Here's a look at how I clean biofilter (bio-sponge). Be sure not to use water with chlorine or chloramine, as it will kill the nitrifying bacteria, often called beneficial bacteria, or simple BB.
(AOB Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria)
Good points. Someone once said, keep your filters dirty but your water clean via weekly water changes.
I've been in the hobby over 40 years and this is the most simple way of explaining the process of aquarium filtering! Great job of making it simple af. Sometimes I believe people over complicate things to appear smarter than they are. Not this guy, he's interested in educating new com👍
Most concise, to the point explanation of the nitrogen cycle I`ve heard. That `dirty water` is also pure GOLD as a plant fertilizer (as I`m sure you`re aware Dan)...
Oh yeah.
This is very useful information because I didn't know about this when I had my first tank and now that I have a new tank that's being set up I will remember this
dude fish shit going all over your carpet
its amazing how many people actually clean there filters under tap water that dont know.
I just bought a 29. Graduating from my 5 gal Betta Tanks. Thanks so much for this particular and ALL of your updates!
Dude had to pause and like your video im new and I like the way you explained this.👍👍👍
I do the same thing basically but my filters have a bio grid and a bio sponge. I do use pre filter sponges for extra surface area for bacteria. They also extend the life of my filter pads. I have tested cleaning my media in tap water before and experienced no adverse effects but I still believe it is best/safest to use old tank water when cleaning biological media. I'm a big fan of sponge filters also which I also squeeze out in old tank water. Out of all forms of filtration (mechanical, chemical and biological) I think biological is by far the most important. The filter pads themselves however I am quick to throw in the sink and rinse out to extend the life of them. I don't depend on them to hold my biological and if the other option is throw them away I will rinse them in the sink and get them good and clean. Thanks for a great how to video, always enjoy your content.
Great informative video explaining the nitrogen cycle! Thank you!
Great video! Helped me a lot..
My filter is the same model as the one in your video. I used to change only one cartridge at a time thinking thats where a lot of the bacteria lived (& then like you said, shake the sponges out in used tank water & put them back). If I had to change both cartridges at once I'd tuck a bit of old cartridge mesh inside the new one to seed it. I think it was inhibiting water flow & causing my filter to work harder & clog up faster.
Now that I know the bacteria live in the sponge & not the cartridge mesh, cleaning my filter is going to be a lot less messy & a whole lot simpler! Thanks
Man thays the filthiest tank ive ever seen. Wipe the lid dude
😭😭😭
😂😂😂😂
Amen! I didn’t even use the bio sponge when I first started keeping fish. Now, of course I know better and clean it by swishing gun a bucket of tank water. Thanks for sharing. New sub. Love your videos.
Thanks!
Thank you! I wasn’t sure if I change the cartridge or not. So I see I can change the cartridge but leave and rinse the bio filter.
Very well said.
Thanks so much!
This is the importance of multiple sources of Bio Media. Give you the ability to clean one at a time, leaving plenty of BB in your tank.
Thank you
That was one neglected bio sponge my friend, to get to that amount of debris on it. Every weeks do a good wringing out of bio sponge and stagger the cleaning of them. Shouldn’t let the sponge get that gunked up to grow bad bacteria. But I am a salt water guy and we are a bit more anal bout our filters.
Super helpful video 👍🏽🙏🏽
When do you usually clean it?
No regular schedule. when I see it getting backed up, I clean it. Every few months maybe.
The top of your hood is filthy! You have a nice set up but how nice your aquarium hood would look if it was cleaned..👍
How often do you clean the inlet pipe and the entire HOB filter inside out?
Only when it needs it. Maybe once a year.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Thank you for intersting video. Looking forward to more of this topic videos .
wow!
Do we want to leave the algae growth on the hob like yours has or remove it? Mine has it too
That's up to you. It's not hurting anything, but if you don't like the way it looks, you can remove it. Just be careful not to over-clean your filter.
I have the aqueon quiet flow 75 filter with two filters. Should both filters be changed at the same time and if not, how far apart ?
Also, How long should I wait to clean my new tank for the first time ? I don't want to lose any beneficial bacteria and my levels are all perfect at the moment
I change and clean mine at the same time. I'd leave the biofilter alone until it starts getting clogged up with gunk.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonlyty, is it ok to sometimes just clean them instead of replace or is full replacement recommended ?
@@davidsobczynski4436 You can try to clean the filters if you want.
I buy "batting" at the walmart and make filters for a few cents each so it's not worth it to clean them.
How long did it take the sponge to get that clogged?
This tank gets like that in a month or so. I've never paid close attention, but it doesn't take long.
Dan Hiteshew thanks Dan for the reply. I have another quick question if you don’t mind answering. I have 2 HOB filters that I have to take off the tank for the painters to get to the wall. How long can I keep the filters out of the of the tank before my beneficial bacteria die off ? Also what method could I use to preserve the beneficial bacteria while they’re off the tank? I figure it’ll take a few hours for that first and second coat of paint to dry before I can put them back on the tank. I’m bracing for a mini cycle at the least. With that being my only tank I have to keep the fish in there and pray for the best.
I put mine in the washing machine lol
