  • This daily driven Jaguar Mark 2 has a few issues. It won't stop and it won't go. The brake pedal goes to the floor and when you try to drive faster the engine backfires. Let's fix it!

If the stuff in the filter is not in his tank I was wondering if ethenol in the fuel is stripping/melting the older rubber fuel lines and depositing it in the filter..GN

Beautiful example of this particular jaguar and a credit to the owner. Your knowledge seems endless Adam. Hope the weather has improved.

I've encourted an old car where fuel hoses were crumbling only inside. All of the rubber bits went in to the fuel rail and clogged the fuel injectors. The crud inside the injectors was black.

Nice to see some sixties Jag saloons in the workshop in preparation for the channel’s S-type project getting revived this summer !

I remember from my apprenticeship in the early 60’s on a fault finding test they would fit an extra thick gasket on a mechanical fuel pump between the pump and the engine block so it would cause fuel starvation at high speed. They were sneaky those testers.

Having had similar issues with brake master cylinders , around 2015 ish I replaced the seals in mine ( it was 21 years old at this point) , this fixed it and pedal was back to normal, but last year noticed the pedal slowly but surely dropping to the floor again, just as it once did. So don't be too surprised if you get a call back in the years to come that its doing it again. I have a new one yet to fit, car about to be put back on the road after a year off it, so thanks for the video you reminded me of work I need to do.

The AC sediment filter does indeed feed into the middle as the original setup is a brass mesh screen in the top body. The fuel goes in the centre, sediment and water drops into the glass, and the screen filters it going back out. If you fit the paper cartridge type it does collect the mess inside and you can't see it. I found out that the hard way on my car. I just check inside the filter every few months to see how it looks and keep a spare in the boot, plus I have the original mesh screen in the spares box as well for last resort.
The previous owner took it into a specialist for poor running/acceleration. They fitted the paper type, but left the filthy clogged screen in there on top of it. It was completely plugged with aluminium corrosion and gunk so they probably didn't even see it was there. When I first collected the car from storage up it still fell flat on its face pulling away. They'd not solved the original fault, messed up the carburettor tuning, set the wrong ignition timing, and charged him a few hundred quid.
Your customer is lucky to have someone who knows what he's doing!

I was recently advised by a Jaguar specialist that if changing from mesh screen to paper filter it is advisable to reverse the flow through the filter.

That would make sense. Mine is low mileage unrestored from new (39000 at the moment) and still has the original nylon fuel lines, which conveniently also don't react with ethanol in fuel. I shied away from the thought of trying to tweak them to reverse the flow so have left it as is unless I have to replace the fuel lines. I don't do that many miles at the moment and not very many long trips so dropping the filter once in a while isn't a huge problem for me. I have more trouble with the modern petrol going stale!

Adam you can get new Brake master Cylinders , at SNG Barrett in holland.
Having worked on More MKII than I care to remember, I have never seen a fuel filter that bad, no wonder it was starving the engine.

That was a great video . A person on UA-cam Gary Starr also is restoring a Jaguar Mark 2 . He had troubles with the master brake cylinder . Had issues with receiving wrong parts from S G Barrett . Wrong part meaning right part just will not fit . U may try him for a remedy for your customers brake issues . He is in my state Arizona USA , Queens Creek and he is a Brit . His is a standard transmission . I believe its jagvette on UA-cam . By the way I ordered new ceramic throttle control bushings from your friend for my Jaguar XJS v12 . I received the OEM style from Moss auto parts they would not fit no matter what I did . While the new ceramic bushing were far more expensive they will solve my problem .

First time visit and found the content really great. I'm not a Mk 2 fan, though I've driven them for weddings and not bank robberies, I had a Mk 1 .. 2.4 litre, manual gear box with overdrive and it was a UK variant so right hand drive. A beautiful car to drive but it had the rust devil. Spent about 2 years digging it out replacing doors floors and tidying the interior which was in remarkable condition, repainted it from the original white to a blackbird blue/black. looked beautiful. I never touched the engine it was pristine. I also had a jaguar manual and have to agree they were a work of art and information. Thanks for sharing your content. Cheers from New Zealand.

I thought I'd give some specs just for fun, but then realised it was probably over my head a bit with gross ratings and different heads fitted to the 3.4 engine making different power.
Here seems to be the factory rating from Jaguar , gross
    1520 curb weight
    210 Hp/5500
    291 Nm/3000
    10.5s 0-60 mph
    11s 0-100 km/h
    190 km/h / 118 mph claimed top speed.
Given it's gross I'd think that a little under 160 hp and around 240 Nm net is realistic.
Claimed top speed? I don't know! Maybe it's very "slippery" , done under perfekt conditions. 170-180 km/h / 110 mph. Is that more reasonable, when the var was new in its heyday??? Don't know. 🤔

Hi, new to the channel loverly mk2. I think the filter would benefit from switching the flow direction even if it's correct as these were generic filter housings and if it had been fitted to the left inner wing(sorry from uk) on another vehicle the flow through the filter would be reversed and would have been seen. Also like one of your other commentors, might be the fuel line degrading with the modern fuel. Keep up the good work.

Beautiful car, what a wonderful daily driver. I see several other comments have had the same thoughts as me, are the fuel pipes deteriorating?

I hope the owner will have reasonnable expectations from the reliability of a very very old car. I think it's worth keeping around a simple basic japanese car, to use when the other one is in repair.
