  • Cleaning Hang On Back Filters (HOB) is an important part for aquarium maintenance. Avoiding all of those solids from going back to the tank is just as important.
Today, I show you guys how I clean hang on back filters and why I do why I do. Hang on back filters are a great way to mechanically and biologically filter the tank, but avoiding having all that gunk slough off back into you fish tank once it has already been captured by the hang on back filter.
Dirty hang on backs just aren't unsightly to look at, they can also damage the filter itself. All that debris can work its way down into the impeller shaft of the hang on back filter and cause the impeller of the hang on back to wear unevenly and could evenly cause damage to the overall integrity of the filter.
Hang on back filters are amazing filters to use for your fish tanks, but hang on back filters do need to be cleaned to prolong the life of the filter

I agree the telltale signs is when you see the water running on each side and the emergency outflow... with not much coming through the middle... GREAT tutorial Andrew... this is really helpful! What I was noticing is the color of your HOB, pretty cool man!!
In my HOBs, I removed all the cartridges and I placed Seachem matrix in the bottom, topped it with polyfill- pinky floss and occasionally I put a new bag of puritgen in there...I've seen a lot of tutorials on how you can recharge Purigen although I haven't tried it yet..
I love the aquascape in this tank!
You definitely have good flow again... I don't ask a lot of questions because I just listen and learn right now!! Thanks for putting out quality content for somebody like me, I really appreciate it! Hope you have a great day my friend! Love, peace, and blessings 💚✌️🙏🌿🐟🌿💚

It is always good to hear that others also think these tutorials are good. I am want to try and help people that have these questions, and feel as though I do a good job covering them but hearing that other people also thought they are good it just good affirmation.
Yeah the color of it is funky; guess it comes with being 30+ years old.
Ohh yeah the cartridges are a total scam and people should use them and then buy sponge or other things to replace them. Polyfill will polish the tank and sponges will help polish and provide space for beneficial bacteria.

Thank you for saying you that you can clean your filter in tap water. People need to know how fast bacteria grows. It's so much easier to clean in the sink rather then getting a bucket full of tank water. If your tank is established then you have plenty of bacteria for the filter. Thank you again!

You’re welcome. It is much easier and quicker to just rinse it off in the sink and be done with it. As you said bacteria grows quickly and is everywhere on every surface in a tank. If people want to wash everything with tank water by all means, go for it but they should know there is a better way.

You seemed to answer every question that came to mind as I watched. The only one I thought of that you didn’t was using that waste in your garden or canteen for watering. Would that be a consideration for plant owners?
    Nicely done brother!👍🏾

That’s what I plan on doing with the water in the bag that backwashed out. So that is totally an option but just more time consuming especially with polyfill. By rinsing it into a sink i do lose out on all the good gunk in there but the connivence factor is just too great. Would be a nightmare to try and rinse that in a bag.

    What company is that filter?

That is a very, very old penn plax HOB filter but I could be mistaken as there are no distinguishing markings on it that I have been able to find. It was a gift to me from my dad would got it 20 years ago from someone else.
