magnesium so the uptake in animals is low. I also have BPH, so I make sure my zinc levels are up.
One really important point that often gets missed in these types of conversations is that many people on a SAD do not actually eat much veg. Often, in conversations, people admit that their main vegetable was French fries and ketchup. I know for myself, not only did I not eat vegetables, I also did not eat fruits. I encourage everyone who is eating keto or carnivore, do your blood work and help to add data to the conversation. It is important for normal people (not influencers) to add their voices to this story and show the improvements gained by eat well.
I'm a 40 year old man that started the carnivore diet about a week ago. Before carnivore, I was about 220 lbs, not active partially because of inflammation in one of my knees and a lack of energy, ate cereal and milk for breakfast, frozen burritos for lunch, and usually a ton of pasta and canned junk for dinner (I don't like to cook). Between meals, I snacked a lot. Tried to get healthier snacks but still leaned toward chocolate covered almonds and raspberry/blueberry fignewton style bars. I also ordered food online a lot. After switching to carnivore, I've eaten a lot less. One or two heavy meat/fat meals of usually 3/4 to 1 lbs of ground beef, 2 to 4 fried eggs, and tbs or two of butter thrown in while cooking. I'll season it with burger seasoning, iodized salt, and some pepper. Eat until full. No counting calories or portioning. If I'm full before the plate is empty, put it in the fridge and eat the rest later. If I'm still hungry, I'll fry up a few more eggs. Going to be eating some liver at least once a week for the vitamins. Like I said, it's been about a week eating like that and I feel great. I no longer feel weighed down after eating like I did with carbs. My energy is up as well as my mental health. I've felt good enough to get back into working out with weights and have started walking 2 miles every other day. The cravings for sugary snacks is gone. I sleep better, move better, feel better. Obviously, without blood work and a check up from a doctor I don't know if any of these changes are just plasebo or actual health changes. I don't own a scale so I'm not sure if I've lost weight. The last time I got my weight checked was at the doctor's office and that was about 8 months ago. So far, this isn't a diet in the sense that most people use the word. This is a lifestyle change that I plan to stick with from now on.
NGL, I'm gonna eat what I want. I started carnivorish about 1 1/2 years ago. I lost weight and am off all meds. I still am in a wheelchair due to MS, but I have hope the myelin in my brain will grow back...
I was keto for 6 years. Could still never stop thinking about and craving for food. I realize now that the keto sweeteners were keeping my body from totally shaking sugar cravings. I lost weight but continually stalled, sometimes months at a time. I switched to carnivore about 3 weeks ago. Everything about me is so much better and healthier. No need to count calories, and now no need to count carbs.
I wonder what really the difference is. What were you eating on keto? I assume almost no fructose and few grains? Were you still eating seed oils? What about saturated fat? Eggs?
I agree, there are so many u tubers out there making money off of these fake keto recipes, crap like erythritol, stevia, and the ever horrible almond flour.

I’m doing it and feel kind of like crap but I’m also trying to lose weight which probably has a lot to do with it. Something I’ve noticed though is before I started carnivore I had OCD for brushing my teeth - I had to brush them around 8-10 times a day for no reason other than obsession if that makes sense? Before and after every meal, before and after every hot drink, and random times in between. It’s been that way for _years_ as long as I can remember. It’s only been 2 weeks so far that I’ve been on carnivore and I notice randomly it’s been hours since I last brushed my teeth :o like it’s 8pm now and don’t think I brushed them since this morning?? I only brush them in the morning and evening to keep them clean now but it doesn’t even cross my mind randomly during the day. That’s been happening for like 6 days now. So that’s weird that somehow it’s decreased my OCD apparently (as I haven’t changed anything else)
Thank you Dr Westman. Appreciate the honesty. I am carnivore, but ketovore at times. As I was listening to this I was eating some sardines for the calcium. So I had to smile when you said that.

@@jimj1889I was thinking it may be oxalate dumping, too.
I buy my steaks in 200g portions, wrapped in plastic. :-( But, yeah, still beats single wrapped mini snacks.
@@wocket42 Yes, buying animal foods in bulk is a lot easier on waste reduction than buying processed packaged foods in bulk for sure.
Excellent and very unbiased info, Dr Eric. Your perspective is very refreshing to look at. Eyes wide open, definitely!

Thanks. "Gluco-centric" is also a term to describe today's nutrition teaching.
Thank you Dr Westman, I go back and fourth from keto and Carnivore, I say do what makes you feel whole and healthy.
Yes, he did a great job here!

No more high blood pressure. Sleep great all night. No foggy mind. Mental state is better than ever on carnivore /keto !
Ty, for your open and honest perspective. We need more like you as well as that kind of science minded, honestly.
Wonderful attitude, the world in general needs more of this
I did carnivore for a month to try to cure chronic GERD. I'll probably still try it again.
went keto, then progressively moved to ketovore over a few years....just listening to my body and my hunger/desires.
I also had way more energy and those small, flat, dry patches of skin disappeared. No more gas!
Being a carnivore changed my life. All my health problems were reversed. I never felt so good in my life. (Only in two months)
@@T-aka-T Ohh! Congratulation. You're the example
Yes, same. No more uncontrollable carb cravings for me. Its amazing.

Great view on it and basically experiment and see. I did Carnivore for over a year and I find I feel better and do better on a High Fat Keto way of life. I do enjoy having some veg now and then. I think the same would be said of our ancestors. This is The Warden ;)
Hi Warden!
There are many different styles of carnivore diet. I have been doing Paul saladino md animal-based diet for one year and I have never felt better at 51 years old. All my chronic joint pain went away just like most people on the carnivore diet. I believe it's from all the high oxalate vegetables and nuts.
Only eating meat and fruit would also be a zero seed oil/low linoleic acid diet. This might do the trick for you.
@@wocket42this is what I'm doing as well 😊
I love this doctors take on the carnivore diet.
Witch specifically because even a one meal with raw cabbage will fill half of carb intake.
I was 50 at the time
After going Keto, i decided to add more meat to my diet. I'm seeing a growth in muscle and energy! Love it!
Keep it up
Thank you, Dr. Westman! Do what give results!
You bet!
The carnivore diet is wonderful for my sugar addiction! I feel better more energy and my allergies are gone! I may add a salad or bake potato once every 2 weeks but that’s it! I’m 55 and feel like I did at 30
Why would you want to add the salad or potato? Hungry?
Great video Doc, i have been carnivore for about 16 months now, was very obese, lost 85 LB, diabetes completely gone, and i am back to train again. I am almost 40 never thought that would be possible. I recommend to everyone.
Your wisdom and balanced approach is greatly appreciated.
I have Kidney Disease. I tried Carnivore and my EGFR went from 67 to 34 the problem was with Phosphros which lead to Acidosis in the blood

Great respect for you on how open you are to another diet and how respectful you go about it!
I've seen no compelling fossil evidence that we evolved from apes
@@zamfirtoth6441 the evidence is there ... its just for whatever reason some people refuse to believe it as in most cases... it goes against their religion. I also believe in the divine but i acknowledge science be it's mistakes, breakthroughs, and evolving discovery and explanation of things....
I believe many things on earth evolved, and the fossil record shows it, 'cave man's to modern human seems to have just 'happened' not enough transitory evidence..thus the term missing link.
one way to think of it -- the animals do the work of collecting and/or creating the nutrients, then you eat em.
It's not consumer tastes, the carnivore diet is simply delicious, it the government recommendations and our faith in that evil system.

Westman
Glad it was helpful!
I truly appreciate Dr Westman’s measured thought process and openness.
Thanks. I was glad to hear your opinion.
Our ancestors started out as scavengers. That's why our stomach acid pH is closer to carrion eaters. It was the fat rich bone marrow we scavenged that increased the size of our brains.
Thank you dr. Westman, your approach is so scientific and yet so well to be understood by all of us.
Right?
Absolutely!
I was never successful with keto diets. I halfheartedly did the carnivore to prove it was bs! Now, I’m 6 months in and feeling amazing so, I chose to eat this way. It’s not a fad diet …it’s a way of eating that makes you feel amazing. ❤
Yes. Carnivore is a Keto subset. 👍

I went into it from a lifetime of fitness coaching (now 73 ) " If you eat as a carnivore, live like a carnovore" was my advice. I was an ovo lacto vegetarian, with no issues. A reason, again philosophically was " animals can be force fed and " chemicalised " whereas a carrot will only grow if it gets what a carrot needs "
I tried carnivore out of curiosity about Feb this year, not to overcome any aliments (I had none..unlike Jordan Peterson and many others ), with no change to my exercise activities.

Love your balanced approach. I share the same thoughts. I am researching as much as possible. Very glad to

Started the carnivore diet last week and ready to kick the sickly sugar lifestyle for good! LFG!
Wife and I started 2 days ago. Good luck and good health!
Thanks for the info. I agree that you really don’t need the music and fancy zooming, etc. You come across more distinguished without it in my opinion.
Thank you for this video, Doc! 🙏❤️

True, and canned vegetables have no vitamins.
I appreciate the fact that you have an open mind about this carnivore diet. Your honesty is very refreshing.
@@wocket42 No fructose, no grains. No seed oils. Yes, saturated fats from the meats. Yes, eggs.

@@cankerbloom9015yes, everything you need and nothing you don’t. Kind of tired of hearing that phrase. But I guess they have to make a living any way they can.
I like how this guy is considerate of new information. It is surprisingly hard to find these days. An actual scientist! Not an ideologue. Not an activist. Wow. Thank you to him for his work.
Everything I see as comments from people that does it is that they are feeling amazing
@@Vexarax it's already a good reason to not give up. And I have read in some places that the beginning can be hard, the body is adjusting itself.
Thank you Dr Westman. Appreciate the honesty. I am carnivore, but ketovore at times.
As I was listening to this I was eating some sardines for the calcium. So I had to smile when you said that.
Thankyou infact carnivore diet has played a big in my journey with diabetes and now my blood sugar levels are in control
